You forgot the most important thing, at least for me, the IBIS. For handheld photo shooting with no stabilized lenses is a VERY big bonus. I use vintage and manual lenses and having IBIS is a heavy game changer. You can focus accurately even with long lenses
@babymixswing2269
@babymixswing2269 Жыл бұрын
There is an interesting thing. The IBIS of R5/R5 is not well designed. Because it is the first time. If you don't believe it, go find a video about the 16mmF2.8 lens. You will find that if it is R5/R6 and 16mm, then the picture is ugly and twitching. But RP+16mm, no problem. Although Canon has just upgraded the firmware to 1.6, it is only a little improvement, and the surrounding area of the screen is still twitching. Therefore, I think there is something wrong with the IBIS design of R5/R6.

I have the RP, but now I also own the R7. For me I use both for shooting. As i need a wide angle and dynamic range of RP. But I need the speed and AF from the R7 for bird and aviation photo. For me as an hobbyist photographer, both body was less expensive and give me the best of both world. The other thing that R7 excel is to be able to handheld at more lower shutter speed due to it having IBIS. I've tried both with RF 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8. The R7 give me a lot more keeper than the RP even though the R7 is already 1.6X cropping.

Yah, that’s the setup I have and it works well. I would agree that the c-log would have to give your more flexibility, and possibly more usable range in the video file, this can be a somewhat complicated subject, because this doesn’t mean the sensor actually has more dynamic range. And as a backup for my R5. Really need a backup when doing cross country birding trips.

that´s exactly what I hoped for the R7 ... a second camera to my R6 and a " 1.6 teleconverter" with even more reach due to it´s 32mp sensor ... but canon (again) changed the button layout, made a fast camera with a small buffer, did not develop a battery grip ... why not take the body of the R5/6 an put an APSC sensor in it? Just like in the "good old days" of an EOS 5dMkIII and 7dMkII ... I cancelled my preorder for the R7 and started looking somewhere else.

In fact I can acceptable images even at ISO 8000. For the crop cameras, it cannot survive beyond ISO3200. So we can take pictures without flash indoor and yet it looks fantastic.

@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams Жыл бұрын
I think there's a place for the EOS RP but it loses virtually every battle with the R7 except for cost and dynamic range (and not by a lot on the DR). Most every comparison outside of those two and the R7 smokes the RP by a large margin. The RP is really only good for when you have a lot of time to make a decision to take a still photo. It's so slow that you can't take any sort of action shots (and by action I mean anything moving). I'm not an action photographer but I have birds outside my office window that land on the vines. To get a shot with them flying I just bump my M6II (or R7 if I had one) up to 14fps, focus and rattle off a second of shots then grab the best one and go back to work. At 5 fps (4 with AF!) the RP will miss getting the wings in the right spot, I know because I have some slower cameras and I spend a lot longer trying to get the shot even at 9fps of my M6I. For video the RP can't compare to other full frame cameras because of the massive crop but the R7 already has a 4K 1.6 crop so the frame of view is pretty comparable however, and this is a big however the RP loses it's DPAF in 4K mode. This means you really have an EOS M3 at that point and anyone who's owned any of those contrast detect AF cameras know the 4K video is mostly unusable so it should be considered a 1080p video camera which maintains DPAF. I don't remember if the RP is pixel/line binned but that would also be important to know. This means the RP's main strength is still photography where dynamic range is important. That's really it's main strength and even then it's not much of one. The R7 is just superior in every way - DPAF II, full non-pixel binned 4K, 3-6 times faster burst mode, IBIS etc. it's just not a comparison. I don't think the RP is a lump of coal but people should know what they're getting. In most cases the R10 probably competes better with the RP than the R7. The RP would still win on dynamic range by a bit (maybe) but lose on most everything else, just by a smaller margin. I haven't compared the RP and the R10 but that may be a more interesting and closer race. Oh, one afterthought that would be an advantage of the RP - wide angle. Trying to get decent wide angle lenses for a crop sensor is always a struggle. But we're talking anything wider than 24 mm (FF). Above 24mm and there's no real difference, you just do the math and buy the right lens (50mm instead of 85mm etc).
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams Жыл бұрын
I will add a comment to my own comment. I wasn't sure there was dynamic range information available for the R7 yet but I found some. Here's a comparison of the RP and the R7. Up to 1000 ISO the R7 is better, at the lowest ISO it's double that of the RP (maybe, I suspect the test). At 1000 it's roughly equal. At 51,000 ISO the RP has about a 10-12% advantage. Not significant. It's important to note that if you have an R7 at 12,000 ISO you have exactly the same dynamic range as the RP at 24,000. I don't know of any one that runs their ISO that high but if you want the same dynamic range of the FF sensor just half the ISO and carry on or stay under 1000 ISO. www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon%20EOS%20R7

If a shallow DOF is an important factor you’ll get way more of it for way cheaper with the RP… Example, a Viltrox 85mm F1.8 is $400 but to match that depth of field and field of view using a crop sensor you’d need a 50mm F1.2 lens, we’re talking $1,300 for EF or $2,200 for RF. Or a $999 EF 135mm F2 on the RP looks roughly like an 85mm F1.2 ($2,000+) would on a crop sensor. Slap the 50 or 85 F1.2, or sigma’s 105mm F1.4 Art on the RP and you’ll get looks that the crop sensor can’t replicate at all. So for something like portraiture the R7 can’t compete.
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams Жыл бұрын
@@andrewdoeshair Right, there are some cases where DOF is *harder* to do with a crop sensor mainly because of the lenses that companies choose to make since their target so far with RF mount has been full frame. I don't think that a comparison between a budget Viltrox 85/f1.8 and a Canon 50mm/f1.2 is really fair though. You could put an EF Samyang 85 f/1.4 on the R7 for $600 and it would give you a pretty similar image to the $999 EF 135. It all depends on what is available and in what focal lengths. The real advantage to full frame is that shallow DOF is *easier*. Most anything that can be done on FF can be done on a crop sensor if the lens is available until you get to really wide angle or really fast FF lenses. The reality though is that F/1.2 isn't very practical on a FF sensor as the depth of field is just too narrow. Not many people really want the end of a model's eye lashes in focus when her eye isn't. I find myself going with about f/2 on FF for nice pleasing DOF or f/1.4 on crop sensors. For wide angle and extreme depth of field I'd go FF without hesitation. For the best dynamic range I'd go with (new) FF sensors. The sensor in the RP does not have better dynamic range in a studio setting which is the RPs strength. It does have marginally better dynamic range at higher ISOs though. Most other things the crop sensor is perfectly fine at and for longer focal lengths the crop sensor may have price and size advantages.

@future62
@future62 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewdoeshair with EF glass you can use a speed booster adapter to get most of the DoF back. Not perfect but possible. If you absolutely need every last drop of shallow DoF then yea go FF. But I'd wager you would need to look at photos side by side to see the difference in 1 stop of DoF. I def do. It's not that big of a deal. At least not to sacrifice literally every other aspect of the camera, at least IMO. I currently shoot FF and had an EOS R for 2 years but in the RF lineup the R7 is the only camera I'd consider. If the lens situation improves enough I might switch again.

Battery life and the severe crop factor in 4k video that went to contrast based AF. I stuck with APS-C because I had mainly APS-C lenses. Same here, i began with wildlife some months ago and realized fast: The RP sucks for it. I have now the R7 as dedicated wildlife camera.... its AWESOME, but i will keep the RP for sure. I was also for over 10 years into Canon APS-C, but i always bought higher quality EF glass which the best of it is still in my hands (like 16-35 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 24-105, all L lenses)... Its really enjoying to have a "entry level" Full Frame like the RP with proper glass for it and as backup/wildlife body the R7. In my opinion a much better decision than the R6 or R5 I tried to replace the RP with a R6 for everything.... nope its too heavy and big, performs not as good as expected and so not even close to worth the money. If i would have gone for a single camera.... then the R5 but its much too expensive anyways (and still limited in some things like the R6 as well.. no pre burst for example which is handy for wildlife) In so many things i can take much more advantage over the RP+R7 than i could with R6 OR R5 Just yesterday at a pond. The ducks came much too close, literally to me so i just picked the RP with the telezoom instead of the R7 with the supertele (which was anyways for much too tight, 1280mm is a very hard to handheld hell!)

Especially the 16-35mm doesnt make sense without full frame, but also other lenses like the 70-200 or basically ALL primes like 50mm 1.8 are much more universal than on a crop sensor Full frame for the photographers, APS-C/ or even Micro 4 loser for videographers/wildlife (Until Sony deliver a more affordable full frame package)

FF sensors are great at giving you a blurred background, and tiny 1" sensors are fantastic for giving you zoom power in a tiny package. I now have many cameras, including a 6D Mark II. when that camera came out, reviewers complained about its dynamic range. However, it was better than the 5D Mark III, which was praised by the same influencers. When I recently took graduation portraits of my son, I used a FF camera, but when I was in his school's arena for the graduation ceremony, I used an old Sony RX10 with a 1" sensor (due to the size of the camera). I was happy with both sets of images.

I totally agree while the R7 is great for action and wildlife and 4K, but for general portrait and landscape full frame sensors will always be better for less noise in low light and a cleaner detailed image again in low light. I changed my mind btw - i sold the EOS RP, as much i liked fullframe, i will enter the full frame game with the EOS R5 Mk2 2nd hand in many years. But also only because i do more video and for basic landscape and family stuff im also fine with the R7 and a 17-55 2.8 and 10-20, otherwise im doing only wildlife anymore where i really need the proper gear. Also, i would consider the Meike Adapter with filter insert, 100$ more than the regular EF RF adapter but you get a V-ND and clear insert (100$ cost alone a clear insert at canon!). Especially on the EOS RP i enjoyed the filter adapter a lot when using mainly EF glass.

I currently shoot wildlife, nature, and some landscape with the RP and sigma 150-600 and can't wait to get rid of it. My keeper rate is about 50%. Horrible focus breathing, and pulsing to the point I just manual focus, 5 fps and miss half bird and waterfowl shots in action... I'm hoping to get an R7 or R5 within the next few months along with the 100-500 I would recommend the RP to someone who only has a budget of $1,000 for an entire rig. Or just strictly landscape, portrait stills. But even at that price point, once you add a lens, you're at 1,500 if you use the RF to EF adapter, and a used EF lens or 3rd party. I'd just probably pick up a used m6mk2 that is cheaper, faster, lighter, and has dpaf in 4k with more megapixels for cropping and for landscape, along with the sigma 1.4 trio. If you're doing strictly wildlife.....stay away from the RP

Interesting that you specify dynamic range as an advantage when DxOMark lists the RP's sensor as inferior to that of even the older EOS 80D. I tend to shoot a lot of high dynamic range for my landscapes, so I want a camera that can squeeze in more highlights and shadows at base ISO (no bracketing on a tripod). Funnily enough I've been watching you for a while now because I had the M50 and just last week I sold the M50 and bought the RP. I am in love with the RP! DOF, AF (eye tracking in servo) and low light performance really solidified my choice with the RP and not to mention getting my foot in the door for the RF glass. Been shooting a lot in the past week and I am 100% happy with my purchase! Also since you talk a heap about Viltrox, you should grab their 85mm 1.8 RF, copped it on Friday and used it for this whole weekend and I cannot complain about anything. The RP and the Viltrox 85 is great value for a novice like me, especially for street, car and portraits. The R7 was definitely in my consideration, but I wanted a full frame camera and I'm glad I did! In saying that, I will be upgrading to the R6 sooner or later and I may nab an R7 as a secondary camera and retire the RP unless something else from Canon comes out that catches my eye.

How about the image quality in the corners (especially CA!) at F2.8? (the Viltrox 85mm) Chromatic Abberation is a huge problem when used for astrophotography. Missing sharpness in the corners too, but they are not as bad or annoying. This lens is affordable, but im not sure if it really fits the needs of astrophotography, what i saw at least at F1.8 it "sucks" for it for sure. Funny how my super old, "cheap" 50mm 2.8 Macro lens from sigma just goes strong in AP, even with F2.8 wide open... completely flat, barely vignetting, super sharp (sharper than my 50mm F1.4 at F2.8 and MUCH better IQ in corners) Im thinking about exactly this lens for my RP - too often i wanted to make widefield images of the night sky but 16 and 50mm are not enough, in fact i would even need a 20-30mm lens too, but i realized after years on 16 and 50mm (lenses) and 750-2000mm (mirror telescopes) around 85mm would be PERFECT for most bigger stuff (like complete orion constellation which i had to make a very time consuming, but at least hi res mosaic with 750mm...) I would have gone for a small telescope.... but except super cheap (not full frame, ofc....) finder scopes there are NO telescopes out there with less than 300mm around.

Also, considering the fact Canon tend to make slower apertures... the better high ISO handling is again a HUGE bonus point for the RP. I nearly though of selling my RP and get a 100-500L (so 160-800mm) and R7. But F7.1, a crop sensor with poor low light capabilities, just doesnt seem like a usable combination at all especially not for the high price of R7 and 100-500L. Since i had the RP already and i just wanted a supertele focal range and "usable" autofocus, the much cheaper option (with better results!) was just a "poor mans" RF 800 F11 STM lens for the RP. Very awesome lens, got it for 750€ 2nd hand with guarantee left and hood+ UV filter. When i was hiking etc... i often or always had travel or bigger binoculars with me, with the RF 800 i have literally a superb (mono)cular and i can capture wildlife video/images. Very awesome! when it gets darker, you can even watch the fields, trees etc with the slightly "night vision" capabilities of the RPs live view, despite F11 the screen or viewfinder is still a lot brighter and with more contrast than scene for real (in fact even low light video with RF 800 F11 work very well for me, despite the fact that some 30 fps videos are running in darkness at 8fps but still A LOT BETTER than anything i had before.) I mean, i really would love any 600mm F4 or 800mm F5,6 supertele, but they are too expensive and too heavy. Plus... i dont enjoy the "typical" hiding and waiting in wildlife photography which this 3-6kg monsters are made for, i just enjoy walking around, enjoying the nature and looking for anything to capture!

@@iTristendo Yes, absolutely! If you dont mind 4K video and wildlife much, its a pretty good and compact allrounder. I have actually the RP, R6 and R7. (The R6 was a mistake, i tried to replace the RP, now i have to sell it) I am using my RP still as daily/allrounder camera and with basically most of my lenses. The R7 i will keep as dedicated wildlife/video camera. Its definately hard to justify 2 bodies, but the advantages are also very interesting (With RP im doing milky way shots/night landscape with 1.8 and 2.8 prime lenses and the R7 is running automated as imaging camera on the telescope) If i would want EVERYTHING i need in one camera (astrophotography on telescope or standalone with any prime lens, wildlife, regular photography/landscape, family etc,..) i would need to go for the R5, or "cheap out" with the R6. But the R6, especially the 20 MP uncropped didnt impress me at all in wildlife. Under very good light conditions the RP make even sharper images than the R6 which is a shame! I just found out, the R7, 6, 5, all of them are for basic photographing, especially with small/light primes for my taste too heavy and big, so i need to keep the RP anyways, just to make use of the 16-35mm 2.8 full frame lens (which would be unacceptable 28-56mm on R7)

I like shooting car racing and air shows, so this camera will work well for me. And with the EF-S lenses that I have, I will be able to use the camera for travel and general use as well. But today while I was browsing your KZbin channel a couple of exciting ideas came to mind which can help you to go viral and that I wanna discuss with you:💙

I kind of thought that the IBIS on the R7 would make it at least as good in low light as the RP

Lens and aparture is making Dof, not the sensor size. On the cropped sensor image will be cropped (like it's taken with "longer lens") but the dof will be the same 😉

@@dario0605 sorry, yes, you are correct, wider filed of view means that you will get closer to the subject, which gives a more blurry background.

I bought a screw driver in stead of a hammer and here is why I think you should too... If you want reach, get an R7. Its like shooting with an 81MP FF sensor and then cropping by a factor of 1.6 in the middle of the frame. If you want a wider field of view, get a R5/R6/RP...

I have the RP and the R7, and I question the idea that that the RP has better dynamic range. The RP can still take great photos, and it's maybe a stop better than the R7 with high ISO. I actually prefer the lens performance on the R7, since it crops the edges and corners. The RP is no slouch, and it deserves to remembered for affordable full frame, but the R7 actually performs better overall.

Is it fair to compare APS-C to full-frame? I mean, R7 is basically a top-tier Canon APS-C camera, while RP is meh full-frame.

Hi,i have the two of them and yes the RP have better quality pictures, to get the same results on the RP i use the 24-105 RF f4 and on the R7 i use my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and like that i have the same result but R7 shines in Autofocus fast camera you feel it in your hands and video e better technology but the RP better images Bokeh ..

You mentioned that the rp has significantly better dynamic range than the r7. I don't really agree with that, I think that statement is biased. They both have 14bit raw in photo and the r7 smokes the rp with clog 3 and 10bit color detph on top of having a far better processor. So... How exactly is the rp better than the r7? Plus there a viltrox speed booster available for the rf mount for those who want the full frame look. I think the rest of the video is great though, I Completely get the point, some people would still prefer the rp. But the advantage of the rp over the r7 are very small

Thanks for sharing, please see the pinned comment. I cover this in that video. Also note, speed boosters do reduce image quality, although I still like them anyways, but just something to be aware of.

What are your thoughts on the EOS RP vs R? Should I spend a little more for the R?
@villagranvicent
@villagranvicent Жыл бұрын
I don't think the difference between R and RP of 500 bucks would be considered "a little more" (considering I bought a like-new 6D for $410) I would put that extra money on the 24mm or the 35mm RF lens. IQ between those 3 cameras will be basically the same.

I own both. I'd debate some of the points here. I've had consistently better results with the R7 in low light. It's also stuck with a sensor that's exposed when changing lenses compared to the R7's sensor covered up when you change lenses. The R7 is also far faster in focus.. Bokeh can be overrated especially when most of the time, people don't shoot (I don't) at anything less than F4. The blurry background has its place, but both professionally/commercially and for personal, more in focus is often more valuable. Miss focus at a shallow depth of field and you have no room for recovery. And the battery.... it's terrible. I also only shoot with non-crop lenses bar 1 the 24 pancake ef-s (about 12 lenses) - What I do like about the RP is that it's quiet, simple, light, and a darn good backup and very helpful when shooting multicam video as long as have continuous power on it and feeding it direct from the mini hdmi. If you've been a Canon shooter with LPE6 batteries too, then that's just another reason to go R7 - carrying two battery formats around when shooting with multiple bodies is a royal pain.

The EOS RP has worse dynamic range at base ISO, but it catches up at higher ISO values. It can even match Sony A7RIV going ISO 1600 or above. On the other hand, at the price point of R7, the competition is quite fierce, all with various trade-offs. Just to name a few: EOS R, Panasonic S5, G9, GH5, Sony A7 III, A7C, Nikon Z5, Olympus EM-1 MK 3, EM-1X. It's really up to the buyer to decide what trade-offs and what features they are looking for.
