One thing that worries me here is the seats. Bike seats are not made for comfort, but to interface with your skelleton (pelvic bones) in such a way that avoids impacting any soft tissues. If the seat is soft, the tissues will be compressed, and scar. This can affect males very badly. Now that's bicycles, sure. Mainly road bikes. Ebikes go faster, amplifiy the bumps, and have better suspensions. Meanwhile, with mountains bikes, you'll be standing lots of the time, so it's not as much of an issue. I've also ridden motorycles. Motorcycle seats have lots of surface area. You'll have to stand on big bumps (lest you get ejected!) but normally you're sitting. Sitting on a bike involves a greater area, though, such as all of your legs and even your feet on the pegs. When you are crouched down, there's almost no "sitting" involved. I just wonder ebikes, because they seem to be seats, seats that take most of your weight, because you can't distribute weight to working pedals as much as you can to motorcycle pegs. I'm worried that a lot of ebikers are going to have regrets when they hit their 30s and 40s.
@Greg-me8le4 ай бұрын

Audio is excellent, and it's fine for your tastes and preferences to evolve. I do group rides with gas bikes and Surron's all the time, and the most fun I've had was blasting along the trails on the heels of a Surron. For 200 range, you must be talking about full-on motorcycles. I've never seen a gas moped with a 200 mile range, and when I did a group ride with them where *I* was warned it would be a long ride, it was the gas bikes that needed to stop at a gas station and refuel. I'm also wondering what type of e-bike only gets 20 miles of range. Are we talking a Jetson Bolt Pro? 😉 I used to get 30 to 40 miles on a Rad folding fat tire bike when it was stock. The Mantis X is said to do 62 miles, but that's in eco mode with a top speed of 30mph. I've considered an e-moto, even have a short list of ones I want when the time comes. I'll likely go with the Spark Javelin which will do over 60mph, is sold as a rock at high speed, and is NHTSA approved for fully legal road use. The problem for me right now is that I can't ride an e-moto on trails and in parks, and that's where I do most of my riding. Stay safe, and let us know how the Wired works out!

A well powered Electric motorcycle with great suspension that can do +60mph is typically like 6-10k msrp which is like 1.5-2x the cost of its ICE counterpart. I use to ride ebikes too back in the day, but if you have $4000-5000 in cash, a motorcycle or gas scooter will be a better investment and will last +50k miles. It's also a lot safer as its suspension will keep you from dying. Ebikes and E motorcycles are way to unregulated in my opinion. Since they aren't registered or insured, they are a liability on the road and likely to be pulled over for a $400-700 ticket. Edit: I Agree with so many points you mentioned. If you want a really powerful ebike, they can get very expensive. I hope over time they can gradually become more affordable.

You make some good points, but what you are doing is riding a dirtbike on the street. Aside from being quieter, it's just like riding a non-street legal dirtbike on the street. You're illegal as an eBike and illegal as a motorcycle. The fact that you haven't been caught and punished yet is a miracle. Maybe you have very permissive eBike laws in your state, but they're not legal anywhere I know of. I went through a similar path as you. Started out with a Class 3 eBike. Wanted to not pedal at 28 mph. Got an eMoped and unlocked its "Race" or "off-road" mode and was riding 32 mph in bike lanes. I knew it was only a matter of time before I got pinched. Did some ongoing battery cost calculations vs. a 125cc scooter, and the the scooter made a lot more sense if the vehicle was kept long enough to have to replace the batteries. In your case, since you value quality suspension, how about a 250 class dual sport motorcycle or supermoto? Get your training, get the license, do it right. Yamaha XT250, for example. Compare battery replacement cost on your eMoto vs. ongoing costs on an IC dual sport motorcycle. Include insurance, maintenance, and gas for the amount of mileage you go.

If a bicycle saddle is uncomfortable, your bike doesn't fit. Also, there is no such thing as a bicycle frame or fork suspension designed for comfort. They are for off road control. Most on e-bikes failed at that in The 90's (not kidding). Even though I make my living almost 100% from e-bikes, we are in almost 109% agreement. We can't agree on range though. I had 8 of my custom mid-drive builds do RAGBRAI never needing to be charged during the day (avg 80 miles/day). Factory e-bikes are catching up and let's fsce it, you aren't comfy on that emoto much longer than about 25 miles either. Many of my customers ride e-bikes because they miss riding motorcycles, but just don't feel safe in traffic any longer. It helps that you can get to most major employers and attractions in The Quad Cities without having to ride a bicycle on the street. Admittedly, very few of us actually use our e-bikes as car reppacements except in ideal situations of less than ten miles (sold my car & truck when I first retired). Where I live, you'd be hard pressed to find anyine that doesn't know of a close friend or relative that has been killed on a motorcycle in traffic. I don't feel safe in a compact car in traffic. Thst's the onky reason I believe emotos will never catch on in The U.S. Those who own them must agree or we wouod have such a problem with them speeding on our local MUPs
@Albertkallal14 күн бұрын
Ok, all of those reasons are great - and much agree. However, one thing you did not address is the legality of such e-moto bikes. In other words, if you can exceed 750watts, and 28mph, then you need license and insurance. How are you dealing with this issue?
@DanWipperАй бұрын
The reason I'd get an e bike is because you would be less likely to be bothered by cops. We have a lot of trails here, they wouldn't let a motorcycle looking bike on. The Wired Predator is an inconspicuous 6000 watt sleeper, just slap a 750 watt sticker on it and if they ask just point, yeah, 750, that's the ticket.
@FWS_Sinister4 ай бұрын
Motorbike requires higher price (bike, insurance, registration), more gear, more restrictions, and the higher speed ability makes it more unsafe (hence having more gear). Not to mention the hassle of getting the insurance and license. Edit: also less portability, I live in an apartment and need to bring my bike upstairs daily. Less exercise, even if it’s not much still keeps you active. Also as other ppl mentioned motorbikes are in danger of cops. I’m not saying e-bikes are better, just that one is not better than the other, just depends on your needs, and average use case makes e-bikes fit most people’s needs enough The only good point I see is the lack of bike infrastructure, in which case it would be safer to get something higher speed to keep up with cars. But it’s still quite unsafe to ride compared to a car, so if you can get a car, even if it’s an old beater, you should probably get one

Ebikes don't require a license, plate, registration, and permit, nore does it require insurance. That is why people like ebikes. My ebike is a Ridstar q20, it has a seat style similar to what emotos have. All i need to do is upgrade the shock and it will be a similar comfort, a much cheaper price, and less requirements to ride one (ie; license, plate, etc). A big part of why people think the range is crap is because they are comparing the range of your affordable electric dirt bike to much more expensive gas bikes. If you look at expensive emotos, you'll find that they have similar range to expensive dirtbikes.

Funny. My tastes changed from Gas-moto to E-moto to E-bike. If you take your same line of thinking further, you'll see actual petrol/gas motorcycles make more sense, on your own terms. The XR150, Ruckus, Metro, Grom, Trail, Cub etc are made by Honda. For practically the same price they're better in nearly all categories. More power, more comfort, better reliability, better highspeed safety, better tires, better brakes, etc etc etc. Many cheaper alternatives as well. The reason people discount them is only because they can't break the law as easily. Lets be honest. E-bikes that look like pedal bicycles (Wired Freedom) are nice because you can drive them like a bicycle without the backlash or negative consequence that you would get from doing the same with a gas powered motorcycle. You're not as safe when on the road (compared to an gas-moto or e-moto), but pedestrians and road vehicles are more safe around you. Electric motorcycles, E-motos, and similar higher powered electric vehicles are fun and more useful than an equivalent gas motorcycle, but only when used at the expense of others. When I drive my 72V Surron through traffic, I'm increasing the chance of an accident and those other drivers have to work harder while I'm pretending to be a bicycle. Watch any Sur Ron video. You can see multiple times where drivers are working harder than they otherwise would if he drove like a gas motorcycle. Now my preferences are... When commuting on roads.. E-bikes (~2kW) driven like a bicycle or a gas-motorcycle driven legally. On bike paths... Ebikes < 40lbs. Everything else... off-road, away from people and the most power I can afford.

Do a revision on Hun vs mid drive. Yes hub drives are less maintenence, but as you yourself are saying you prefer these emotos now, and they're almost all mid drive. Something like; oil change on a talaria is worth the trouble for the insane torque compared to hub drives etc cuz it gives you that ability to get out of trouble if need be, compared to a 80nm hub motor etcetc

At this point, while riding illegal emoto's on the road, just get a motorcycle like a big boy.
@longrove57104 ай бұрын
You missed the fact that you were breaking the law on your e-moto this entire video. Very few people want to have their ride impounded and on a second offense go to jail and catch a misdemeanor. In my area the police will draw guns on you for illegally riding a "Surron" on the road. Just get a motorcycle permit and a bike with a real vin# like the Land Moto District, Ryvid Outset or the Solar Eclipse 2.0 RCR.

Exactly. These are dirt bikes and not street legal. You see these videos of guys like that surronster idiot riding their emotos not only out in the street, but in public parks through picnic areas and walking trails. They also ride in gangs of several dozen out in the streets similar to the wheelie boy ghetto rats, these clowns refer to these rides as "takeovers". This kind of hooliganism is just giving these machines a bad name. A lot of these guys are talking about speed, get yourselves a dual sport that will go twice as fast as one of these emotos and IS street legal.

Just go get yourself a vintage honda from the 70's. Indestructible - and if you keep it for 10 years it will be worth 4x what you paid for it. Just shy away from the 750 four, unless you have some experience. Many will be cheaper than the entire kit for your first e bike... Throw a couple more bucks in and you can get yourself a fine motorcycle that will not disappoint.

These comments are deeply depressing. Why would you willingly call for regulation knowing it's only going to backfire and result in 10 mph top speed and 250 watt limits? Just post 20 mph speed limits on bike lanes and let vehicles under 150 lbs be considered ebikes.

The entire premise of this video topic is non-sensical. The MOTORCYCLE that you are riding on sidewalks, bike paths etc, is not a legal option for 99% of the USA. Simply put, it's not an e-bike, it's an e-moto and they are just apples and oranges really. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

The fact is that both the technical development of ebikes and the legislation is still in the gestation period, another 10 years both will be very different, it will have to be or there will be just to many electric cars that will need charging up,in the Uk it is still rather like the red flag act, cars limited to 4 miles an hour preceded by a person holding a red flag to warn the hourses, they should have also had someone following behind to pick up the bits that fell of them.

An Ebke is as dangerous as the person riding it , change the rider ,and strangely the same ebike become s safe amazingly
