The guy from from Chaos Fragrances was a genuinely nice young dude who loves fragrances and wanted to make videos about them. Then he become 'a KZbinr'. And it all turned into daily redundant, repetitive Top 10 List. When you start to make a living out of it's all about racking up views and play the algorithm. The content becomes soulless.

I’ve noticed a dichotomy in my hobbies - either I’m creating, or I’m consuming. And honestly creating tends to have more of a wholesome life force to it. Fragrance is very consumption-oriented, which unfortunately lends itself to the sort of bland and corrupt content you pojnt out so well. I think my favorite subgenre of fragrance content involves perfumery itself - how to understand ingredients and maybe even head to the kitchen with a milligram scale and some pipettes and vials. Sam Macer is a favorite here. Relatedly, even on the less technical end, I see a gap. How do you smell and describe fragrances yourself? How do you build a discovery set for a loved one based on their own fragrance history? I did this for my lady for our anniversary (along with a handmade hardwood case for the set) and she said it was the most thoughtful gift she’s ever gotten. Goodness it would be nice for even 5% of “pantydropper” discourse to be replaced with this kind of creative thing.

mr smelly keeping it real! honestly it's refreshing when people speak their mind. if people don't say things that could potentially upset others (even as far as disliking certain popular fragrances) it normally means they're creating some type of facade. this is the thing with the online world, you can create this image of yourself, often very elaborate but if you ever come face to face with these people it's all too obvious. the fragrance scene is especially bad for these sort of folk, no doubt. even when certain folk appear on a livestream their appearance will be calculated in a limited manner as to not give too much away that would break the illusion.

Hey man. Long time follower here. I started watching your channel and stuck with it mainly because of the way you reviewed fragrances. Also, you always covered fragrances outside of the 'best sellers' that most KZbinrs recommended. It never felt your videos are trying to sell me something via affiliate links or you are making money out of this. This is why I am still around and I respect you and your work. Also.. Bois Du Portugal was the fragrance that started my entire journey! Only real G's like that stuff.

Agreed. I DO NOT subscribe to any KZbin fragrance influencers. Having videos flood my recommendations on a daily basis was driving me crazy. There are only a handful of regulars I'll look up every so often, none of which are the top reviewers.

Honestly, I haven’t watched this channel for a couple of years either, but it is the only channel I turned back to. I quite like some of the list videos but lately even they have been getting extremely predictable, then again the viewers probably have too, just look at the view counts for videos with 'compliment monster' or 'most complimented' in the title (is the algorithm to blame?) 🙄

Over the years I have watched many fragrance channels, and I have it down to 3 only now. Gent Scents…The Fragrance Apprentice…and against all odds MrSmelly. Ultimately I think Dan and I have similar interests, a sense of style and class. I like watches, fragrance as art and memory association. This hobby started for me through wet shaving and classic aftershaves. Watches are just something I always enjoyed and I am so glad I tossed my Fitbit and went back to proper wrist watches. You be you Dan, your authentic in my eyes and your content is still interesting to me. On a side note, wore Brut to work yesterday and an employee called me out on it (just identified it) and it goes to show that the DNA still stands out. Cheers

Being 55 I primarily only wore three fragrances, Aramis, the original Polo and Drakkar Noir. All very similar to one another. I came across the Gents Scents channel one day and I had no idea there were so many different types of fragrances. I really like Justin Copeland from Stay Fresh Productions. He’s very chill and has great interactions with his subscribers. I appreciate that because these channels are making money from subscribers. I don’t watch many channels anymore. I have a better understanding of fragrances now and I think a lot of these guys who have fragrance channels are only in it for the free fragrances that they get sent. It’s hard to give an honest review if you might get cut off from fragrance manufacturers.

Nice, I grew up loving Polo Green. Though I will say those three scents you had are not similar at all. Definitely 80 (70's) powerhouses. Justin was pretty good, I got some great suggestions off his channel. Once he started consistently getting into the more expensive scents I just lost interest.

I’ve noticed Chaos and Gents seem to purposefully do 12 minute + videos and I’ve heard that’s what gets the most ad revenue. It all feels kind of soulless. And the female accounts are dragging in male views like the twitch streaming gamer girls. I’m into fantasy football and it’s the same over there. Seems a lot of online niches follow the same pattern.

I only watch George (Frag apprentice) for his quirky, different style of cinematic content. I love Wafts from the Loft also. You might say they don't have charisma - but they have a lot of insights on scents and ingredients and so on - that you can't really get from any other channel. So I love them for that. Gents Scents, Jeremy, all those channels - zzz 💤

I have actually unsubscribed to a lot of channels, and I'm sure I'll unsubscribe to more soon. I'm kinda sick of clicking on a video and being talked down to because of what fragrance I choose to wear. There's far too much hypocrisy and contradictions in "the fragrance community" now. "You're basic and unsophisticated if you think spending $300 on a bottle is too much. All these bottles were given to me by the company but they're totally worth the price for you to spend on them, and just ignore the fact that I didn't pay for mine." Or "There are no rules in the fragrance game, except you better not be basic and wear a popular fragrance. Because every single person outside is wearing that exact one fragrance. Even though most people don't actually wear fragrances, they're all wearing that one." Or "Wear fragrances for yourself. Don't worry about what other people think. But don't put on more than 3 sprays or the people around you won't like it." 🤦🏼‍♂️

Oh, one thing about being an expert. In fairness, a professional taster (not far from scent, they are related) are hired because they have an above average sense of taste. I was approached because I often would note something “strange” in a food and identify it, which often impressed chefs. Not everyone has that ability, and I don’t think every expert necessarily has the nose to claim such, while others may in fact have that gift, but don’t realize it. It’s hard to say “who” is an expert, but I do know those that have aided me in blind buys, and those who failed horribly, Curly sent me down the wrong path more than once, so I have zero faith in her top picks, outside the ones everyone is aware of.

I like fragrance apprentice, fragrance room, and to a degree real Men real style. They all have something good going for them. Fragrance apprentice has some of the most interesting videos on fragrance. Fragrance room has some of the most genuine takes. And real and real styles thing is all about style, fragrance is just a part of what he does. Almost forgot Aaron Terrence hughes. Particularly because he is anal and pedantic, but he's actually good at it :)
