I heard someone call their legal name their “government nickname”, which almost sounds more accurate in that culture lol I stayed with my abuser for 6 years. When I finally left and had to explain to my clients why I wouldn’t be able to work with them anymore, every single woman knew of someone or herself was a survivor of domestic abuse. You can be Bangladeshi but not Bengali ( like our ethnic people such as chakma , garo , etc ) . You can also be Bengali but not Bangladeshi ( like indian Bengali people ) . Even though most of the Bangladeshi people are Bengali doesn't mean that these two terms are interchangeable.

Im Bangladeshi too! Im 12 and my name is Aapsara but I like to go by Anura. Every time im at school, kids make fun of my name and teachers always mispronounce it. I even had a teacher who never said my name right even though i told her how to several times. (In middle school)

I have a simmilar problem. I’m also from Bangladesh too! My name is Asmita, but my Daak naam is Shraddha. I was shocked that schools to call me Asmita, but while I was in kindergarten I kept asking my mom, why aren’t they saying Shraddha? But my mom said that she picked it or it fit really well. Then one day there was a new girl with the same Daak Naam as me, but as her actual name, Shraddha. But when people call her, I’m like, yeah! What do you want? But then they don’t know that my Daak naam is Shraddha because us Bangladeshi people have families calling us by our Daak Naam, not our actual name. And everyone in my family and extended family calls me Shraddha so that’s why I get confused about that. But I’m glad she is not in my class lol because it would be more embarrassing and confusing for me lol! But it’s so cool that I’m not the only one!

Names are a magnitude of were we come from especially if you are of color, I could never bare the thought of changing my ethnic name just to make someone comfortable. I love my unique name!

I married a Bengali and when I learned about Daak naam I made sure our children only had the one name. It sounds confusing to have a legal name and then another name to be called by. Nicknames are completely different. Also why choose such a beautiful name if you’re going to call your child something else anyway?
