Excellent! Congrats on passing! That bend must have scared the crap out of you! Jay didn’t want me to use wood in the Vice so it was metal on metal which upped my stress. I will be sharing a similar video later this week with my process!! Thanks for sharing yours! -Matt

If you don’t sharpen your knife and go right to shaving arm hairs with it, then how do you know its sharp!? 🤣🤣🤣
@TheBootyWrangler2 жыл бұрын
What lol Shaving your arm to make sure you’re finished sharpening is a test older than time itself. There’s a reason that there is the colloquial phrase “shaving sharp” that is used to describe an extremely sharp knife. It’s incredibly safe to shave using a knife blade and is no different from using a razor or straight razor. Up until the 60s that’s how everyone shaved in all of history!

Will, for your quench tubes- weld a circle of metal mesh to a long rod with a hook to hang on the lip. If you drop that mesh and rod in the oil bath first, you can easily retrieve any items that accidentally go to the bottom of the quench tube by lifting the rod. If you felt fancy, you could make it a basket.

Back in my early days, I made a thin, double edged dagger. I was so excited it came out so thin. So I hardened it...I was SO excited I wanted to go test it. I forgot the key part...temper? It shattered on a wet branch XD. The grain structure is satiny beautiful. Keep the pieces to this day as a reminder.

This is probably one of the most interesting videos you've done for a few reasons. I have always loved watching forged in fire. Not only are you taking us through how those guys became master smiths but you are peripherally explaining the structure and reasoning behind the tests on the show. I know how you feel, my nerves were the same for my pilot's licenses. Good job and congrats.

Nice to see the journeyman blade smith level finally get some recognition here on KZbin. I remember Josh in the blade articles. He was making fire blued liner locks when he was a kid. @FZR6502 жыл бұрын
Will, you need to invest into a water belt grinder that uses diamond belts. It’s the same sander that some use when cutting custom windshields for cars. They work great by keeping the metal cold while grinding your blades as it floods the grinding area with water.
@michaeljacobson93972 жыл бұрын
Will, great work. Might I suggest using that same steel grate you used for your tool rack on your quench tank and make a plate or basket welded to a thin rod that goes to the bottom of the quench take so if you drop something you are quenching it is easier to pull it back up as you can just raise the plate/basket out to get it. Happy Making!

Will, I have some advice about testing the sharpness of your knife. I am a woodworker and luthier (violin-maker) and used to test my sharpened chisels and gouges on arm/wrist hair until I heard that was unsafe. I thought I was safe enough. Well, I asked a few doctors I know and they said that testing sharpness against skin brings a LOT of people to the ER. I think it was Jonathan Katz-Moses that I learned about this from and he says to test against the edge of a sheet of paper (printer paper). Please heed this warning so we can continue getting great content!

This was super cool to see! A swordsmith I used to know did some similar tests once. Because it was a sword, they did a full circle, tip to tang. The idea was that you could do a full circle in one direction, then a full circle in the other direction, with ideally no deformation. He tested a few blades and got to the point where there was a tiny bit after the second bend, which he was very pleased with.
