To counter your point about the infotainment system; I think it's great that Mazda, by design, keeps the driver less distracted from the road by forcing you to use the dial. You shouldn't be using it while driving and any passenger would easily be able to navigate the menus with the dial in the center console. It's a really nice design too, as you can use it as a dial or as a joystick. The HUD in my Mazda 6 is extremely helpful at keeping my eyes on the road as well. All systems Mazda put in place to keep the driver more engaged in their vehicles. You shouldn't be doing anything else while driving but driving.

It only took me about 2-3 weeks to figure out the infotainment knob/buttons and now I can pretty much do it by feel. After a while your brain learns how many clicks to get where you want to be, and the "home" button always takes you back if you mess up and choose the wrong menu. It's not the best infotainment by any means, but works as intended with practice. Oh, and the Bose sound system still impresses nearly 4 years later...best factory system I've ever had in any car, and that includes the ELS system I had in 2013 Acura TSX

@@ln5747 That may be true and hopefully is since both Honda and Toyota shunned CVT's for the first decade or so of that form of transmission going mainstream..in other words they made sure they got it right before making the leap. (Unlike Nissan) The problem is even a good CVT is still a CVT, and that means less satisfying to use on a daily basis. Most people won't mind the "shifts" being simulated and not crisp in any way, but I'm not one of those. I rank transmissions in this order. 1. Manual, 2. Dual clutch automated manual, 3. Conventional torque converter auto, 4. CVT of any flavor.

@@jbm0866 Honda and Toyota have been doing CVTs for decades. Depends what you rank them based upon. A Toyota (maybe new Honda ones also) eCVT is likely far more reliable than dual clutch and arguably even torque converter. They do mega miles.

The only things I ever did to it besides brakes was new front struts, a fuel pump and heat/AC fan. After all those miles, the suspension was still tight, interior nice, and it didn't burn a drop of oil. The new owner of it wrote me a year later and said he loved it and it was still running great. A few years back I bought a used 2020 Corolla with about 13,000 miles on the clock. I buy low mileage used cars and I have had a great deal of good luck with them. I got the Corolla for an amazing price. Granted, my timing was excellent because it was just before the used car shortage that sent prices to the stratosphere. I ended up buying largely on price, which is really something I don't tend to do. I looked at the Mazda and the Civic. I loved them both, but I could not find a Honda for what I felt was a reasonable price, and there really wasn't a great selection of Mazdas at any price, and the ones I found were somewhere just south of the Civic pricewise. Strangely enough, I loved the color, celestite grey, and I very rarely find used cars in a color that I might actually order on a new car. So, cheaper, very low mileage, and a color I liked sold me on the Corolla. I guess you deal with what's at hand when shopping the used car market.

Agreed on all counts, this car is better than the stat sheet looks. You also have the optimal value spec! I've had this car for a year and only have two gripes: 1 - the fuel economy isn't as good as its rivals, 2 - while overall steering feel is great, I wish the rack was just a tiny bit faster given its weight.

Always remember that car companies always are cheating a little in fuel consumption in general in petrol engine you have to ad from 1,5 to 3 extra lit every 100 kilometers depends on how heavy and aerodynamic a car is and around 1 to 1,5 lit if its diesel engine! Be careful also on hybrid cars about battery condition, in plug in models how full battery is and in electric cars there are lots of factors but much much less mileage covering if driving outside a city!

I also have this same car (2021 model) and knew the fuel economy wasnt going to be near what the small displacement Honda turbos get, but I think its a fair tradeoff for the instant torque on tap at all times. I have a friend who has a 2019 Civic Touring and says the 1.5T has enough power for most everything, but quickly runs out of breath and gets sketchy if you try passing a line of 4-5 cars on the open highway. I think the extra liter of displacement and torque of the Mazda 2.5 is better suited for that. This past summer we went to Colorado and I didnt have any trouble passing on 2 lane roads even at some pretty high elevations. As for the steering, I know exactly what you mean, it needs a little more "steering" than you think it should for such a sporty feeling chassis. Of course I was coming from a 2016 GTI with a progressive steering rack and thought I may be a little spoiled. Other than that I find the steering feel pretty good for an electric assist rack...at least as good as the MK7 GTI for that.

This is going to be my next car. I drive for a living, so I know the financial numbers far better than the average consumer... people highly over-value MPG, to an astonishing degree. When I buy a vehicle, I assume getting 300k miles over 5 years. 30 mpg versus 45 mpg of a Corolla hybrid is well under 10k in gas price savings over a 300k mile vehicle lifespan. Assuming that mechanics won't charge more to work on hybrids after the warranty is over, and assuming that the much more complex hybrid system will not need more shop days over 300k miles, and the average consumer will save $5k over (their usage) 15 years. I always compare MPG buyers to mattress buyers. You buy the cheapest mattress in the discount store and then spend the next 10k hours of your life tossing and turning and getting bad sleep... but you'll get to say you saved a few thousand dollars. Same thing with a new vehicle... 300k miles is 10k hours of ass-time in that bucket seat behind that steering wheel driving that car. Was it fun, or a chore? Painful, or comfortable? Worth that amount of comfort or discomfort to your life, or do you just get to say how you saved a few thousand dollars when you bought your car 12 years ago to anyone who will listen while limping to the chiropractor's office? Reality of new car buying is... don't buy MPG. Buy what you want. Over 15-20 years, the difference between what you want and what you think will save you gas money is around the price of an Amazon Prime subscription. The more you know...

I bought my 2021 turbo hatch for many of the same reasons you did, styled inside and out like it came out of an Italian design studio, yet Japanese build quality and reliability. I had to have auto due the fact my finance' may need to drive it and she doesn't know how to drive manual and not interested in learning. Mazda's 6 speed box is an older design, but that means it's tried and true and unlike a CVT or fancy dual clutch, won't break the bank if it ever needs repair or replacement after the warranty expires. Also the AWD (not offered on any other compact other than a Subaru Impreza which is a huge step down in style and power) means going on a late fall or early spring road trip won't be an issue. Oh, and I was able to get my turbo hatch (not fully loaded) for just under 35k out the door, but I did buy during the pandemic when many people werent out car shopping, and it was right before chip shortages sparked dealerships into ridiculous markups. I truly believe if I had waited a couple months the asking price would have been nearer 40k or over and I would have walked. As it is I have no regrets. The new Civic and Corolla (hatchback) are fantastic cars and you can't go wrong (I'd pass on the Sentra, Impreza, Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra, but that's just me) with either one, but do yourself a favor and check out the Mazda 3 as well, you may find it's actually the one for you.

I got my New 2024 Red Mazda 3 sedan's preferred trim today (June 14,2024) in the Bay Area, California. Thanks @carhelpcorner for all the insights you give. Your videos were beneficial to my decision. My reason for the selection: 1. SUV vs Sedan: After test-driving a few cars I realized that I fit, drive, and enjoy sedans more. Also being single I don't need a big car. 2. Used Vs New: The used Market is getting better but still the cost is high for used cars, and I don't want to deal with cars that may have problems in the future. 3. Toyota vs Honda Vs Civic: Toyota Corolla seemed boring to me, Honda civic is beautiful and overall a better car but Mazda has a better interior somehow. Finally Mazda - I wanted a red color, black interior, good mileage, and something different from Tesla, Honda, and Toyota ( these three are so common in the Bay Area). So I tried to make a good deal and finally got my first car.

The main reason behind the non-touch screen is due to the fact that Mazda specifies they make the car for the driving experience, not the entertainment purposes. If they decided to put a touch screen in their vehicles it would take the drivers attention away from the road and the drive. It's important to understand if you're looking for a drivers car. Mazda is all about the driver and the car feeling in unison to their vision. Best analogy I can quote is that they see the car as an extension of the driver.

I have a 2018 Mazda-3Touring 5-door (2.5L 4 cylinder) automatic. Yes it is kind of small inside compared to the Civic and Corolla but that doesn't bother me. The only issue is the MPGs, when compared with the Civic and Corolla....any more than average acceleration slurps gas like crazy. The Civic main disadvantages are the CVT and turbo engine (the longest lasting, most reliable Civic you can buy is a 2.0 normally aspirated 4 cylinder and a 6-speed manual transmission. The Corolla is boring to drive. The Mazda offers the best of both worlds, fun to drive and a traditional automatic plus a (larger, torquier) non-boosted engine. Yes, Mazda does offer a turbo, but not in their mainstream trims. Now think about the more popular SUV category from these 3 automakers.....The RAV4 ($28K) offers an excellent 4 cyl non-boosted engine (200+ HP) and tranny (auto 8-speed) but then again it is boring to drive, noisy on the road and feels the cheapest. The CRV, which now starts at $31K, offers the same engine and tranny as in the Civic, although it is fun to drive, once again. The CX-5 now offers standard AWD and the same engine/tranny combo, which has to carry more weight but it begins at around $26K - $27K.

This has definitely reaffirmed my decision on going for the Mazda 3. Though I opted for the Carbon Edition, which is 1 tier lower than Premium, I got the hatchback with All-Wheel drive for $35,000 (US) fresh from the manufacturer with zero miles, and 5 year coverage for tire/wheel as part of the cost. I am a very "middle of the road" decision maker. I like a healthy balance between performance and efficiency, yet I do not need much space, and I much prefer tactile buttons over touch controls. I like the comfort of knowing I can get out of hazardous situations of weather or surrounding vehicles more reliably with AWD, and I do like the aesthetic of the grey exterior with black accents and the red seats. I am 26 years old raised by 2 generations of premium-car salesmen, so I've driven loads of high octane thrilling cars, as well as luxury leaders, and I'm happy with my purchase, barring the weak engine (4 cylinder) and annoying remote start that cuts off immediately upon opening the cabin door. I'd much prefer Audi for MOST of my preferences, but did not want to step into that price range this time around.

Congrats; I would probably have gone with the same car out of the three you mentioned (which would be the only three I'd look at in that category at as well), but I would have done the following changes: -Add AWD (I also live in Canada and like the extra traction of AWD plus winter tires) -Get the hatchback version (it's made in Japan as opposed to Mexico for the sedan, afaik, plus I prefer its looks) -Get a lighter color; e.g. silver or white, with that same red interior (the a/c is notoriously weak on Mazdas, from my own experience as well as what I've read, so a lighter color would absorb less heat in the summer which helps with the a/c!). Having said the above, if I find a screaming deal like you did, I would probably ignore those preferences and get a car like yours anyway since the deal would be too good to pass up, especially these days with car prices going through the roof.

But, outside of correcting a software issue that was causing problems, Mazda hasn't thus far had any problems with their cylinder deactivation on other models (such as the CX-5) that have had it for a while now from what I have read.

@@inctru Wow you really lucked out! Ford and other brands have had issues with cylinder deactivation for years. Mazda was stupid for introducing it to their reliable amazing cars.
