The weirdest part about immersive propaganda is that I feel like a crazy person for saying I'm a communist to people that actually agree with me about economics and freedom, but still somehow hold on to the belief that I'm just deficient or lazy for my impoverished circumstances. It's absurd to understand these issues, and still believe that all the people in precarious circumstances are individually at fault.
@logans3365 Жыл бұрын
If a man cuts off your legs, it’s not your fault that you can no longer walk, your not more lazy compared to your fellow man, you simply are not granted the same resources and opportunities. It’s the same thing when capitalist hoard majority of the wealth and resources, and then used that power to sabotage everyone else. We couldn’t run within this system even if we tired, we have to take our legs back first.

Having encountered those people, it always becomes the same argument: Welfare Queens Exist... so we have to end these programs! To which I respond: So.... you want to get rid of all programs that are helping staving families survive because one person might abuse it? That is a big problem I have with Americans, they seem to want a perfect system that can't be abused or nothing at all. It has become my goal to get them to the same spot I am, to see those abusing these systems as a potential negative that is worth all the benefits. Not to demand crippling regulations and harsh punishments for those that are caught but to understand that may just a cost of doing business, one that is more then worth it for the benefits to humanity as a whole. Besides: It isn't like our current systems lack abusers, just ask the 1% how to pay taxes....

I don’t think communism is attainable because I doubt a stateless society is possible. However, I believe we can eliminate class and money from society through sufficient automation. Growing up poor and seeing the aftermath of myself and my family was what did it for me, but only after a lot of self education. Then, I realized that my country has ruined the lives of countless families like my own, inside and outside of our countries. I blamed my mom as a kid, but I realized that she was one of many people who were left to rot by the people who were meant to care for all of us equally. I became an adult, and I quickly realized that my only goal in life is to ensure that no child will ever grow up the way I did or worse. @@nanashi420 And you never, under any circumstances, mention Holodomor
@nanashi420 Жыл бұрын
@caralho5237 I do bring up holodomor, it's an important historical fact that showcases various problems with the past of socialism. You can't expect any ideology to be free from mistakes. No socialist leader has been the same as any other. They are simply humans. What I will say is that they are still better than any president of the US or any royal family out there. They fought for people, and while they may have done incredibly awful things in the pursuit of their own goals, which we may never fully understand, the US has done far worse than any of it. Those things are not meant to be suppressed. Any genuine socialist will look at a situation such as the holodomor and use it as a valuable lesson for the future to improve upon our ideology. We can separate the good and the bad from each individual to learn from them in separate ways. How can you criticize these situations in specific when the United Fruit Company massacred villages for cheaper bananas and the US destabilized the Middle East over assumptions of WMDs and a blatant hatred for the people. Every country, every religion, every race, has had some form of dark past, what we need to do is learn from that past and develop a better world, not demonize that group directly for a lifetime and prevent any genuine growth. My fight is not for communism in specific, my fight is for humanity. I want a world in which no child fears bombings, community is placed above the individual, and everyone is housed, fed, and offered a job, as well as various options for building a better life. Unfortunately, we will never get there if the majority of people can't stand the idea of their hyperindividualism being stripped away in favor of a better life for everyone. What is the point of our existence if we allow children to die, women to be raped, men to repress emotions. It creates a sad world that I would rather die than live in, which is why I choose to fight against it in hopes that I can see my effort pay off. I want a world that is better for the most people possible, and it just so happens that communism fits that description, at least in theory. Until we change things, our existence is useless. People will call others barbaric while participating in a primal society that requires constant growth to be satiated. If we stay where we are now, all of human history will be no more than an ember that took far too long to burn out, I'd like to believe that my existence serves a purpose, and I'd like to help every single person find that purpose as well. Not through blind support for any ideology, but through sturdy support for the interests of humanity.

I m an Eastern European who used to believe in communism until I grew up got a job learned about communist economics and realised how i"iotic what your trying to argue is. The issue with the whole video is that on the surface it offers a compelling interrogation of established oppinion on communism, but the issue is the facts are cherry picked and flaws with capitalism are never compared with their communist equivalents to create a more concise understanding of the two when putted againts each other, this in turn allows the narrator to twist much of the information presented to give a very limited and idealistic presentation of communism. So the video doesn't state anyting outright false but it is very propagandist in the way it ignores key facts to construct a narrow understanding of this issue.

As a Polish person, I know more and less about the history of PPR (in PL, PRL). I don't think communism will ever work if you want freedom of speech, human rights, and your dignity. In my opinion, this system is kind of excellent in its purest form, but it is still a utopian system. Human greed is the biggest problem with this form of government. How much time has passed in the USSR since communists came to power for the USSR to become an authoritarian, expansionist, and dictatorial country? You can't expect that all the ruling people will try to be fair and selfless. What about citizens? Will you expect them not to want to improve their living conditions or earn more money? How about authorities that want to stay in power? They always used all of their tools to stay where they were. In the Polish People's Republic, the only way to get a better life was to suck up to the authorities and local government. Then you will get a position as a politician or political activist; except for this, you didn't have any other option. What about those who weren't communists? They protested, and they got pacified. Another problem is poor economic development. China has a kind of interesting example. They are communist in type of government but kind of capitalistic and corporatist in economics. Communism itself has stopped working there, and the Chinese authorities have to reform and use capitalist economic elements for the country to develop. So it is still communism? And there is another question. Is there freedom of speech? Journalists in Hong Kong say otherwise. I will say this again. Communism is a UTOPIAN system, and all utopian systems don't work because of human nature. Sorry, English is not my first language...

I've been getting this video in my recommended a couple times even after already listening to the whole thing. I like to look in the comments and look at what others have to say either it be for or against communism. That being said I like to hold a neutral stance when listening to an opposing view from one I hold, or even try and see from their perspective of what they may see and what I do not. I feel like writing some thoughts of mine here. Bare with me though i am running on sleep from yesterday, thank you. I'll admit I don't talk to communists or really interact with people with those ideas that often if at all, the comment section here is where I've been looking at what these kind of people have to say as of late. But from what i can tell from face value is that advocates of communism don't mention failures or even try to be a devils advocate. Granted I didn't delve too deep into the 1,500+ comments on the video but that's from what I can tell. Originally i was going to write a whole paragraph of the good and bad of captialism and communism but that would take too long. Instead i am going to give some things i would like to ask about be it to the uploader of the video, and/or people who agree or disagree with either economic model. 1. Why did China's "Great Leap forward" fail? 2. How much freedom do you have under a communist government? 3. Has capitalism put down more than it brought up in developed countries like Germany or the US? and why? 4. Which benefits the common man more? Again these questions are for about anyone, leave a comment focusing on any amount of these questions and i may or may not try to discuss with you. I am open to discourse. A message to Balkan Odyssey: Idk how long I have been subscribed to your channel, but I was subbed before this video uploaded. I've seen you've been replying and hearting comments on this video 19 hour before i even started writing this, so.. Great quality of content. I really do appreciate the effort that was put into this video to make it utmost enjoyable and interesting. Keep it up man!

1. I would argue that any system based on an authoritarian or dictatorial system of government is doomed to fail. This type of state is sensitive to tyranny and mistakes any human makes because in such a system only one or a small number of humans make decisions. And these decisions don´t need to be driven by anything other than greed or a flawed vision of the future. "The Great Leap forward" I would argue is an example of such a mistake simply because of the amount of suffering it brought to the people, even if you believe lower estimates of losses from the famines. I believe communism could only be achieved through true democracy through councils, democratised workplaces owned by the workers with shared profits, which has never been really done before, as even in supposedly "socialist/communist" countries the workers would be paid by the state and not society. I find it necessary to achieve a society in which everyone is equal, for everyone to have a say in decisions. I also believe that only if the decision makers are truly bound to what they promise and controlled by their voters ("imperative mandate") can true democracy be achieved which in turn is necessary for a truly equal society. 2. Depends on what kind of system you define as communist or rather what you believe the way to achieve communism is (there are several wholly different opinions on how this could be done). In communism you neither have a government nor laws, you would simply act based on empathy for others and would in turn be acted upon with empathy "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs". You would do what you can to better society for everyone and in turn society would care for you. 3. I believe it is hard to answer this as you only have theoretical points of comparison as no other system has yet to be globally implemented. But I believe that the suffering and equality could be a lot less or even non existent if our current system wouldn´t be based upon taking as much for yourself as you can and not caring whether or not other people manage to survive. 4. I would argue that the common man definitely benefits more from a system like communism (and I mean true communism and not the kind where a dictatorial leader proclaims from the terrace of his villa that "communism has officially been achieved", looking at you USSR, I mean the kind I described earlier). As the common man simply doesn´t own a factory or company with hundreds if not thousands of workers which they exploit, they are most likely a worker themselves who is exploited.

I'm really glad you approach the topic and this video in an open-minded although cautious manner - that's what I really appreciate. When it comes to your questions, as I've already pointed out many times in the video, I've linked a huge amount of resources in the pinned comment addressing most common concerns and grievances people might have about communism (and which I had myself as well). Moreover, every single Marxist ruthlessly critical about the failutes and shortcomings of every former socialist government and their policies. The only instance where we seem to be playing "devils advocate" is when defending those revolutionary creations from utterly shameless slander and baseless accusations based on decades of Red Scare propaganda. We defend them because otherwise an uncontrollable mythology develops of lies and half-truths that go into the mainstream if unadressed. Unfortunately I don't have the time to sit down for half an hour to comprehensively answer all your questions. That's why I genuinely advise you to check out channels like Second Thought, Hakim, MarxismToday and BadEmpanada if you want a nuanced Marxist perspective on many, many issues. If you need sources to specific topics, make sure to check out the recommendations in the pinned comment.

Personally, I believe communism is a workable political system if its in the right hands which it is often not, it is always taken over by greedy leaders that want to further their own goals and gains, I believe true communism can only work in an ideal society, a society where leaders are leaders and will not get corrupted by power which rarely is the case in real life. On the top of my head all the communist countries I can think of are mostly dictatorial and totalitarian, granted it might not be fault of communism but it is the truth of reality, leaders rarely are uncorrupted by power and there is really not much we can do. Another problem with so called communist countries is that they are also racist and have concentration camps of their own such as the soviet gulags and the uyghur concentration camps, sure capitalist countries do too but the communist are hardly innocent. Communism has its merits but I believe it is quite impractical to execute at least we haven't seen a true communist country that is not tainted from corruption and greed. Communism on paper is very tempting, it almost feels like a utopia which promises equality for all, but how do you even enforce equality, I have not seen any examples of a country being able to enforce equality let alone from a communist country, china? No, uyghur muslims and other minority groups are being repressed. Soviet Union? Suppressed Jews e.g. the doctors' plot.
@Grautwok Жыл бұрын
@@winston7131 I feel like you just reached into my brain and wrote down everything I was going to say. Communism is in theory a perfect society for the common man, but it has always been corrupted into authoritarian dictatorships where the "leaders" indulge in the vices of capitalism to a degree even the billionaires of the world would be envious of. There are definitely lessons the world can learn from communist theory, and there are countries that have taken some notes. The Nordic countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland) are "social capitalists" that instead of picking one side, has instead let the two ideologies keep each other in check. While it still has it's flaws, I feel like it is a system that works pretty well.
@winston7131 Жыл бұрын
@@Grautwok I hold the personal belief there is nothing entirely without flaws, sure many theories seem to be flawless on paper but when executed there will be unknown flaws or unknown factors preventing it from being flawless that are not taken into account when the theory is being made. The problem with communism isn't the ideology itself but our capabilities to execute it because we are all humans afterall and have greed, have wrath and many other flaws, causing it to be hard to properly implement for its full effectiveness. I too agree social capitalism is going to be a more practical method to implement socialism because we can take good side of both ideologies to form a better or more practical one. Of course, there are its flaws but I agree it is better than leaning 100% to one side or another.

In the face of this brutality the oppressed turn to possibly something more evil or something they need not want, all out of anger and fear caused by exploitation of the worker. if the capitalists didn't use such crushing violent and lethal force against any government or people that reject the system they got rich off, this would not be the case. it's the lack of numbers caused by propaganda and educational indoctrination that lead the already beaten down to take the strongman option. ask yourself how brutality can consistently force the beaten into taking such drastic actions. we are not angels, we are not perfect, we are tread on desperate members of the working class who simply believe in more for the many compared to the few. judge the actions that turned these people to the extreme, not the people who turned to the extreme out of fear.

Over the past few years I've become much more sympathetic to Marxism, but I believe the approach to the subject in this video (an approach still quite common among Marxists) is fundamentally wrong. You sound like the Marxist equivalent of a Christian apologist: we are right about everything, THEY are wrong about everything, the future is in our hands, join us! Uh, sorry, no thanks. Throughout this video I cringed every time you said the equivalent of "all communists believe" -- because, and I'm sure this will be very surprising to you, the reality is that communists, socialists, and every stripe of Marxist argue about everything all the time. If Marxist A makes a point, you can be sure that Marxist B, C, and D will each find a different reason to disagree with it. Why ignore this? Also, I'm always skeptical of "theory for beginners" recommendations that stick solely to texts at least a century old. To do this is to treat the subject like it's the equivalent of learning your Christian catechism. It's a form of anti-intellectualism that I doubt Marx would approve of. In reality, Marxism has few adherents today, especially in my country, the US, and you have to address some basic issues with the subject if you're going to get people interested. The most obvious questions are why the global revolution that seemed to be anticipated by Marx, Engels, and Lenin as coming very soon never materialized. Answering this question requires critical engagement with the old sources, and an examination of 20th century history. Sure, read The Communist Manifesto, but maybe read it with the help of China Mieville, to take an obvious example. Stop pretending nothing has changed. Stop pretending communism is one clear, simple, obvious thing. Stop trying to make converts. It's a bad look.

This is coming from someone who had a big aversion to reading classic texts in Marxism... but out of my experience in engaging with, and reading Capital, State and Revolution, Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, I've come to the conclusion that fundamentally, much of the system has remained as it is for the 150 years. The only way you can actually verify if it's true or not, is to read the literature. If you don't do any reading, and simply parrot that "the world has changed so it's no longer relevant", then you can never have an actual alternative. Why am I saying this? Because when I read the texts, many of the problems discussed, events described and relations shown, are all relevant to this day (especially Marx's chapters on the Working Day, Automation, Division of Labour, Theory of Crisis and the tendency of the rate of profit to fall). It's relatable with real life and labour struggles to this date. Same goes with Lenin's chapters on the nature of the state, the national question and the role of unions and parties. Same with Engles's analysis of the family, utopianism and materialism in Socialist movements. I felt like an idiot to have wasted time searching for answers outside rather than doing the basic reading, because the system and it's relations have been fairly the same. Even in physics, if you want to understand the systems around you, you have to take some basic courses. I don't know why people think reading Marxist theory is like reading a Bible. One relies its focus on the scientific analysis of history and economics (marx is literally considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern social sciences), while the other relies on the whims and dictates of a mythical character. The two things are vastly different.

4 min and I can not listen to it anymore and I was truly trying to give it a chance. Claims that are imediate turn offs and that are very common on communists: - "every single criticism about communism has been refuted over 100 years ago", like as if communism is perfect - "political extremism is indispensable for those who truly seek change", extremism is most likely never a good thing, don't know how many wars we need to reach that conclusion. And it sounds like you only truly seek change if you are an extremist, as something that is not negotiable like... in dictatorships. The speech always sounds like this. - "Marxism is the only way to this and that and other ideas are completely worthless". Just ridiculous. Yes it sounds obnoxious and arrogant. There are good and bad things in most ideologies. I'm rumbling just over 4 min of video... wow... The speech is always the same, these guys do not have opinions, in their heads they are the owners of truth itself. They see themselves as extremists and only their ideology is to be implemented. How could not every single communist state not be a dictatorship? And this is how opposites connect, extreme left and right have different goals but will use the same weapons.
@KyleCox404 Жыл бұрын
First, claiming that communists believe "every single criticism about communism has been refuted over 100 years ago" is a mischaracterization. While some supporters of communism may defend the ideology, it's not an assertion that all criticisms are invalid. Like any political ideology, communism has its strengths and weaknesses, and there are ongoing debates and discussions within the communist movement. Your assertion that "political extremism is indispensable for those who truly seek change" oversimplifies the political landscape. Extremism is not synonymous with seeking change. Many advocates for social and political change work within democratic and moderate frameworks to address pressing issues without resorting to violence or radicalism. Extremism often leads to violence and instability, and that's a point of concern for many. Additionally, your statement that "Marxism is the only way to this and that and other ideas are completely worthless" is an exaggeration. While some communists may strongly advocate for Marxism, it doesn't mean they see all other ideas as worthless. Communists, like adherents of other ideologies, recognize that there are valuable aspects and criticisms in various political and economic systems. Your portrayal of communists as extremists who see themselves as the owners of truth is a generalization. Just as in any political ideology, there are diverse perspectives and beliefs among communists. Not all of them advocate for extremism or dictatorship. Finally, linking "extreme left and right" in the same breath and suggesting that they use the same weapons is a simplistic characterization of complex political dynamics. Extremist ideologies on the left and right can have different goals, motivations, and methods. It's important to avoid overly broad generalizations when discussing political ideologies and their adherents.

@@KyleCox404 So since I'm quoting the video, you'd agree the video is mischaracterizing, oversimplifying and exaggerating in some of its points? I recognize that I might be (passionately) generalizing when asserting things about all communists, but to put it short, I never came across a communist that would disagree that at least one of these: China, Russia or (even!) North Korea (to not mention other states and eras) is a freedom paradise, where human rights are violated every day, paradoxically conflicting with extreme left ideology. Conspiracy theories about fascism, propaganda, imperialism and capitalism seems to be always the ones to blame the failed communism states. And that is not only outrageously unfair to those who are suffering at the hands of dictators but also hurts communism itself.

I became a communist due to being raised culturally catholic, and later actually becoming, due to researching the religion deeply, religiously calothic as well, and a history book from the public school i went to. I started really looking into communism after reading the section about the russian revolution of the history booklet i was issued in one of the public schools i went to here in Campinas, SP, Brazil. I learned how the Russian Empire eas pretty much a medieval hellhole in the plain XX century, however communist Russia was the major worldpower at it's height, and modern post-communist Russia is still a great nation, however is slowly decaying the longer it staying as capitalist, that made me realise the communists must have been doing something right since in just a few decades of communism Russia went from being a place where people had effectively zero rights, zero technology, zero democracy, to being one of worlds great nations, while my country Brazil has had 500 years of capitalism and is still, in just about all ways that matter, the same thing for all of that times. That drove me i to politics, wich combined with my catholic ideals of brotherhood and duty, and having always been on the short end of capitalism, having even had periods in my life where my family couldn't afford anything but the most barest essentials for living, pushed me into communism. I could give an explanation of why i believe catholics should be communist, but my comment is already way to large as is

As to point 1: Read a few books by Byung-Chul Han and you'll see the limitations of classical Marxism as applied to neoliberal societies post information revolution. It fails to anticipate the transition from what he calls allo-exploitation, which is typical of sovereign (where direct violent coercion is the means) and disciplinarian/biopolitical societies (where the Marxian theory of exploitation applies) to auto-exploitation, whereby the traditional notion of the subject (sub=under, ject=thrown) dissolves and is replaced by a 'project' (thrown forward) that reproduces the power of capital by internalizing the logic of the market and commodifying and exploiting himself. Examples of this abound: Influencer culture, digital content creation, finance speculation, and numerous other forms of capital valorization which don't rely on the traditional hierarchies of exploitation. Here's a quote from Han's book The Agony of Eros: "As an entrepreneur of the self, the achievement-subject is free insofar as he or she is not subjugated to a commanding and exploiting Other. However, the subject is still not really free because he or she now engages in self-exploitation and does so of his or her own free will. The exploiter is the exploited. The achievement-subject is perpetrator and victim in one. Auto-exploitation proves much more efficient than allo-exploitation because it is accompanied by a feeling of liberty. This makes possible exploitation without domination." To be clear, this does not invalidate Marx. Marx remains indispensable for understanding some power structures, but given that his work ends in the 19th century, some blind spots are inevitable, and our theoretical apparatus must be broadened accordingly.

Do they say anything about clear, overt means of control and exploitation becoming increasingly covert/third-party/subcontracted means of control? For example in Private Security companies taking over national armies in guaranteeing transnational exploitation, or local subcontracted firms taking the intensifying the exploitation and being the risk/PR managent focus, while doing deals with the big company that no longer is directly related, but both profits from it and pressures for more exploitation. It sounds a lot like what I was seeing in my research, so it made me really curious.

I’m in a similar boat. I think class and money can be eliminated from society through sufficient automation. Money is simply a means to motivate people to do boring/unpleasant work. If we can eliminate the need for this unpleasant work via automation then we no longer need money. The “withering away of the state” is wear I have trouble. My understanding is that a state is a government. A system in which society is organized via the creation of laws and the enforcement of said laws. I don’t see how billions of people can be organized without some kind of state. Basically, I view communism as more a guiding light then an actual attainable stage of civilization.

If you disregard marxist analysis in favor of some other vein of leftist politics then you don't really have to listen to this next bit but if you align yourself with marxism then this idea you seem to hold is wrong. Socialism is on the path, the development of the final communist development. Marxists understand the state to be a tool for class rule. There isn't a state under communism. There's still a government, but not in the form and style that we understand today. Engels described it as the state moving from the governing of people to the administration of things, which is also where the known "withering away of the state" idea comes from. I was actually a socialist long before I realized what socialism truly is. I already had a pretty good knowledge of history and the horrible things both capitalist and communist countries did. I viewed it as a trolly problem and chose capitalism because at least there would be less starving people. Oh how wrong I was. It only took watching second thought’s video where he explains what marxism, socialism and communism are. I also learned about them in school (I go to a private school with 1 to 1 classes) I realized that socialism actually aligns with almost all of my beliefs. I feel like most people are just like me. Only they haven’t reached the last stage. I’m proud when people accuse me of being a socialist. Edit: from my experience people seem to have only two arguments against communism that they always default to. Dictators and the lack of a successful communist country. Meanwhile there’s almost an infinite amount of arguments against capitalism.

It's important that this perspective has even been recognised. Marxism has always urged that you should learn and make decisions based on informed, holistic understandings. Misunderstanding and misrepresentation are actually inherent issues in all discourses, especially in such sensitive subjects like socio-economic ideologies. One of the essential elements of Marxism is the importance of critical consciousness. Hence, it's imperative to delve into the depths of every argument, inspect its layers, and confront its contradictions before establishing a judgment. solarflare623's understanding that capitalists often misinterpret or oversimplify communism to divert from their own shortcomings also falls in line with Marxist thought as well. The idea of capitalism misusing the weaknesses of communism as a deflection tool actually echoes the Marxist notion of ideological state apparatuses, which refers to the systems in society, such as education and media, that capitalism utilises to maintain and propagate its influence and power. However, this isn't to say that Marxism promotes blind faith in communism. Marxism, in fact, argues for the comprehensive and truthful analysis of all systems and rejects misrepresentations of any sort. It stresses that while capitalism and communism each have their shortcomings, the societal critique offered by Marxism actually paves the way for identifying the flaws within both and striving for a more egalitarian society (emphasis on more as there will always be problems and contradictions in society that will require resolving, albeit perhaps different to what we see today). And the choice isn't just between capitalism and communism; it's about creating a society where people are valued and economic disparities are minimal. I would also encourage others to heed solarflare623's call to open-mindedness and rigorous investigation of these ideologies as well, regardless of their ultimate position on the capitalist-communist spectrum. And while we are at it, maybe Caralho can enlighten us by explaining what capitalism and capital are as well.

The main issues are lack of incentives, and finding a way of knowing what people want to buy (and what price to put on goods). Also I don't think Totalitarianism is needed or desirable. People need freedom and the rather silly war against western influence (Rock music etc) gave Communism a bad name with ordinary folk. I don't think these problems are unsolvable but must be firstly aknowledged, then solved if Communism is to ever work. On the other side of the coin, how will Capitalism work once many jobs are automated? How will wealth be distributed in the future? Can developed Capitalist economies arrest the decline in living standards for working people, or is it the beginning of the end of Capitalism?

For the more apt answer, capitalism is about collecting wealth in the hands of a lucky few at best and constantly generating more wealth over time until you’re bloated rich while an inevitable dirt poor underclass manifests and toils away for scraps. Communism is a moneyless, classless stateless society, and is more of a potential end goal to socialism than anything else. Socialism is what the extreme majority of us are striving for, where the workers control the means of production, have workplace democracy, and no private interests get in the way of them having a fair shake in life. Of course, the state does require control over many things to provide services, but if it’s centralized in one place as opposed to many private scheming places with power to corrupt things, it’s a less bleak a scenario overall.

All you describe is the faults of capitalism, but not the faults of communism, communism will not solve our issues and I myself believe it is the regulation of capitalism that is needed. Look at the nordic states, follow the nordic social democratic model, strong regulation of capitalism using its successes for the benefit of the people has worked so well they are the happiest, most free, and healthy people across the world, just look at the statistics if you doubt that. Although I side with you that revolution is needed, we've seen many times people are too brainwashed to the modern idea of capitalism that has been taken over by reaganomics and we need radical approaches to change the world. 19:35 Shows your lack of historical knowledge too that holds you back, the soviets NEVER came close to surpassing the us, only in miliarial means did they come close. And that's not what we want, the militarialism and authoritarianism of the USSR was a betrayal to what it was supposed to be. All hope for the USSR died out when Lenin deposed the provisional government after the tsar. I myself would say that its Gorbachev we should follow when it comes to the USSR. No, Gorbachev was not the reason the USSR fell, he's the example of REAL change, he radically changed the USSR, and it was the fault of Stalinists and terrible reformists before him that the USSR collapsed. The USSR had no basis for change and supporting a utopia like Gorbachev planned. Gorbachev was also not a pure capitalist; he planned on strong regulation of capitalism and for the state and workers to still largely influence it. A famous quote by him is “The market came with the dawn of civilization, and it is not an invention of capitalism. ... If it leads to improving the well-being of the people, there is no contradiction with socialism.” Gorbachev's biggest mistake was implementing democracy so early into his reforms, the stagnant soviet economy because of communism allowed unrest to surge when people were allowed to openly complain and protest the regime. Had he waited his economic reforms which did improve the soviet economy would have allowed a new union treaty to pass without hardcore Stalinists (which represent your idea of radical change under Marxist theory) ruining it all by attempting a coup. Under a new union treaty, the Soviet Union wouldn't have collapsed and would have reformed into a social democratic state that would actually improve people's lives. You also can't say just because they improved the lives of serfs is evidence communism is good, the regimes you listed as improving people's lives under communism only did so because the regimes beforehand reached literal rock bottom in HDI. It's like when N*zis claim H*tler was good because he "fixed" the problems of the Weimar republic. Not so strong argument is it now?

@@cringewatcher4229 Your assessment of Soviet history is deeply flawed and misguided. The notion that the Soviets never came close to surpassing the US is simply inaccurate. During the Cold War, the USSR achieved remarkable scientific and technological advancements, such as launching the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, and putting the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space. They also maintained a formidable military presence that challenged the United States on the global stage. Your praise of Gorbachev as an example of "real change" is highly questionable. While he did introduce some reforms, his policies ultimately contributed to the collapse of the USSR. The hasty implementation of democracy exposed the deep-seated problems within the Soviet system, which had been exacerbated by decades of mismanagement and authoritarian rule. Gorbachev's idealistic vision of socialism with strong regulation of capitalism was a flawed concept, and it failed to provide meaningful improvements for the Soviet people. Furthermore, your comparison of communist regimes to the Nazis is inappropriate and offensive. Communism and Nazism are distinct ideologies with different goals and consequences. While both have had their share of atrocities, equating the two diminishes the historical significance and complexity of each regime.
@cringewatcher4229 Жыл бұрын
@@KyleCox404 Flawed and misguided? Not really. Look at the facts the Soviets were never going to win the cold war. I'm not denying the Soviets their victories in the space race or the things they did do right, but simple fact is the US was wealthier, more powerful, and had way more political and economic leverage on the Soviets. Although not entirely to blame on communism since ww2 had a deep effect on the Soviet Union (I'm with you on that last part). I never claimed that Communism and Nazism are comparable I simply used an analogy. For example, people often claim that the CCP under Mao, despite its horrors was good for China because it lifted people out of poverty, ignoring that much of that was during capitalist reforms so imagine how much better China would have been if the Republic of China won the civil war. Also, it was the US under Reagan shipping off industry to China that greatly assisted in its rise. Your points against Gorbachev also are not really necessary. I already acknowledged all of them beforehand. The way he implemented his policies were flawed, but on their own are great ideas. Just look at the Nordic states if you think strong regulation of capitalism doesn't work. I do think many elements of socialism make it an important ideology, its coexistence with capitalism to use it to benefit the people would be a great thing to happen across the west, although sadly, anticommunist thoughts are too entrenched in the minds of millions to allow it, so revolution is necessary.

If I make pies out of berries that everyone in the village is allergic to, then they're valueless because they're not socially necessary. However, if visitors with goods who aren't allergic to the pies want to trade for them, they now have value, because there is now demand for the product. That's supply and demand. And when you talk about communism guaranteeing jobs for everyone and a home, you forget to mention, using the example of the USSR, at what cost this was achieved. The reality was that people were placed in barracks and communal apartments. Those who owned apartments exceeding the established norm were forcibly resettled. Having a family live in their own apartment was considered an incredible luxury. Perhaps you've never lived in a communal apartment, but I endured it for a long 14 years of my childhood, and it was awful (some people suffer through it their entire lives). There is absolutely no personal space for anyone. Regarding jobs for everyone, yes, everyone had a job, but you were forced to work like a slave. If you didn't want to work where you were told, there were fines at first, and then imprisonment. As for healthcare in the USSR, it's a separate story. There were almost no medicines available, and if you fell seriously ill and were not a representative of the communist elite, you would likely suffer just like a homeless person on the street. And about homelessness, it existed in the USSR as well; they were just put in prison under a separate criminal code article for "vagrancy."

My main problem with communism as an ideology is that in its core it is an intolerant and undemocratic ideology. Even if I agree with it in 7/10 issues, the fact that communists almost religiously cling on to all their ideological/party doctrinal beliefs and refuse to even discuss some alternatives or slight deviations, instead shunning and limiting any and all dissent, it really makes me afraid of what a communist run society would look like

As someone who consider myself a communist for just one year, I would like to respectfully understand your vision and concerns, since my reading threw me in the opposite direction of perception. You said your main problem with communism is that at its core it is intolerant and undemocratic. I think that even among communists there are plenty of tolerance for different opinions and takes, the only requirement being that it’s based on material/historical reality. It’s not uncommon that we even read and respect honest liberal writers works on economy for example. About democracy, I believe a socialist society is way more democratic than any “democracy” we have nowadays, the only way we exert our political power is through elections that are passive of corruption, unbalanced power dynamics between candidates that only show their faces each 4 years and things continue to be more or less the same. You also said about how we cling solely to the ideology of the party, but there is plenty of divergence of opinions within communism that are disputable and that we actually like to discuss. About dissent or slightly deviations, again, it all depends if it’s a material based divergence or a counter proletariat ideology or idealism. Please don’t take this comment as any form of criticism, as I just want to understand your perception and maybe shine some light on this legitimate concern, given how communism is portrayed as a inflexible authoritarian doctrine by the status quo. As far as I know the 40h week was introduced by different movements in different countries. In the US it was even a company - Ford Motors Company - which introduced it. The feminist movement in the 60s was heavily funded by the Rockefellers and other rich families, which even were the ones who created "Gender Studies". Theories say that was to gain new cheap workers and tax payers, by simply doubling the workforce in a short period of time. Martin Luther King, probably the most prominent figure of the civil rights movement was anti-communist. And I don't understand why current communist countries, like Cuba, North Korea and Vietnman are not considered representative of what communist reality looks like. Quotes like "Secret intelligence operations like MK Ultra has far exceeded all limits of inhumanity challenging even the vilest Nazi experiments" makes me really doubt you have any idea what took place in german concentration camps or soviet gulags.

Now 63, I became a Marxist in 1989 (29). I still consider myself a Marxist, feel Marxism should evolve, as 1 of the central pillars Marxism is, evolution/change. For me 1 of the big problems with Marxist movements is the communication methods. We have to start with complete honesty, and that includes paying the devil it's due. I argue that England is the greatest country in the world (China close 2nd), because at the time of the English revolution there were about 350 million people in the world. Today there are nearly 8 billion. This 8 billion figure would be impossible under any other mode of production. So as 1 of the prime innovators of capitalism, and through competition (economic and military) England probably did more than any other country in the world has ever done to achieve the prime objective of any species, reproduction. Communist's and Marxist's know that capitalism is the greatest social operating system (mode of production) that has ever existed, so why not start with that in your arguments to argue for something different. Why not also argue many features of capitalisms class structure and economic structure, are a great boon to humanity as a whole. Sure capitalism is exploitative, as were all class societies, but it is also the best at satisfying human needs. 1 of the big problems for throwing out capitalism in its totality, is the use of the price mechanism, don't you think? The price mechanism abstracted, is merely communicating best practices in production. The road I'm going down now, out of frustration with the old methods, is possibly leaning towards what Marx described as "utopian socialism". The right wing and the billionaires clothed themselves in freedom and democracy, so why not hang them with their own petard? Instead of looking for an armed social revolution, why not a democratic revolution? For the 1st time in history we have the means (Internet) for the people to speak out loud, so loud (in numbers) they cannot be ignored. Especially when the aims at the same aims the billionaires and the elite claim are their aims. This kind of example. www.change.org/p/who-wouldn-t-vote-for-p-e-a-c-e We need to start with the fundamentals. What is fundamental to human existence, water. 1/5 of the world live in water poverty. THIS, water, is the starting point. The global campaign for clean water for all, SECURE clean water, is a boon to us all, for if there is any global catastrophe having clean water in as many parts of the world as possible maximises the chance of species survival.
