Why I don't deliver on the Brompton

I've been a bike courier for 2 yrs. now. I dumped that backpack in a few weeks in favor of a front porteur rack, porteur rack bag, cargo net & PDW handlebar mounted drink holders. I put the food the thermal delivery bags, then into the porteur rack bag, then secure it w. the cargo net. If I get a pizza, I flatten the porteur rack bag down and use the cargo net to secure the pizza to the porteur rack. I installed on a large Minoura porteur rack on my Bike Friday. With it's really long fork steering tube, it'd be easy to secure one of those food delivery backpack/boxes to it. This would be preferred courier setup as the the smaller bike would be easier to handle & navigate sidewalks, apartment buildings & motels with. And if you're tired and far away from home, it's that much easier to take on public transit w. you.

Love your riding videos...it reminds me when I lived in L.A. in the late 80's and didn't have a car for two years. I'm a fan of cheap serviceable bikes. I bought brand new, heavy ass, steel Schwinn and my missionary companion bought an Italian wonder. Nobody tried to steal that red Schwinn...ever. The cholos in the neighborhood painted flames on it. My companion went thru two: the first campy was stolen; and the second one was wrapped around the pole where it was locked by two kryptons. Finally, Elder C bought himself a Schwinn like mine. I'm sure that it's still around...bulletproof. Love them for what they are :)

Another great vid, Brian. I’ve got a Bromie with S bars. And have been contemplating doing food delivery when my day job goes to zero hours contract later in year. This has given me food for thought. I’ve found so many of your vids so so informative (… and entertaining!). Bromton users may initially come to your channel because of the Bromie connection, but we stay because of you. All good things.

I have 2 Bromptons, M6L-X for my weekend rides with my mates and a B75 for daily use. I think if the M bar is more suitable for your bike messengering as you sit more upright than your S bar. You can actually replace your straight handlebar with an aftermarket low riser. Enjoy your videos, ride safe Bro!

How is the Dahon customer service experience? They gave you the 10% discount for first buyers? I tried to buy the same Dahon last Monday, and applied the coupon code they offered me at checkout, but it didn't work. Contact customer support, no answers! If they don't answer new customers, imagine after you buy? So I'm now waiting for my new Zizzo Liberte that will arrive with fenders, Zizzo customer support has been excellent!

I was looking for a used bromtpon for a reasonable price around my area but had no luck.. ended up buying a Dahon mariner d7 for 220$ don’t regret it for riding around the city

I use my Brompton a lot. I go through a set of tyres each year, hinge every 2, rear wheel rim every 3, brake pads each year. It’s an excellent bike but mechanical things wear out and to a degree commuting is harder on a bike than doing longer runs due to repeated stop/start, folding and carrying etc. thanks for your films.

@@pfscpublic not sure of mileage but it will be several thousand. I use schwalbe Marathons. I do most of the servicing myself I recently got an electric Brompton so that I’m now cycling 20 km to and from work plus using it for visits to patients. Either way it’s much better and much cheaper than driving especially with the cost of fuel. Thanks

Brian my folding bike has a plastic disk on both side's of the crank so the chain runs in the groove so it can't jump off guess you can buy them as an accessory from a bike shop...

I recommend you get a narrow wide chainring for you bike. I never experienced chain drops after installing narrow wide chainring on my 1by bikes but rear derailleur has to be properly tuned and chain cannot be too long or too short. That sucks to be constantly worried about your chain dropping.

I've been looking into narrow/wide chain rings as they have been suggested before by others. I'm having trouble finding one that has 58 or 60 teeth.... No dice yet.

Brian, I like the effect the old film strip on the cycling parts 👌. In the mtb days lots of companies were making chain guides/rollers etc.. I think with newer 4 bolt pattern stems and some cable connectors (like Moulton uses). In ten minutes with dual components you could swap FUN bars for WORK... just spit ballin...;-) of course the cost of the swap means you would have to deliver during crazy time hrs

I found out that on my Tern, which is an 8-speed, you have to have the derailleur adjusted perfectly, and stop pedaling when you hit big bumps.

My derailleur goes out adjustment all the time. But you're right about stopping the petals. I've found that works....i just forget too much😀👍

I do food delivery with my Brompton in nyc. I don’t really care about the wear and tear. I can’t go back to riding an inferior folding bike compare to the Brompton.

I'm begging for the day when you can get your hands on a Velo Orange Neutrino Mini-Velo for review. From what I am seeing, you don't seem to fold your bikes that often. Maybe the Neutrino is a better fit for your riding. It's not a folder per see, but it might as well be. Definitely a lot more self-serviceable than any folding bike out there. I might think about getting one for off-roading and as an N+1 bike.

It is also my impression (of course just mine looking from the outside) that FOR YOUR HEIGHT the S bar may be a but too low, even given the fact that you prefer riding in an aggressive sporty position. Which I also do. But being 5ft9 S is sporty enough for me and already puts me in a fairly aggressive position. You're much taller si I can imagine how forward you may ride especially cause you use the bike also for commuting long distance and not only for leisure short sporty rides. But again, it's all subjective.

The A bar maybe too low for me...if my back wasn't so screwed up I would probably be ok with an M bar.

I used an M-bar one, then a year later the H-bar came out. That H-bar was definitely a big improvement. No way I'm riding an S-bar one.

I've been doing DD by bike for 2 yrs now. In my area, $75 for 3 hrs is a good night. $25/hr is above avg. pay for me. I'd say I avg. $20/hr.

Hey man, thanks again for a great cycle-life video. Through watching your video's I'm accumulating a growing list of reasons why not to buy a Brompton. Its really helping me counter the hype about a 1950's era folding bicycle that has been, or should have been left behind by the dustbin of history. The one that shines through in this video, and in fact was a big reason for me not plumping for one is the lack of adjustment in handlebar height. Isn't it absurd that a bike that costs 5-10 times a more than a modern folding bicycle can't adjust the handlebar height? OK, I admit I'm trolling you a bit here, but the way I'm seeing it is someone needs to counter the ludicrous over-hype surrounding the Brompton.

Most folding bikes will not stand up to the daily use/abuse like a diamond frame bike. The folding joints will eventually wear out & fail. The components are cheaper. Most of which can be fixed & replaced. People have done fully loaded touring around the world on a Brompton. I would never. A Bike Friday Pocket Llama replaced my Surly Long Haul Trucker touring bike w. no issues nor loss of capability. It actually added one, the ability to fold for transport. Folding bikes aren't generally designed to replace diamond frame bikes. They're designed to be a substitute for them. Mostly for when you want to travel w. your bike.
