I feel like the bit about sometimes your friends are just your coworkers applies to non-famous situations as well. I've had plenty of "friends" at jobs or even at school or even while having a hobby, that once I left that environment, I never spoke to those people again. I've learned as an adult that a ride or die friendship is so incredibly rare, and that "friends for now" is the norm.
@christycarlsonromano3 жыл бұрын
Ride or die implies no boundaries. Boundaries are important in healthy friendships. There's a give and a take and mutual respect that must exist for the friendship to thrive.

@@christycarlsonromano legitimately, the two longest friendships I have (16yrs and 12yrs, respectively) have lasted this long because of space acting as boundaries. I'm in the UK, one is in Georgia and one is in Oklahoma. Both are married with kids, building and maintaining careers. We talk and text regularly but rarely see each other. And yet, it works BEAUTIFULLY. These two are my lifelong friends, my girls, and they've each become key parts of my self-made family as well. Real friendships are rare AF, but when you do find them, it's a gift beyond measure.

I think media, especially movies and tv series, have contributed to the idea that if you aren't in constant contact with each other and know each others' deepest secrets (and keep them lol), then you aren't true friends and I think that's terrible. In general, I'm what people consider a loner, but have had great friends in the past that have just fallen farther away since I just haven't felt the need to talk to them as much. And I've spent so much time hating myself since I didn't put in the work to maintain the friendship, but then I realize that it shouldn't be "work" to maintain such a thing.

Friends who come into your life for a lifetime, while very few, are the most rewarding and treasured of friendships. Hoping you find some of those lifetime friendships Christy!

Don't be hard on yourself because a lot of the feelings and experiences you described are super relatable even to people who have never been around fame. Sometimes I wouldn't see my friends for weeks because they were absorbed in their own life and just didn't have the capacity to be a part of mine. That's okay! I really found out who my friends were when I got sick. For the last 6.5 years I've been primarily bed bound due to a severe neurological disease. My BEST friends were the first ones to jump ship. Others slowly faded away. When you can't contribute anything to a friendship people leave fast. No one wanted to deal with what I'm going through. I lost my health, my friends, my freedom, my dreams, my jobs, my hobbies all at once. The people who showed up for me were strangers, people I hadn't seen in 10 years, people I only met once, people on Instagram. I deeply appreciate the few that stayed and the ones who drew near when everyone else was leaving. They taught ME how to be a good friend and how to love someone who's hurting. I don't think friendship is give and take or 50%/50%, I think it's a commitment to love people 100% whether they give or not. I find relationships that start 50%/50% often end that way. Not every friendship is worth saving, but I want to love others selflessly and sacrificially like my friends have loved me ❤.

It's funny how in broad-strokes, what you're talking about is almost a universal experience. I remember when I was young, just "wanting to be liked" -- I moved around a lot, so I never had long-term friends. After college, I wound up getting involve with a pretty rough crowd, and eventually realizing "none of these people have my back". I remember having a thought like, "people only have time for you if they want something from you". I relocated and basically started my life over my scratch around 27, and at first I'd get down on myself, wondering how to make friends as an adult. Eventually though, once I started making an effort to get MYSELF straight, I realized I don't have that same "neediness" for friendship that I definitely used to. And really, I think that's a key point; when you become "enough" for yourself.

One important thing to creating a friendship, IMO, is to VOICE how you view the friendship. For example, I've had a "work" friend for 7+ years. It wasn't until recently that we actually both said we view each other as close, inner circle friends that we actually properly became that. I think we just didn't know where exactly we stood. I have other works friends who left and I never talk to, whereas I think if I'd voiced how I viewed them, things would've stuck together better. Sometimes you just don't know until you really know, and that often takes words.

Yes to all of this! I work in the entertainment industry in LA and I can't tell you how many times I hear on set "they are actually a very good/dear friend of mine" when referring to a celebrity that they may have collaborated with once on a project. What keeps this going too is that interview segments on talk shows are dominated by short stories about other "more famous" celebrities rather than about the artist themselves or the project. "He is actually the nicest/most funny/most down-to-earth human" etc. Everyone is going to be the nicest human when you expect them to be an egomaniac and they turn out to be somewhat polite (at least on set) lol. Anyway, it's refreshing to hear an actor's perspective that is genuine, thanks Christy!

Just reminds me to always treat ppl, no matter their 'industry', like normal humans. With compassion and empathy for their unseen struggles. :)

I love this channel. Very genuine and authentic. At the end of the day, being happy/authentic is what matters, forget fame/fortune. Not saying gaining fame/fortune is bad, but it seems it’s easy to forget what’s really important in life. Happiness and real, loving relationships.

I love hearing your thoughts and perspectives on the industry! Respectfully, the only thing I disagree with is just because your time with people is limited to a season of 9 months or a few years depending on the set, doesn't mean those aren't real friendships just because they don't last beyond that season. It's a different kind of friendship that has its value in the time you spend together. Just because it's convenient doesn't mean it isn't real or heartfelt. But that comes from someone who moved around a lot and I have taken the friendships where I found them and valued them while I had them.

The concept of being kindred spirits, but not necessarily having a bond of friendship is so interesting and refreshing to me. I feel I've definitely experienced that and have also been on the end where I think we're closer than we truly are and not understanding why others may not feel the same. Love this!

Christy, I can relate to this! You’re not alone. That’s how I feel about people these days in general. It’s not a celebrity thing. Everyone acts the same exact way. People today just suck. I know I definitely wasn’t there for people in high school. I was too busy dealing with my own mental illness, and it was hard for me to be present for anyone, even myself. People these days don’t even want to talk to me, and I get it. Religion has personally helped me heal, in combo with therapy. The only regret I have was not speaking up sooner about what was bothering me. I kept it bottled inside as a way to protect myself and my family. I felt embarrassed and ashamed to say anything. But I also wish someone would’ve cared enough to say, “hey do you need help?” Maybe I wouldn’t have gotten help at 31, maybe i would’ve gotten help at 15. But can’t do anything about that now.

It must have been really difficult growing up and not being able to forge those really strong bonds you craved as a young person. Celebrity definitely put you in a unique position there. I will say that I don't think friendships that end after you're no longer physically together aren't "real" friendships, but they're just a specific type of friendship (though I suppose that's a difference in semantics, depends on how you define friends). Very common thing to happen to regular folks as well bc most people make friends in school and as we get older or move our priorities change and we grow apart. Some friendships can be lifelong, some are temporary and have a specific purpose that they fulfill before they end. I think a lot of adults are pretty lonely actually because it's really hard to make friends when you don't have outside structures forcing you to spend time together (school or in your case sets). Even for regular folks it takes a lot of time and energy to maintain adult friendships. I'm in grad school right now and I thought that it would be easy to make friends in grad school but it's a whole different ball game from grade school and college. That being said, I'm blessed to have some really amazing long-lasting friendships where we all deliberately put in a lot of time and effort to keep up with each other. The intensity waxes and wanes but the thread is still there. I've had plenty of friendships though that I thought would last forever and they didn't because it's normal to grow apart when you don't have external reasons to be together. And I also know a lot of people who have not been as fortunate as I have been with my relationships.
@Mattyboy-dn4oo3 жыл бұрын
I find that you mature and get older, you start to have a more grounded and better understanding of what makes a friendship. And usually, not many people make the cut. A measure I use for friendships that I have is what value is it adding to your life. If one day for some reason, you and this person you call a friend are not friends anymore, how much will your life be impacted by it? It sounds extreme, but as you get older, you have more responsibilities and less free time. With that said, if you are going to spend this limited time with others, it should ideally be with someone you care about and a friendship that adds meaning to your life. There are different levels of friends and I found that I began to understand that once I got out of high school and during quarantine. Now, I'm comfortable saying that while I don't have a lot of friends, I'm proud to say that the ones that I do have are the ones that are the most valuable to me and the ones that I'm thankful to have in my life. I really enjoyed these types of videos and am excited to hear more about your perspective on life.

I really respect and appreciate the level of introspection that you have done in your life and learned how your experiences have shaped you over time. Even just listening to you speak evokes this almost meditative feeling. You evaluated, you learned, and you allowed yourself the space to grow from it all rather than just sinking into the existential limbo that is Hollywood. Much love and respect to you.
