Hi Chris, love your channel. Like everyone else, been a boater all my life. Diesel boats for a reasonable price are somewhat rare in the pacific northwest, but I like diesel. My first afordable diesel boat I built myself. Purchased a 22' Thunderbird Trihull, with an Inboard outboard. Fiberglass’ ed up the hole, used my dad’s Tow truck to pull a 6.2 diesel from a truck. Bought a pair of used marine chevy 305 /5L V8's with velvet drives. The running one was sold for what the pair cost. Bought some 6.2L diesel manifolds from Osco. Made my own risers, used all the other marine components from the bad 305 including the bell housing and Velvet drive. Had to cut a little slot in the bellhousing for the starter. Did some basic math, mounted a shaft strut, shaft and Propeller. Paid a guy that had access to a crane truck $75 to lift the engine into the boat in my Ballard house, back yard. Launched the thing, using it to commercial fish Crayfish in Lake Washington for 2 years. Sold a lot of Crayfish to Jakes in Portland. Did the same thing again to a 1985 25' Bayliner flybridge in 2007, only this time, used the Volvo outdrive. I've also owned and like gas boats and sailboats. Sailed our 44' Hardin Voyager with the family, around Vancouver island, twice. You are going to find out what some people have been telling you about torque of gas and diesel is true. The numbers just don't do the facts justice. That said, it doesn’t matter, you are spot on with your logic. When people talk about boat fuel economy. Does not make sense to measure boat economy by mpg. Your gas boat is going to get less than 1 mile per gallon, if you slow down for better mileage, it will steer like shit. When the wife and I married 35 years ago we lived and Honeymoon on a 31' Fairliner. Had twin Chrysler V8's, 1 mpg. Boat fuel economy for 90% of us should be measured by fuel used per season. Most people spend more money on a month or two's moorage then they do a seasons fuel!!!!! Unless those engines from Texas are putting out some huge HP, probably won’t see 50 mph. Look at similarly sized Tiara’s, Stamas, Pursuits and the like to compare.

Mate, I don't where to start, however you scare the sh1t out of me and most other folks that have some idea on marine propulsion systems. Your gas engines will work somewhat if you put the higest ratio gear box that you can put behind the ew engines and a couple of egg beaters for props. When repowering a boat look at the current shaft power and speed, the prop does not give a sh1t if you have a vt903 or a flux capacitor turning it, it just needs x amount of power at x amount of rpm You have 450hp at 2800 rpm, let's say you have a 2:1 ratio , this gives you shaft speed of 1400rpm. You need to try and get this shaft speed with the new engine and transmission combo.. You will struggle finding the ratio so you will more than likely need new props. IMO A couple of second hand 6cta 450hp Cummins would of been the cheapest fix However I for one want to see you give this a crack as it is something I don't think I will ever see again Good luck

He always says $80,000 to stay diesel but I don't know where he is getting those figures. He only needs 1 903 and you could find a good reco one for $30k. Probably less because, you know, America. It would be a slip in affair and he could be off the dry dock. DeBoss offered him a reconditioned pair and it would have been a sight less than 80k. Plus DBG engines would likely by high torque at around 1200 instead of the claimed 800 his current engines have. Double his LS swap anyway.

I've worked in the marine industry as an engineer for a while and it's interesting to watch your project so well done on being ambitious and trying things, interested to see what happens but it's still definitely unconventional how you're doing things. Italian yachts are notorious for bad access to the engines, one vessel I've worked on you needed to remove part of the exhaust to clean the sea strainers (it was a big boat). For someone doing small day trips or weekend use like you (it seems) it's possibly not such a big deal BUT if you consider doing a few days at sea (like 6 weeks crossing across an ocean on a sailboat) or something like that Diesels are still the conventional way for vessels, many small sailboats are using old tractor engines, for the type of boat you have your prices you got sound like a lot. Yanmar engines are one of my favorites, john deere also pretty good if they are properly maintained. I urge you to take the time to get a maintenance guide or book for boats firstly and engines separately to get a better idea of what maintenance you need to do. if you're serious about everything, there is a lot you have to do to look after that engine, it's not like a car that you just start and go. In Marine engines your cooling system is imperative, In fact we check for cooling each time we start any engine. One thing you do on bigger engines is to send off the oil samples each time you do a change, they tell you exactly what is in there and if you see high sodium or something you know seawater is coming in from a seal etc. No guessing that way, it also tells you if your engine is degrading or any major signs of wear. Some ideas to make your life easier with your current situation, try install a oil suction system that attaches to your sump so you just turn a valve and pump out the oil if access is still an issue, most bigger boats have that and sounds like something you might like. Try visually inspect the diesel tanks you've got, they'll need to be cleaned too but now that the boat is apart that might be a good idea. And don't forget anodes on your new engine somewhere, don't know where you will fit those but most marine engines have anodes somewhere that are periodically changed relative to the hours, a lot of other things I could get into. Because the boat is out the water, look for other routine maintenance that has to be done out the water while it's out. Can't see a lot of stuff on camera but anodes need to be replaced every now and then, the antifouling as well if you not planning on hauling out again. Inspect your through hull fittings especially as they eventually fail on boats that age often if they are brass or something like that, you don't want old dodgy fittings around. Good luck :D

A lot of people outside the boat world don't really understand marine centric brands. Yanmar is probably an unknown brand to the B is for build crew while Cummins is well known and this is probably why they didn't price them and their only alternative pricing was Volvo. From my perspective there are advantages to Cummins and Volvo engines for very big boats but this boat is not that. A 440mhp class Yanmar with the right transmission and prop setup would probably push that boat just fine. But it's definitely a weaker option on paper, and the math required to figure that out sucks for people who are unfamiliar.
@butwhatdoiknow51154 жыл бұрын
@@badinternetporn4704 fair Comment. familiarity and experience is definitely a big part of your decisions. It ultimately depends on the vessel and intention of the owner, go Google a boat called the world is not enough if you Want to see something overboard. I've been on a 30 meter vessel that uses more litres per hour but roughly same power as a 75 meter vessel, a much smaller engine would have been fine on the smaller boat. The sizes sound like a small difference but one boat was Fibre glass and one aluminum, many decks and gross tonnage difference of about 1000 GT. The 30 meter had 3 turbos per engine and higher rpm mtu engine but the bigger one had bigger cat engines at lower rpm. So it's like you say sometimes the math and that is another story, boats can be odd in that way!

When the bow of your boat bobs up and down it's called Porpoising. The issue you're going to have with less weight in the stern, and more weight in the front, you might not be able to lift the nose high enough because you've removed thousands of pounds out of the stern. Trim tabs will help you keep the nose DOWN but there's nothing to lift the bow UP. Then you'll have the problem of puttering: your nose will want to plow into waves since the boat is now unbalanced.
@matthewjohnson93614 жыл бұрын

@buildandrebuild4 жыл бұрын
Force out of the props will bring the bow upward, if he has dual ~1000hp engines pushing a lightened boat, that bow is going to pop up pretty easily I think. If he put a pair of 300hp small blocks, I could see it being an issue, but if he revs two modern big blocks to 6000, I think he is going to have to trim it down quick. If I'm wrong, some auxillary fuel tanks in back would help with ballast.
@muskokamike1274 жыл бұрын
@@buildandrebuild Maybe, but remember: the bow is "heavier" now without the ballast of those diesels in the back. The boat is going to rest bow down and plow through waves. Think of it this way: instead of having 8 people in the stern, he's now got 8 people on the bow. The ballast of the diesels would automatically have a bow up attitude. As I mentioned, he could always add another 100 gallon fuel tank and keep it full (he's going to need it with those engines lol)

Thank you for taking the time to explain your thought process. I was worried that you were going to ruin the resale value of that boat but at the end of the day, it is your boat. Now that I have heard which direction you are going and why, I look forward to the transformation of this boat. I owned a 30 foot power boat with 2 - 350 cubic inch mercury Magnum (GM) engines that were fuel injected. They used 1 gallon of gas every minute at full throttle. Your boat is much heavier and longer than my Formula 292 Fast tech was which makes me wonder how much gas these 2 - LS engines will burn under power. I do agree with what you said about the cost of fuel. It is not the most expensive part of owning a boat that size and you won't be running around W.O.T. all the time. With that said fuel cost is not a huge factor in your case. I give you a lot of credit for taking the time to explain your choice and how you got to that choice. When I write a comment I usually don’t expect that the creator is actually reading them. Of course it’s even better when this happens but usually comments are just a good way to express own thoughts on a topic or give feedback to the whole viewership. I think comments or the possibility to interact with the medium you’re consuming as a viewer and with other viewers is a big part of the KZbin experience. Yes, the comments can get really weird or off-topic or toxic in the worst case. As a creator you have to learn how to either interact with the positive comments, e.g. “like” the first constructive comments after uploading or just ignore them all together. Some creators sadly just disable comments all together because the burden of negative feedback was just overwhelming for them. You do awesome projects and you document them for us to participate in a passive way. Do what you like and think. No need to justify or fight back. Just because everyone has a voice doesn’t mean they all have to be heard. Having somebody moderate your comments on hot topics might also help to keep the community positive and constructive. The way to manage the balance between torque and power is by changhing angular velocity. Tis is done through changing gears. An example is a bike which has diferent gear ratios for going fast or for going uphill. For going fast there are big to small gears in order to increase angular velocity on the smaller gears. For going uphill there are small to big gears in order to decrease angular velocity in the bigger gear. At the same time this allows rpm (angular velocity) of the small gear to increase and transfer more of the power into less rotations of the big gear but been able to transfer the engine ouput into slower rotations traduced in what's called torque.

Yeah that's what I said too.....with gas engines, he's going to need it lol. My single 454 could blow through $500 in gas per day if I wasn't careful. You'd be surprised what adding 2 people onboard did to the fuel economy. I had to laugh out loud when he said "I did 150 hours" so in my boat with a single 454 big block I'd burn through 25 gpg at 24 ish mph. So do the math: 150 hrs x 25 gallons = 3,750 gallons. At the time, marine fuel was $4.00 per gallon = $15000.00. It was ALMOST worthwhile for me to pay $500 to have the boat hauled out and trailered to a land gas station because at the time, land gas was $2.75 a gallon. That was the sweet spot. If I pumped it up to 30 or 35 mph? I'd suck back 50 gph. I looked at an emo fittipaldi scarab who burned through 300 gph at full speed (70 mph +/-) it had twin 454's.

Let’s be honest here, Cummins engines are built like tanks and that’s a fact, the specific engine in your boat however could have it’s flaws as it’s an older engine. Diesels are used in many military applications for a reason. My only concern is the torque curve of the LS motors, you might have to ride the engines at a high rpm to reach the necessary torque in rough seas (even with propeller and gearing adjustments). Then there is basic stuff like boat stability/weight reduction and rebalancing, the engines ability to resist corrosion, cooling and gasoline fume accumulation. Sounds like you have that covered, in all I hope it works out for you, it’s a tough debate to be honest and I’m not surprised so many people are misinformed or attacking you. Good luck man 👍🏻

I find your channels good to watch, I’m following your boat build now as I live on my boat, and have run into some of the same things but because of money went different directions. Don’t let the haters get you down. Get selective hearing , it will be fine. Different ideas and answers are good , but there are to many out there that like to make the waves,. Keep them coming.

I still say that rather than trying to sell the engines for slightly more than scrap metal worth that you give one each to Cleetus McFarland and Westen Champlin. Westen loves Cummins engines as he just put one in a Mustang and well Cleetus we all know he'd come up with something absolutely insane to do with it lol

Come on man, that hater shit is so old. The Navy, Coast Guard, and lifelong naval mechanics talking about why the LS swap is a really poor choice, and how much better the diesels are, aren't haters. They're people with decades of very specific experience that are trying to give good information (that's falling on deaf ears). Totally understandable why they're frustrated. Sure, at the end of the day it's his build and his money, but people that have spent their lives at sea or working in the marine sector know what they're talking about, and know the price of failure at sea. No one wants to see him fail, or worse, get himself or others hurt.

@@TheM750 agree 100%. I’ve heard of many people upgrading from gas to diesel in boats...but I’ve NEVER heard of anyone going from diesel to gas. Sure the boat will run and maybe ok but what he’s doing is destroying the reliability and resale value of this boat. It’s the wrong type of hull for this project... he’s gonna learn the hard and expensive way. Riva is a premium brand but this idiot just f’d that up.

My company specializes in swapping the late model GM LS & LT engines into boats. We just purchased two different SeaRay models, a 290 SunSport SLX and a 33-foot Sea Ray Sundancer... both were powered by 350ci engines producing less than 250hp a piece. These boats are both getting LT direct injected L97 engines, fully marinized and making in excess of 450hp while sipping a third of the fuel. The huge benefit is removing over 900-pounds of weight out of the stern of the boat. This weight removal is a massive benefit on adding an additional auxiliary fuel tank. Having an Aux tank is beneficial to increase range and ballast. I will recommend that you switch to the LT VVT engines as we have so you can phase the cam to move the torque range much lower and once on plane, change the cam phase to increase cruise torque. You will see this is SO BENEFICIAL to moving your massive Italian Princess! LMK if we can help in any way collaborate with your BUILD.

Such a considered, polite and thorough response. Nice work. I wonder if many of your audience have considered what fuels all the ski and wakeboarding boats out there. That's right folks, Unleaded (gas). For wakeboarding, these are fairly small boats (towable without a permit) with big engines. For wakeboarders, they also carry a LOT of water ballast to generate a bigger wake. Not efficient at all. But also perfectly fit for purpose. The new project sounds like a lot of fun and having Texas Speed onboard should make it a riot!

Hey Chris, you are a great man with great video's and projects. The ls (any petrol engine) swap is indeed controversial, but the extra information on why uou are going to do it is quit critical to understand the choice, because we do care. This is not any gootalking for toxic people in the comments, but some more info was handy.

Man, this is going to get buried. Who cares what people think - people watch and enjoy it. Focus on that! Question: have you thought about a Hamilton Jet instead of the propeller propulsion system? Far superior for higher speeds and better manoeuvrability. Anyway, keep the content what ever you decide. I love to learn and I learn more on this channel then any other I follow! Peace!

I have a question. is it possible to put a gearbox like a car gearbox with first gear second gear third gear in a boat? or it is just one gear and goes up and down by rpm? if it is possible to put the car-like gearbox in the boat I think it will be one of the fastest yachts you can make, also just something popped into my mind, make the boat more nose heavy so you apply the trim tabs earlier like close to your high speed, so when you are close to high speed, the boat nose gets out of the water as much as possible to have less resistance also you don't need your trim tabs to apply so make less drag if it does make sense

Hey, whats the possibility of adding a third engine in the middle? A tesla motor and the batteries will get you the weight loss figured out
@matthewholzmueller62924 жыл бұрын
That's a helluva idea, not only that when the battery dies, water running past the propeller can regenerate power back into the system, he can use it like a power boost or a trolling motor! Love the idea!
@KiRiTO729874 жыл бұрын
It would require taking the boat to a marine specalist and considering the fact that he doesnt want to get proper marine diesel engines for this because of how expensive they are i doubt he would want to pay to have his hull modified.
