@@KASLCustoms Awesome video I'm looking for a good low-end to top end cam myself for my budget biled GT40 explorer motor going into my sn95 project mustang!! Been trying to find a cam RPM range of 1, 250 too 6,250!! If they make a cam in the RPM range I've been searching everywhere!! Mustangs and Ford in general rules power to weight ratio all the way!! It's my obsession besides!! I've had too many crap from gm!! Government motors junk!! That's what I always say GM stands for!! Don't take it the wrong way there is a few good looking Chevys and powerhouses in them out there but the gm is not my thing!! LOL...😂😂😂🤫👍👍

You described exactly how a cam can make a driving experience different from stock. I have a XE274HR in my 91 notch I just picked up. The extra care and difficulty in driving in traffic and the manual steering in mine are things I like. Plus the lope is always worth it lol.

I am using this cam in a 347 build I'm putting together right now. When I degreed the cam I got 0.557 intake valve lift, 0.577 exhaust valve lift, 220/228 durations @0.050. I ended up having to advance the cam 2 degrees from "dot to dot" to set it at the 108 intake centerline. This is with trickflow 170's with 1.6 ratio rockers and using solid lifters to degree it.

New to the channel & am loving it from way down here in sunny south Florida. I’m in the process of selecting a cam for my black on black 92’ notchback (which I bought new when I was in high school). She’s only got 39k miles on her & is as clean as yours. She’s got an old SN-89 Paxton making 8lbs of boost, 24# injectors, 73mm C&L mass air, 65mm throttle body, 3.55’s, Tremec 3550, 155lph fuel pump, bbk 1-5/8” shorty headers w/ MAC off road h-pipe into 40 series flow masters, aluminum driveshaft, all urethane bushings, Eibach springs, shocks & struts, MM rear control arms & steering shaft. I’m getting ready to install a set of fully ported TFS 170cc Track Heat heads, Harland sharp 1.6 rockers, & an extrude hone ported Track Heat intake. I’m stuck between the XE270HR & your cam. Difference is yours has 112 degrees of lobe separation versus 114 degrees for the XE270HR I’m looking at. I wonder if the low rpm bucking would be less noticeable with 114 degrees of lobe separation as it should in theory idle a bit smoother. The XE270HR has slightly less valve lift as well 0.512 for both intake & exhaust versus 0.544 & 0.555 respectively for your cam. I want it to run as smoothly as possible at low rpm (below 2k) while still offering a significant power increase over the stock cam especially given the aforementioned future mods. Decisions decisions! Keep up the great work on the videos.

Hey bud! Thanks for reaching out!! That sounds like a very nice car you have there! You have very good points. Between your port work, and the blower, you are definitely going to be moving more air then I do. There have been some folks that have commented on here saying that they have chosen the 270 over the 266. I’m sure if you reached out to them they wouldn’t mind giving you their experience with the 270. All of them seem like very solid folks. Sorry I could be of more help... I would definitely be asking the same questions if I was in your boat. Thanks for reaching out and keep me posted on what you decide 🙏👍👊

Finally, someone who is sensible and understands that for a streetcar it’s just not just about horse power, it’s about the characteristics of the engine that make the car an exciting and fast car on the street. The saying that “the more horsepower the better” is nonsense. I have been telling people this for years, which is that it is better to have a lower horsepower engine that is responsive all the way through the rpm range as compared a high-performance street engine that makes horsepower and torque high in the rpm range. For example, a lot of people who have very high horsepower engines in Fox mfor example are puzzled when they are beaten on the street by cars that has have half the horsepower that they have. I’ve driven in some cars that had normally aspirated engines that were pushing 600 to 650 hp, but the cars were boring to drive on the street because they were unresponsive up until 4500 RPM. Not only that, but where in the city are you going shift through all the gears ⚙️ uwith a 650 - 700 hp fox body mustang? I used to own a limited number number 23, 1993 fox body mustang by a company named Auto Kraft. I never liked Porsches, because I thought they were ugly and overrated Volkswagens with engines behind the rear wheels. I guess in 2004 I drove the 996 Porsche and 1991 Porsche Boxster S and both cars were boring to drive because of the engines were so unresponsive and flat. On the other hand the Fox Body Mustang was much more thrilling to drive than the Porsche. Magazines were giving these Porsches great lap times around tracks only because is he you’re on a race track rpm range is really low 4500 RPM. The owners son at factory five has a 400 hp fox body and his father told me that this car is extremely fast on the street because it was responsive all the way through the rpm range.

Hi from Stockholm, Sweden. Great 👍 informative video, I have exactly the same experiences with stock vs Comp..tried a few different combos and cams for my 88 (now) Mass Air, 5 speed vert. I even ran the XE264hr with speed density still controlling the motor and got it to “behave” pretty well..yet, severe traffic and 2.73 gear combined with the 264 Comp was not for the “inexperienced” driver 😁..like you said.

Nicely done. I went with the Comp xe282hr cam with my 347 Afr 185s rpm air gap intake and Aed 750 carb. 4.30s in the rear with a 6 speed and the car runs and drives great. A little chugging but they’re not Cadillacs. I can literally go out driving in the morning and drive it alll day and I still don’t want to get out of the car. Like you said they’re really fun cars and as long as you’re still having fun that’s what matters. Long tube headers and 3 inch Flownasters and tailpipes like music to my ears. I have the XE266HR in my 90. I actually had to widen the valve notches on the intake side with GT40 heads. You mentioned the alphabet cams are very old grinds. Ironically the XE266HR is getting to be pretty old too. I bought mine twenty years ago.

Oh wow! Yes you are correct on the age of this comp design. That said, if it ain’t broke, why fox it 😉. These days unless you're running something with an insaley low LSA or just a honkin cam, it's usually the tune when it bucks down low. I had a 98 SS camaro with 243 heads and a fast 92 intake and it had a donkey dick cam in it when I bought it (TSP magic stick 4, didn't much like it with 3.55s in the rear, felt soggy driving around town) but it had great manners. Never bucked on me even when poking around a parking lot.

Great video!! Your cam will make for a great driver/power maker with great DRIVABILITY. I run a Lunati cams 51014 cam with Windsor Sr. heads Milled to 58cc. It makes really good power with diecent drivability. Not that I'm older I would like more drivability, and I find myself missing my old E303 which is another great cam that I've used with the same aforementioned heads and the power was still good, with the E303 having much better vacuum and drivability. Having good heads help the mild E- cam contrary to what some folks may say. Can't put any performance cam with stock E7 heads and expect good results. The E-cam WORKS! Lastly as far as so called old cams go. The favored TFS stage 1 is about as old as the letter cams. TFS copied the Lunati 51014 and called it the TFS stage 1. The 51014 started in the early 1990's, (is also when I purchased mine) so I laugh when people act like the TFS stage 1 is new tech😂! So when people ask what can I run I sometimes call it the TFS stage 1 so people will know what I'm talking about. Most don't know about the 51014 cam which that's what it actually is even though the specs are the same. Also I'm running a dual plane intake/holley hp carb setup.

@@KASLCustoms Thanks! I'm very happy for the most part with my setup. It's very a very strong running street car even for today's standards. Sound like you have a really nice setup as well. Judging from what you mentioned about you performance wants and the the setup, I'd probably say if you come to a point where you want more power, I'd probably say to keep everything the same and look into a 331 or 347 rotating assembly. That would give a very good power increase especially torque within the rpm range you like(bare minimum 380 feet pound of torque or more with 331). These little 302s are fun street motors if built within reason.. I feel most people tend to take these motors too far in the build department. Just my opinion. Stroker will be my next move down the road and keeping her N/A with no other changes to my combo. I'm personally liking the 331 myself. Better rod ratio and definitely good oil control for longevity compared to the 347.

Funny how often you come across mistaken information online… The Lunati 51014 and TFS 1 cams are SIMILAR in spec but certainly not identical as mentioned above. The TFS is .499/.510 and the Lunati is .500/.510 for lift. They both have the same 112 LSA, but the duration values are different as well. I’m wanting to say .276/.282 on the TFS and .280/.286 on the Lunati. but I don’t have a cheat sheet in front of me to be certain, I just know they’re different. Not super different, but thought someone might appreciate the accuracy.
@hotrodray6802
@hotrodray6802 2 жыл бұрын
Even cams with all identical spec numbers can have differences in lobe ramp rates both opening and closing. Often minor variations can make significant differences. Also rockers of identical ratios (eg 1.6) can have significantly different off the seat rates due to the positions of the pushrod, fulcrum, and tip angles. Jones Cams in VA, is highly recommended by David Vizard.

I going fresh short block with aftermarket pistons so I'll have a lot of head choices and afr enforcers seem like a no brainier but I've pondered thee 165 or 1851s, I'd love to hear from someone that's knows of a comparison on a stock displacement 5.0 between the 2 firsthand. Is there a highly noticable lower rpm Tq between the two or if it's fairly negligible. If so why bother with the 165 even tho I have seen an engine Dyno run of prestige motorsports on KZbin with over 500hp on a 347 with 165 versions so they obviously flow good but why leave any a little on the table if there's no real downside. Typically 20cc isn't a huge difference that youtube guy with the 95 onyx car that has TFS 11r 190 heads on a stock 302 and seems to have good drivability and runs strong and makes like 350ish hp to the wheel if I remember right, can remember intake gt40 maybe.

PCV is a controlled air leak. Pinching the hose makes the mixture richer until you're in closed loop/ O2 sensors. This also can alter the vacuum slightly. On stock A9Ls without a tune, unplug the mass air and see if it runs better. It will be different, especially in AOD cars. Using the KOEO/KOER self diagnoses into phase 3 often helps diagnose.

Mass Air sensors have a slot on the plug. All Ford sensors that fit in are the same. Early 4.6 crown vics all sensors are the same as HOs. Grab real Motorcraft parts at junk yards for pennies. Avoid China. BTW Ford only used 4 different sensors from 86- 2000+

@KASLCustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Hey bud - thanks for reaching out! You have good taste in parts 😉. Two major pieces of the puzzle you are missing are rocker length, and push rod length. I run 1.6 trick flow roller tip rockers on my car. I also have an adjustable pushrod that I use to measure the exact length pushrod I need so that my roller tip is squarely contacting the dead centre of the valve end. If I remember correctly, I believe I used comp cam 6.250 pushrods. All that said, I would only use this information as a guide because all engine combos are different (For example, trick flow heads may be thicker or thinner then AFR 165's - like I have). MAKE SURE you measure because you would hate to go to all this trouble only to have to take it all apart and fix broken stuff.... I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions 👍

Yes I’ve done a bunch of videos on the full process. I’m in Canada and I’ve had my car tuned by Tecmotion in Calgary Alberta. Tecmotion also has a KZbin channel 👍

Hey, just a quick question, what's the gas mileage like with the 266 compared the the stock cam, I'm thinking of the same cam, because it is still a daily driver for the wife, and a jump in gas usage is expected, but bye how much have you noticed since the cam changes, thanks. Rob

Hi there. I never really tracked it much before the upgrade but after, I still get decent mileage 16-18mpg in town and 22-24 on the highway 👍

Why did you go with this 266 cam over the XE274HR specifically?

It's been a few years since I made this decision so my info/reseach has become a little "foggy." That said, the 274 has a slight higher rpm range (Don't quote me but for example: 1800-6700rpm) where the 266 was lower (again for example: 1500-6500rpm). My reasoning at the time was: I'm not racing my car - intentionally 😉 - and therefore it spends most of its time at lower to mid range rpms. With that said, I didn't see the use in losing lower rpm "operating range" only to gain in the higher rpm range because I almost never take my car up to its rpm limit. Long story short, for what I do with my car and how I drive it, I felt that the 266 better suited my application than the 274. Hope that helps!

People get hung up on peak numbers, The engine spends most of its life under the curve. In the end whatever floats your boat is A OK. Cars are a whole recipe with 4.10s or something the shorter cam may feel to short but if the redline is still 6k its a non issue. The lurch is usually indicative of an IAC issue the ECU just can't comprehend the pulse surge. Sees crank accel pulls away sees engine dieing add back in cycle continues. The speed density cars were terrible in parking lots.
