If you haven’t, I highly recommend pulling the oil cooler and cleaning the reservoir+replace the screen. That is the last line of defense and typically repeat failures will show the screen has been compromised under the oil cooler. Ford sells the oil cooler base gasket separately for reinstall.

LMLs are straight trash. Literally every single problem from 2001-2010 combined into one huge POS. Fuel system problems came back, head gasket problems came back, pistons still crack, and the crankshafts are even worse. Never understood the allure for those trucks. Worst Duramax made in my opinion. Miss me with that Allison defuel too, feels like shit. And now the 10L is even worse in it’s own way. They can hold decent power without studs, the IFS is nice when it’s unmolested, and the Allison works well for a stock truck; other than that, I don’t miss my LBZ truck one bit.

I think you are 110% spot on with everything you said in this video. The allison is overrated and always has been, but that doesn't mean it's a bad transmission... The name makes people overlook its faults for sure. Most customers of mine think I'm crazy when i say I'd take a stock 6r140 over any other stock transmission, and probably a built 48 over any other built trans.. People ask me Why and i say this. My breakdown is as follows: 6r140s = bodybuilder, strong, calm, composed, and know what's expected of them, Allison's = 23 year old on roids, randomly strong with mood swings sometimes throwing tantrums/weights and likes screaming at people, 68s = late 20s in good shape, knows how to talk to women, and is quick witted and knows where he wants to be in 5 years. 5r110 is like an older brother to the 68.

I was sadly disappointed when I bought the early 98 (12v p pump). I had already Allison swapped my late 1st gen (91.5). This going into neutral whenever you let off the throttle is bs in mountainous territory, nearly wrecked the1st time 98 coming down a steep grade into a 25mph corner and lost all engine braking causing me to have to overload the service brakes. Allison on same grade towing the 2nd gen (16010lbs) barely even used the service brakes the motor and Trans did all the work. A stock GVWR rating of 42k lbs vs 16k( 1000 vs518) was a selling point. Yes it drives like a clutchless manual ( C-7corvet twin-clutch)but stronger.

@Jim Killen same same . Do 17" wheels fit over the big brakes? If yes what backspace? ( I need a spare and 3rd gen steelies have too much backspace. Pinion was out when I bought the 2nd gen 98.1. I got an axle from a local shop that was moving for 100. Score. Calipers were seized so new brake hardware was needed. Got loaded Calipers ( Caliper, pad, and brackets)and rotors from Napa for an 08. It's a little help. Not what I was expecting way less. My79 K-20 got JB5 (2⅝ piston) to JB7 ( 3¼" piston) with stock 11x1.25 rotors, Stoped way better than this dodge... Rear disk con. using JB5 calipers w/stock proportioning valve was perfect match. Could lock up all 4 while towing the 5er at 23000 GCVW(7K×16K ) AND OUT STOP CARS empty, This pissed off a few break checking Karen's.

@Jim_Lawrence Жыл бұрын
I don't have a 6.4 so take this for what it's worth... They have more problems than just pistons, and parts are among the most expensive. That K16 is an animal, but the fuel system can fail and is expensive to replace. The turbos can be problematic, and they create a ton of backpressure, so if it's performance a T4 swap is the norm I believe. Lifters can let loose to and trash the motor, as can the 6.0. If it's still emissions on, the regen cycles wash the rear cylinders. Not only that, but now tuning may be hard to come by? Just things to research/think about...
@nativeoutdoors1780 Жыл бұрын
@@Jim_Lawrence coming from an owner and a buddy of mine owned one years back and we both love our trucks, they are deleted, emissions cause most if not all problems like oil dilution and pistons. Definitely don’t disagree with you. My lly has been great since studded, had the transmission go out randomly and put a suncoast stage 3 kit in it with goerend converter shifts good with the tuning done on it but I can’t get over how a cummins shifts. One second my truck will be shifting hard and the next second it’s sloppy on the gear changes.

Sounds like u got a trans issue... Or poor tune... Cummins tend to shift harder cause a Cummins doesn't defuel during shifts is my understanding

I love Duramax and both my LMLs of course deleted cp3 turbo tune trans etc etc Every truck has its pros and cons i guess.

In my opinion I would buy a brand new ford instead of a brand new Duramax or Cummins. The newer fords seem to be built much better these days but Chevy and Rams like they look nice and everything but they're built like garbage nowadays.

I like what you said “like what you like”. I love Obs 7.3s. We will never be able to hold a candle to common rail technology. But there is something to be said about how easy they are to work on. Do you guys ever get 7.3s in the shop?

I think you're right on the Allison. I am planning on swapping a 6 speed behind my 550ish hp 7.3. I want the double overdrive, and nobody makes 6R140 swap parts and controllers. For daily and occasional towing, a mildly built Allison with a good converter I'm hoping is the ticket. No defuel on shifts, because engine and trans won't talk. Or maybe I'm retarded...

Defuel on shift is essential for transmission life... do a zf6 instead, totally bulletproof transmission, and nothings cooler than an old stick shift diesel 😎
@Jim_Lawrence Жыл бұрын
@@alanack67 No it isn't. This isn't uncharted territory, and they live fine. That's one of those old wives' tales that you need a defuel to live, at least at the power level I'm at. Now, you do need to upgrade clutches and increase line pressure. Basic performance build and a good billet stator converter is my plan. Those are generally rated to 750 hp. I also have a zf6 truck. The problem with that is the same as the current 4R100. Not enough overdrive. The 4R is .71, ZF6 is .72, but the Allison has a .71 5th gear and a .61 6th gear. For a road trip Excursion, adding another overdrive gear is the reasoning. And the wife can't drive stick. Remember I'm not looking for a competition or dedicated tow rig. It's mostly a daily.

6r140 with a PCS would work
@Jim_Lawrence Жыл бұрын
@horsetorquesdiesel someone make an adapter plate? I'll look more into it I guess. Also wonder how good the tuning is, never heard of anyone doing stand alone 6R140. Cummins swap guys?
@Jim_Lawrence Жыл бұрын
@horsetorquesdiesel I have yet to see anything on any controller for a 6R140. Nothing. Not to mention I'd have to machine my own adapter and flexplate to mate it to my 7.3. Closest is US Shift may work on it with their Quick 6 I can use readily available bus/medium duty parts to bolt an Allison up, with an sae 3 bellhousing swap, and there's a few choices for controllers, with any dmax Tuner is able to tune it.

Essentially everything in this video has to do with doing stuff with these trucks that they are not designed to do, regardless of the platform. I do have to agree with the ifs not being able to take abuse as well and cp4’s being trash.
