I never saw this point of view when I watched the film, BUT i completely understand where your coming from. I feel if they changed the story by having merida go against tradition like she does, but doing something brave by proving to her family by going on an adventure to be BRAVE and proving to everyone a woman should be free to do what ever she wants and in turn on the way of the adventure she grows more mature and wise and rounded
@idonthaveanose7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I honestly just think the story needed some tweaking, personally. It's a shame as there's a lot I do like about it.

she actually do something brave, she confronts her mom for first time in the archery scene, but after that the movie history is so weak.
@jesyheller1997 ай бұрын
I guess the big difference between Merida and Jasmin is that Jasmin was allowed to choose her suitors. The frolicking in the river is to show Merida that her mom can have fun, and the speech shows the mom that Merida can handle responsibility and will be fine on her own to choose a good suitor(like Jasmin was allowed). Find me a teenager who hasn't thrown a tantrum over something ridiculously stupid. Now apply that same energy to a teenage girl being told she is being offered as a prize in a contest because tradition. Surprise you get an emotional teenager making impulsive choices and not thinking about consequences. The moral for both mother and daughter is that you cannot change who a person is, but you can find a compromise through empathy . The mom has to accept Merida needs freedom, and Merida has to accept that she is a princess with responsibilities. Personally I think she is a good role model because she is the most like a real teenager, is dealing with an issue that can apply to most teenage girls(stalemate with a parent), and learning a lesson that applies to real life(empathy/compromise). Edit: It also highlights that you can make a horrible mistake, but if you feel remorse, try to make amends, and try to be a better person, you can be. One terrible mistake doesn't have to define who you will be. The important thing is you learn your lesson and grow from it.
@idonthaveanose7 ай бұрын
Fair points, although I'd personally argue that Merida's betrothal wasn't so much to do with her aptitude as a princess but more so to do with upholding tradition. She would also still have responsibilities whether she was married or not. Teenagers do throw tantrums, but going so far as to feed her mom a cake without knowing what it will do to change her seems overly mean-spirited to me. I do still see your points though. The story just doesn't really resonate with me I'm afraid. 🙂

2:34 that’s actually why I liked the movie, because it isn’t really a disney priness story it has a priness protagonist but looks at the trope in a different way. Just look at the character design of Merida. Unlike a typical Disney princess she has a body type of a normal young girl, her hair is messy and throughout the movie she mainly wears a simple comfortable dark green dress. I understand your criticisms that’s just why I liked the movie

This kind of pioneered the generational differences storyline that Disney would use in the future. In Merida's defense, there is a character arc to go through where as people would call her a Mary Sue if she was too perfect. It's also worth noting that the original director, Brenda Chapman, was replaced by Mark Andrews mid way through production. Hence why the story is disjointed.

This movie does feel like it's the victim of being rushed, I feel it was supposed to come out in 2013, but since Pixar noticed that any future productions after Brave were going to take a lot longer, and worried that without a yearly release in 2012 they might fall behind, especially since Disney were starting to outshine them with Tangled and the upcoming Wreak-it-Ralph, so they rushed it into theatres without having time to really perfect the script, since it does feel very messy It doesn't know if it wants to be another Brother Bear, a Shakespearian style drama or a more grounded melodrama

Personally, I have a strong preference for Brave, drawn to its captivating storyline, rich character development, and stunning animation; however, when it comes to discussing the best movies, I must say that Ant Bully truly stands out as one of the top contenders, captivating audiences with its imaginative narrative, endearing characters, and heartfelt message about friendship and acceptance, making it a hidden gem deserving of recognition among the pantheon of animated classics.

To be honest, I am indifferent to this movie. Sure the story and plot is so unnecessarily pompous and confluted; and the main female protagonist isn't anything speculator or progressive when it comes to female empowerment because it just follows the same tired "I want to be different" trope Disney princesses tend to follow. But it isn't the worst movie ever. Yet it did so good financially at the box office. Guess you can say this movie was a BRAVE financial success.

I think this film could've worked it Meridas wish altered the timeline so that she never existed and no one recognizes her. But she would still be allowed to exist within it so that the protaginist would have a goal. Merida meets Ellinor but as a prodegy without manners and alot more disrespectful. They both meet in a storm and Ellinor treats Merida as a joke since once again, they never met in this timeline.

I agree changing her mother with a spell from a witch and not even knowing what the cake she gives her will do to her mother, did she even care enough about her mother's welfare to even think about that? It appears not. She caused a lot of trouble. Not a nice person.

I can’t believe your actually gaslighting Merida saying “throughout she’s complaining” She’s a 16 year old and her mother is forcing her into marriage without her consent there are a lot reviewers like you saying “she’s selfish and entitled because she doesn’t get what she wants” I don’t care if this is your opinion it’s not ok to frame a character that wants to force a child in a non consensual relationship I hope you never have children in your future she never intended to turn her mom into a bear she just wanted her to change her mind about marriage like saying she having a hissy fit like wtf
@idonthaveanose4 ай бұрын
Um, that's pretty uncalled for. This is an animated movie we're talking about. I get the reasons why she's complaining, but her actions against her mom are extremely disproportionate to me. As I say in the video, I get the reasons why she acts the way she does, but narratively it doesn't work. Regardless of whether you agree with Elinor's views, Merida was very nearly responsible for her demise despite the fact that her mom clearly cares for her. There's protesting against her mom's views and then there's actively seeking out a way to 'change' her, ignorant of what the consequences might be.
