I don’t get why ppl ask nurses why aren’t they a doctor. I get it a lot and I don’t know how to nicely answer them. That’s like going up to a primary doctor and saying “ew why aren’t you a brain surgeon?” Or whatever. Like ??????? Not everyone wants to be a doctor??? Some people become lawyers, do you ask them why they didn’t become a doctor too? I’d never ask a nurse-aide why they didn’t become a nurse because that’s so rude and maybe they just didn’t want to do that path

I'm so glad I came across this video! I'm going to be a senior in high school this year and for probably 7 years now I've wanted to be a doctor. I've got the brain for it as I'm also in the top 1% in my class, and I was thinking about going into Obstetrics and Gynecology!! There's some freaky similarities for ya! Anyways, the life of a NP or Midwife seems much more of what I had thought a doctor would do. I want to have more time for a family, less schooling (and debt), and most importantly be the person that is hands on and there for a patient in any situation. Thanks so much for the video and the advice!

Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be a doctor. I’ve been set on being a doctor. But I really want to have kids not that late. Not that a doctor can’t but it would be very hard being in school that long and supporting a child. If that makes any sense. I’ve thought about nursing and it seems great. @@afm398 what you're saying is absolutely false. You still have to take all the pre med pre reqs to enter med school so a non science major will be just fine in terms of the MCAT. Nursing shouldn't be compared to med school. They are two very different paths. Nurses work closer to the patients, and it does take less time to become a nurse, which is good. But then the years and work it takes to become a Doctor allows one to learn so much more, and never stop learning. That is why they're the ones writing prescriptions. And doctors can have families too, they're not busy 100% of their lives. And pre-med leads to a wide range of careers. There are also numerous types of doctors.
@yepyepIlove6 жыл бұрын
Soccer Lover Just a note, nurses never stop learning either and constantly have to get “re-educated” because of updates in surgeries, medications, medical options, best practice at the bedside, etc.

I'm not sure if I could handle being at the patients' bedside all day like nurses do because I can be somewhat introverted and get a little tired of being with people. I love the idea of nursing so much but I might go the medical route because of my personality.

There are certain specialties/floors where nurses do not do as much talking to patients... Think trauma, ICU, OR, etc. and if you are a floor nurse but work at night, it is a lot quieter because half your patients are sleeping or at least trying to sleep! Also less staff you have to interact with

I mean, biologically speaking, a lot of females (including me) have maternal instincts and want the time to be there with our eventual kids. While I'm passionate about the medical field, family > career. I don't know why anyone (including men) would chose otherwise. Doctors have much less free time, and for people who want to have families, it's just not as rewarding as being a nurse. I'm not being mysogonistic, there is nothing wrong with prioritizing family, and quite honestly, I think it's the much better choice.

Nurse practitioners are not even close to being a doctor neither are PA's the level of education is significantly different including the actual title of a doctor. I'm biased being a Neonatologist myself but I definitely know the HUGE differences between nurses, different types of doctors, PA's, and NP's. NP's and PA's can only diagnose acute illnesses or sicknesses. But I strongly appreciate every single person who works in a hospital regardless if you are a doctor, nurse, maid ,etc.
@jasonyoung45297 жыл бұрын
Well when it comes to primary care, NP's are able to practice alone in many states. Also the salaries are only slightly below that of primary care physicians. I think if you were really sold on being a primary care physician and NP position might make more sense in terms of less education and less student loans

@AshleyLorenaAdkins8 жыл бұрын
You will just go to nursing school, and once you graduate you can apply to any speciality. They do not always take new grad nurses in the NICU, but it is not impossible. Most of the time they prefer that you get a little experience elsewhere before going straight to the NICU since you would be working with such a vulnerable population.

You can apply straight to a NICU after you get your degree as a nurse. It's harder to get into a NICU as a new grad than it is to something like med/surg, but it's possible. If you do your senior preceptorship in a nursery or NICU then that could give you a leg up into getting a NICU job. Your preceptorship might also offer you a job if they have any spots open and you do well.

I would like to know what I should do. The college I will be going to offers a two year degree to become a RN (which is an associates degree) then I will have to transfer to a different school to get my BSN. Some of the people I have heard from say it's just a dollar difference but anything specialized requires at least a BSN. Thus, getting my BSN I will have more job opportunities. I would like to try different fields in Nursing like surgery, traveling nurse, and many other fields. Should I work with a RN degree while I'm getting my BSN? Should I just quit after I get my RN degree? I confused as to what I should do. Any advice would be much appreciated! 😄
@AdrianaMartinez-zq7bw7 жыл бұрын
Ladyhawk1094 getting your RN in an associates degree works just as well as a BSN... you will get paid the same... and you can still go into any specialty as long as the hospital or place has a need for it. I'm a new grad RN and (as well as many as my colleagues) am now in a specialty... many of us were able to quickly get into the OR, NICU, ICU, and others (to name a few) all while being new ADN-RNs... so do whatever works best for you and then just keep going as time permits. Best of luck!
@Ladyhawk-ys3qy7 жыл бұрын
Where I live there are two hospitals that pretty much have the pay pinned down. A new RN can expect $17/HR. However, many of the specialized units prefer at LEAST a BSN. 😐 I think I will get my RN then decide later if I want to get my BSN. Thanks for the input! I'm excited to learn about Nursing!

I would absolutely love to work in the medical field, that’s the path I am taking for my future. I am currently a sophomore in high school and I’ve been wanting to work in the medical field since junior high school. There’s a few people who think I won’t become one due to the fact that I am terribly afraid of vomit. I absolutely hate when someone vomits, I hate the idea of it and I panic whenever someone feels like throwing up. Do you have any advice or tips on that for me? :-(

Lmao i dont think anyone likes vomit. But no, that will not hinder you in any way in becoming a doctor. As a doctor youll be doing most of the prescribing and describing (intellectual work) in dealing with patients, not the physical vomit cleaning stuff. Thats for the janitors.

Your logic backing your decision is so similar to mine. I needed a career and a fall back not just a pathway. however I still have not ruled out becoming a doctor one day as I still am fascinated and highly excited by solving medical problems. I have and always will like the solving puzzles aspect of diagnostics and if I had a dollar for every time someone through out high school and nursing school has told me that I should become a doctor one day, or that I tend to think like a doctor i would have already paid my tuition fees and the some. Also the field of nurse practitioner on Australia is not even close to the level the US is. We have gone about developing that role for completely different reasons and in a completely different way. in addition we do have a graduate pathway for wanna be doctors who have already completed a bachelors degree. it doesn't have to be science based or health based. it can be anything. I still may try to get into medical school one day but because its the clinical deduction that I love, but for me now, nursing is not only a fantastic pathway, but also a fulfilling career. Thank you for making this video, good on you and best of luck with everything. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one in the world who has had these ideas.

You say doctors only are"writing medication", like it's not a big deal. Yeah, you have to get a right diagnosis for that first, and only then you have to know the exact meds you need to prescribe. Yes nurses are great, but they couldn't work without doctors prescriptions and guidance. Doctors can do okay without nurses, because they are taught to be both. Also, there's a difference between nurses and doctors mindset. You say, if I didn't get to medschool I'd waste 4 years. The thing is, doctors don't even doubt that they will get into Med school, because they don't see anything else for themselves as a career. Nurses usually have some doubts if they should go further.

There's polls on this all over social media. Nurses have an extremely solid foundation on hospital operations, and those with experience definitely understand disease process, appropriate treatment and medication. Nurses are responsible for ensuring medication orders/treatment plans fit with the description of the patients issues. So, actually, nurses would probably do better covering docs for a day then the other day around, because they have a basic understanding of the medical model. This is an idea generally accepted by doctors and nurses alike. You sound as if you are not in the medical field because I can promise you EVERYONE has doubts about the medical field in general. It is grueling and at times seems impossible and you just feel like a failure, like you will never be a strong provider. I was a pre-med student, and I can promise you this is the case for EVERY student I know that has been accepted into medical school. Definitive statements like the ones you mentioned are not safe to assume. :)
