Mint 400 used to be an awesome race. Since being taken over by the bro’s it’s turned into greed fest and ridiculous show. Even quit spectating. Wes you did the right thing by leaving and not tearing your up car just to be dq’d. And for any owner to be anywhere during the event shows how disrespectful of the sport they are.

Savage did the same shit to us. We raced Sportsman Unlimited Truck at the post pandemic December mint. Passed Tech no problem. (And many previous races in BITD, Vorrsa and LEGACY). Then we went to race the following post pandemic March Mint at which Savage failed us and was a COMPLETE A**HOLE to us and others. He said my tubing size was to small and I was over 4000lbs (without even knowing actual weight). I was not over 4k l. I requested to be weighed to prove it however Savage would give us the time of day. We also took our case to Kilian and Matt with the same run-around they gave you. We will not be racing Mint until Savage is gone and some standardized non-bias rule enforcement is in place.

Sorry for the grammar and typos. I listened to your situation and it got me all fired up! I follow the rules, my was built to every rule. But he made his own up with every vehicle that went through tech. He failed others that had my same same chassis but passed others because he built them. When we confront him as to why they were allowed and we were not, he claimed I was overweight for my tubing which was absolutely not true. Anyway, getting fires up again. Sorry that you and your team had to go through all that. I've been there.

@johngeary8534 Lol. There is nothing to expose. Bill Savage has been around a long time. His reputation proceeds himself. He's in the off road hall of fame, he helped build Ivan Stewart's legacy, back in the day he was the shit. With that being said he has been fired from every other agency as Tech director...BITD, SCORE, SNORE etc...he worked for them and got canned from all of them because he's an asshole and unfair. So everyone already knows about him. Now, the Martellis...the owners of the race also own Mad Media. All they care about is making a good TV show, they do not care about the racers. This is why everything up to the race is such a big spectacle...all makes great TV. So, there isn't anything to expose that all racers don't already know. The big name pro guys will always race with them because it's awesome exposure for the sponsors..us little guys....they couldn't care less.

@@WesMiller70Wes I am a lead tech official and tech director. I am also a former champion owner in our series. A series OWES it's competitors an even playing field with clear, understandable rules. Writing the rules is hard as you know. There are judgement calls that have to be made, and even when unpopular, tech has final say.....but refusing to rule is just flat ridiculously unfair to ALL of the competitors. My stuff was always straight as an arrow as a competitor. Being on the other side of the coin now, above and beyond what is legal....is being consistent! Either you're going to allow it or you are not. When caught in a moment as a tech official or owner....say "oof....we blew it on that one, we're sorry. Here's what we are going to do for this weekend, and here's what we are going to do going forward" AND COMMUNICATE IT. People will grumble, but they've fucked up before too. In the end, the racer will remember you for making it right, not for making the mistake. It's easy to say "just load up and go home"....but there's a lot more to it than that on the racer's end, and if a series sends a competitor home....it should be the ones who think the rules don't apply to them, not the guy trying to make sure he's legal by asking tech to make a decision. The real stupid part about it was given enough time, you were willing to take it off....all you needed was a decision.

Shit situation and they could’ve handled it better. You also knew Wednesday night and could’ve swapped the part out. Avoided it all or swapped class then. I ran a half ass car in pro turbo at cal 300 instead of rally mod because I knew someone would probably protest my radiator even though rule wasn’t clear whether it was legal or not. Tried to reach savage by email no response. Definitely is one of the tougher parts of the sport being from the east coast with no shops around that know the rules. Left guessing if your car will pass tech depending on the series or how they’re feeling. Couldn’t imagine that happening to me last year after we all traveled from Maryland to race the mint. What a bummer.

Unfortunately these things occur in a lot of Motorsports when it comes to rules and the interpretation of what is legal/illegal. But the way that this was handled with you being strung along was unprofessional and sounds quite frankly like a clusterf#@k. To essentially not even allow you to race in your class or another after all of the work and time sacrificed is unfair on many levels. You absolutely did the right thing. First, by ensuring everything on your rig was legal, and what was seen as an issue, you went through proper channels for clarification. Secondly you deciding not to run was the best decision to make. You helped write the rules and if it was founded that you had a part that didnt meet the rules, it would have brought your integrity into question. It doesnt seem like these guys were concerned about that one bit. Then blowing off your concerns and texts . Ridiculous.

I have no dog in this race, but just have to ask. When you heard the hood was illegal even though you disagreed you changed it out. Then with the brace you again disagreed, but tried to argue it. At no point did you just say screw it, lets just change this out and go racing? It seems from an outside perspective you wanted to be right so bad even saying multiple times "you helped write the rules" that you cost your team their time and effort cause you couldnt accept their ruling. Sucks what happened, but there was more than one lesson here to learn.

If you helped write the rules for the class and steering racks were ok, it seems like it would be called out.like the tie rods were. Gusseting or adding material at suspension points is not the same as an aftermarket steering brace, which is an advantage over stock or it would not be used by most racers. Not a fan of Bill but if he told you it didn’t pass before the race and you didn’t have a clear decision by the night before the race, probably would have been best to remove for that race at least. If a hood scoop didn’t pass, a steering rack wouldn’t pass for sure. There was no reason for a steering rack to be a gray area. If it was and the tech director said you failed due to it, better to race w out and clear up for the next race. Communication sucked from what it seems, but tech was clear before the race that didn’t pass the rules. If you wrote rules, another racer had a brace and you didn’t have one because of the rules would you protest? Not sure but sounds like could have been avoided.
@WesMiller70
@WesMiller70 9 ай бұрын
It wasn't that simple. The hood took a minute to change. It is 2 screws and I had the stock hood. The Sandcraft brace is almost more of a tie rod kit. It uses the stock outer and it's own inner. Tie rods are open. I also had the stock rack, knuckles and spindles, so I was good there. I didn't have extra tie rods to swap out. When this first happened, I called the owner of Shock Therapy and they overnighted a set to me. So I thought that I would have them as a back up plan. At the same time, I was trying to get a unified answer. Thursday afternoon, I tracked the package and found out it wasn't going to be delivered until Friday. So I started calling other racers to find parts. Not too long after, I spoke with the race owner before the driver's meeting and was told that I was legal. Both the race director and tech director told me that he had the final say, so I thought that I was good. Then in staging, I was told that I wasn't and at that point it was too late. But I didn't have the part anyway. I have also spoken with other tech directors and numerous other racers that all agree the brace should have been legal per the rules.
@tim6987
@tim6987 9 ай бұрын
@@WesMiller70 I feel your pain. The reason I say this is because in the first CA300 there was some ambiguity on a legal exhaust for stock class. Weeks before the race I emailed the race director and got a written reply that it was the same rule used for another class, with a specific rule number reference. So I had it in writing. Pre-race tech was fine, then after winning the car was was post teched and Bill decided it didnt pass and didnt care about the written approval. Fortunately I had the emails - and it still took hours for a decision to be made, which due to having it in writing was in our favor. Had it not been in writing, it would have been a DQ over an OEM replacement exhaust that made no HP difference, just a sponsor opportunity. Ideally all the rules are clear, but thats very hard to do in every case - it may seem clear to some and not to others. Just based on my experience with that series, if not confirmed in writing I would have taken off - and I know what a hassle a steering brace is, just sucks that you could not get a written text or email confirmation in time either way to give you the direction you needed to be able to race. Had to have been a huge disappointment for the supporting team as well as you and the co driver.

But If I figured things out and did all the work and spent all the money to get there I’d be way more upset than you. I know how much it takes, I’ve prepped trucks and been on race teams. Now Matt definitely has a lot on his plate, I obviously don’t know what it’s like to run a huge series like that. He’s probably got a number of other drivers doing the same thing all at the same time. But one thing I don’t agree with for sure is if he was out drinking at the party. He needs to be focused that whole weekend on making things the best they can be. That can clearly affect his judgement and make him foggy the next day or next few days. Now I only know any of you guys through social media because I have a huge passion for off-road racing. So my opinion may not be super valid. But hey maybe give him another opportunity to make up for what he did. Maybe he was just way overwhelmed with everything going on at the moment. I have to add this. Won't be a popular comment. Life, racing and trails were so much better before UTV's became the popular thing. I'd like a sport quad comeback of sorts to happen. Get these big heavy over priced tanks out of the lime light.

Wes, Here is my take and I have experienced in this and in UTV class rules writing. First off MM hired Savage to be the Tech Director. So IMO this was not a Matt or Kilian decision to make. This was a Savage decision and his should be final. (Btw I’ve had my run ins with Bill, but I respect his position) You said you helped write the rules, so you should know better then anyone else what’s legal or not. You acknowledged that steering had to be stock, accept tie rods where open. You acknowledged that the suspension could have reinforcement added for strengthing. You also acknowledged that this rack mount was in a gray area. Being that you helped write the rules, you knew that was more then a gray area, and if this was important and you had already been running this brace, why did you not discuss and get this in the rules? Then when you were getting wishy washy answers back from Matt, why not just say to your team, Hey guys, let’s pull this mount now, and we can deal with this after the race. Clearly Matt was trying to avoid giving you a straight answer. He was avoiding calling Bill, as he probably feels Bill is the final decision and did not want to get involved. Plus he knew Bill said No! So that’s your answer. IMO you had 48 hours to pull the mount, go race and after the race, sit back down with Savage, Matt & whoever else was involved in the rule making, and go back over these “Gray areas”. But instead you kept pushing to try to get the answer you wanted to hear. And in the end you got told to go home. This sucks for everyone involved. Matt should have just been straight and said I don’t make these decisions as I hired Bill to do it, and his decision is final. But you should have just pulled the mount as you knew it was not really legal. This why you wanted insurance to protect your race incase of a protest. Like I said I too have helped write rules for this very class for another series.

I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy. When we went over the rules, I brought up that I had the brace. We decided that it was legal. But I didn't actually type the updates. The rules say you need a stock rack, knuckles, and spindles, but tie rods are open. This brace could almost be considered a tie rod kit. So I felt like it was kind of covered, but not as well as I would have liked. When I got to pre-tech on Wednesday afternoon, I looked around and saw some of the other cars in the class and figure there were going to be issues. So I wanted to cover my bases. I had already passed tech and I pulled Bill aside and asked him about the brace. That is when he said it was not legal. At this point, it was pretty late to get parts. I reached out to the owner of Shock Therapy and had him overnight a set of his tie rods so that I would have a back up plan. I didn't want to change it because that meant realigning the car, etc... I have my car aligned at a shop in town, so there wasn't going to be time to do that. But I was willing to do it if I had to. At the same time, I tried to get a decision out of Matt and Kilian. Thursday, I was down on Fremont all day doing various things. I was finally told that Matt had to make the call. It was now in the afternoon and I checked to see if the tie rods had been delivered to my shop. They hadn't and when I tracked them, UPS had delayed the shipment. So now I didn't have parts. I called around and spoke with several racers, trying to find a set. But I wasn't having much luck. It was almost time for the driver's meeting, so I found Matt and asked for a decision. He told me I was all good and not to worry about it. So I stopped calling for parts. But later I went back to tech to confirm with Bill and he said no. So I went and found Matt again and he said yes I was legal. So I called Kilian and said we need to figure this out. He told me not to worry and to meet him at staging in the morning. At this point, I didn't have parts to swap out on the car, so that wasn't an option and I had been told that I was good. Then at staging when we met, I was told that I could race, but I would be DQ'd if protested. I said that doesn't work. Either I am legal for Pro Stock or move me to another class. They said it was too late to move me to another class and the only one that could make this decision was Matt. But he wouldn't respond to my calls or texts while in staging, so it came to a head on the start line. I actually don't really fault Bill in this. He never wavered on his position. But from my stand point, I don't know how I could have done this any differently or handled it any better. The thing that sucked is when I got home from the race, the Shock Therapy package was sitting at more door. I tried to get parts to change it if we had to, but it was too last minute. And after I was told by the race owner and race director that I was good and not to worry about it. Why would I have changed it? The whole situation sucks because I was really looking forward to the race and was competing for the championship.

I dont understand why you would go over and over trying to figure out if you were legal. Your whole video was of you trying to convince someone that you were. Why not simply pull it off and know you're legal. You had one issue that you could have taken care of easily. If i had that much time and money invested, i wouldn't have left it to chance. It seems like you were trying to work a GRAY area, and it didn't work out. And like you repeatedly said, you helped write the rules. You clearly didn't do a good job and left things to be misinterpreted. Next time add a *and specify that a certain part is legal to use.. Also, you never got a clarification on being legal , so why would you go to the starting line.

It wasn't as simple as that. The hood was 2 screws and I had the stock one. I didn't have another set of tie rods to put on the car. When we went over the rules leading up to the race, I brought up the brace and it was decided that it was legal. I also felt like it was fairly well covered in the rules. So I had no expectation that I would be told it was illegal at tech. When I was told at tech, I immediately reached out to one of my other sponsors to get a set of tie rods sent to me. They overnighted a set, but they ended up being delayed and not delivered until race day. When I found out they were being delayed, I reached out to other racers to see if they had a spare set. But then prior to the driver's meeting I was told that I was legal. So I stopped trying to get parts. I was then told not to worry about it and to come to staging early and we would get it all straightened out. Hopefully that better explains it for you.
