Clickbait title I'm afraid: I'm having to have Invisalign, but there are no horrors to report! Yet.
I'm just sort of very non-excited about all of the added fuss and slightly worried about the pain factor! Would love to hear your experiences...
As I say in the video I have to have them to make space in my mouth. Or something. So that they can do a load of other stuff. It's very boring but obviously I don't want to end up with NO teeth so it's a step that should be done!
Have you had Invisalign? How did you find it? Any tips? Thanks in advance!
PS this amazing jumper is from last year, Whistles. It was in the sale yesterday but now all sold out...

Ruth, I love the gap in your teeth. I hate that so many women look like each other nowadays. And I think it's ignorant when Americans comment on our teeth in the UK. Good for you for saying you don't want advice... it would drive me mad to have the unwanted advice. They never listen though..... Keep being you Ruth. x

I’m in the final month of Invisalign (6-month treatment) and I’m really glad I did it. Here’s some advice: - keep the first couple of days as peaceful as you can with the first retainer because I had headaches and was pretty cranky from the pain (it gets easier with new retainers). - if you ever find yourself getting annoyed for no reason, take them out for 5 minutes and have a cuppa. - buy retainer cleaning crystals from a pharmacy in addition to the ones they give you (it’s not enough) and soak them every morning when you have breakfast. Most people don’t notice I have them and the lisp is louder in my head than what people hear! Good luck!

Oh Ruth, please don’t worry. I had Invisalign a few years ago. Decided to get to the front of the queue before I had to shell out for orthodontic work for my three teenage daughters! It’s well worth it and will pass quickly. It sounds like your dentist is going to retain the character in your smile while working with the natural anatomy of your teeth. Perfect! Just don’t be surprised if you whistle a little with your aligners in the short term! 😬

Hi Ruth, I had invisalign myself. The process took about 3 months longer than initially expected. About 3 years after I am still very happy with the result. One thing though: did not expect to never chew gum again. So if you like chewing gum you might enjoy it before you start your journey 😉 This is my first comment so let me take to chance to say I absolutely adore your videos, also those on the uphill channel. I think you're intelligent enough to know what is needed for your teeth. I agree that it really isn't to do with cosmetic effect but the protection of tooth integrity for the long term. After three opinions from qualified professionals, you know what you need and are following through. Best of luck.

You're hilarious 😁 As for the gap in your teeth I'm really surprised some people comment negatively on them, maybe they're from the US where there's a lot of uniformity in dentistry aesthetics. Here in France we love them bc we think they're really cute, so much so that we call them "Les dents du bonheur", literally "teeth of happiness". They're considered an asset. Vanessa Paradis and Yannick Noah who are very popular in France have them and it has always added to their endearing charm 😊 Good luck with your orthodental journey, I hope it will be efficient for your dental health. I'm really glad they're not going to try and suppress your "lucky 🍀 teeth gap"

I love your teeth. You wouldn’t be you without the gap! I had Invisalign (also for less sexy reasons). I didn’t find them painful but they are a bit of a faff but you get used to it. My tip is although they’re a faff make sure you follow the advice because if you try and cheat or don’t wear them as much as you should it’ll just drag out. I think when you’re not having them for cosmetic reasons you aren’t seeing the improvement so have less motivation but try and stick with it! Good luck lovely!

I'm currently doing a homeobloc appliance (worn overnight only) primarily NOT for cosmetic reasons, but rather, to improve chewing and breathing, both of which are affected by a narrow dental arch. It's not uncomfortable, and because I'm a mature woman it will take a good deal longer than it does for youngsters or kids, but I am hopeful it will improve my health. I've never had a pretty smile, so that's not something I can hope for. I hope the Invisalign works out for you. Yes, grazing doesn't happen for me after I put my appliance in, but it's better to go to bed having digested dinner, anyway. We ARE fortunate to have such first world problems. Merry Christmas, Ruth!

I don’t know if Invisalign is different in the US or UK, but I’m currently on them (month 4/6) and I have had mostly no pain, and the pain I’ve had has been minor! Not grazing has been annoying, but definitely doable along with feeling more clean when I brush my teeth and floss compared to traditional braces. Not only that, I noticed more space for flossing very quickly! Good luck!

I've just got braces. A removable one on my top teeth for 6 months and then fixed for up to 2 years top and bottom. The bottom ones ate on at the moment too. I'm struggling to eat properly apart from soup and protein shakes (great for weight loss 😂) occasionally take them out for meals out. It will be worth it because I had a terrible underbite and crooked top teeth. An awful fear of dentists in my younger years. Good luck to you x

I have an over bite. About a year ago my veneer chipped on a front tooth. I also had a gap. So I decided to have the two front ones done with composites. Didn't have any straightening done, as I didn't want it, or whitening as I can't afford the up keep of that. I am now glad I didn't get my over bite done as the feeling of composites are a little odd and when they touch the bottom teeth I don't like it. They are coloured to match my natural off white. My teeth are all left normal. I had the composites shortened, as the length they planned felt too long and they gave me a slight lisp! Which I was not going to keep!! So I look normal and don't have perfect pearly whites. I don't use them to bite down on as it is an odd feeling and you will find that after years of a gap, suddenly not having one is bizarre! I am still not truly used to it. I certainly couldn't have all of my teeth done! Hope this helps.x

I had both metal braces as a youth adult and because I didn’t wear my retainers my teeth moved again and I got Invisalign in my 30s. I can honestly say I preferred metal braces because of the type of person I am. With Invisalign because you have to take them in and out to eat or drink anything but water I was forever losing them and just found them generally annoying - esp when out and about. Metal braces after the first few days I just got used to and forgot they were there - train tracks are great for the lazy girl like me - but if you’re organised and dedicated unlike me I’m sure Invisalign are great!

I love your gap, it makes you, you. My granddaughter has been on and now completed her Invisalign journey. She lapsed for a short time, basically laziness on her part, and ended up having to pay £180 a month to get everything back on track. A harsh and expensive lesson for her to learn (her parents made her pay the £180) but she now has beautifully straight, perfect teeth and says she's so pleased that she did it. So buckle up for the ride and em-brace it (sorry, that was baaaad🙄😊), I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result.

I had braces at 19...when I was fully grown, and it really changed the way I look for the worse. If you have anything pushed together or back toward your throat, your face will be less full. But the vaneers (as we call them) add bulk to the teeth and push them back out. Ask a lot of questions and be sure you will look the same afterward!

As I've had Invisalign myself I can tell you that it is great and your teeth will be more than fine. The movement in the teeth are so slow that nothing unexpected will happen, it will be a bit painful at first and there's certainly a technique to putting them in and removing them but you will get used to it. Also I would wear them for the recommended time everyday as otherwise they may have to make more adjustments to the next set of trays which would be annoying for the dentist and yourself. Keep us updated, I'd love to hear how you get on x

As a baby I had a dummy or whatever they're called these days, but my mother took it away from me when I started infants school aged four. In an act of defiance I started to suck my thumb (do children still do that these days?) which carried on for FAR too many years. So naturally my two front top teeth stick out...not a lot thank goodness, but it has given me an overbite. I also have a small gap in between them, helped along because I used to stick needles and pins in the gap during needlework lessons at school. It wasn't until I was in my mid 50's that any dentist suggested a brace and other things like it. If I'd been in my 20's-30's I may have done something, but these days I really can't be arsed. Would it be possible to give Invisalign a trial run for say, a couple of months or so to see how you get on, and then go from there. Something to ponder on 🤔.

To get the best results use the bite things a lot, I never ate/drank with them in, it’s gross. I took them out for a cuppa many times a day and to eat. I was surprised how quickly I got used to them. Good luck.

I think if you are happy with your teeth and have no pain issues due to your teeth being misaligned it is not worth it even if a dentist or people around you recommend it because it's not a walk in the park to have teeth corrected. Also I love your gap! I just finished my Invisalign and it was not the best experience. I got it because I had TMJ issues and my jaw was killing me all the way into my ears! I also wanted to close my front tooth gap even though it was not that big. The orthodontist that I went to was experienced in treating TMJ with Invisalign and said my bite was not great and needed correcting so that my muscles did not have to work so hard. The process was supposed to be 5-8 months and while my teeth looked great after just a few weeks, my bite was still not great at the end and I ended up doing 4 additional refinements which took a total of 2 years. I had flare ups with the TMJ during the whole process, painful swelling in my gums where my gap used to be (even while staying very on top of cleaning my teeth), and also some of my old fillings were jagged and one recently fell out and now needs replacing. And honestly my bite is still not perfect as some of my teeth hit one another too hard when I chew or bite down. They were supposed to rescan my teeth and check for bite issues at the end, but they never did and I I was so over it by the end and my TMJ felt a little better so I did not ask for any more refinements. So in the end I still have some TMJ pain and my teeth look nice, but for me it was not worth the pain or cost.

Had invisalign and hated them. Just the taking them off and on every meal. Your teeth are moving in there and are painful and soft. It's the pain putting them back on, painful as if it was the first time. Almost felt like in the hour it took me to eat my teeth had moved back, so I had to make them fit again somewhere they didn't want belong anymore. Got normal braces after that and was so much better, painful only for a couple of hours every 2 or so weeks when I had to get them adjusted. Not nearly as insufferable as invisalign. Good luck though 😂❤

For your snacks just pop them out and have a nosh, then rinse and pop them back in 😊 I kept a case in my bag to hold them in restaurants and bought a sonic cleaner to keep them sparkling clean. Don’t fret the unavoidable, lol

Invisalign was a mistake for me. My bottom teeth are quite crooked. They definitely were improved but they just wanted to move back. Instead of wearing the retainer every night I would wear it every few nights. Then it would be so painful when I wore it that I had to take a few days off. Then my teeth would have moved in that short time and they hurt again. Finally I gave up and now they are a mess. Completely different case than you so you’ll probably be fine.

I’d love to say it won’t hurt but it will. I ate Mac n cheese for the first few months. But you do get used to it. You’ll have very clean teeth by the end because after you take them out to eat, you have to brush your teeth before you put them back on. I would not recommend drinking anything other than clear liquids while wearing them as they do stain. All that aside, it was the best thing I did for myself. I never used to give a full smile because one tooth overlapped the other. Now I smile as often as I can. It’s worth it.

At 37 I had braces for 1,5 year, and I was fine with it. Despite warnings from the orthodontic assistant I ate apples (I just chopped them and bit them off with my molars) and ate chewing gum as well. Not a problem. As soon as I had braces I suddenly met loads of adults who also had one. Also kissing with braces (I was single at that time) was a whole new adventure 🤩 Tip: Have a retainer installed behind your teeth, as soon as you're ready with the Invisalign. It takes a day or two to get used to those as well, but your teeth will stay in place! And I always, always had toothpicks and a small mirror with me to clean my teeth after eating.

As we age our eyeteeth, top and bottom, start to pull in to the centre, with the result that some of us get crooked teeth where they used to be straight. I think pain is subjective. If you're pain sensitive to begin with, it probably will bother you more. I've had Invisalign since May and it's not been bad. It's just a short period of time in your life but my opinion is that it's always better to be able to keep your own real teeth as much as possible, so the inconvenience now is worth it.

I am in month 3 of 12-18 (god help me). It’s fine. I do have pain but I watched a video with a few tips that have helped. First- put a new set in overnight so the pain isn’t as bad. Second- sing along to music so your tongue gets used to the placement to avoid the lisp. Thirdly- enjoy your can of coke and don’t stress about it!

They aren’t painful. However, good for you telling people to keep their opinions to themselves! I had Invisalign…it goes fast and it’s definitely not painful.

Also, don't worry about not being able to "graze" during the day. You still can by removing your trays, however, in time, you will find that it's such a pain the arse to remove, eat, brush, floss, clean tray and put back in, that you will find yourself wanting to graze less.

Major tip - from day one - buy an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your aligners morning and evening. It will keep them super clean and clear and is really handy if you need to wear a retainer at night afterwards. Invisalign is a pain but actually pretty amazing 🦷

I am a dentist. Accept the process. Yes there will be some accomodation in your eating habits but it will be worth it in the end. You will be able to maintain your natural teeth that are worn through the enamel loss. You can still take minor snack/grazing breaks. Good luck

The primary purpose of Invisalign and braces isn’t cosmetic. They are intended to fix issues with the bite and other functional problems. Teeth get straightened in that process but the primary function is to fix bite and other functional issues. If you have no issues with bite and no other functional issues, you don’t need invisalign or braces unless, of course, you want them for cosmetic purposes.

Best tips I can give use: 1. Use those special Corega cleaning tablets for aligners, 2. Chewies, and 3. Take supplements for stronger nails. With every new aligner, my nails would break off again when trying to remove them during the first few days. And you will develop over time no shame with puling them out in public when you want to drink or eat something. I love to drink tea and snack, so no loss of weight (unfortunately). I would just eat more during the free hours ;-). I would not ask a dentist for advice but always an orthodontist. My teeth would hurt and I would avoid eating hard fruit like apples, especially in the beginning with the first 1-5 aligners. So maybe not let that be a strong decision influencer. Myself and a lot of other 45+ colleagues at work did regret the Invisalign journey, mostly due to the hassle of taking them out and in again. My Invisalign journey was originally 7 months (the Lite version) but took another 7 months for refinements. And now I have to at least wear my retainer full-time for another 3 to 6 months to make sure that new bone is created and they don’t move back. I am so over it to be honest. I have an overbite so it is far from ‘invisible’. And almost every tooth had an attachment so when I was not wearing them during a night out or a date, it was still very clear something was going on with my teeth. Both my dentist and orthodontist forgot to mention these attachments. Some of my teeth were stripped to make space and when you sign the waiver, it is not a great feeling to see the risks you’ve taken on. Never liked to kiss when having them in so they were not great for my dating journey.

As my orthodontist said “Welcome to your new Normal” and it did very much become that, quite soon. I actually missed having them in once my journey was over.

Is the coke anything to do with the lack of enamel? Sounds rubbish, sorry you’re having to get braces. I quite fancy Invisalign but my teeth are really wonky.

Who complained about your teeth? The gap is delightful. I have to wear a mouth guard at night because I’ve already broken one tooth (luckily back and non painful) grinding my teeth 😅😭 so I get it. Teeth are the real thing you can’t live with, can’t live without

As others here, I love your gap. Like dimples, I always think it gives a person a very youthful appearance. Personally I never had braces, don't have a gap and my teeth are rather straight naturally. But I do have a slight overbite, and it frankly has never ever bothered me whatsoever. Rather an overbite than Habsburgian underbite :). But I never considered braces for a cosmetic reason.... Hold on, that's a lie! When I was in elementary school, other kids had braces, so I too wanted braces and fashioned them out of paperclips, so I could fit in with the cool kids. :). Instead, I was a nerdy and scrawny kid with cheap glasses and a paperclip in her mouth. 🤣
