Thx Dan! Im 60yrs old and i love to keep learning new and old tricks of engine building. I use to run felpro head gaskets as a fuseable link. They would hold 175shot of gas ,anymore it would let me know its time to refresh. And never hurt a piston.

It worked for me also flipping the pistons on 289s and 302s and FEs soften the chambers and they rev quicker and higher. A 410 turned into a beast with ARP bolts and flipped flat tops I pulled out of a .015 over 360FE , forged and flipped in the Merc 410, flywheel from a 4 speed 428 CJ with a top loader and I told folks it was a 390 and at 413 ci it could almost pull the Mustangs front wheels.

Great Video! love building small Fords. you hit on a couple of key points to look for in building a Small block Ford. the head gasket placement(water holes always to the back!), head bolts/studs need sealant on the lower(exhaust) row, oil pump drive shaft check for seating & use the spring washer correctly. I don't now if flipping an offset piston really works in a mild engine but it wont hurt anything. couple things I do whenever i build a 289/302 now: 1. Use that exact oil pump if the engine will see some revs, I really like the doweled cover & the support for the rotor that goes through the cover plate. also you can adjust the oil relief spring for pressure. 2. Tap the front oil galleries for pipe plugs 3. have the decks surfaced - remember these things are 20-40 years old and have seen so many head cycles! lower side tends to sink and having fresh surfaces is worth the $150-$180 to deck it. also good for compression ratio which is tough to get with a short stroke engine. 4. if you need a decent replacement piston, the Speed Pro L2488F is nearly a replacement without that little dish - has a tall compression height & the metric(thinner) ring pack. have had good luck with them. 5. front damper - the 50 oz in un balance cranks won't ever be as good as a 28 oz but for under 6500 they will last a while. the good damper does help as the factory style rubber ring types will fail over time and once that outer ring spins its going to hurt itself quickly. I be this thing runs really well - that cobra cam doesn't have much overlap so running on SD should be ok. the extra airflow from the heads & intake may need more fuel but shes going to run well!!!!

Look forward to watching old videos over and over to help with the build. I wouldn't be able to do this build if it wasn't for guys like yourself posting the content that you do, so thank you. Also, I found your page originally via reference by brew2l, so a thanks also goes out to that channel as well. Finally an intro without rap or heavy metal that is actually can be understood and more than 5 words that not repeated lol Factory forged pistons has stainless top ring that should never wear out and are thrown out for flake proned moly coated ones. Ive had 3 stock from Ford short blocks that the piston was between .005-.010 out of the hole and they did run better than the others out there but have flipped those around and have VTP clearance issues with an E cam but was easily cured with a piston fly cutter

I am currently rebuilding my 302, as the oil pump saw a shard of a snap ring from the rocker arms… anyways, I have heard about flipping pistons and always wanted to try this. Well I have just tried to do that and I can tell you it does not do anything. With a dial indicator and micrometer, the piston does not drop any further than stock and doesn’t rise further than stock. I compared a stock piston stroke to piston #1 backwards in cylinder #5 and I tried flipping piston #7 in its own cylinder. No orientation changed anything. Was actually disappointed 😂. That is what I have found with trying that, just an FYI for anyone.

along with the piston offset to help with TDC dwell, if you want to fake a longer connecting rod (the Boss 302 used connecting rods from the 289, so if you can find a piston to match, that's the way to go) is to use offset connecting rod shells. This will do more for getting zero deck height if you find the block wasn't decked enough, but the point is, use an oversized connecting rod bearing shell on the big end of the rod, and an equally undersized shell inside the rod cap. now you've pushed the entire rod/piston assembly a little higher up the bore. This plus swapping piston pin offsets won't make noticable power on their own, but when you do something to gain 10 hp there, 10 hp here, and 10 hp over there (like using offset deck pins to shift the cylinder head location in respect to the bore's centerline to unshroud a valve), they add up. For example, a crank scraper can be fabbed for a dollar or less and will also add some power at higher RPMs. I'd also add, the camshaft is easier to install if you do it first. stand the block up on its bellhousing, let gravity help out, and you can reach into the crankcase to guide it when the reciprocating assembly isn't in the way. And torquing down fasteners or removing stuck ones might be easier if one stands on the engine stand to keep it from running away.

Debating picking up a 88 LX coup that’s been 93 cobra swapped. Has a TKX trans and the car is real clean overall so definitely ready for some power. Just bolt ons at the moment but what would I need to hit 330-350whp? Also debating carb swapping since no one tunes foxes in my area. Edit: Motor has 39K original miles and was a nicely done swap real clean. I was told it has BBK long tubes, under drive, 3.73 gears, smog delete, ported cobra intake, and stiffer springs to rev a little higher. Also had the rockers changed to get a little more lift out of the stock cam.

Always silicone the timing cover gasket to the timing cover and not the block so when you do a cam change the gasket won’t be stuck to the block cause when you scrape the gasket off it will fall into the oil pan and you can clean the gasket off the timing cover on the table and do the water pump the same way. It just makes clean up easier and less chance of getting unwanted trash in the motor
