Hi there! I’m a natural dyer from Peru and I consider you to be one of my international dyer references. I really loved the vídeo and thank you for sharing this big desition you just made. So, H&M has already launched this “sustainable” branding some time ago (they have it on their website as “conscious”), but know they are focusing on colors, it is called “Colour Story”. Apparently they’re working with companies and people that focus on new material or less consuming dyes. Everything sounds perfect, but as you said, why not tell the story of a girl in India, where the mannufacturing is coming from? They claim they want to “empower the sustainable narrative”, but all the other steps in fast fashion seem to be the same. Anyways thank you again for sharing, we can all learn from your experiencie.

Thanks Evelyn. I’m honoured to be one of your references and appreciate that you already took the time to look into this!

I said No to a huge offer once..... It was very flattering, great $, said they'd do xyz. Now I'm retired with an absolutely clear conscience. I even feel I made a little bit of difference in my tiny corner of the world, even 50 years later

Thank you for your precious opinion. I'm apparel designer working in Japan and just before when pandemia started I had an opposition to attend a business seminar about sustainability as a "trend" growing all over the world. I must say that Japan is only seeing this as another trend (still much to learn here). And there was a H&M spokesman speaking passionately about H&M's environmental engagement. And soon after I made my routine research and I found that everything the guy was talking about wasn't at all reflected in the H&M shops. No small trace of sustainability there! Nothing but stuffed to the brim store was looking just hopeless for me. The green (sustainable) tags were sinking in the sea of rubbish. I was actually devastated and totally sad, because I still have keeping a kinda tiny hope that H&M did its homework after Rana Plaza collapsed. At least that. And no: they have nice website with "conscious mind" and talk widely nice words, but as long as I'm watching their Japanese stores, nothing literally changed. Shame...

People are waking up and that’s why they’re so desperately trying to appear “green”. It’s good, let’s keep positive! ❤️

This is incredibly inspiring. Many artists like you, i've followed/long-admired have "sold out" to a false marketing of ethical/sustainability, which made me question the values they preached for years. But the money, the exposure, that takes a great amount of strength to turn down and your decision is the direction that his planet, that nature prays for. It sounds dramatic, but we need your mindset to be infectious in order to begin healing.

I really do look up to your courage in taking this decision. You chose to be yourself fully, despite all the opportunities that might have come with collaborating with such a big brand. I think your choice also demonstrates true love and respect for us, your current community: even if we are not so many, you chose us over H&M, and I feel very proud of that

Good on you. Must have been hard to turn down the cash yes but they really would be piggybacking off you to greenwash us. I read somewhere that if a brand is a pushing a ‘sustainable’ line then the rest of their lines are unsustainable (seems obv but it’s something that is easy to overlook!). You would also have ended up with new folk following you that probably weren’t on your wavelength... You keep doing what you are doing 🙌💚

You spoke so much truth in this video. So true that they would rather use you as a Western ambassador to showcase that they are seemingly trying to be more green, rather than actually communicating with the people who dye and create their garments. Collaborating with you ultimately would have been a publicity stunt for them, rather than actively working towards some form of change. Honestly thanks so much for sharing this story. And thank you SO MUCH for saying no to them. They dangled a carrot in the form of 'exposure' and a cash payoff, which can be so tempting. But you remained true to your ethics, and in the process exposed their own values. Which are...."Ultimately, all they want to do is sell products, all they want to do is drive consumerism". And you're right, there is so much power in saying no. Thank you for saying no Billy.

I respect your decision and will take you more seriously moving forward. I am subscribed and will jump on new uploads quickly. A good transition and expansion plan from my perspective would be to team up with a seamstress/sewist to teach us how to craft a garment from naturally dyed pure silk-natural fiber yardage. That is what drew me to your videos originally. I cannot rely on upcycled clothing anymore as I am now a 40 yr old man and cannot find appropriate garments second hand. There is real need and desire to create clothing like simple shirts and bohemian pants. Billy Nou is a brand that I respect.

Thank you for sharing this! I've been in a similar position with these big companies. Thank you, what an extraordinary situation to have been in! Sharing your experience is really powerful to many. I really admire the sentiment of asking the question, why not give credibility to the person who is the maker? I've been tuning into your videos and greatly appreciate your help with understanding the process. I'm learning and see you as the go to for both inspiration and technical. What you share and how you do it is remarkable and supports true sustainability. Also, from my perspective, putting right a growing creative imbalance many an innately creative person feels, as many of these traditional crafts and learning opportunities are not the focus in mainstream education as much as they once were. Through education, it helps promote the change back to slow fashion. You have such great integrity an awesome role model for me and my creative kids. Brightest of Blessings from Australia, Eloise

Thank you for sharing your opinion here. Your words are really encouraging. I am traditional Japanese indigo Dyer and using all natural pigments, not even lime. I changed my works very strictly biodegradable for consideration of environment. These days I see many famous brands using natural dye for their promotion and made me feel sad. As you said, there are people behind actually paying for the price and also pollution are coming out everyday. One of Japanese famous natural indigo dye brand tagged with fast brand and I couldn’t respect them anymore. Like me, many people are so proud what you decided, and also you giving us confidence what we are trying to be. Again, thank you.

I've never seen you or your channel before, but this video was recommended to me and I'm really happy it was. I've noticed a lot of influencers promoting h&m and their "sustainable" collections, and I'm happy to say that I have been noticing comments from their followers calling them out on working with such a greenwashing brand. More and more people are becoming aware of how bad fast fashion brands are, but there are still a lot of people who don't realise these brands are just using the word "sustainable" to sell cheap products. So thank you for making a video that directly calls out a brand by name - I think more people should be brave enough to do this 💕

Thanks! I truly don't like how they try to build credit by asking people who are known to run an ethical/ sustainable business and have build an audience around that to work with them. And there's probably people who've been persuaded by the money and the exposure and might just end up regretting it because a lot of people can see though the marketing and realize that given their prices they aren't actually making the necessary changes to their business model. And they can't, it's fast fashion, it's inherently unsustainable and unethical. It's a good thing that you're addressing it.

We live in a fast phased world that most of the time we miss to listen to our inner voice because we tend to listen to what other dictates. Integrity is a rare trait, only those who have the courage can carry it. Hats off to you! ❤️✨

Hey! Thank you so much for sharing this story with us! It's a brave choice to do it. And it really shows where you stand and where your values are. As human beings started to awaken from this destructive nature, more and more people will turn to the 'legit' people, like you, because of this refusal you are showing us so much more credibility. Thank you for this ! It's so nice to see conscious people taking back their power back. Good luck!

Mad respect. You’re right about large companies trying to jump on trends and portray a more natural look to their company and products. You can see this a lot in the food industry as large companies buying out small natural ones. It absolutely is green washing and manipulation of the public. They are looking for small creators to use because it helps shape the image they want to portray. Good for you!

Thank you for this video. I needed to hear what you said and yes. Why does H&M not showcase the people who make their garments really? So important.

Because they know how shocked we would be. Stone washed jeans for example. The workers end up with lung damage.
