"You are not a cinephile or a film fan if you are only buying a film for the shiny packaging." I agree 1000% with this statement!! I think this whole obsession with packaging to be completely stupid. Collecting movies should be all about the actual MOVIES!! Those who collect for the pretty pictures on cardboard should be collecting bubble gum cards instead.

I actually have uniformity in my small collection, to the point that I cut the cover sheet on my DVD’s, and fit them into a clear “blu ray sized” case. I also toss any hard cardboard covers, like on my Blu-rays or 4ks. So the end effect is…even, clear=dvd, blue=Blu ray, black=4k Anything that does not fit neatly into the order, I do NOT want in my collection. Box sets? NO! Steel books? NO! Multi-movie packs? No! Let he said…it’s about the movie. So, whatever it takes to make my collection look perfectly uniform…I will do it. Edit: His collection triggers my OCD

"I don't give a shit about the packaging." Amen to that brother. The more standard and basic the case and art are, the better for me. I can sleeve up the art and DVD/blu ray in a thin paper sleeve and sheet protector and put the basic plastic case in a bankers box and store it off in the basement and have a collection that does not take up all the room in my living quarters. As someone who grew up in a time when you couldn't own movies at all, when I had to go to actual theaters to see old movies like Citizen Kane or whatever, there was nothing to take home with you but your memory. Just HAVING the movie is special to us oldsters who couldn't own things like this. A different perspective perhaps.

I generally opt for the most streamlined packaging - the exception being the awful all cardboard box sets. A few years ago I got the complete box sets of SOPRANO'S and THE SHIELD - never again, both came with the cardboard packaging that's very fragile and damages disks.

Im actually really OCD about the Physical acpect of my collection. I primarily collect blu rays, here in the U.S. theres 2 types of blu ray cases, 1st is the Elite Jewel case with a sleak design and the blu ray logo is stamped at the top those make up mabye 75% or releases. The 2nd is what i call Embroidered cases, the are a more boxy design with a latch on the side and the blu ray logo is etched into the case. I prefer the Elite Jewel as its what makes up most of releases, seeing the 2 types of cases screws with my OCD i have a whole bucket of problems 30 movies I need to buy replacement cases for because i prefer the Elite case. I also dont buy box sets or multi film packs i feel like it looks more presentable to have each film in its own case on the shelf. Everyone has their quarks and preferences i like my collection to be my own and feel unique.

I agree. The film has become secondary to the extras and eye candy. It's actually driving prices up and is discouraging people who find it financially impractical to buy media. It doesn't make sense to spend $40-80 a month on a couple of films when you can spend $30-50 and get multiple services and access to thousands. You can also access them through your phone and don't have to pay for a player. I love hard media and watch 90% of my films on disc. But I also know that fewer people are going to want to buy a movie if they have to spend $30-50 for it because of all the bells and whistles and all they want to do is watch the movie. What is making it worse are all those telling others, "Well, unless you purchase a $3000 television and a $1500 player and only see the film on 4K with HDR and Atmos, you aren't really seeing the movie." Yeah, that elitist dumb butt mentality won't chase people off and contribute to hard media's downfall. Something has to change if we are going to extend the life of hard media.

Or, "If you're not seeing it streaming with your volume maxed out and a screen that extends practically halfway around the world, and if you don't let the explosions and other sounds practically wreck your eardrums, you're not getting the full experience"-- I think that could be another way of putting it.

@@bmasters1981 Brilliant! I'm into music much more than movies, but the same principle can be applied to the "audiophiles" who go on about their thousands of dollars worth of analog equipment. In the end when consuming media the main question to ask is "Did you enjoy the experience?" YOU are the one watching or listening not someone else, so who cares what the high and mighty so called "experts" say.

I really only have more than one copy of a movie if I have it on both dvd and bluray. Why keep the dvd if I have the bluray? Sometimes there are different extras - but mostly due to having 3 portable dvd players, so if I ever have to spend time in hospital, or if my blu ray players pack in, I have something to watch on them.

Pedro, amen! I agree with you. I don't give 2 shits if a DVD comes in a shiny bookcase or a steel book!! All I'm interested in is the frigging movie!!! If the DVD comes with extras, great. I started my DVD collection in 2001. About 99% are in standard disc format. I've added about 15 Blu Ray discs to my collection since 2022. I've bought one 4K disc & that was by accident (I failed to read the fine print because the 4K marking/stamp wasn't on the box). I'm very late to the game, when it comes to Blu Ray. I upgraded to an All Region Blu Ray DVD player in 2022. The company where I bought the Blu Ray player also has a 4K player available but I'm waiting for the price to come down. I only have one VHS tape that I truly want to buy on DVD; unfortunately, it will never become available on DVD because it's a ballet, 1977's Giselle starring Mikhail Baryshnikov; another ballet you will NEVER see on either VHS or DVD is 1967's A Midsummer Night's Dream starring Suzanne Farrell. Out of all of the wonderful niche DVD sites like Arrow, Cauldron, Criterion, Deep Discount, 88 Films, Indicator, Grindhouse, Shameless, Shout, etc...you'll never see a lot of sites devoted to the cultural arts; so far, the only sites I could find are Opus Arte and Met Opera Shop.

I’m baffled at how many movies some of these KZbinrs buy there’s no way they watch all of them either. It’s like it’s a collecting thing (but just to own or perhaps just to keep their channel interesting) …vs buy to watch and enjoy… I bought a portable bluray player just to keep up… carry it around like an iPad. It’s amazing because I don’t have enough time to be sitting infront of the telly all day. Packaging is cool but I agree more than anything else you said… I don’t really care about the packaging as long as I have a copy. If I can get a copy with a slip ..great but I don’t care.

I see your point and I agree with you with on a lot of what you said. I’ve been collecting movie since DVDs launched. For me personally, I don’t care much about the box and the packaging. I just want to experience the movie the best way I can and honestly, I know a lot of collectors are going to be annoying with what I’m about to say. Anybody buying steel book and paying almost double is dumb. Just buy the regular edition the disc is the same. Also very rarely I do upgrade my favorite movies to the next best format from DVD to 4K or Blu-ray to 4K.

Whilst some points you raise are certainly fair I feel it is very much down to the individual rather than there being one _correct_ answer. I don't buy movies I don't want to own but I certainly enjoy the 'collecting' aspect as well as the watching aspect of the physical media hobby; if I only cared about the movie itself I'd stream not buy a physical copy... and being able to look at and hold a physical copy is part of the experience for me. Obviously I agree with "Don't buy a film if you don't like it just for the packaging" (though then there's the complete seies in a franchise problem, I confess) but I still say why can't some people enjoy both? I'm certainly not buying for the packaging before I do a video on an SE or steelbook, I'm buying because I want the movie but I *also* get something from the packaging. I would also say some of the Limited Editions you're dismissing, *Night of the Demon* for one, come with informative booklets/books with essays on the film and the processes behind it... things you say you _are_ interested in. Of course whether or not the additional behind the scenes essays and interviews, not transferred to video, but available in a written format are actually worth the extra money the Limited Edition costs are for you, or each person, to decide, but saying such subjects interest you then dismissing Editions that are the only way to see them seems rather too 'simplistic hardline' against _all_ Limited Editions... *why* aren't you sitting down to read the books? That sounds like someone not with the attitude of a cinephile 🤣 Ones that add posters and postcards then charge significantly more than those items are worth it's certainly just whether you're into the packaging a lot as well as the movie itself but ones with cinema information extras... not so much. As an aside, some of my videos concentrate on packaging for the simple reason that the vast majority of people who are going to spend their own hard earned cash on a physical release know about the movie and that they like it (or are pretty sure they will) so my opinions of it won't and shouldn't and won't hold much, if any, weight. Therefore the only question about whether it'll be worth it *FOR SOME PEOPLE WHO APPRECIATE THE WHOLE PACKAGE, NOT **_JUST_** THE MOVIE* is what comes with the disc so they can judge for themselves whether it's worth the extra outlay over a regular release... or worth waiting a year for a regular release without the limited packaging to get it cheaper.

The Arrow version of Waterworld isn't the best example for this video haha, cause if you didn't get the "fancy" limited edition you wouldn't be getting the Ulysses Cut ;) Other then that... YES! the movie should always come first, but the "fancy" packaging is (like it or not) also a MAJOR factor in keeping physical media alive... Specially for boutique labels and if it didn't matter then there wouldn't be such a ting as steelbooks. I personally don't care about slipcovers etc for catalog titles, but I do like a good limited edition release from any of my favorite labels. You say "You're not a cinephile if you are only buying a film for the shiny packaging." and that's fine... I have a saying too "You're not a true cinephile if you're not region free" so I get it, we can't all agree on everything.

From a broad perspective, my thoughts are consistent with yours. Slipcovers, posters, "art cards", and extraneous nonsense (the shot glasses in you Dusk 'Til Dawn set is a perfect example) are things for which I have very little use for. If included: Cool, I guess, but certainly not going out of my way/spending more for. The one exception in your examples are the booklets and true books. Those items I will spend up on (obvious qualification is assuming I care about the movie/filmmaker/genre/etc). Have no problem justifying the additional cost for the Indicator sets because of that. Needless to say (but obviously, I am anyway...) that is becaue I read them and they enhance my experience with the film in some way. If someone is never going to read them, than yeah - it's rather silly to spend up for that.

sometimes the packaging is the only real difference. Companies (that i love) like Vinegar Syndrome, famous for eye-catching packaging, raise questions about whether the price justifies the content quality. Ultimately, advocating for informed choices based on content enriches the collection experience.

A lot of what I see from people on KZbin shopping for movies is "it didn't have the slipcover, so I had to pass". 🙄 To me, it's always in this order of importance: having the movie, having the best quality of the transfer, extended or alternate cuts, special features then packaging. If it's something I really like and have trouble getting I wouldn't care if it's just a disc. Extras can be cool, but it has to be unique and for a movie I really like. For example, was going to pick up the 4k of Reservoir Dogs and paid $5 extra for the steel book that had the removable ear because I'm a huge Tarantino fan and I love the movie. As for the titles on spines of multidisc sets, I'm mixed on this one. Aesthetically it's nice to not have the clutter but these sets don't always have all the movies from the series. From their viewpoint they want to sell, and they need to advertise exactly what the customer will get from a quick view on a shelf. Getting to be less of a need for that these days though. BTW, we all know you got the From Dusk Til Dawn boxset for that poster of Salma Hayek!

I'd say over 95% are packageless aside from the cds. My collector friend thinks I''m mental - but I live in a small one bedroom flat so don't have room for thousands of movies in their full packaging - and as you've stated before, there really isn't that much sell on value these days (and I have no intention of selling) so I'm fine with this. Romero also had his original budget cut which I think is evident in the final movie. At least some of his ideas from day were realised in Land Of The Dead.

I do care about packaging, but it means little to me unless the film has a proper restoration. Picture quality has always been paramount for me even back when I started buying dvds in the mid 2000s, so when a movie has a new version which looks better than ever before, in a genre I like; I buy it. Yes, I’ve double dipped a lot in the last five years, but I’m a sucker for new restorations and films looking the best they can ever look; it’s an addiction!!

Get a grip. Physical media can be about both the content and the aesthetics of the presentation. No one has to look at the movie poster to enjoy the movie, or to clarify: nobody has to buy a printed program about the movie at the theater if they don't want to - but I always do - and you'd probably be surprised how much roadshow movie programs are worth as years go by. So go for the perks if you want to, but don't worry about it if you don't. The rant about the movie titles on the box spine of the STAR TREK collection was hilarious (as in bad-movie hilarious).

Okay so this may be ignorant of me but maybe the perspective of an "outsider" can help. So I don't care about collectors editions and any of that crap. I'm very much a "function over style" person in almost anything. I don't really get why people still collect movies in general. The only thing that changes is you have it physically but have to pay far more for it. Why not just go for a streaming platform? I guess it's understandable if you can't find those behind the scenes and extras down there and you really care for those. Anyway the vast majority of people who watch movies don't care for the extras and they also just watch stuff through streaming services. Now here comes my point, physical movie media is dying, it is dying because almost nobody buys physical copies as the streaming platforms are just superior in every way (except extras). Therefor the only people still buying them physically are collectors (again and I guess extras people), which is a very small group of movie consumers. So why would they make so many different versions? The vast majority of costs from a movie is the making of it. If you can sell a movie in a plastic case for idk, 10 bucks, and 5 bucks goes to the movie producer which covers those costs, 3 bucks goes to shipping and stocking and whatnot than they make 2 bucks profit right? Now add a nice paper cover around this case and sell it for 15 bucks, cover costs you what, 5 cents? You've just turned your 2 dollar profit into 6.95 dollars, more than tripling it. So at that point even if you only sell half as many movies, you still make more profit. TL;DR: Physical movie purchases are so small, they make far more money from collectors editions compared to normal plastic cases.

You raise some valid points, however to say that streaming is superior in every way is actually way off the mark. When you stream something,.the files are compressed, which in turn lowers the resolution of a film, it can even cause audio issues. With a physical disc you're getting the film as it was intended to be seen and heard. Now leaving the the extras out, how many times have you wanted to watch a film but its not on any of the streaming sites? With a physical copy of a film, it's right there, you can watch it instantly, no faffing about, scrolling through lists of films. I agree that discs are on their way out and it 100% is a collectors/niche market now but streaming is hugely unreliable. Look at what disney did with Crater, it was on D+ for 1 month before it was pulled and shelved, had it had a physical.relase,.People would have been able to see it.

Sure I do see your point but it boils down to my argument of saying that the vast majority of people don't care if there's a bit of loss of quality from the sound or the image. The superiority of streaming services is that you don't need to get out of your house, and it comes packed with content, including series and documentaries, sometimes news and whatnot (I'm not from the USA but news/local programs are watchable on a streaming site here). It's convenient, doesn't require any storage space, you can watch from multiple devices and the most important one of all: it's CHEAPER. For instance, I got amazon prime which has prime video, for an amazing deal of 25 bucks/year. I can get 1, maybe 2 movies for that price. Anyway I do have another point, which is to point out you own multiple copies of certain movies to get them in the best quality possible. So they don't exactly last you forever. 4k is coming up, 3d is coming up (I mean sure we've said that for 15 years), who knows what's next. My point is, streaming sites will change their movie format to up date to the highest norm if possible, my VHS from 20 years ago is stuck in 480p. And yeah I agree sometimes I want to watch a certain movie and it's not on a streaming site which is annoying, but most people that watch movies just want to watch a movie, not a specific classic. And with hundreds of them available on most streaming sites, they won't run out of stuff to watch anytime soon, and when they do they can move over to a different platform. I think a few years from now those collector editions are the only thing that'll stop the physical movie industry from crumbling down, for a while at least because it's unavoidable to completely die out. Mind you, nobody purchases a dvd player anymore. @@CineApocalypseOnline

@@taserrr The more or less only thing streaming is "superior" in over physical media is how easy it is to watch and that's why it's killing of physical media (cause people are lazy, but physical is by no means dead, there's a reason why some studios are goin back to it) sure there's other smaller reason such as you don't have stuff taking up alot of space, but that's about it.. It really comes down to why you value the most... It's no streatch to say that the younger generation do more streaming (they don't really care about preserving movies or even giving a movie a 2nd watch) and then you'll more often then no find that it's the older generations that still cling onto physical media (like myself and I wouldn't wanna go streaming only cause then I would miss out on wayyyyyy to many movies I would wanna watch) and "NO" physical media will NEVER completly die off, as long as there's collectors out there, so will physical media... Just look at vinyl, heck even VHS is seeing a growth on popularity again (which I personally don't get either, but eyyy so it be). Ofc nobody buys a DVD player anymore, why would they when both Blu-ray and 4k dedicated players can play DVDs too?
@taserrr
@taserrr 7 ай бұрын
Nobody is buying DvD players, Blu-Ray player, or 4k dedicated players either. And with nobody, I mean 99% of the population. DvD players were in 99% of homes 15 years ago. You can't state physical media will never truly die, when it's almost dead already. I don't know what DvD sales are at compared to 15 years ago, but I'd highly doubt they're still at 10% of what it was. Also you completely moved over the fact that streaming sites are far cheaper than purchasing dvds, and that the quality will change. I'm not sure about you, but I've never watched a VCR the past 15 years, and I won't watch it any time soon. Same will happen to DvD soon, I haven't watched one in years. Anyway, in the end all that will be left will be collector's editions. You may find it sad, you may not want to accept it, but that's where things are going already and the data do not indicate a reversal to physical media as you said. VCR is becoming an old collectors item amongst some people, just like Vinyl had a bit of a comeback. That doesn't mean the majority will keep on listening to music via spotify.@@TheBluCorner

@@taserrr You can't compare today with 15 years ago... The market isn't the same anymore and yes the sales of physical media or even it's players will NEVER be the same as it was back then... That's just a pipedream and you won't find many people that'll disagree with you on that for sure, but Physical Media is still not nearly as dead as you make it out to be... It started out as a "niche" marked and it's goin back to that. As far as price goes.. Well that all depends on what you're getting... Do you get every single new weekly release or do you get every single streaming service out there (that has pricehikes over and over again) so no... I don't factor price into it cause there's good and bad things on both sides too when it comes to price. DVDs are STILL outselling both bluray and 4k because of the CHEAP prices they have (there we go with price again). If there were no boutique labels around I would proberly agree alot more with you then I do, but when they say sales numbers are goin up year after year again (sure they don't press the wast amount of discs as they did 15 years ago) and you have both disney, amazon putting streaming exclusive content to disc and now Netflix is teasing exclusives to disc too then YES! there's still a big enough marked for Physical Media in their mind too or they simply wouldn't be doin it. "BOTH" will co-exist for many years to come and that's how it should be.

I’m so appreciative that somebody is finally speaking out. Take Ken from Midlevelmedia for example, he’s just an all around phony.

There are a lot of KZbinrs who seem solely focused on the package than the actual film, and it kinda fucks me off, I can appreciate these people buying the products as its that money that's keeping these boutique labels going, so I have no problem with that, I ha e a problem with people buying a blu/4K and focusing 100% on the box, the art work,all the shit inside that pumps the price up. Sure I'd love to have every limited edition made but financially its not possible and all these collectors seem to have endless streams of money available to drop $300 on a limited edition of fucking Titanic because it was limited 2000 copies. So fucking what, it's Titanic, I paid 7.99 for my blu of it and that's fine, I don't care if it came with a tiny replica of the boat, I don't care if it comes with a signed photo of Kate Winslet, I care about the movie.

That guy is a massive phony. I watched a video where he said he never collected physical-media before until around 2017 & then be started spending huge money on building a collection, before then he was obsessed with collecting other unrelated things. And if I had a pound for every movie he gets in that he says I haven't seen this then I'd be a millionaire & they aren't exactly obscure titles either. Someone in his 40's would've seen a lot more & have collected physical-media a lot longer if they were really that passionate about it. Just seems to be that he's one of these people who has a bit of disposal income & so has spend it on collecting something so now he's landed on the physical-media bandwagon.
