My reason for wanting a G23 is different. I do like the extra knockdown power of 40 S&W. However, many people pass on good 40 S&W Glock deals, not realizing that one can purchase a conversion barrel for any of the standard sized Glocks for anywhere from $70 to $150. My experience shows that with these conversion barrels one can shoot 9mm all day with the Glock 40 S&W with the existing springs merely by changing the barrel. This gives one incredible versatility, especially with a potential SHTF gun that can shoot both 9 and 40! I have a few 9mm mags that I've used for this purpose, however, as a test I shot a couple of magazines of 9mm through my 40 cal magazines (just to confirm it works). I never had one feed issue.

The first Glock I bought was a Glock 23. Some years later I bought a Glock 19. I have about 25 - 30 magazines for each. I stumbled on a Galco IWB holster that fits both guns. I carry the Glock 23 because the .40 S&W is about 30 - 35% stronger than the 9mm for the same sized gun. Most of what you said is why I went 40 Cal in the first place. Slower velocity, more expansion and energy transfer, no over penetration. Keep those neighbors and kids safe. Another thing I’ve noticed is that during ammo scares, I was still able to find the 40 Cal for sale.
@Lift_these
@Lift_these 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with steemer…. I have done a lot of research on this matter myself. The 40 is a better round. I hear people winning about recoil… well I respect people that may be ill or have injuries but, other than that; there are a lot of wooses out here. The recoil is slightly more than a 9. 9mm can be snappy also depending on the ammo. 40 can penetrate like a 9 but, hit like a 45. All I shoot is 9, 40 and 10mm. I had the 45 but, when I studied it ballistically it was poor at penetration. Now you can find some 45 that can penetrate but, it’s not found consistently. However, a regular box of 40 does penetrate better and still have a higher velocity than 45. In other words you will find more 40 ammo that have better penetration and foot pounds of energy on impact. There is a chart that compare one shot stops with all pistol calibers by law enforcement and two rounds the police used that accomplished that was 357 magnum first, then 40. So 40 for me is better than 9 and 45. Even though I have a G45 ( 9mm), I lean more towards my G23 (40). I even got a sub2000 in 40, that use the Glock 22 round Mags…🤪

Agreed. I've been shooting .40 for over 25 years. No recoil problem. I once saw/heard someone shooting a high recoil/blast pistol. I asked ".40?". He said "No, 9mm +P". Enough said. You can shoot 9mm with conversion barrel. 40sw can rival 45 acp in knockdown power with 200 grain 40sw. Also you can shoot 357 sig. 357 sig rivals 10 mm in penetration. Underwood has 357 sig ammo that has near rifle velocities at 2100 fp. I am pretty sure that can penetrate a grizzly bear's skull.

Yeah absolutely, everything you said was right on the mark, but I feel you left out one of the most important reasons to always go with a G-23 over a 19 regardless of what ammo you tend to like better. That is the fact that, with a conversion barrel and 9mm mags, you can convert a G-23 into a gun that shoots 9mm. If you buy a G-19 that's all you have regardless of what ammo you can find, what's on sale to plink with, or what new rounds come out for one gun or the other. If you have a G-23 you have much more versatility in having the ability to feed your pistol anything on the shelf for either of those two calibers. I'm a prepper, so versatility in the platform I chose is important.

Good video. I love my 23 and 19’s. If I could only choose one for home defense, I’d go Glock 19…. any generation. 9mm Ammo is cheaper to train; the wife and daughter like the 9mm caliber better than .40; 9mm I get faster follow up shots with better accuracy; muzzle flash is less with 9mm; rapport with 9mm is LESS than .40 and that’s important indoors without hearing protection. As for generation, I love them all with Gen 3 and 5 being my favorites. However I prefer the Gen5 Glock 23 over the Gen3. Reason being is the slide on the Glock 23 gen5 is slightly thicker than gen3. That’s because Glock finally acknowledged that they needed to make the gen5 23 thicker due to failures at around 35,000-40,000 rounds of 40 through previous generations.

Thank you for your video. I wrestled with this myself . This is where I personally landed: I would buy the Glock 23 if I could only have one pistol. It is the best balance of reliability, stopping two-legged and big four-legged critters (black bear, wild boar, etc), size, capacity, and shootability. However, I'm not limited to one pistol so I went with the Glock 19 for two-legged critters and the Glock 20 for four-legged critters (I also regularly carry this in the colder months). Both my Glock 19 and 20 have the same sights, light, and trigger so there is minimal difference between the two. I've been impressed with how well the Glock 20 manages recoil even with full power Buffalo Bore and Underwood loads. If I can make one recommendation to prevent overpenetration and devastate your target it would be to use a 16" 5.56/.223 and load it with Hornady V Max 40gr rounds. Crazy destruction at home defense ranges and minimal chance of overpenetration. Also, this round is going so fast and has such a thin jacket that it fragments after going through two sheets of dry wall. This is my home defense setup. Test it for yourself and you won't be disappointed.

It did come down to it for me personally, I was at the gun store and I was looking for a Glock. I saw a 19, a 23 and a 32. The 32 appealed to me for a little bit until I got the run down on it. Ammo is much more expensive, it holds less than being a 357 sig and it's really just a Gucci round. So I narrowed it down to the 19 and 23. I felt both were good options but it being my very first gun, 9mm seemed the most beginner friendly and least expensive of all and the fact that the Navy SEALs replaced the Sig Sauer P226 with the Glock 19 some years ago. Put that all together, I decided to go with the 19 to start.

Realize also that a G23 or a G32 can use replacement barrels to shoot 9mm. You can get a 40 barrel and a 9mm barrel and be able to shoot all three calibers. Same with a G23. You can also get a 22lr conversion kit and be able to use four different calibers. Talk about versatility.

The 40 sw is much more versatile than the 9mm , 45 acp and 10 mm. It is in that goldilocks region of power, capacity, price, availability, and the amount of effective applications since it goes from 100 grain all the way up to 200 grain woods defense hardcasts which rivals 200 grain 45 acp +p ammo. Federal has that 205 grain 850 fps , 45 acp esque knockdown power. The 150 grain to 165 grain territory rivals 357 magnum and 10 mm of the same grain size , while the 135 grain 40 sw is comparable to the 125 grain 357 sig in terms of velocity and power. You get all this for a caliber that fits in 9 mm gun frames, the second highest in capacity after the 9mm, second cheapest, more available than 9 mm during a shortage, more powerful than the 9mm with/without over penetration, and WAY more versatile out of all semi-auto calibers. 40 sw can penetrate windshields if need to where as 9 mm cant do that as well, just ask LEOs. 40sw has subsonic ammo that can be suppressed also if you need to. Hot 40sw can rival 10 mm and 357 magnum, to get the job done for LEOs, and woods defense, while also having higher expansion less over penetrating options with knockdown power close to the 45 acp. Honestly I think 40 sw is a solid 7 to 8 in every category you would rate it. Just the most balanced caliber to exist.

@@Lift_these Yes if you focus only on power. Hot loaded 40 sw can get pretty close to factory load 10 mm in the 155 to 165 grain range. Unless I am using 10 mm as a dedicated bear caliber, 40 sw trumps the 10 mm in capacity, price, availability, and gun size ( 40 sw fits in 9 mm size handguns, part of the reason 40sw was born.). I came to the same conclusion about less over penetration with a .40 30 years ago (1994) and never changed my mind. It's also an advantage of hollow points. But honestly the training and skills are going to mean far much more than the caliber of the gun. Neither glock is a bad choice.

I have 3rd gen 22 and a 4th gen 17. Both are great guns, I would feel adequate with either one. I have a .357 sig barrel for the 22. I started using the 22 as my defensive handgun but have switched to the 17 as of late. I have a larger supply of 9mm ammo for practice and it has been easier to purchase. At times 9mm was the only handgun cartridge I could find. Also, as I have gotten older the arthritis in my hand and shoulder have gotten worse. I just don't want to put 2 or 3 boxes of .40 down range for training. The 9mm in the gen 4 doesn't leave me stiff and sore for a couple of days after. I have thought about getting a .45 Glock, the recoil isn't as sharp with .45 as it is with .40. I can shoot my 1911 and not have the issues I have with .40.

Great points. I went for the Gen 3 G23 and as an added benefit due the the larger OD of the 40 S&W barrel, I convert to 9MM. After some research, I learned that the same frame is used in the 357 Sig Glock which as I recall is the G31 so I swap that in occasionally . Also I have the 22LR conversion slide that works with the G19 as well and allows for inexpensive ammo to practice with my home defense platform. Finally the Mech-Tech CCU carbine conversion unit is a goof at the rifle range. I can't think of a more versatile firearm. Since 2011, my G23 lives in a holster fastened to the bed post with velcro. Total cost of the gun and all the conversion hardware mentioned including a TLR-3, approximately $1,700

I chose the 23 because with a drop in replacement barrel and 9mm mag the 23 fires both calibers, whereas the 19 requires a full slide assembly (and barrel) to fire 40 s&w. Why settle for just one caliber? My drop in threaded 9mm barrel for the 23 was $42. That was on sale but you can get them for $150 max. Buying a full slide for the 19 frame, you might as well buy a whole new pistol.

Glock 22 has been my woods and nightstand pistol for years. I've killed too many hogs with 9mm and .40s&w to be draw into the 9mm is better debate with people. The .40s&w simply kills stuff faster because it has more energy, and does more damage. 9mm isn't weak but it's the entry level for good and ammunition can make a huge choice. Even a sub optimal .40s&w choice however is better than good 9mm choice when it comes to ammo effectiveness. I do carry 9mm when I was sub compact up town carry but the only ammo I carry is Federal 115gr +p+ it's notorious and puts out over 500ft/lbs of energy which is significant. Many PD's carried it for years back when .40s&w was king and the 155gr silvertips ruled the roost. Then came the FBI and their bullet standards and everything went sideways.

A lot of the people I’ve talked to - who actually use their firearms for things other than paper punching - express that same sentiment. Don’t know what it is exactly, but .40 S&W does indeed seem to drop things quicker. Perhaps it’s a mental thing, but I sincerely do believe that it exists. Will take the one with more lumens, even though I never had issues with either weapon lights. What I don't like about Glock Gen 1-4 is the partially unsupported chamber with higher pressure ammunition like the 40 S&W, 10 mm and 357 Sig , Gen 5 suppose to use a new barrel and haven't tried one out. I have a 17 and a 19x (43x don’t count cuz it’s single stack) but I wanna pick up a 26 and 19 eventually that I would have so many mags for it just makes sense for people on a budget who wants to buy bulk of 9 instead of a bunch of different calibers

I got a 23 for one reason and one reason only. You can shoot three different calibers in "one gun". Simple barrel, mag, and ejector change and it becomes 19, or 32. No brainer. Why would you limit your options?? I carry everyday in 9mm. Why?? Three reasons, capacity, price of ammo, and the fact that I can do more quality work with 9mm versus 40 cal or 357sig. I like having the option of 40cal, and 357 sig if that's all the ammo that is available or shooting it for fun. Just because you're acurate at the range with 40 cal doesn't mean shit when your target is moving and shooting back and your veins are flowing with adrenaline.

I got a Glock 23 w/ Sig 357 barrel and a Glock 45 MOS w/ a Holosun. Since uppers and lowers are all compatible (all gen 5) I can choose 9mm, 357 Sig, or 40 cal with either compact or full-size grip, with red dot or iron night sights. It's like having 12 gun options for the price of two (plus barrel and mags for 357 Sig). Might throw a threaded barrel into the mix for even more versatility. I've heard the 40 cal extractor works fine for 9mm, but not sure if the reverse is true...so worst case, might need to spend a little extra time changing parts to get the exact gun you want running reliably. I'll be doing a video on this soon.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass (maybe a lazy ass...) but are those FBI stats based on ballistic gels or physical obstacles? Only reason I'm asking is that drywall (Nevermind studs for this point) doesn't behave like human flesh when penetrated by bullets... Is it possible that .40 cal or 9mm doesn't matter if were talking about rounds going through walls n shit? Outside the bazar chance that you pump a perp with whatevs, and it even goes through them fast enough and weird enough to kill a loved one, I just don't think that the round is really going to matter as far as mitigating the any risk of going through physical obstacles... However, I do think that accuracy and good decision making are of paramount importance so maybe that is where the lower recoil and greater shot placement confidence of the Glock 19 might have an advantage?...Me my primary go to home defense for the very same concerns you mentioned here are a Mossberg 500 pump with mix of birdshot and double 00 buck at the bottom of the mag tube in case shit really goes south....I do have a Glock 19 on standby as a back up...idunno just my miles..
