However, if you're a high-profile person, flying private is worth the money. Reason: increased privacy on many long flights. For example, singer Taylor Swift is just *TOO* high profile to fly commercial, even if the airport offers special facilities specifically for high-profile travelers. That's why she owns a Dassault Falcon 900 for domestic travel and a Dassault Falcon 7X for long-distance international travel.

This was interesting Andrew. I appreciate your perspective. My husband and I are probably your parents age and we have experienced the decline of commercial air travel first hand. My husband worked as a diplomat and we have traveled to and lived in more countries than I can count. We absolutely hate commercial travel now. It’s horrible, and there is always at least one narcissist who walks onto the plane with a lidless cup of hot coffee talking really loud on his mobile phone. Said person sat next to me on a recent flight and spilled his coffee on my white jeans. Flight attendants and customer service agents used to smile and make at least a small show of caring. Now they will barely look at you, let alone speak to you. Travelers used to be served meals on long flights and business class were served on table cloths and real glassware and flatware. Those days are gone. Now you are lucky to get a glass of water and a bag of chips.

If you compare business class to first class nowadays there is a huge gap. First class will give you privacy, attention, etc whatever your needs are what you just described. You can't compare something that was first class in your time to the recent times where first class is what you basically want but can't afford.

Chartering is vastly different than owning a private jet. As whether it's a jet, turbo-prop (which in many cases is faster and more efficient) or prop (single or dual). Full ownership | fracutual ownership is a separate type of model - now you have depreciation, asset, etc to factor. Flying privately is about TIME - they are selling time. What is your time worth? If you fly privately and have 3/4 ppl onboard - you are immensely more productive onboard a private flight than a commercial. If you are earning $10MM/yr - that's $4807/hr (2080hrs - std yrly hr factor) and the 'commercial flight-time is 5hrs - I said flight-time - now add (2+hrs for departure nonsense) - that's +/- 7-8hrs of your $4807/hr time - $33K opportuntiy cost for this single flight. NOW - let's add the opportunity costs for the 3 other ppl on the flight - assume $250/hr - that equates to ($250 x 3ppl x 7hrs = $5250) - now we are looking at +/- $38K for a '5hr' flight PLUS the cost of the commercial tickets. AND the time aboard the commercial flight is non-efficient and non-productive - wasting $30K+ (even assuming there is a miniscule of productivity). Also, not to mention that you are a slave to the commercial flight schedules AND destination hubs... Now private - assume a jet - same 5hr flight-time. BUT the departure time is cut to almost nothing - you show up - wheels up in 15/20 min. $6.5K/hr for the 'jet' x 5hrs = $32.5K - even if you call it a wash - the time in the 'jet' is fully productive and NOT an opportunity cost. AND you fly when it's convenient for you NOT the airlines schedule AND go to the destination you need to (assuming the airport runway length can support a priv jet). It's about time - when you actually crunch the numbers - and factor in the other nonsense that one has to deal with when using a commercial airline - flying private can make sense. Just my 2¢ - having done a bit of a back of the envelope...
@TxGambler77
@TxGambler77 Жыл бұрын
I somewhat work in that world dealing with FBO's. I feel like if you are trying to hit multiple locations in a single day, private is the way to go as the 2 hr window of arriving before a commercial flight you can already be at your next location makes all the right sense.

Private jet ownership is hardly ever justified when used "privately". Corporate is different in some cases. But privately, spending USD15-20M on a decent jet, then paying at least USD2M p.a. for its upkeep requires a really good justification - and not just the social game surrounding jet ownership. If you're not doing at least 400 FH/p.a. it is a waste. And for the upkeep alone you can charter a similar plane for a few hundred hours p.a. The economics of ownership just do not add up in the vast majority of cases. Very similar to private yachts, btw - a decent private jet and a smallish superyacht are very similar in their overall lifetime costs. And the main question is: Do you really use it? Does it overall make your life better and more enjoyable?

@@sidesauce Of course he didn't - he's a commie and rejects everything private - notice his choice of words in which he tries to speak for everyone "I think a private aircraft is never a necessity. All bigger airlines are sufficient" - no they aren't sufficient, they're slow, dirty and expensive (for what they are). I'd love to see him use the main airlines to get to many places in short amounts of time that aren't close to large airports or trains (trains are also horribly slow) - this is another reason people have private aircraft - they can get to many places quickly using small airports that airlines are banned from. I'd also love to see him travel 6 countries in one day - no airline will enable this - their schedules are too slow and rigid and their planes are too slow which are also too large to enable this. He also forgot that being crammed in "commercial busses" on actual long-haul trips (Australia - UAE - UK; Australia - Hong Kong - Frankfurt), its horrible being crammed unless you've got a business class ticket (easily $14k - more than usual due to the "2020 thing" and because either of the two routes just mentioned are in the longest haul category (more fuel, staff working longer, etc.)). Business class is slowly disappearing as airlines are chasing every dollar possible which means cramming in more economy seats is their goal; this is making business class tickets harder to get on popular flights, leaving private as the only option. With ticket prices as horrible as they are now, its actually possible to charter a private jet that's needing to get to the same destination as you for less than the cost of a business class ticket.

Private jets are easy enough/cost-effective in Europe/North America. In Asia, FBO fees, overflight permissions/fees etc mean that a flight of a similar distance in Europe will be 2-4x+ in Asia cost-wise. South America isn't as bad as Asia but Africa is worse than all of them.

The finances are only a small part of the equation. Statistically, small aircraft are less safe, typically have crew who are less experienced, and with global warming, smaller aircraft are more subject to unstable weather conditions like clear air turbulence.

I wonder if, for long haul, a good compromise would be a concierge service? For example, London Gatwick and Luton both host the Signature Elite service which, for around £600, drives you to the FBO terminal, processes you through private security and immigration, and then drives you to the aircraft. They have arrangements with BA and, surprisingly, easyJet. (Often thought about trying it with my £29.99 EasyJet flight from London to my home in Scotland, just for the experience!). Just thought that might deal with the "hour and a half immigration line" problem you cited. Overall though, small airports do help. Mine is 10 minutes' drive from the city centre, has parking right outside the terminal and a relatively low throughput. Queues and crowds are rare and you can comfortably go from parking the car to boarding the aircraft in 45 minutes. It has connections to the hubs in both London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schipol, giving a huge choice of onward destinations and airlines.

Flying private for short flights of 1500nm or less is fine or owning your own plane. Turboprop aircraft cost less and are just about as fast as the jets on short flights but also have the advantage of short strip capability. Otherwise commercial long haul jets are far more cost effective and unless you are a billionaire in a G-650 or G-700 it is multi-stop instead of nonstop gate to gate.

There’s also the aspect of added complexity if you don’t want to go the charter route and want to (fractionally) own a plane… You’ve got maintenance to deal with, another depreciating asset. There’s pilot’s wages to deal with. Countless regulations, especially in Europe. And how does all that factor into your tax strategy? Especially if you’re remitting yourself money for your spending and have to pay income tax on all that! Fringe benefits and business expenses do have their limits, after all and getting audited ain’t fun. And you really have to ask yourself: Am I even saving enough time to justify the expense that comes with new headaches? Is the experience really that much more luxurious? Can you abstain from luxuriating for a couple of hours to bag greatly reduced transport expenses in return? If “flexing” 24/7 is already not your thing because you’ve had fewer means for most of your life, flying private might just be a bit distasteful… And are you really saving that much hassle if you have priority boarding, no immigration issues and if you pack savvily enough to just breeze through security? I mean, if you have a Schengen passport and Global entry and you try to avoid the holidays, most of the time, there is not a hassle to be had at the airport! Don’t get me wrong! I see the appeal for large families or groups that can narrow the gap! And I can see it for a hobbyist pilot on shorter stretches. Or for celebrities and politicians for whom being well-known in a sea of people can be an issue. But for a low-profile couple, the upsides barely, if at all outweigh the downsides in most cases…

I have a threshold where I will go private and a background in aviation ops. I will only elect to go private eventually once I can afford my own plane and running costs outright with the necessary range and size to fly my missions without majorly restricting frequency of my journeys. For me, that threshhold is high because I also need longhaul capability and first class is still significantly cheaper on flights of 12h+. For the balance of your life you need to afford that too, because once you go private you won't return.

There is a gap in service for people earning over $1,000,000 but not by enough to really make flying private reasonable. We spend 9 months per year in Europe, but even in the Southern portion of Europe, winters are not really up to our climate standards. Right now, I am in the process of going to Hoi An Vietnam to see if it might be a place winter. I originally looked at going through Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Bangkok and then on to Da Nang. It was going to take 34 hours with long stop overs in each place. I did that one time during COVID from Warsaw to Alanya, Turkey. I was near death by the end of it. So, I took a direct flight to Abu Dhabi, stayed there for two days, then on to Kathmandu where I ended up extending to two weeks. Now I go to Bangkok where I will stay for 8 days and then on to Hoi An. If wintering in SE Asia is our ultimate choice, I would trim that down to one day in each location and take 8 days. Many of these flights don't have business or first class. That would be a problem with one, 15 hour flight. But with 4 or 5 hour flights, it isn't so terrible. Still, it would be better if there was something between commercial and private. The quotes for private around $180K for my wife my personal assistant, our dog and me is really out of my range. We are seriously considering dropping S.E. Asia from a 'Trifecta' rotation simply because there really isn't any comfortable and affordable options for going to and fro. I'd like to see private cabins that can add to the comfort but cost, perhaps $5,000 per passenger. I understand that I would need to work my schedule around less frequent flights. But, moving our itinerary a day or two one way or the other would be perfectly OK. I know that you and I are not the only people looking for better ways to get from Europe to S.E. Asia.

Well first of all, $5k only gets you business class. There is a product on Etihad called “the residence” which is like a private room and runs around $30k but it is not very popular. It’s just more cost efficient for airlines to have business and first class seats, and from the consumer side, it’s not really worth paying 5-10x the price when at the end of the day it’s still a commercial aircraft with limited routes.
