The reason why the ocean is way scarier than outer space is because we know for sure that the deep ocean is not devoid of life.
@Vincisomething

I don't know if dying in the ocean or dying in space would be worse- especially the deep ocean. Either way, there's probably no one out who can save you, but at best, it'll probably take seconds to die or at least fall unconscious. Something about someone floating away helplessly in space to never be seen or being in the middle of the ocean (at the surface or in the deep) with no sight of land around you creeps me out.

@@Vincisomething The low pressure would initially boil off most of the water and what was left would freeze, halting any biological processes. Depending on the trajectory of the corpse, there might be some warming from the side facing the Sun, but all this would do is accelerate the rate of water loss, leaving only a dried husk.

The more I learn about the ocean the more convinced I am that Lovecraft was onto something... And about the cone snails the really messed up part is that each one has a different cocktail of toxins so two snails of the same species can have completely different venom, hence why there is no antidote.

I recall that people are studying the dynamics of the Manta Rays filter feeding as it requires no physical filters just hydro dynamics to filter particulates. Interesting technology coming from the ocean. Oh as for cone snails. They have a very unique system that allows them to on the fly create venom as needed per situation. Like on the fly chemistry distillation. Brady Haron from Numberphile interviewed a toxicologist from Australia about it. Both the cone snail and the stone fish were main topics.

Manta Rays are also doing migration, but there is catch they are using underwater "milestones" to find their way, like on a tresor map "after that moutain turn left to North-East until you reach the coral forest, etc", I remember seeing a picture of two Mantas swiming near a poity rock that bottom disapeared in the ocean deepness, and I thought "oh wow they are like planes before GPS came in, or space ships in sci fi settings having to go from one solar system to an other...", probably one of the coolest sea creature, that and the hammer and pistol shrimps (first one is just fabulous)

Lot of people talking about Thalassophobia, can we just take a moment to contemplate the mindset of the demon who thought it was funny to have Google display images of a searched phobia as one of the first results... Like if you search "phobia of roaches" just trying to learn the overly complicated names typical of phobias (ironically the phobia of long words is an extra long word) then it'll tell you it's Katsaridaphobia but then also display like 6 images of roaches directly under it with no warning.

Maybe im the weird one, buy i never quite understood the fear of ocean creatures. Most are pretty chill and quite harmless unless youre being super dumb. The vast majority just look ugly and the really dangerous ones tend to be near beaches rather than in the ocean itself, on top of not being interested in attacking humans at all. (Also, iirc, is more or less debatable if whales would really kill you with sound, given that sound travells differently in water [faster, not necesarilly stronger], on top of the fact that whales actually make less noise when humans are nearby. They can still mess your eardrumbs tho)

So either sailors of the old are either disturbed with "whale exhibitionism" or being metaphorical... And also jealous that whale's "assets" are bigger than theirs, and I think that's why whalers hunted them down Jesus Christ if that were true, then sailors back then are the pettiest of the petty.
