My brother in law was a logger. He brought home ends in his pick up for firewood. My son started splitting wood at ten years old. My son has excessive energy. He split my brother in laws and was permitted to split the excess and sell it. He made a small fortune and became very physical fit.

That's what I was thinking. If you are going to go to the trouble to get a permit so you can burn you scraps it almost sounds like you would be better off selling the pile as-is to someone else who can haul it away, cut it up, and sell it as firewood. That's a win-win for everyone.

Pine, hemlock and fir are perfectly fine for the chimney as long as they're adequately dry. Problematic creosote buildup in a flue occurs when there is incomplete combustion of any wood that is too high in moisture content.

In the UK, new laws come in next year prohibiting the sale and use of "wet wood" in domestic wood-burning stoves and fireplaces. Stoves now have to meet emissions and "burn" standards, and I think that coal fires, using natural coal rather than the manufactured stuff like Coalite, will be dead and gone. As usual, it's not clear how any Government can stop a private individual from harvesting and using wet wood, but it looks good and fits the current Green agendas.
@infoanorexic
@infoanorexic 4 жыл бұрын
There is a simple way to avoid that altogether, but I won't post it here ... lest someone try it, not do it right and end up burning their house down ... it's a procedure that you want to start using only after your chimney and flue system has been fully cleaned and checked, which should be done at the start of woodburning season anyway.

I'm burning all pine right now and will for most of this winter. Had 6 large standing dead red pines taken down at my place. It burns great. Of course it is super dry and I size the pieces relatively large in the wood stove. The thing I like the most about it, is that there is very little ash from burning the pine. It certainly doesn't burn as long as a more dense wood like oak, but that is OK.

I wanted to thank you for getting me through my hospital stay. I came down with COVID December 28th. I was rushed to the hospital where I stayed for two months. I got well enough to move me out of ICU and to a bed. My wife brought my iPad to me. I don't watch much TV so I started watching KZbin. I found your channel and for the next two months I watched your videos. You are really living the dream of what it means to be free. I love how you are so optimistic. That would actually be a Biblical concept. In the OT... farmers were not permitted to glean the corners of their fields or pick up anything that fell to the ground. That way, the poor could come and get it. But the thing is.... the poor had to WORK for it. Completely different concept of the welfare state today.

It’s funny you mentioned the “free” firewood. We had the same experience at our sawmill. We had folks who wanted it cut to length, loaded and even delivered for nothing. But I have to tell you that the one that scared me was when we agreed to pile some slabs for a fellow to cut up on his own and take home. We got to watching him when he showed up. It was clear that he and his chainsaw were not friends. We were afraid he was going to cut his leg off right there in our log yard. So we went down and cut it up for him and even loaded it to get him out of there. Never again.

I hear stories about that. People expect you go deliver stuff that they are giving away. I might do it for a good friend or someone in real need but for the most part it just seems selfish. I wonder if you could chip some of the hardwood and sell it for smoking and maybe chip the pine and hemlock for much or to compost it instead of burning it.

Thanks for answering that question! Pine has a resin that lines the chimney over time and creates a fire hazard. I thought you could have a scrap pile of hardwoods on the edge of your property with a sign, “take what you want, as is, but don’t leave a mess.” Or, “$5/piece funds go to charity. Don’t leave a mess.”

It’s been a busy summer and catching up backwards. I see you have the same tractor I do. I agree the transmission with logs is waaaaaay better. I can direct load to the mill most of the time. Overall I am quite happy with my TYM, minus a problem with the third function valve being leaky due to a bad seal at install in NC. That tractor has made a night and day difference for me in ALL ways and I have zero regrets on the purchase. That tractor is practically therapy and what I do to right the world some days. In respect to the off cuts, I completely get the whole firewood thing. We split for a living as well as the mill but rarely off cuts unless hardwood. We do own chippers though and send a lot of them through for chip that we lay down or compost. (We don’t process walnut in FL ) Only people burning free firewood is us, lol, with a cold beer.

@@OutoftheWoods0623 on the JRR long valve (they use two manufactures) the lower back one was pinched when they put it on. I didn’t notice at delivery and saw a sheen on a puddle a few days later. I did have to go around and put in a bunch of pins too that got missed but TS is a regular daily stop sometimes. Simple. The grapple lines are super long too so they twist and get caught on brush too then need to be tightened.

Here on the East Coast of canada, we burn soft wood & slab wood. You usually have to buy the slab wood as it comes off the pile for so much per pick up truck load usually in the 25-40 dollar range. Chunked soft wood, a year off the stump is running 120-140 bucks a cord, you get fast heat & if you are just knocking the chill outta the house or shop, fast burning softwoods the way to go. Saving your hardwood fire logs for colder winter time & their longer slower burning time. Did I mention most everywhere you hand load it yourself, some spots a guy might dump a load on your truck , but its not the usual way .

I love to watch you cut lumber on the mill and I know you have gotten questions about the time it takes. Would it be possible on a day you are going to cut a lot of board feet to place a camera and live stream the whole process. You would not have to explain anything, just set camera up and go at it one log after another That would give me and others the insight on just the what,where,how and when of wood cutting. You could just go about your normal day cutting,we could see it,you would have no editing and we could learn what it is like. If this is not possible I under stand but if it is I would watch it for sure Thanks

I get slab wood from Sawyers here in Michigan. Some I pay for some is given free of charge. All I load myself then cut to length. But I do agree with you, time is money. I really enjoy your videos.

Never heard of a burn permit before ! 🤔 Pine leaves a resin build up on the chimney ,so i was always told, but if you burn it in conjunction with coal that apparently gets rid of the resin residue ! 👍

They say that buring pine in a fireplace is not a good idea because the soot cakes up in the chimney and its flammable itself. Turn your chimney into a roman candle.

A decade ago, there was a place we used to camp every year in VT. Up the road was a bowl factory. They would turn a 3-4 bowls out of one log section. The off cuts were for sale for firewood at $5 per pickup truck bed full, but you had to load it yourself among the wasp nests and mice and other critters. Then, one year, they just said it was better money to just chip it and burn it as waste because they had one old guy who'd whole job was to sit around until someone came to buy firewood.

Hey, Love your videos :) I see you are very well organized with everything. :) I saw some pieces in the burn pile that would be useful to a thinker like me. IE; small slabs and what not. But I can see , it's not worth your time to mess with. I can see why. Looking forward to the next video :) Thank You !!!

I suppose in TN, people don't need nearly as much heat. Here up north, all those scraps would go in an outdoor boiler.

Even in northwestern Ohio, if you would spray paint “free” on something and put it beside that pile, it would disappear. No fuss, no either, no drama, no burn permits, no having to babysit a big fire. If I was him, my shop and house would be heated by an outdoor wood burner.

@@patrickc1508 Same here. The reality is, Americans in most parts of the country just have it too easy. Imagine being so welded to your TV show that you can't take a weekend to move a pile of free firewood slabs, or a few minutes per day to throw them in a stove.

People have always said that spruce and pine firewood will plug up the chimney. In my experience, all wood will plug a chimney if you have it smolder too much. I burn all woods and never have a problem.

I used to take only 2 or 3 hours a week and gather up my cutoffs and pile them for firewood. I would stop by a local church and ask the pastor if he knew a needy family or families. Going out to the store I would bring a small load with me and drop it off if they would take it. Didn't cost me anything and helped someone out...

Just got home from work, and here's a brand new video to ease me into the evening. Lovely. Looks like a beautiful day there. And some gorgeous timber. Man does life get any better? A coupla questions, if I may. What would be some other uses for Cherry? I'm no timber expert, in fact most of what I know about US timbers is what I've learned from watching your vids. Is Cabbage a particular breed? Years ago when I ran a computer business one of my clients was a high-end cat breeding business, they bred exotic Siamese variants, and one of the most sought after types were what they called "tabby point Siamese". They had a couple there at the time and they looked a lot like Cabbage there, that's why I ask. As a little side story, during my time there working on their computers (I made many visits over the years, some of them lengthy when new machines and networks were being installed and whatnot) one of their "defects" (a cat with some breeding imperfections that made them unsuitable as show cats, yet still too valuable as breeding stock to sell as a pet) took a real shine to me and we hung out like best mates whenever I was there. His name was Deville, and we were inseparable during my visits. He was a "flame point Siamese", had a really chill personality but was ultra shy, the owners said they'd never seen him take to anybody like he did to me, he usually ran and hid when stranger came to the premises. In his eyes I was special (according to them - yeah I know, that sounds weird, but cat people can sometimes be a bit funny). Anyway, when I got out of the IT game to follow my dream of running a second-hand bookshop (which is what I do now) I went and saw them to tell them I wouldn't be able to be their computer guy anymore. They had been a good client, and one of my longest, and I'd become very friendly with them so I felt it was right to go and see them when I was moving on. They were so kind to me, and they actually offered to let me take Deville to have as a pet, as they knew he loved me and that I would provide him with a very good home. I did not know what to say at that point I was so stunned by their unexpected and unbelievably generous offer. I thought about it long and hard, but in the end I had to decline, for two reasons. First, I just didn't feel comfortable walking away with an animal of such value as a gift, and secondly the wife and I live on a bush property and we have worked hard to provide a little wildlife sanctuary for our native animals and birds, and as cats are a major threat to our Australian wildlife it seemed kind of hypocritical to own a cat. Yes we could have kept Deville inside, but that just seemed unfair when there was a big wide world outside that he could only see through a window, and the many birds and small marsupials we see would just be a tease to him. Deville stayed at the cattery, and now I have my bookshop. I've sometimes thought about getting a cat for the shop, as many bookshops have one, but there is a really nice cafe next door and keeping the cat out of the kitchen would be impossible and would present all manner of health and safety issues so I think it's best to not go down that road. Anyway, all that is by-the-by, I hope you enjoyed that little story. Cheers

I enjoy your videos a great deal. Since I have gotten my own mill earlier this year I can't get enough of it. I really want to cut some nice live edge slabs. The problem right is I don't know I might be able to sell them. Maybe you could make a video sometime on finding sources to sell your products and how much to ask for it
