I currently have one of the oldest continuously running tanks on KZbin. Here's why I don't upgrade it and run vintage equipment.

Merry Christmas. It's refreshing to see an older reef with older equipment that is still chugging along. My 30 year old 58 gallon finally sprung a leak in one of it's seams a year ago. That's the only reason I upgraded. Had to save my now 31 year old clownfish, starfish and some of my original corals. I understand your your thought process completely! Tank is looking amazing!

Best video of the year, we tend to focus on the shiny bells and whistles. If it ain't broken why fix it. I have been there bought new equipment for the tank, thinking it will make me a better reefer. You said it well.

I love the tank and your outlook on the livestock. Most people don’t look at the longevity of the fish or coral but instead at what is the new animal to have. I think too many people look at aquatic life as disposable when in comparison to another type of pet. Fish can and do have distinct personalities and individual traits. That community fish that is supposed to get along with everything else ends up terrorizing the tank while that predator fish who is supposed to eat everything is the most chill fish in the tank. Keep doing what you do and Happy Holidays to all. 🎉

You can do a detailed KZbin for each choice you made, how you DIY things, and as you go through cleaning up and doing general maintenance. That’s a year worth of great KZbins. I’ve got some nice softies and leathers, but I’ve never shipped. Maybe we will try and work something out in springtime.

You are so right. So many reefers jump on the latest and greatest equipment coming. But will that equipment make anything better if you’re not putting in the work nope. This hobby in my opinion has been turned into what can you afford and not to take care of everything and test stay on your maintenance and just stay with what you got. Patience is the key to reefing you can’t get a fully grown out tank in 6 months
@DGGuaglianone6 ай бұрын
My tank is approaching one year old and I can’t imagine five, ten, twenty years of coral and fish growth. The only thing I can imagine for my tank in that time is the thousand plus water changes and counting.

No need to upgrade, your tank is incredible.

As “Dr. Ian Malcom” said in Jurassic Park, “Life finds a way.” I bought some mushrooms about 3 years ago. For some unknown reason they just melted away and disappeared. About a month ago I looked in the far back corner of my tank and there were four of these mushrooms. I don’t have any idea why it took them 3 years to reappear. But it was a pleasant surprise!!

you could try a aussie stripey for the aiptasia! I added a stripey to my tank when I was having a outbreak and he took care of it minus the hard to reach ones! so far hasn't been any impact to my corals from him but that could be luck but I'm happy with my choice, they have tones of character, super friendly and I dont think they would be too hard to catch as this thing would just swim into the net or your hands. Loves people! I wish he would eat some of my zoas though there growing like weeds lol Tank looks amazing! keep up the good work simple is best! I love that Vlamingii Tang! Merry Christmas, thank you for sharing I think long term is a good way to think and not replacing equipment for the sake of it

Love seeing those mh lights. I'm seriously thinking about going back with some blue and white led strips for evening supplement. The one question I have is. When do you think you need to change the tank itself due to age? I have no idea how well silicone ages with the constant blasting from light. The old glass tanks do seem to just go forever though.

Nice way to keep a reef tank. Ive diy'd lots of things for my reef including live rock, hardly do any water changes, run it with tap water that i condition, and my fish and corals are doing great
@MileHighReefers7 ай бұрын
Thank you! When I first saw Jake Adams reef before he started the studio he was running tap water. I was blown away. He explained he lived in Golden Colorado and had some amazing water right out of the tap no need for an RO.

Loved the visit he had out to your place a while back. Although he tried to make fun of the " no water change game", I've done it successfully also. Good to see some updates. Love what you bring to the table. Including this episode as we all are told that you need this and that to keep a reef successfully . We can definitely keep a decent tank without all the smoke. I made a video of my tank (nothing like your tank, definitely not the best speaker 😂 but I have to start somewhere) and although that tank is young, I've done it for two years in a smaller tank with great success. Looking forward to watching it grow and looking forward to more of your videos

Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Have you thought about berghia’s for aiptasia? They seem to do a good job getting rid of them… The sad part is they die off if you can’t capture them and rehome them… I just got some for my tank to get rid of aiptasia I hope…

Great tank! Don’t change anything. Except, maybe put in a bunch of really small fish, you might see here and there not and again. Carefully quarantine the bunch for two months. Carefully pick them for color, personality, how they’d like the environment you have created as an ecosystem.

Honestly in my opinion people are changing up their tank way to often. I think the best way is to get what you want an leave it alone. Its really unhealthy to the tank to have your hand in the it 50 times a day. So you doin it right
@MileHighReefers7 ай бұрын
I totally agree with you

You can buy good lighting and not spend thousands nowadays. I would seriously look at upgrading to something that's more reliable than your central lighting overheating and shutting off. Long term success also means keeping up on the maintenance and replacement of equipment as it ages. Personally I just upgraded my generator so when the power goes out I can keep my system running.

@michaelfallen15647 ай бұрын
Your tank was the inspiration for my current 125 build, a mature mixed reef is a sight to behold and it's getting rarer and rarer to see. You could buy the most expensive LED lights, DC controllable skimmer, tank monitor with an automatic doser, WIFI controllable powerheads, etc, and none of it would make up for basic routine maintenance and simple, reliable equipment
