Yes - I definitely think it can be fun to discuss 'what goth is,' but at a certain point it can get a bit like beating a dead horse and it can surely make things not so enjoyable. Whenever I've tried to explain it to people who've asked, I go through the usual bullet points, but inevitably, I just end up saying 'goth is, at its best, a mystery.' Glad to hear your thoughts on the matter ☺️

I really think that back in the 80s when all this amazing sub culture was growing and finding its place, it was based in FREEDOM. Appart from wicklepickers, spiked deathhawks and DIY black outfits... Everybody wanted to find their place in a ''dark mood ambient'', not all about ''true goths'' and ''fake goths''. I think that i know who is a fake goth, is somebody that thinks that knows everything about goth. Whe the reality is that this amazing sub culture put all of us together in a different way. I can be goth and listen to black metal, Nina Simone, 2Pac or Bauhaus. :) LOVE YOUR CHANNEL :)

my favorite is how, in the 90s, the argument was "ugh, cyber/industrial/people who like marilyn manson/the crow/what have you is so not goth, it's so fake goth, they're all posers, not like Real, True Goth!" and now you see so many people going "ugh, tumblr goth subcultures/MCR/goths who incorporate street style/what have you is so not goth, it's so fake goth, they're all posers, not like the Real, True Goth of the past, which includes cyber, industrial, people who like marilyn manson, and the crow!" because that's what's always been in the scene for them. but yeah, IMO goth is at least partially about creativity, and an important and interesting part is how people interpret the nebulous concept of goth to fit into their own lives.

Who talks about one side to their personality all the time? People are allowed their own individual interests outside of what is stereotypically goth. It is fun to hear certain discussions as someone wanting to learn more, but I definitely agree with you. Why can't we leave some things subjective and keep an air of mystery? I think it's based around music, goth came from music. When post punk came around, there was no exact fashion. That formed later on. So I think if you respect the music that started the subculture, or even better yet, listen to it, then you're goth. Of course it's about self expression too but could someone at least find one goth band they like?? or somehow respect it and make sure they're educated about the scene and history? I'm tired of the history being erased just so people on Tumblr and Instagram can feel better and edgy when they wear black lipstick.

Fernandanatac hi (I know it doesn’t look like it from my profile pic but) I’m a goth person who got into the subculture a little bit ago (2 years ago maybe) Kai decadence made an excellent video on this subject matter about goth music I’ll try to link it for you to check it out for yourself because music is the core foundation/fundamentals of the goth scene however there are many waves and sub genres of goth music to get into. 😁 Also goth don’t only listen to goth music..we listen to a variety of music (I love the weekend, gorillaz and so many more) but it’s our love for the music that classifies and identifies us as goths 🖤🖤🖤 (As well as the literature too)

I personally think why some people like goth discussion videos or find them helpful is because understanding can be one step closer to not being abhorred by 'normal' people. In LeahMouse's video 'What Goth is Not', she tells an anecdote about an elderly lady asking her what goth was because she was worried about her grandson who was apparently getting into goth stuff, and she reassured her that it was not something that would be harmful, and she also makes the point that a lot of the stereotypes are just traits that any human can have, goth or not. The mystique, I love personally, but I just want to be able to respectfully explain to my family as to what I am and what I'm not, and have them understand or at least accept me. That being said, I don't think you have to make videos like that because we have a lot of those on KZbin in general already, and I love how you run your channel anyways. I love rational and respectful discussions but people on KZbin can be... yeah. It's definitely understandable as to why you don't make those sorts of videos or discussions. And also, I like the nickname Belfry bats. It has a sort of nostalgia to it :3 Cheers!

I think it's a nostalgia thing for me. I was the kid sitting alone at lunch for the beginning of the school year and the goths(7 of them) invited me to their table and they were the nicest funniest people. It was confusing for everyone, including the teachers, no one got why the goth kids insisted on having me with them all the time and switched classes to be with me. I get being labeled as a hippie (dreads tend to make people automatically assume that's what you are)....yes I live the lifestyle but, I have a dark side to me too. I don't try to label people just because, I believe, no one person is one certain thing. I think most people have a little bit of everything mixed up in there. Some may lean more towards one way, some may not lean towards any way. It's just a preference of what you want. Labels are silly and, I think, they make some people feel like they're obligated to do what the label is insinuating, you know what I mean? Those are just my thoughts on labels and stereotypes lol.

I identify as a goth because it's the easy answer to "so... what are you interests, then?" It's an umbrella-term for my preferred aesthetic in how I present myself to the world, the sorts of movies and books and TV-series and to some extent music I enjoy the most, and how I choose to decorate and / or embellish my home. And that's about it. I do have opinions regarding whether or not one should be at least aware of the subculture's roots and origins, though - but I think that goes for all (sub)cultures: Know your roots, your history and what your culture's origins consisted of.

I love this video because you just want to enjoy being you and letting us experience that without having to go into deep conversations about the technical aspects of it all. Your channel and most importantly you are a refreshing perspective on just showing that in the end we're all just people, no matter how we express ourselves. I mean the first video I ever saw of yours was when you did the eminem rap. Growing up in a small town and not seeing as much regarding goth culture, all I've ever really seen is the stereotyped portrayals of goths on television and other forms of media. Most media would just have goths hate the world, wear black, and not really have any personality or depth of character. Seeing you do that eminem rap made me have so much respect for you because you shattered this image of how I see Goths and eventually in your videos my view on gothic culture as I whole. This is why I like you so much and why I first started watching your channel. I look very punk or goth (depending on my mood) and always worried I would be judged by people who identify with those subcultures even though I don't label myself either. It got to the point where I would want to flirt with a cute alternative looking girl but would just assume that when I can't tell the difference between metal/heavy metal/punk/rock music that she will judge me. I totally agree. Goth is such a beautiful magical thing that has become more of a lifestyle and group of people that accept and love all the spooky scary things in life. When people judge others in the subculture by saying things like "you're not goth if you don't wear this thing or listen to this music" it destroys what I think should be the core message of gothic living (or rather dying) and that is that we accept all that this world has to offer by not shying away from the darkness. We accept and love the things that "normal people" push away. So when you push away someone that's labeling themselves personal as a goth even though you don't think they are goth, that destroys what all alternative lifestyles where built upon, and that's acceptance.

I'm almost 18 and I live in a kind of small town in Australia and it's been hell trying to figure out what subcultures I do and don't belong to, and finally I've decided who cares :) the proper labels for whatever blend of genres I am is quite a mouthful and provides more questions than answers, and my taste in clothes and music changes daily with the only consistency being all black everything, lots of spikes, lace, and chains.

You know. I don't really remember, how or when I get here, to you channel, but this is one of the best thing that happened to me in my life. (It's in the best 10 things) I do not consider myself a goth, or at least I'm not that one, who others look at, and say "oh, he is a goth person". I'm not listening gothic music (okay, maybe sometimes gothic metal, but that's all), I'm not wearing gothic cloths (I more likely wearing rocker things - if i can say that - but I like red, brown or even white ones too, so my closet is kinda mixed) but the reason I'm still here and listening to your lovely voice is because I found peace, and this is one of the most valuable thing in life. I little spot, a safe place, where I can be who I am without the fear of exclusion, labelling or hatred.

Love this video! I agree with this sentiment you have with communities and labels like this. I'm not goth but I love metal music (not saying it's a goth thing because it isn't despite both being able to combine/overlap pretty well e.g. gothic metal). The same thing happens mostly on online forums or other social media where metal fans congregate. The mentality of "That's not real metal!" , and "This is true metal" and "If you don't dress like this or do this or that you aren't a real metalhead! You're a poser!". It's rather poisonous and one of the reasons I don't go to fb or reddit metal fan groups or metal-archives (a site I don't recommend looking at). This condescending, smarter/better-than-thou style gatekeeping and label crazy personalities take the fun and magic out of things. It's no surprise that there's elitism in not only goth and metal, but every fanbase of anything ever. Those people make me shake my head. I totally agree with you, be yourself and ignore labels. Keep up the work, Black Friday! ^^

I wear flowers and some bright colours, I love cats and fluffy things, and I stopped listening to metal years ago. I still identify as goth/alternative, even if I don't fit into other peoples box of "what goth/alternative" looks like. I feel like as you grow older there's less pressure from mature people to follow rules in order to apply certain labels to yourself. Give no fucks, and live your life how you want to live it, as long as you're not hurting others or yourself.

One of the reasons that I love your channel so much is that you are so positive, and centered around providing information without a ton of bias. You are also very grounded and approachable. I think the difference between what you do, and the behavior that you're describing in this video, is that you talk about YOUR experience in the Goth subculture. I'm a normal and don't dress up as anything alternative but if I met you in real life I would probably still stand out cuz I'm a Malay Muslim who wears the hijab. I really love you though and your style. I think you're cool af! I have been subscribed to you for about a year already I think. I have always felt happy watching your videos because you are so open about people being goth (if you like the fashion but not the music, if you like the music but don't want to wear the fashion, etc). There seems to be a lot of "goth overlords" within the subculture. I found this out through trying to research what the subculture is all about. I don't identify as goth nor am I trying to be labeled as such. I am however darkly inclined and am drawn to the dark aesthetic.
