I don’t meditate, but I found playing BOTW as close to meditation as I’ve ever gotten. Which has led to how I play totk, and why I have 400 hours on the game. Every time I decide to play tears of the kingdom, all i do is spend 10 minutes walking to a place I wanna go, and then sit AFK for several hours while doing schoolwork or anything else. After my kids were born, I would replay the games for them, and read the dialogue from the cut scenes, and got them into it. So now that you’re “adulting”, there will be ebs and flows to your gaming life. Your priorities will change a lot. Now at 50, most the time I just watch my youngest a 10 year old play. When totk came out, it’s the only game that maybe get back into video games, besides Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99. I got a business to run, so they don’t lose time for one game. Although, I didn’t mind the mundaneness of all the tasks and puzzles to solve, to me it’s relaxing, and a nice escape. What I actually don’t like, is that they haven’t seem to modernized the story. The Zelda character herself is the same old, damsel in distress, reluctant and struggling to realize her powers. ***SPOILERS**** I think they should have ended her character in a similar way they end the Studio Ghibli character. She should have never been able to return to her human form. It would have made the story more legendary and epic and tragic, give them more emotional gravitas to the story.

BotW is one of my favourite Zelda games of all time (alongside the first four and Majora's Mask) but Tears of the Kingdom just doesn't click with me at all. The sky island tutorial was nowhere near as interesting as the Great Plateau, and after making it through and spending about eight hours in Hyrule I put the game down, picked it up again a month later and put it down again after ten more hours of being bored. Gave it a third go two weeks ago and my patience lasted for one Sunday morning. The entire game just feels oversaturated with tedious busywork (can't walk more than twenty steps without running into a Korok Backpacker or a Hudson signpost dude), and the Ultra Hand and Fuse gimmicks are clunky and make the game grind down to a halt way too often. The majority of the thirty or so shrines I found so far seemed to revolve around glueing random junk together and cheese my way to the exit. Felt more like abusing gameplay mechanics than actual puzzle solving, but at least it was not as bad as BotW's motion sensor shrines. One a positive note: I liked seeing Like-Likes and encountering a Gleeok in the overworld. Just wish they had spent more of that six year development time on creating Leevers, Tektites, Moldorms and clever dungeons and less on making 95% of the gameplay revolve around a tedious HyruLego gimmick.

Weapon durability was frustrating. There wasn't much to actually get out of the world beyond the intrinsic joy of exploration and sight seeing. imo a big part of it tho is that BoTW WAS a legit great game when it first released - but it is NOT a game meant to be replayed at all. and ToTK in a large part IS a replay of BoTW. plus BoTW was a gamechanger to a degree in 2017 - but it's not 2017 anymore. and except the (fun, sure) Zonai stuff it is still very much the same game from 2017, only bigger (and to some degree emptier and much grindier)

I havent fully played TOTK, I played around 10 hours ish? But it felt kinda underwhelming. I adored the initial tutorial part with the big sky island, but as soon as I got to hyrule it felt kinda monotonous and boring. It definitely improved on BOTW, but it felt very samey like I already experienced the game once. At first I was amazed by the depths but it got tedious quickly. I kinda enjoyed it but it wasnt as amazing as experiencing BOTW and I think its largely due to the re-used map and enemies and such. The shrines kinda feel improved upon but just like the first game is repetitive and too simplistic. I think for me personally I need to wait a lil longer to play it, maybe when the switch 2 comes out and TOTK gets a next gen patch? Anyways yeah great video btw.

I honestly really didn’t like BOTW or TOTK. I do realise that this is new direction that the series is heading in. Whilst that’s great for fans of the newer games, its sad that we probably won’t see a new game with a focused and linear experience. At this point, the best that more traditional Zelda fans can get would be a new 2d Zelda, which would be awesome.

I was about to say "what about the other 90 percent of the game don't you like?" And then you said "the core gameplay loop is seeing something cool in the distance, walking to the cool thing in the distance and not being rewarded." And then I understood why I love totk and you don't. I usually go on bike trips several times a week that can go on for 2 hours with no breaks, and I'm not rewarded for it, but I do it because I like the exploration and the difficulty of the exploration heightens the joy of it for me. So when I got botw, I loved it to bits because it made walking through the world fun for me due to the stamina system and the climbing and gliding mechanics. Totk reinforced that with ascend and zonai veichles and added more stuff to look at and go to in the main world and while the depths and sky islands are more boring in looks, they also have their own fun stuff to look at and walk to. It's not the fact that you don't enjoy this game that I find sad because nobody will enjoy every great game and that's fine, but I hope sometime in the future you can have more time to have that senseless fun.

I'm just starting to question if I can even consider sandbox games as "games". What I feel like a game should offer is a set experience, a challenge, with some reward at the end of it. Sandbox games don't really offer that but instead ask you to make your own fun in it,. Personally I can't get invested in a game for this reason and I have no idea why the Zelda series has adopted this area of game design. Yes, it does offer some handcrafted experiences, but if we're going by that, it's a terrible game; simplistic puzzles, terrible rewards, shallow dungeons, absolutely horrendous story with even worse writing and voice acting... it's objectively a bad (or at least deeply flawed) game, and it fails as a Zelda game. As a sandbox it's fine, but it's separate from the actual game and when its mechanics do come into play for the dungeons/p[uzzles, you're never rewarded for your creativity to think outside the box and typically break puzzles instead of solve them. This game felt like a waste of time for me, I dedicated myself to it and wasn't given anything in return. There were maybe tiny hints of fun and happiness throughout, but the vast majority of the time was pure boredom, and sometimes frustration. I can see why people do enjoy this game, especially as something to create silly things in for social media content, but this novelty won't last long and it won't be long until this game is forgotten about or replaced with something that does everything it tries to do better. Nintendo are killing Zelda by forgetting what's great about it, emphasising what isn't great about it, and then also turning it into something it's not. Hopefully an indie developer can one day bring back the magic of Zelda in a spiritual successor.

I have been a legend of Zelda fans since 1987, I loved breath of the wild and patiently waited 6 years, and I am disappointed. tears of the kingdom did not have its own identity, and was just more of the same. it boggles my mind that it took them longer to remix breath of the wild and add a few things then it did to create any other Zelda game. it worries me that this is the new format. I don't have time to randomly run into the same dragons and shoot them eight different times with a 10 minute reset timer on them to upgrade armor that is barely useful anyways. All this game was, was grinding. I love Zelda for the exploration and puzzle solving, I don't want to grind for 100 hours.

Probably 500+ hours and i didnt even get everything but that memory of playing with her all the time has made just how similar and samey TOTK seems, and its a hard game to play when im constantly being reminded of a woman who i loved for so long and still do in a lot of ways, who no longer loves me... and that hurts...a lot...well thats my story, maybe not the worst reason to dislike a game but there are too many things in TOTK that re open old scars for me to truly enjoy it...maybe one day, but not today...😢

Man I'm 26 now, and your video essay perfectly explains my relationship to pieces of media like TotK. It's a sad feeling, wanting to hold on to the nostalgia of the past and to try and relive the joyous experiences you had from before, even though you know you've already outgrown them. That's when you know it's time to move on and try something new. What I took from this is that it's sometimes better to 'let go' of something you love than to cling to to it forever. You end up expecting the same feeling from it every time, only to gradually resent that thing because it's ultimately not producing the same effects on you as it did in your first experience(s) with it.

I think ToTK is your outlet. But the feeling is there. Maturity and growth cannot come without giving up aimless happiness from the past. But time will pass whether we want it to or not. I felt this way playing OoT as adult link. I was around 8th grade at the time. The transition in Link’s story paralleled my own leaving childhood behind. I think that’s why so many ppl have deep connections to the Zelda games, regardless of which one you played during that time of life. The theme of coming of age and loss of innocence.
@lukemorgan25945 ай бұрын
I've 100% BotW on Normal and almost 100% on Master mode ( i got all the Koroks and shrines just couldnt beat the last sections of the Trials) When I first played the game there was a slight sense of awe. At the time everyone was raving about it and i got it for the Wii U and played for maybe 20 hours. Then I decided to get it on Switch for less pop in and slightly better framerate. With my 20 hours of experience on hand, I breezed through the Great Plateau and zoomed around opening up Towers and completing shrines with ease as I was familiar with the controls now and I like platformers so I would use my years of jumping experience to help skip certain sections the unintended way. The problem I found with the game was once I had restarted on the Switch, the progression system I had already figured out or lack of progression that is cost/worth effecient. Everything you do in BoTW even though it takes barely any time at all when you actually think about it, doesn't reward you with anything meaningful or comparable to the time spent. Hearts, in my opinion, in every Zelda game don't help with progression moving forward. They just allow the player to make more mistakes. The hearts dont make Links attacks stronger just make you take more hits. I know BotW and TotK arent RPGs but Hearts being tied to strength could have helped with the weapon durability issue. As you got more hearts, you would get "physically stronger" meaning your Soup Ladle can actually pack a punch. It would still break in a few hits but you could do more damage in that time. Korok seeds being tied to Inventory space is also just crazy. While collecting a Korok seed takes mere seconds when you actually think about it, you need multipe to upgrade a slot and it only upgrades one type of equipment (sword or shield not both). While I appreciatethat you dont need ALL 999 Korok seeds its something like half that number to fully upgrade your slots. AND THEN coolecting the other half doesnt reward you with anything meaningful for your efforts. Not having to complete the dungeons to beat the game sounds fun on paper but then it also highlights the fact that you DONT need to beat the dungeons to beat the game. Obviously the Powers you get from the dungeons are permament upgrades which is great and what should be expected from a Zelda Game but as stated earlier you dont need them to beat the game, they are utility abilities. After spending hundreds of hours doing the same thing twice in BotW and at the end of it all even on Master Mode I wasnt rewarded with anything that felt meaningful other than the experience of playing the game. To know that TotK is more of the same is such a shame and I've proven to myself that I dont enjoy the time spent versus the reward gained. I'm not saying these are bad games. A bad game is ET for the Atari. What I'm saying is that Zelda has always had this sense of awe, exploration and reward both in finding out how to get that item on the ledge or from permanent upgrades. The Awe disappears very quickly once you figure out the controls and reliance on stamina for movement. The Exploration loses it charm when you realise you are just micro managing stamina to climb up different hills or sprint across distances. The Reward for exploring and finding unique items is gone and you already know what to expect when you explore, breakable weapons, sellable ores, edibles/resources and Koroks. If you read all this, thanks for taking time out of your life to read some random person on YT comments. After choosing to spend time with BotW, I'm not going to waste it again playing TotK just like if you find my comment a waste if time then thats ok. Safety and peace be with you all.

I've been a Zelda fan since 1999 and I would say this game is boring and depressing. I'm a big fan of Breath of the Wild. Can't complain about that game. But this one. It's bad enough that they reuse the overworld. Seriously, for the most part it feels like the same game. With BotW, the overworld WAS the game. So if you're gonna give us that, of course people will call it glorified DLC. The first few hours were epic. But after a while it gets very tedious. You have to upgrade your gear so you have to go somewhere you already went in BotW. Except the enemies are arbitrarily stronger. All that sky stuff is a pretty small part of the game. And most of the time, if you use the rewind ability, you can't even find a rock to take you back there. The sidequests are mostly mundane. The depths are awesome at first but very boring after a few hours. So much work just going around and farming to upgrade your batteries so you can use your equipment for longer. Feels like a job that doesn't have the payoff. Not much incentive to do anything.

I understand why you might feel like growing up and being busier played a role in not enjoying Tears of the Kingdom as much, but I think there’s more to it. I’m nearly 40, with a packed life - I work full-time, have family responsibilities, and juggle hobbies like writing, hiking, and music. Despite that, I played Breath of the Wild for the first time recently and absolutely loved it. To me, the difference with Tears of the Kingdom isn’t about you growing up - it’s about the game itself. Nintendo reused the same world and mechanics, and while there were some new features, it didn’t feel as fresh or groundbreaking as Breath of the Wild did back in 2017. I think part of the reason it didn’t grab you is that you’d already experienced much of what made Breath of the Wild special. It’s not so much about your life changing but about the game not evolving enough to reignite that spark

Honestly I kind of agree. Botw came out for me when I was in my mid 20s, I was in a 5 year relationship that was close to ending and I just couldn’t see that. The last real fun thing we did was play botw together. I don’t think I would have beaten it if I didn’t have a partner to play it with. For pretty much the same reasons you mentioned in losing interest in totk. She more or less enjoyed the things I didn’t about the game and Vice versa. Fast forward to today, I’m in my 30s in a totally different job field, totally different living situation, have a house to take care of, I’m playing music out a lot more, I’m trying to be there for my family and parents cuz I really know how precious time is. And I just…I just can’t invest myself like I used to. I think the game is fine even though I hate the fuse mechanic and really don’t love the building mechanic (was never into Minecraft or halo forge kind of stuff), but honestly the rest seems cool. The games I play now are pretty casual. Like Mario kart 8, cod mobile, pokemmo (best mod ever), I try every new resident evil and only beat about every other one. Those games you can kind of jump in and jump out, and tears requires just a little more investment than im willing to give. And even though I’ve been thinking about this game on and off for years, I just…idk it just doesn’t click.

I'm a mom now, I do not have the time to invest 100s of hours into a game, therefore I only played the maingame and that was a huge let down. I would have much preferred a traditional Zelda, and just make the world smaller and more compact, fill it with side quests, but first and foremost concentrate on a good, engaging main quest. And that's it. Not this nonsensical running around for hours being interrupted every few steps eith something else. there is the possibility you wont be thinking of ''how much is this game worth my time'' forever and just vibe with a game in the future. i think having this phase that youre going through right now is actually pretty important in helping you mature. its okay to waste time once in awhile. life isnt about constantly optimizing. but if this is your path now, nice also totk kinda bad. i hate how it somehow found a way to have even more features that requires more menus. the entire game feels even more like a slog to go through. it added more content without streamlining the process into accessing any of it. tedious. so for me its not even that i dont have freetime, i have loads of it. its just that with each passing month i hate how a traditional 3d zelda puzzlebox game is taken from me since aonuma and his team is too busy making his sandboxes. i also genuinely thought totk wouldve just added everything i wanted in a zelda game, it didnt. and it took even longer to make than breath of the wild. i did enjoy the moment to moments, but the fact it was even longer to beat than breath of the wild with nothing ''really'' cool happening stings.

Slogging through TOTK. 10% is really fun. 90% feels like a part time job that I'm not getting paid for.

My biggest problem with the game, is that it acts like the first game didn't exist at times, mainly being the fact that the Champion abilities, and the Shieka Slate are removed in replacement the Sages and Arm. While the arm has some really cool stuff to mess around it, I can't help but miss the Slate, and the sages are worser than the Champions. I wish the Sages weren't considered a replacement for the Champions.

I played 60 hours of totk and then I just .... stopped. I was just bored. The monster types were getting so tedious and repetitive, and the rewards were mediocre. All I was getting were boring food items or crappy weapons and sometimes armor I didn't even like. And then I was simply overwhelmed by those "find all xyz" type quests (like the well one). Exploration didn't feel as rewarding anymore after botw.

I put 485 hours on TOTK for 6 months compare to Breathe of the wild that took 475 hours with over 5 to 6 years As an age of 20 TOTK was absolutely amazing omg. I still can't stop playing it. Plus Link's new Arcahic look is fireeeee

I loved BOTW and I can even play it now. I only spent like 150 hours in it. beat it... probably hasnt even discovered everything yet... but TOKT creation system just feels like a chore, I spent so much time to beat a puzzle where in BOTW its much faster as you dont need to spend so much time building bullshit or looking for tools for building that bullshit... TOTK feels like going to work it aint fun at all
