This week I hit 9 months as an unloader on the early AM shift. My name goes on the transfer list to become a driver on Tuesday. From there it should only be 1-3 months until I transfer up to drive. It took me about 2 full months to get physically used to unloading, and now that I’m efficient at it I actually love it. I would never unload for more than 2 years. I am a 30 year UPS employee. I’ve been a driver for 23 years. I was hired in 1993 part-time making $8/hr. It took 7 years for me to get a driving position. We are Teamsters at UPS so moving up is always based on seniority. Back then it took a long time to move up high enough to get a drivers job. After the strike in 1997 UPS had to create full-time jobs and then the list to become a driver started to move a lot faster. UPS is a very demanding company to work for, both physically and mentally but it is well worth it. Currently our top rate is $41.54/hr and that goes up every August 1st. We pay nothing for our healthcare and have a really good pension. You’ll hear UPS drivers complain a lot but in the end UPS has given me a great life and I consider myself very fortunate to have spent the last 30 years wearing brown.

UPS does hire people off the street to become drivers. I started as a package handler and worked that for about 5 months and after that I became a driver. Started my 30 day probation right in the first week of peak so it was tough and I got lucky because some drivers had to wait a year to start driving. Here in CA top pay is 40 and at first it was tough the cradle on my training package car didn’t work so I had no gps. I had to learn the streets on my own but it’s a great career to get into. I got hired off the street during the pandemic, usually they hire drivers from within but I guess they needed drivers, I'm about to hit 2 years and this company has been ok to me, the insurance is supposedly one of the best but I haven't really used it so idk but the pay is great, the hours suck if you aren't a hard worker, i normally work from 9am-7:45 with one 1 hour unpaid lunch, sometimes they force you to work 6 days but it's based on seniority so they force from the bottom up .... one good thing is that if they work you over 9.5 hours for more than 3 days in a week you can file a grievance because of that and you get payed overtime rate for every hour you work over the 9.5 hours.... so basically triple pay..... starting driver pay is 21, 1 year 23, 2 years 24, 3 years 28.75, 4 years is top pay at 40.50

Every 6 drivers that are hired at UPS they have to hire 1 off the street. From what I have seen almost every off the street hire is just a supervisor that quits and they hire him/her for the position. It gives them someone who is fairly familiar with the position that they can trust moving forward. I also see it as a way they can spy on the driving force by placing in a former supervisor in within them.
