It’s Christmas Eve 2024. This video is 8 yrs old. But glad I found it. I agree. I hate Christmas and dread it every year. The pressure to buy gifts for everyone, the consumerism, watching all the neighbors putting up the same holiday lights and decorations every year, all the commercials with jingle bells in the background, fake snow, Lexus cars with red ribbons around them. I hate it all. The happiest day of the year: December 26th. Glad to see all these comments and know that I may be in the minority as a person who despises Christmas, but I’m not alone. I just fake it. I love summer.

I stopped gift-exchange completely. I told my loved ones, who are my honey and my surrogate Mom, who is my honey's Mom, that I don't want any gifts ever for anything and I am not getting gifts for anyone for anything ever. No birthday gifts, no Christmas gifts, none for valentines, etc. None! Once I did that, and it took a long time to finally get it done, I was far more happy. I detested buying gifts! Even if it was just a symbolic whatever gift, I hated doing this for a variety of reasons. But what I hated even more was trying to get meaningful and sensible gifts! It was way too much work. Forget it! I'm ecstatic to be rid of this. If I feel like getting a gift I may still get it for someone, but not for some "holiday" and never under "social obligation".

Julie: A really meaningful gift does take a lot of work. I had a young boy I used to babysit who was my best friend, like a grandchild to me. One Christmas I wrote him a poem starring him doing battle with an evil green elf. Other times I made treasure hunts, where each clue was a little rhyme leading to yet another clue. The most elaborate one I did required him to listen to part or most of certain Beatle songs. There were big envelopes with cartoons pasted on them that corresponded with a lyric of each song. Some were simple, like a walrus, a yellow submarine. They got more difficult as it went on. A labor of love, sure, but exhausting nonetheless. Doing something like that for everyone on a gift list would be impossible. Generally speaking, just figuring out what to get people is big headache. The term "holiday" is a misnomer. You might get time off of work, but man you need it -- to cook, shop, boil and decorate eggs; endure some big family gathering. If you're married, double that. There are only two holidays worthy of the name: Memorial Day and Labor Day. The family gathering may still loom over some of us, but by and large, you get a day off work without having to cook a bunch of shit, exchange gifts, send cards, decorate anything or wear a costume. It's nice to have a genuine day OFF.

I used to love christmas as a kid but have grown to hate it as an adult now. Of course, you loose a bit of the magic because you "see behind the scenes" and have to prepare stuff but it's not that. It's actually my family who makes it annoying for me. Helping with preparing everything is not the problem, it's the fact that it's mandatory. It's not "can you help me this?" "Not now, but later" "thank you" it's rather: "can you help me with this?" "Not now, but later" "oh come on, I bet you can do this one thing. Don't be so lazy." Also, my mother and grandmother invite my uncle and cousin. I don't have a problem with that, it's nice seeing them from time to time. But then my grandmother tells them that they don't have to drive and someone will pick them up so that they can drink at our place. Only after that does she ask me if I would be okay with driving them. It's too late to say no then and a no would cause an argument. Christmas dinner gets longer and longer every year. My uncle and cousin don't leave at like 9 or 10 pm, they stay until 1 or 2 am. I am a person who gets tired as soon as it gets dark, so at like 5 pm. They're also drunk at that time and can't keep personal space. Even though they're not "my" guests, I can't stand up and leave earlier as I would get yelled at for that. The next day will also be fully planned out, with more dinners, more work for me ecen though I didn't do the plan and just get dragged along, and no time for myself at all again. Third day is the same. I want tje simplicity of old christmas back, where guests wouldn't stay so insanely long and I didn't have to go somewhere for anorher insane amount of time. Old christmas where I was allowed to leave early and say no without feeling guilty. Old christmas that I was excited about and didn't dread.

Christmas is forced on people & if you don't like it its like you are a social outcast. It can be a very difficult time for a lot of people who may not have family or who are struggling with money. And from a religious perspective it is completely inaccurate as Christ wasn't even born on the 25th of December. I think it's time attitudes changed to this festival & we started teaching Children the truth. Isn't that what Jesus would have really wanted!
@MeadeSkeltonMusic7 жыл бұрын
How do you know that Jesus Christ wasn't born on December 25th? We really don't know his birth date, but that isn't even the point of Christmas. We honor and celebrate his birth at that time.
@jchisholm19687 жыл бұрын
How come you don't know? Its common knowledge that the 25th of December is actually the Winter Solstice. The Romans changed the date they believed was Jesus's Birthday to a Pagan Festival to facility the masses acceptance of the new faith. This allowed the people to continue celebrating their pagan festivals. Easter is another example of this. I am sure that Chocolate Eggs & Bunny Rabbits have little to do with the Crucifixion of Christ & more to do with fertility. And of course you are more than welcome to celebrate whatever mumbo jumbo you like on any day of the year you choose. Equally so I will choose not to!
@MeadeSkeltonMusic7 жыл бұрын
And you would be wrong. And you have it backwards, too. Pagans stoled Christmas celebrations from early Christians, not the other way 'round. Pagans were worried about the spread of Christianity and wanted to take over their traditions. Regardless, most of our modern day Christmas traditions come from 16th Century Germany under Martin Luther. Everything from the Christmas tree to the lights on the tree- all Christian symbols. Even if Jesus wasn't born on December 25th , what would that matter? The point is to acknowledge his birth and celebrate it. In tradition, Christmas is not just one day, but actually 12 days of feasting and gift giving.
@jchisholm19687 жыл бұрын
Originally Emperor Constantine changed the date of Jesus's birth to coincide with the december celebration of Sol. However this was made official by Pope Julian in the late 4th Century. The original festival was called Dies Natalis Solis Invicti means 'birthday of the unconquered sun' and was held on December 25th. So the Birth of the Sun was replaced by the Birth of the Son. Hence the reason that Christians worship on a Sunday. Solstice means the Sun stays still & on the 21st or 22nd of December the Sun appears to stay still on the Southern Crux (Cross) Constellation for 3 days. Ring any bells! And on the 25th the Sun is reborn!

Same here man. Christmas was the best when I was a kid. All through my 20’s I didn’t particularly love it, but I liked it. I still looked forward to it. When you start working for a living, Christmas loses some of its magic, it’s not 2 weeks of playing games and vacation anymore. All through my 20’s I had a girl at Christmas. The last one I dated for 7 years, and I loved spending holidays with her. This year marks 10 years since the last time I was in a good relationship around Christmas, since then it’s been nothing but misery. I’ve never had anyone around that I wanted to spend time with, I became increasingly more unhappy and depressed when thanksgiving would come around, and the last 3 years I was involved with a woman that I loved. Head over heels was in love with her, and she turned out to be a head case. Suffered from NPD and Borderline, she made the last 3 years of my life an emotional rollercoaster of absolute misery. I now have a 6 year old son, which helps a little around Christmas, but every time this holiday comes around, family togetherness and happiness is shoved down your throat, and at 40, I see that family life that I wanted so badly slipping away forever. I’ll never have that, and that’s the worst part about it for me. Being depressed and having everyone around you telling you to be happy and thankful. Plus I hate Christmas music.

Just kill me now. Christmass is almost here and I am fucking exhausted just fro all the "anticipation"

I know I've finally got 'old' as I've stopped enjoying christmas. I used to love it, then loved just making my little niece and nephews happy. I still do that now as I want them to enjoy it. But this year was the first that I really just wanted to be over so I could be left alone. Life is sh*t in general, so maybe that's why. But the magic has completely gone.

I suppose I loved Christmas as a child because of the many presents. But even then, there was a small feeling of emptiness in the pit of my stomach. I've known all along that there was something terribly wrong with Christmas; I just couldn't articulate it. Something my mother told me might have offered a clue. She heard on the news that a woman shot and killed her friend for refusing to loan her money so she could get Christmas gifts for her kids. Another clue: A terrible dream I had about the 2-year-old twin sisters of my playmate down the block. It was a snowy night, and the twins were put in an ambulance that drove away slowly with no lights flashing. There was no sound in the dream save soft Christmas music. I was just old enough to participate in the dreaded Christmas shopping experience when I saw a woman who had collapsed in the middle of a packed department store. Her little girl was crumpled beside her on the floor, bawling her eyes out. Then I had my own little girl. The wrongness of piling lie upon lie to keep the Santa Claus myth afloat, the anxiety over possibly disappointing her. Then in 1993, at 17, my only child died in a car accident. This began an odd statistical cluster of mostly immediate but a couple of secondary family members dying. The only good thing about it has been the freedom from participating in this EVIL holiday disguised in sparkles, lights, ribbons and bows. Christmas is an abomination. If its namesake were here today, he'd be chasing people through Walmart with a whip of cords.

I don't like the commercialisation of it. I really think it's ridiculous to try and buy people presents who knows? It's an awful waiste of money generally but children should get something. You get distant relatives you don't hear from in months phoneing you up. It's so false, most of the year no thought at all but as it's christmas I presume they start thinking about goodwill to all men and all that festive stuff. I supose it's as most of the year there's no pressure to be caring or think of others. The anagram of santa is satan so is that just a coincidence? It's nice that people get a break from work. I just think it's disapointing people generally are so influenced by media.

When I was 18, I started stating to my family that I hate Christmas. I'm 20 years old & I still loathe that namby-pamby holiday. The reasons why I hate Christmas is because When I was a little boy, I would often be berated for believing in Santa Claus, I also find the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials to be so stupid & I even hate that people still believe the lie that Jesus Christ was born during it when we all know for a fact that he wasn't. Palestinian Winters are too cold & the sheperds wouldn't have spent time outside. It actually came from the Roman Holiday Saturnalia where Ancient Romans would exchange gifts, beat their wives, drank & other things. I also hate it because one time, I had a nitemare during the same holiday back in 2016 where I died & I went down to Hell for eternity & I felt so bad about it. I also believe your statement was One Hundred Percent accurate.

My earliest vivid recollection of Christmas is 1961 aged just 4. I was very excited on Christmas Eve, so I must have had some recollections from the previous one in 1960, though I can't recall it anymore. It always began with making the tree and putting the decorations up a week or so before, which was exciting, and it stayed that way up to and including 1968, then, what with grandparents dying and fewer people around by now, it slowly got worse and worse, until by the late 70s I was living alone and began to despise it, especially as it held such fond memories during the 60s. I've never put up decorations since leaving my childhood home in the 1970s. I also find that some people send me poorer standard cards, and you know it's sent as one of the least inspirational cards in the pack (a fucking candle for eg) because that's how they value me in their pecking order.... but then you feel obliged to send them one in return.... and you sense that when they open it they'll be disappointed because they were rather hoping it was from someone they valued more. Then there's the people who don't really know you who ask you what you're doing for Christmas, and then they'll ask you if you had a good one afterwards, and you know they say that to everyone and couldn't care a toss... but you feel obliged to make a similar comment in return. But as a child it was great, and the looking at the TV books at what was on over the period was so exciting too, because there were only 2 or 3 channels back then, and throughout the year transmission began later in the day and ended before midnight, but then suddenly you had all this extra stuff on at Christmas. I wrote a song in 1982 looking back, and called it Young Snow Song: Sing me a song of so long ago When years were long and I loved the snow Take me by night to a Christmas so cold One that stays white in lonely hearts that grow old White were the roofs and dark were the skies I watched his moves, I saw with my eyes Take me along, come reindeer and oh, ... I loved you , I loved you, I loved the snow. I would be there if my wish were upon a star Young and free there, but my wishes don''t get that far, a memory's all you are Chilly winter sky, cold weather Time will pass me by, should snow ever fall again. Solo + Now and then I see that star... but a memory is all you are... So sing me a song of so long ago When years were long and I loved the snow Take me by night to a Christmas so cold One that stays white in lonely hearts that grow old One that stays white in lonely hearts that grow old It stays white in lonely hearts, hearts that grow old.

I don't have that song up anyway. I had a few others, but they weren't getting hardly any views. The only people watching were people I didn't want to be watching.

It's the day after Christmas 2024 and thank goodness it is over. I enjoyed Christmas as a young child, but as I became older, with each subsequent year, the ailments of life just sapped every ounce of joy and happiness from it. I've reached a point where I absolutely dread the holiday. I wish I could press a fast forward button on life and skip past it. My mother has Alzheimer's and her memory started to get worse just before the holiday this year- the holiday just added more stress on her and everyone trying to help her. In addition to that, every single person in my family is experiencing various serious health issues that coincide with aging. Parkinson's, complications from diabetes... someone is trapped in a unhappy marriage, etc... Over it, over it, over it- done.

Take the father Christmas, presents the food and drink and bury the lot under the bloody tree outside. I never give or accept presents on specific days. I do not like to be told when I should give a gift to someone. You never know if you or that person is going to be around to give or receive it. Christmas is just like every other day.
