The RP has a full frame sensor, so if you value or need a full frame sensor, and fps aren't important to you, then yes, it's the better camera. But most people I know who have bought the R7, including myself, have done so specifically because it is a 32 megapixel APS-C camera. A ton of pixels on subject gets you closer. Crop ability is what it's all about. Reach. I have full frame cameras and love them for landscapes and everyday photography, but when I'm shooting a shy songbird, or a wolf at 120 yards, I need reach. I also need fps.

I got that wrong in the video, I was told in the comments of a previous video that it was not, and just assumed that was correct given the price point. I think that makes it Canons cheapest full frame camera AND Canons cheapest weather sealed body.

Great video! Yes, some compelling reasons to buy an RP for portrait shooting and general photography with occasional video, if a person does not need it for fast action or high video specs. When we sold our house the professional realty photographer used an RP with ultra-wide lens and I managed to download the images to check them out. Some great stuff. The RP is great for portrait or static images like realty.

Thanks for the candid and detailed presentation/review. I am not a professional and I don’t shoot video, and here are my 2 cents adding to your comments: I picked up the RP when it first came out in early 2019 and the R7 a month ago. For all intents and purposes they are the same new price when you take into considerations of the added features such as: IBIS, higher resolution, much improved auto focus, improved menu/operating system, dual cards (if you need it), bigger and commonly used battery, etc. I absolutely agree that RP is the perfect fit for budget minded, general photography, etc. However, the R7 should be considered more suitable for photographers who do wild life photography occasionally. It’s auto focus, higher pixel, and further reach allow you to practise wild life photography without breaking your bank getting the R5 or R6. It’s particularly true if you already owned some of the older lenses such as the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L. By the way, I love the compact size and light weight of the RP: 17.9oz vs 22.4oz (with battery & SD card, weighted myself). The best camera is the one you can afford without going into financing!

You missed something incremental: "Get the R7 if you want speed and do sports and bird photography" + and if you can afford it The R7 is just too expensive especially because its just APS-C! And the budget version, the R10 is too crippled by canon.

Regarding the dial thing, I've seen a lot of people talking about the R7's changes, with only two wheels (top and thumb wheel). As a long-time 7DII user, this is exactly what I've been shooting with for years. No third control like more expensive cameras. The thumb wheel did move from the 7DII, but it seems to be in a better ergonomic position so you only have to move your thumb to the side, not over and down. My principal control when I'm shooting fast in changing light conditions (I shoot concerts) is the shutter speed. I have that mapped to the thumb wheel on the 7DII, and the top dial controlling the aperture. ISO is done through the top dial with a single button-press to change it. I can't imagine much will change with my operations with the R7..........if I ever get the one I ordered.

I have an RP, never tried the R7. Yes it's true, the RP is absolutely terrible for capturing fast moving subjects. Even just shooting a model who was sort of slowly dancing around in a dress, it just kept whiffing the autofocus. So between the poor autofocus and the 4 frames per second, forget using it on anything faster than a slow walk. But I really like it for fashion and portrait shooting. The images are nice, and of course the colors are good. I prefer the color out of the RP more than my much more expensive Sony's.

This is my first time to bump into your content. Great content to be honest, comparing those two cameras. I bought RP couple months ago because I need to replace my old camera. At first, a lot of things were new to me since I'm using 450D as my hobby camera, now I'm enjoying my RP when taking portraits and also my collections. To he honest, it is a great camera, depending on how you use it. Since I'm not taking photos of wild life, I prefer this camera and enjoys it. Yeah, I agree with the words you said in the last part of the video, that we don't need to upgrade too much on the system if we don't upgrade our skillset.

Hi Mark interesting comparison and always a little tricky comparing FF with APSC. For a slightly different perspective I paid about US $1500 in 2005 ( $2100 in 2022 values) for the Canon 20D (still working) and US $ 1700 for the R7 last week so it’s worth just stepping back and admiring how far Canons APSC cameras have come and that they are cheaper than ever. The 20D is an 8megapixel camera with AF and a postage sized LCD thats pretty much it, not that I didn’t get some great images on it but the R7 is well, quite spectacularly better 😀 From a personal perspective, for my use case, I would be picking the R7 over the RP regardless of the price difference. Cheers from NZ 😀👍

Have the RP with 24-240. Love it. I mainly do travel grab shots. It's limitations are not a problem for what I do. Eg I don't do video at all. And that's the point. Horses for courses. This video provides excellent contrasts of features PLUS what it means in terms of subject matter. Now also have R50 with 100-400. Haven't done much with it. It has some better features than the RP. Eg Better focus system and more fps. And the lenses are fully interchangeable! So I've sort of filled some of the RP gaps with the R50 rather than going for an expensive APS-C.

Shame that they intentionally switched off dual pixel AF for protecting higher priced models. They can't do it with mark iii, as nobody will buy it!

I had an RP. It is great for portraits. I tried using it for video, but I would only get 40-60 mins per battery filming at 4k, which was very annoying from a production standpoint. Also it has a crop in 4k, so the low light performance was just OK. The 24-105 f4-7.1 was sooo bad. 35mm1.8 was pretty great, but auto focus is a bit slow by modern standards. I switched to A7iv with 3 Sigma 24-70 and couldn't be happier. The quality of 4k video I get is next-level. Super sharp, even at high ISO. Dynamic range on S-log is amazing. No record limits, dual SD cards, focus assist mapping, way better battery life. The list goes on.

Yeah the RPs battery is just ok for photography, as soon you start 4K video the battery drains not just normally fast, it drains super fast. I also wanted the A7S III or R version, whatever, but its price was 2nd hand and especially new a NO GO. The Mk2 version was too old and outdated for my taste. The RP was in my opinion a good compromise between getting fullframe but for a affordable, nearly fair price. It would be totally fair if not TOO GOOD price if Canon would not have used the cripple-hammer that hard on the RP!
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
@@harrison00xXx the cripple hammer is real. The battery life would be forgivable if you could charge it while filming, you'd just need an inexpensive PD power bank. The RP is not "officially" Weather sealed, but still Canon reports it's not particularly vulnerable due to tight assembly fitting and some degree of thought in the dials positioning and design. It HAS some degree of weather sealing. I wouldn't go to Borneo with ant RP ou won't have any problem in a light rain, especially if your lens is weather sealed. I really wish Canon had used the 6D sensor rather then the 6Dmkll: noise and render wise the 6Mp you get are not worth compared to quality of high ISO and image rendering. The 6D is still is among the best sensors canon ever made

I hope for a RP Mk2 and so..... Canon should focus more on the hobbyists, not just the professionals. Canon made a really good job with DSLRs in 2007 up to 2014 at least... affordable entry level, better midclass but still somehow affordable for the more "professional" user and good but super expensive gear as anywhere. Now the entry level DSLM bodies cost already 900$+... without a single lens to use it at all. Thats poor. I remember entry level DSLRs for 300$, brand new! Im looking at moving up from a Canon SL1. The Sl3 was my next choice but with the market moving to mirrorless it seem like I might be better moving to the R series. I use my SL1 casually and a majority of my photographs are taken on my phone. The Sl1 is for vacations and specific outing for taking photographs. So I think the R7 is over kill but the RP is a consideration. Video is important since I make the occasional KZbin video. I was looing at the M50 and M200. the rolling shutter issue on the R7 sounds serious and I am not sure if Clog is an important item on my list. The two available R7 Lense don't inspire me. I only have a telephoto for my Sl1 so its not like moving to a new lens system would be a huge consideration.

I really love my RP, i was coming from a 550D/600D and it was a HUGE STEP.... all my EF lenses (except a 75-300mm IS USM) perform better on mirrorless as expected. For me the reason to go for the RP was mainly the price and that i dont use(d... fk it^^) video. Well... things changed, i realized wildlife is more interesting after i got the RP (and RF 800 F11) and its very limiting if you want/need more than 1080p60 or 4k 25 fps or 4-5fps in burst. None the less, i dont regret my decision for the RP - The R7 is MUCH TOO EXPENSIVE and the R10 is too limited, especially in buffer and SD card write speed. The Price of the R10 is another thing considering its by far one of the worst APS-C sensors for modern DSLMs. The RP is ok for video (even better for vlogging than R5, R6, R7 etc), but NOT for anything beyond 60 fps. But i have to say... 1080p60 is very good and 4k in manual focus also nice, any other setting is very low bitrate and noticable worse.

Hi, I waited ages for mine as I was going for body only, in the end my local camera shop who had plenty of the R7s with kit lens phoned me and offered the camera at the body only price and just took the kit lens out, worked for me , if you are going body only you might like to suggest that to you local camera store. In the end its about customer relationships. So far I’m impressed, I’m using the R7 as a backup with extra reach for my R5 for events in particular (my previous backup was the 50D ) . I don’t find it too hard to swap between cameras although the two comments I’d make is that I miss the top LCD on the R7 and the R7 shutter sounds decidedly agricultural compared to the R5 😀 Also as Mark mentions the video is amazing , was testing even the 1080 120 over the weekend, amazing on a 32” Imac monitor.

IMHO, the RP does not hold a candle next to the R7. Much lower continuous shutter speed, no IBIS, shorter reach) make it unsuitable for use as an action or sport camera. There is no excuse for the RP to use a smaller battery than the EOS R or R7, basically its battery is used across the EOS M line.

Rocking the m6 mk2 +22mm (for the 35mm look ofcorse) and sigma 56mm since late 2019, looking for an upgrade to a full frame alongside the 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 2.0. My main concern is the focusing system and obviously looks like the rp is not better than the m6mk2, not sure about the R though.. any experience using the R? I know its better than the rp but will it perform better or on par with the m6mk2 focusing? Should i save and wait for the rp mkii (if it does comes out) or just get the R? R6 above is just to much money for me to fork out comfortably 😑

@HawkyLee
@HawkyLee 2 жыл бұрын
@@myfavoritecrew7920 well I've managed to test the RP (lucky me the 2nd photographer at a paid gig i was in was using it with a adapted sigma 70-200 and canon 24-70 f4) a few days after commenting to Mark. So during the gig We swap gears halfway along the shoot and we both agree and noticed the m6mkii is way better at overall focusing peformance. The RP focusing is nothing bad, its as accurate as it gets with mirrorless no front and back focusing issues unlike dslr. But laggs behind the m6mkii. We use the slow burst 3fps mode on both bodies 56mm(90mm) on the m6mkii and 90mm on his 70-200 sigma both at f2.8, same subject dancing back and fourth left and right about 25-26 continues shots about 5 times. Reviewing back the pics,(over 120 shots) the m6mkii have 95%-90% accurate focus vs 65%-70% on the RP. The RP is good, but not on par with the m6mkii. For iso, RP at 6400 even 12800 is cleaner. Safe to say you can get away with most of the shoots even as high as 12800. With the m6mkii, 12800 is unusable for me, some shots maybe but mostly no. And the bokeh is way apparent vs the apcs m6mkii. Gotta hand it to the fullframe sensor 😂 Dynamic range is just a tad better with the RP, its better but not enough wow factor to justify the peformance vs m6mkii. All i can say is due to the fullframe-ness of RP, the pic it self will turn out better. But for focus speed and performance, the m6mkii owns the RP. I dont mind the slow 3fps speed as long as it can nail every shots but my test proven otherwise. So for me, RP is not a good enough upgrade. Still praying to meet up with a R user so i can test out the focusing peformance though 😬

I really wanted to like canon. Everyone says the glass is amazing. I picked up a RF body and the 16mm and 50mm RF lenses. These were the worst budget lenses I have ever used. The focusing element protrudes out of the front of the lens when it focuses. Not even my cheap m43 lenses did that. I’ve came to the conclusion with canon it’s super cheap or super expensive if you want decent lenses l RF mount And then noticed canon takes away the histogram in video? I’ve not seen another company do that. All of this equipment was returned. Now amazed when I hear people talk about these budget bodies knowing they are most liking using these sub par prime lenses

Been using the R7 a few weeks now, so a few comments…the joystick is pointless in my opinion, selecting AF point if needed thru the touch screen (if right eye dominant) is much quicker. The auto level feature is incredibly useful for landscapes. Bokeh (blurry) backgrounds using high quality fast glass will blow out the background more than most people need…yes, I’d argue “professional” quality level ;-) As well, despite being made for FF, those RF and EF lenses will be able to hold up the 32mp detail (most noticeable on my 70-200 2.8 III, 135F2, and Tamron SP45). About the EVF, the RP I believe is limited to 60hz, where as the R7 can at least go up to 120hz (resolution is the same). Side note - DPP and so far DXO pureraw have done a much better job handling the cr3 files, especially at higher ISO. I’ve been extremely impressed with the results at 6400 and even 12,800.

I saw a review of the r7 on youtube (james reader) and he found that the r7 files were significantly less sharp with full frame lenses than the 20mp r6 files with the same lens. so this was the reason for me not to take an apsc camera for my second body. i thought i get bigger filesizes but a less sharp image than on an r6...
@IntothewestOkotoks
@IntothewestOkotoks 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheFalkingFive it depends. Depends on the lens, depends on the aperture. If you are always shooting outdoor portraits, weddings, events - and usually wide open - then yes, the R6 will likely be “sharper” and resolve better detail. If you’re stopping those lenses down (assuming L lenses), it’s possible you’ll get more detail from the R7 if the lenses can resolve more than 20mp. Regardless, two cameras at very different price points. It can be argued that the R5 will resolve more detail than a R6, and a Fujifilm GFX 100S will resolve more detail than a R5, and so on. It really depends on what your looking for, and expectation. I had a look at the 6 files he shared, and it’s really hard to go from just one sample of each - but running it through DPP and DXO pureraw (separately, to see how each renders the images), the 35 does look a bit soft on the R7, the 50 looks either soft or slightly out of focus, and the 85 files are very close (the R6 renders slightly more detail on the eye). It’s such a shallow depth of field that it’s hard to compare.

Mark, I have one question about the RP if you'll indulge me. I know the RP lacks native image stabilisation, so it essentially relies on the IS of a Canon lens. If I use the RP with a non-IS lens (e.g. the RF 16mm f2.8or the RF 50mm f1.8) the best thing is to use a tripod for every shot. Of course this isn't always possible, so can I still take sharp, unblurred photos hand-holding the RP if I adhere to the focal length rule (e.g. set shutter speed for faster than the lens length (e.g. at least 1/150s for the 50mm) in sufficient light? Thanks again for your patience with my noob questions!
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will give you sharp images. This is how I shoot all my non-ibis bodies on non-is lenses, you can often even go a bit lower depending on how steady you are, ie 1/100 for a 50mm), just need to experiment.
