I have a feeling the 411 will be looked at as a classic in the future because of it's looks and simplicity whereas the 450 not so

The old himalayan was a pre harris performance buyout designed bike by a guy who used to work for Ducati. It basically looks like a Jeep wrangler on two wheels. Unfortunately the new bike looks like a giant mosquito on two wheels or a badly mutated dual sport. The blame squarely should be put on Harris performance for designing this monstosity. Although I am sure it will significantly improve on every technical aspect compared to the old bike.

My 411 has been amazing and surpassed every expectation. I’ve ridden from Cornwall to the west coast of Ireland, toured Snowdonia, 2-up trips out, commuting year round, and with knobblies it’s a useful green laner. It does run out of legs on motorways but I avoid them when possible and make allowances. I won’t be tempted by the 450. The 411 does all I need and it’s cute 😊

@@TheHimalayanDiaries I’ve no doubt you’ll enjoy your owns adventures on the Himmy. I’m afraid I can’t advise you on tyres. I use Pirelli MT21’s for off road. They’re awesome but hideous on the road. A lot of people swear by Continental TKC 80’s, and Michelin Anakee Wild’s look good but I have no personal experience of them, sorry. Side note - I had two gripes with the bike. Maybe just down to the individual but, I found the stock seat was awful, and the touring seat no better. And I found the buffeting unbearable. I had the seat customised and cut the screen down so it just gives the clocks some protection. Transformed the bike for me 👍🏼

No problem on the tyre front-im going to get some use out of the stock tyres before I change over anyway 😊. I usually struggle with seats and added gel inserts to my street triple, but so far the standard seat has been ok for me, although I haven't done any big mileage days yet. As I've only just passed the initial run in period with the bike I can't say I've noticed the screen issue either, but I've heard lots of people don't get on with it and opt for a small offering.

I agree with you. I bought the 411 for next year and think the same about the 450. The new bike doesn't look right to me, and it costs more, like you said. I also believe the original Himalayan will hold it's value well, with it's cult following and being relatively new to Europe market. At least that's what I sense, They only started selling it the Baltics a couple of years ago, and even later in Estonia. I think there's only about 20 registered Himalyans in Estonia. The ones I've seen sold second-hand were almost as expensive as new ones.
@TheHimalayanDiaries
@TheHimalayanDiaries 10 ай бұрын
That's interesting to know about the Baltic market- didn't realise that. Here in the UK they're a little more common so I don't think values will hold quite as well, but with a relatively low retail price the good news for owners is there isn't much money to lose- especially if they're kept long term.

I waited till this year to buy a 2023 411cc mod , because it had the ECU upgrade, the usb plugs, and the were giving quite a discount, prior to the new 450 coming out here in OZ. I also prefer the look of the current model, it very much reminds me of the 70's model trail bikes I used to own. Nah I much prefer the 411, over the new, not bothered by power or speed, I live in the bush, average speed on the roads around here by everyone is 90kmphr.

Looks are important and the new 450 looks ugly. If I don’t like the look of a bike it affects my riding style. I’d resent it as soon as I sat on it. If they’d just rebored the existing Himalayan and left the looks alone, I’d have considered it for its speed on the highways. But they managed somehow to design a blob for a petrol tank and an exhaust pipe that looks like scaffolding on a building site. They can keep all the other performance improvements because I don’t want to go near that thing.

It's funny cause you talk about looks as if the older model was a beauty, but it's not. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look bad, but it's nowhere near to be considered a good looking bike. It's just big and imposing, but not very attractive, at least to my eye. Having said that, I don't see why looks matter so much on the new one for so many people. I bet RE didn't aim this new bike at Himalayan owners, it's more for people who are looking to upgrade from a lower cc bike but don't want a slow big bulk of metal.

The main point I agree with is the price. In Australia it has to be cheaper than the DRZ and CRF Rally, otherwise it’ll struggle. Current model 411 is about $2000 difference- which represents a reasonable deal.

Some of the cons of the 411 -> Engine is a giant metal block. It heats up very quickly in stop and go traffic and in a tropical country like India it gets so hot that it causes the injector and the fuel pump motor to go bad from all that heat. -> Engine has a lot of mechanical clatter compared to a Japanese equivalent. -> Engine efficiency is not great at higher speeds. I think it is the older engine design and tuning for low end because of which highway mileage is not great. -> Weight is unnecessarily high. More weight == less efficiency basically you need to burn more fuel to pull your weight. -> Welds on the bike do not look good. Just compare the chassis welds to a KTM's welds or any Japanese bike. -> Checkered history of production issues. It is a great bike if you like to go slow. Take your time and enjoy the ride. Also maintenance can be done anywhere because the engine is so simple. I would prefer the newer version. It seems to be a balanced motorcycle.

I quite like what they have done with the 450, especially as it addresses a long neglected niche in the market for the 'goldilocks' adv bike, enough power / comfort to handle motorways and small / light / cheap and competent enough to be a good adv. Otherwise I agree with all you points. I will also say that the decision (411 vs 450) is a bit more complicated than it might seem, as the 411 is in a class of its own. Totally analogue and as simple as it gets these days, which bodes well for getting servicing done in backwoods garages if on long trips. 450 has water cooling, shim under bucket valve adjustment, upside down forks that will probably blow seals on the road, and more electronics. Its a different proposition. With respect to looks, I think the answer lies in the designer they hired for the 411 project. Pierre Terblanche is the same guy that designed Ducati Multistrada (original one) and the 999 and 749 sportsters. I agree that the 450 looks a bit meh, kind of indifferent, but I still think they have made a good bike if you want one.

There are rumblings of a Scram 440 coming out next year, which will be based on the 411 oil and air cooled engine. I originally thought it would basically be a Scram 411 with a big bore kit from the factory essentially, but supposedly it has a few other changes like a smaller fuel tank so it's kinda unkown what it will look like. I hope it's just a refinement on the existing Scram 411 and keeps some of the scrambler feature like the large suspension travel. It will supposedly be a cheaper option to the Himalayan 450, and will replace the Scram 411 in the lineup.

It's funny, when I posted in one of the first KZbin vids that the new Hima isn't what the 411 was (utilitarian, simple, cheap if dropped) a shitstorm broke lose. Now it's the other way round😂😂😂 The 411 marketing "tricked" people into "I want to go adventure" - people bought the adventure aspect not the reality. The 411 is excellent where it can play it's strengths, read: for markets with slow paced traffic and lots of off-road options. It's not for Europe with fast paced traffic and off-roading mostly prohibited. Now lots and lots of Himas are for sale, sometimes with panniers, very low mileage (below 6k miles / 10k KM) 20% cheaper then what I sold my excessively used 18' 411 Hima 2 years ago for - go figure. That said I wouldn't buy the 411 again cos even though I love it dearly it's not the right bike for my use / environment.

I bought my 411 new in June. I didn't wait for the 450 because the release date kept being pushed back, so I could ride a bike now or wait for another year or more. Also, I expect the first release of anything to have some issues. Highway speeds are fine on the 411, long roads and steady inclines are easy. However, I'd consider a bike with more power because the 411 struggles up moderate hills on paved roads. I find myself wishing there was more power left in the throttle rather than empty space, or having to gear down to 4th or 3rd to get up a hill with cars behind me wondering why I'm doing 35mph/60kph on a 60mph/100kph road. If you ride on roads triumph is better but if going off road, the two cannot be compared. The triumph is a short stroke high revving engine, with zero proper off road ability. The himmy 411 tractors up pretty much anything and can take a proper hammering (mine has!!). My concern with the 450 is whether they have compromised on the low down grunt in the search for that magic 40hp. Also the first enfield water cooled bike….give them a couple of years to get that sorted! Thermostats, water pumps, radiator, hoses, fans, all on a budget, recipe for problems. The best thing about 411 is the reliability and simplicity of that motor. Valve clearances can be done easily on the move, all its faults have either been fixed since 2016 launch or there are known fixes out there. Install a tec cam and you are only 11hp shy of the 450 with all the other benefits. I agree the 450 aesthetic is not good.

Picked up an ex-demo 411 today. Totally sorted, meticulous service history, under 6k miles on the clock with loads of decent upgrades and extras, £3k. Bargain. Had to use the (M1) motorway for speed and convenience to get home, a 70 mile journey, and I wasn't looking forward to it. But the Himalayan proved that it will easily hold 70mph all day, guess how long that journey took. Looking forward to getting the Himmy into its more natural setting however. I too, considered waiting for the 452 model. But having seen a few 'first impressions' test rides on YT, and looking at the more complicated specifications, I just decided to keep it simple. The 411 is a future classic. It's more than the sum of its parts. By far. Resilient, reliable and versatile. Might have just 24bhp, but faster than a Hyabusa down a dirty track. That's the point. Thing is, it isn’t an enduro level bike. I have a Fantic 500 which has 40hp and 150Kg which does for mainly road use and an XT250 for green lanes as a novice and wouldn’t need the extra power. If I was a more experienced rider off road, I’d buy a KTM 350 EXC. The standard Himmy is pretty much a comfier, heavier XT. It’s going to be up against bikes like the Honda 450 and the new Kove 450 which are less novice friendly - maybe that’s exactly where it’s aimed ?

@@andyc750 One of its tricks is the result of that long stroke engine it’s easy for novices to ride in tricky terrain. I’ve taken the Fantic off road and the extra power makes it more like an MX bike and that power delivery would suit a more experienced rider. My friend has the Himmy and I have the little XT250 so it’s a good comparison with similar power, but that big, torquey 411 walks away from me unless I’m revving the nuts off the Yamaha. Even though the Fantic has twice the power, the Himmy still does well using the torque on winding back lanes - the Fantic is faster, but I can’t cruise comfortably at 70mph despite the power, so there’s not really an advantage unless I’m having fun on the back lanes. I also own a Vitpilen 701 which in enduro guise would do everything you’d want if you are skilled off road. It does make mincemeat out of the other bikes and with a massive lump of torque and lighter weight than the Himmy.

Keeping my 411, but thinking of putting in a cam and and a 16 tooth sprocket. I like it as it is but would be sweet with a little higher cruise speed. Be nice to find a fix for the front brake, caliper off another bike or something.

I waited a lot for himy 450 but due to uncertainty of its launch and a brand new engine from RE made me buy scram 411 in last year's end. I have ridden BS4 himalayan and with scram this engine got in the best version of it. I knew himy 411 gonna be discontinued soon but scram was soo smooth that i bought it straightaway. In most instances torque of scram is enough for me with decent mileage on highways also i think new himy 450 looks really ugly and side panel looks so tiny.

@@TheHimalayanDiaries So, a load of my bolts rounded off. Some sheared off (which made replacing parts a nightmare because i had to replaxe the brake pedal). The headlight assembly cracked and needed to be replaced. Rear master cylinder failed. Fuel relays failed. The evap system needed ripping out as that caused me problems. Its a shame because I genuinely loved the bike and wanted it to be better. I hope the 450 uses better parts.

Wow! That sounds like an absolute nightmare! 🤞I don't have a similar experience. I'd expect there'll be a few teething problems with the new bike as it's such a leap forward. It may be best to leave it for a few years and wait until all of the issues are ironed out before taking the plunge. That's if your first experience hasn't put you off of course! I wouldn't blame you if it has!

@@TheHimalayanDiaries Fingers crossed your ownerships goes well. I think a lot of my issued were due to water as I kept my bike outside (covered) at the time. Its all I can think of as I've not heard that many problems from folk in drier countries. In any case, if the 450 is priced as well as the 411 then I'd give them another shot in a few years.

I've ridden almost everything with off-road capability (and a fair few road bikes) produced since the 60's and grabbed a test ride on a 411 at an ADV festival a couple of months ago. Immediately I was catapulted back to the days of mediocre junk from my youth and can't see the attraction in any way. Why buy a gutless bike with no power, poor handling, indifferent brakes, miserable suspension and below average build quality?

Remember, the Himalayan comes with crash protection which adds weight. Other bikes may be a bit lighter but if you put crash bars on them they will be as heavy or close to as heavy as the Himalayan. The difference is that you have to buy the crash bars and install them where as the Himalayan comes with the crash bars.

Yep keeping mine. Still trying to decide between the Givis and stock Enfields for crash bars. Also cant decide between Sidis, Formas and RST for boots😂 New Himmy will be £6500 or similar am guessing. Agreed cant stand the looks of the new one. What were they smoking? P.s Yeah I want a 2nd bike for a bit of speed. Might go to the NEC next month.

The new himalayan looks ugly. The old one even though has its shortcomings it has a certain charm like every other enfield. The 411 was designed by an Italian designer, they should have stuck to one. Although the new himalayan is generic looking, it's much better than lots of other adventure bikes. If the rumors are true they will stop selling the 411 himalayan but continue to sell the scram.

In my humble opinion, RE have screwed up on the design of the new bike. Surely they must realise the styling of the original was its USP. Why not just add the new tech to the old styling, they would have been on to a winner combo. Baffling.... t?
