I was shocked to find out that I could never shave again after this - WHY would it matter what you do with shaving after amputation?

I never write youtube comments, but this video made me very emotional. When I was 14 I was in an accident and the doctors told me they would have to amputate my leg in the exact same spot as yours. I was a ballet dancer and that was devastating. My mom called every single doctor she could find and finally one of them came to the hospital and saved my leg. I sometimes forget how lucky I am. You're such a beautiful person. I really appreciate how open you are about your story.

I have a strip of dark grass along the outsides of the front of my calf, a moderate amount on the front lining my shin bone, hardly any on the inside, a little bit just above my ankle in the back, and invisible peach fuzz covering the back. 1/3 of my leg is a field and 1/3 is barren. From my knees up is all peach fuzz. Until you get to my armpits. I thought it was the same for everyone. I heard someone say they thought you were only supposed to shave the back of your legs and I have been so confused ever since. I just learned that hair patterns are not all the same

Unfortunately, she had two. The first one was fine surgically, but she had a serious fall a few weeks afterward (and sued a restaurant for having a greasy floor and no signs… the settlement was better than nothing, but not a fully favorable outcome). So there eventually had to be a second amputation due to that fall. She has a separate video talking about that now that any NDAs surrounding the claim have expired. The American legal system is such a joke. Definitely recommend the video, though.

I can kind of relate to this, I became diabetic at a young age and one of the risks of that is poor healing and increased infection risk, especially on the lower extremities. Never really had any issues before but I recently nicked above my ankle shaving, the most superficial wound and it’s taken me 6 weeks to get to the scarring stage. Haven’t shaved since, doesn’t seem worth it.

@kpopgirl1992 2 жыл бұрын
@@mindianaj0nes I use Veet! It's the best brand out there. There's another Japanese brand I use but I can't remember it atm. The process is the same no matter the brand - apply it on generously (make sure all the hair is coated), wait 3-6 minutes (depending on what the brand recommends - read the instructions!), scrape it off with the plastic spatula that comes with the product, and then rinse it off with warm water. However, depilatory creams only work when the leg hair is fairly long, so it will require you to grow out the leg hair you do have before you use it. but I promise it's worth it! You won't need to shave for another 2-3 weeks.

I’m not an amputee so this is going to sound odd. I’ve had very little body hair my entire life so I always felt embarrassed bc I shaved my legs, etc. once or twice a year. I love your videos. My mother became an amputee in 2008 and she passed in 2016. It was due to diabetic complications and I'm also diabetic. Mom was 62 when she passed and I'm now 47 and the fact that I may, at some point, become an amputee, I find your videos very informative. My mother didn't shave often, but when it began to really bother her, she would. She did have a prosthetic, but she rarely wore it as it was very painful. When she was being fitted for the prosthetic, it was discovered that her leg, amputated like yours at just below the knee, was done wrong. There are 2 bones in that area of the leg and one gets cut a little shorter than the other. Her bones were severed wrong. The wrong bone was left too long while the other was cut shorter and so wearing her leg was extremely painful.

As a retired doctor here are a few options I have seen for hair removal. 1) waxing 2) suggaring 3)laser hair removal 4) depilatory creams . I like the suggaring. If you do it regularly, your hair follicles adapt and the hairs get easier to pull out. You don't really have to shave it anyway. Decide what you like not what someone else wants. I don't know if shaving your leg will make it feel hotter in the prosthesis. I usually cut my hair short, 1/2 inch. Once I decided to shave my head, thinking it would feel cooler. Surprise, it actually made my head feel hot. I think the short hair wicked some of the sweat up, but without it, it just sat on my skin and felt hot.

After spending weeks holding ice to my head at work and not sleeping, I finally caved and saw a Dr about my neck pain. With chronic illness, it seems like as soon as I tell a Dr somethings wrong it turns out to be nothing, so I've learned to just wait it out. Welp, turns out I have spinal degeneration along with a neck sprain. Sometimes it seems like right when you get used to the "program" the rules change. Love this community of people who get it.

As a partial foot amputee I found this very interesting and informative. I did not know about the calf muscle being wrapped around the bone like that. I have several places that have skin over bone with no padding whatsoever, the bottom of a half toe for example, and it is excruciating. I had always assumed that leg amputees all had to deal with that same issue. I’m curious how that feels when you put your weight on it. Is it similar to other parts of your body that have muscle to cushion the bones, like the buttocks?
@SolidChristianTeachings
@SolidChristianTeachings 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds to me like your doctor malpractices. Straight bone with only a thin layer of skin covering it is NOT how any part of the human body that bears weight is designed to be. I bet you could get a surgery to fix that. They’d probably have to remove that toe (since it’s too late to put any fresh muscle over it) but that sounds more comfortable in some ways.
@ZomBunny
@ZomBunny 2 жыл бұрын
I figure hands and feet are probably problematic in that aspect for amputations, they generally don't have a lot of meat to begin with so there isn't much to wrap around anything other than the skin itself.

@@ZomBunny this. There's only so much flesh to work with, and he said the issue started with a lawnmower so the surgeon was probably working with limited options. In the hands it's probably not that big of an issue as you can just avoid impacting/using the affected area. The foot however, you have to use a lot even when you try to avoid using it. So it's a recipe for a long drawn out and painful healing process until the body fully heals/scars and adapts to the amputation. That's not even considering nerve damage which really can't be helped under some circumstances.

@@epona9166 reminds me of how my dad sometimes harps on how the express checkout lines are labeled "10 items or less" instead of "10 items or fewer". 'less' might be grammatically wrong, but it saves 1 letter in writing and 1 syllable in speech, so in a way it actually fits better with the idea of an express lane, not that my dad would ever accept that logic.

Hi! I’m a relatively new below the knee amputee on the left side, but I was never warned of this. Obviously, I get why it’s a bad idea, (because complications) but still I find it weird that I wasn’t given that bit of info. Granted, I rarely shave anyway, because I have very fair, fine hair on my legs. But still a good point of advice. It’s one of those things about being an amputee that you don’t really think about until it’s in your face. But, such is life!

I was also told by my doctor not to shave my legs!! my skin’s too thin, my ingrown infections were pretty bad, lupus is fun etc etc. i honestly did NOT look back because it saved so much time, but i was worried that I’d lose the more traditional feminine aesthetic, like you said. Turns out my leg hair is pretty thin and light and virtually unnoticeable from a normal distance. I’m seeing that being feminine is totally possible even with leg hair. It’s been a far easier road than i thought 🥰 I’m curious about others’ experiences!

I'm a non-amputee that don't shave my legs. I am however a former synchro swimmer and it turns out that you need some leg hair to be able to feel where the surface of the water touches your legs. So after a while I stopped bother to shave my legs in special ways to still feel the water and then just stopped shaving them at all and never started again after I stopped swimming. I have light and thin hairs and they are not seen if you don't look closely. I save a tremendous amount of time and still feel feminine even though that's not so important to me.. :)

I mean if you think about it women all naturally have leg hair, so it can't possibly be unfeminine if that's what women actually look like without modification! My mom never shaved her legs until she moved to Canada because it just wasn't a thing women did where she grew up. It's amazing how deeply we learn the cultural things around us though. Because even though I think this, I'm used to seeing women with little or no leg hair so now that's what feels normal to me too.

Also, it helps me become more comfortable with the issue, so that when I come across amputees while I am out in the world, I hope that seeing it as a normal thing, will make it easier for me not to stare and become less awkward. If I had an amputation, I don't think that I would want to be defined by it and want to be able to show that respect for people who are different from me. I have had terrible things happen to me. I also have some disabilities and my mind is Neuro divergent. I don't want to be seen as a tragedy and I don't want to treat other people that way. Hi Jo! I am glad I found your channel through recommendations! C: My family largely consists of orthopedics (me excluded, I was only part of customer service xD) but talking about life experiences with patients was always something I enjoyed a LOT! I got somewhat derpy happy when I saw how pretty your leg was made and that I still recognized so many parts of it, including your Össur Iceross base liner! >U < The thing that surprised me most was how long your liners were and that you were using a double sheath too, especially with an under-knee surgery done. This is my first video, but I can tell you are an active, lively and strong woman. Also I totally get your irritation with the broken symmetry and the not shaving = odd femininity. I would probably try waxing my legs or use laser treatment to reduce hair growth permanently on my leg. It's absolutely valid though to just let it grow. Some hair shouldn't define if a woman is feminine or not. (post-mastectomy patients heard the same thing from me) You look fantastic and so does your cute cat! What a fluff ball! ;D Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks for the insight in your life!

Unfortunately both of those alternatives wouldn’t work either. Waxing also causes micro abrasions and significant risk of ingrown hairs when the hair is regrowing-so again, same risk of bacteria building up and getting infected. And laser hair removal isn’t much better. 1) “hair removal” it is a misnomer. It doesn’t “remove” hair at all. It just makes thinner, lighter hair grow back 2) it can damage the skin and make the skin thin-not idea for something with lots of friction and sweaty like her stump inside the prosthetics. Also, when it is done-it can damage the skin and she’d be unable to wear her prosthetic for a while when it is healing. It isn’t worth the risk of getting her limb infected-and having it need to get amputated even further.

One of my favorite jobs was as a prosthetic tech (the unseen gnome in the back who actually makes the limbs). Pay was crap, conditions less than healthy (lots of very harmful chemicals), but it was the most rewarding job I've ever had. I say that because there were posters all over the lab and patient area (why they were in the lab I have no idea, no patients back there) and half of the posters were PSA's saying "Keep the Stump Clean!". The risk of infection is serious. As you know there is a lot to learn as a new amputee and missing a few tips is easy to do. Shaving is also a 'normalizing' behavior and something that might be done just to try to reclaim a bit of agency and familiarity. Choosing not to shave is wise Jo, thank you for making this video. It might just save the life of a new amputee who didn't get the memo on shaving.

I thought of moving away entirely from suction as an attachment aid, in favor of a bespoke, 3D-printed micromesh. A 3D scanner would capture the precise measurements of the leg attachment surface, an algorithm would modify the vertices of that mesh to accommodate the slight compression necessary to maintain sufficient attachment pressure (not suction, just compression against the attachment surface), and the mesh would itself be 3D, such that multiple layers were separated by vertical trusses attaching between them, effectively holding them a millimeter or two apart. Enough of them together could offer a bit of additional structural support like your current compression fabric does. This would allow ambient air to at least be exposed to the skin that is part of the attachment surface. A more sophisticated solution would be to cover the mesh with a micro-thin polyester and fit a tiny, hearing-aid-battery-powered micropump to force air through the bottom of the mesh to circulate inside and then exhaust the heated air through vents just below the top seam of the mesh. Also, if it would not be impertinent, what is the difference in your weight pre- and post-amputation, such that this difference is attributed to the imbalance between your intact leg and your prosthetic-mounted leg?

I find you very inspiring. I have 3 different autoimmune disorders which affect my joints, soft tissues, and nerves. It's a completely different thing, but I know that feeling of being told that suddenly certain things are not allowed for you anymore. Or certain things are your life now, whether you want it or not. It sucks and it's not fair and it's hard to just be like okso let's go with this all the time. You have a really healthy outlook on your amputation and it is awesome that you will share your story. As a side note...isn't it annoying that you're supposed to be "inspiring " all the time? That's one of the things that I just flipping hate sometimes about being sick. Every time I do something I also gotta "inspire" somebody too. It's exhausting.

I didn't know a thing about the issues which amputees have to face. Thank you for talking so openly. This lifts taboos from topics, that are quite normal and shouldn't be a taboo at all. 👍
