Oh the irony. Thank you for watching this, as it is my first spoken word piece ever. Follow me on Instagram @corderoroman because I measure my worth as a human based on my number of followers. Subscribe here: bit.ly/13p4t5f
Download my free rap EP "Why?" here: www44.zippyshar... or stream it: / corderoroman
"Why I Hate Social Media" was originally meant to be just a video talking to the camera but I wanted to challenge myself and try something new, so I started to write from a spoken word perspective, and this was the final result. It sums up a lot of my thoughts regarding social media, ranging from how we portray ourselves in a particular light to its detrimental effect on our emotional health to its emphasis on popularity and most importantly, how valuable it is for my own personal endeavors.
Approaching this from a spoken word perspective allowed me to be more creative with my language and give a more rhythmic fluidity that felt more creative and artistic as opposed to just ranting. Having never done spoken word before, I'm not actually sure if I did it correctly or not haha. So if anyone disagrees with the spoken word nature of this video, I apologize because I had no real idea what I was doing.
At the end of the day, it's going to be really fucking hard for me to walk away from social media and its importance in my life, for both personal and professional reasons, and I know that it would be foolish to think any differently. But the goal of this spoken word video was to just be a reminder that the world is immense and vast, and to stay confined with our head down, ignoring it, is foolish and really shortchanging our experience as humans.
So once you get done watching this video and reading this, go explore. Go sit down and talk to a friend. Go hug a stranger. Just enjoy everything that the three dimensional world has to offer.
Thank you for watching,
Cordero Roman

He's damn right about that jealousy that social media causes. I deleted my Instagram account because I was SICK of seeing happy couples, friends hanging out, and people going places when I was single, lonely, and unable to travel. I would end up being jealous and bitter everyday all day and that is just a heavy cloud on me and I ended up feeling depressed. So I just deleted it, I felt there was no point in me having an account when all I was able to post was pathetic selfies in my bedroom since I had no boyfriend, friends, or a car to travel the world. I now only have a KZbin with no content.

LeAnn Mitchell I understand that feeling but the truth is, that's what life is really made of. Even it's not on social media, we may see it in reality when we go to the park, restaurant etc. The best way is to develop a strong mental strength and believe that your life is the best no matter what. Cause the sad truth is, things can only bother you if you let them to. We can only be depressed, if we allow depression to hit us. So, pick yourself up and see the positive sides of your life. If you've been hit by a bad situation, be sad and move on. Most importantly, Be in charge of your happiness!

Thank you guys so much for all the positivity! I had no idea how this would be received and it gives me motivation to keep writing. And for those interested in the actual prose, here you go! :) "We carefully construct pieces of feigned happiness and put them on display to stay relevant. What is truth and why are we so afraid of telling it? Because we might disrupt this embellished façade that’s ever so delicate? It encourages a sick fascination with fabrication. We cower behind a digital shroud, avoiding authenticity like it isn’t allowed so we can appease the critical crowd that’s bitterly proud? It’s not worth it. It’s okay to not evoke astonishment through constant accomplishment. I’m so sick of seeing cozy pictures of couples posing when in this world, the real one, they’re on the verge of breaking up. Most of the shit we spew, we’re making up and it’s start we start waking up because we refuse to accept the fact that we’re fake as fuck.To portray life without flaws or imperfections, down to the cuticle, is to negate the very essence of what makes this life beautiful. Now when we log on, it’s got us sad and depressed, mad and distressed, it’s adding to stress and my own mother knows that that isn’t best. Making us feel like our lives are static and less. We scroll endlessly through other people having fun, jealous they’re doing things we haven’t done and like a magic sponge, soak up all this imagery until we take a tragic plunge and suffocate under our own envy with gasping lungs. We’re accepting this notion that it’s viable to validate our existences with data that’s quantifiable, but the undeniable truth is that it’s far from reliable. Stressing numbers over content, it’s no wonder we’re despondent, because no matter how obvious it may seem, we still hunger for this nonsense. We’re being duped into believing that life is hollow without a bunch of likes and follows. I pray for a world where numbers are irrelevant and people live in three dimensions, where we don’t feed off tension or bleak dissention or need a mention to see attention or seek ascension. But the choice is ours: do we want to live free or fenced in? We’re no longer people. It’s odd to see that now we’ve got to be on this cultural odyssey to become profitable commodities, brainwashed by this consumerist philosophy that now shoddily embodies me. We’re brands. We’re not people. We’re brands. And I don’t know how the hell that happened. We’re depicting what we think people want vs. what we feel we should be vs. even worse, who we truly are. Wishing on shooting stars to be as important as movie stars because we all know dogs only chase the moving cars. We focus our energy on taking one piece of an identity, transforming it into an entity and saying “that’s what it’s meant to be.” But take a risk. Be yourself. Don’t be an expectation because the moment you embrace who you are, I guarantee you’ll find some glee and exultation. But the biggest reason why I hate social media is that I can’t escape it. I can’t take it. I feel like the world’s biggest hypocrite, Lord knows I got my iPhone 6, lifting it to take the daily selfie when deep down inside, I know no one really gives a shit. That’s why I wrote this, in hopes that I could flip a switch or at least come to grips with it because frankly, I’m getting really fucking sick of it. I check up on my phone more than I check up my own. My own mom, my own pops, my own grandpa who’s dying slowly. Social media is like a drug, got me feeling high then lowly, and I contemplate if I’m the only one who wonders why I’m lonely? I’m enslaved and I’m trapped. I can’t be trained or change the way I behave or adapt because the fact is my brain is still engrained in this crap. I made this video to be shared on social media…so what does that tell you? I’m on this never-ending spiral, fiending to go viral, dreaming of being some teenager’s idol. And without that, I have no purpose, feeling worthless. Is an audience really worth this? I’ve been defeated by this desire that’s deep seeded to crave nothing more than to be retweeted. I feel like a martyr inside, at least a part of me’s died because no matter how hard that I’ve tried, at the end of this video…I still want you all to subscribe. I know I’m bad at this but life isn’t about subscribers. It isn’t about followers. It isn’t about statuses. It’s not about quantity. It’s about quality. Quality of friendship, quality of love, quality of experience. Not about a bunch of temporary networks that are making us go delirious. We’ll never know the power of one laugh, one conversation or one hug until we put our phones down and simply unplug. All I ask is that we walk away from our screens and embrace this whole thing. This whole fucking world with irreplaceable scenes. Because in our final hour, when our head knows that death’s close, what do you think we’ll be reflecting on? Our best times or our best posts?"

I am a hypocrite Cordero, as I live my life by computer and TV, but I so often feel like lying in a cool mountain stream and just watching the world pass by! Can anyone now take a walk in the park without chatting or taking pictures on their mobile phone?! I have not got a mobile phone but if I had one I am sure I'd become fixated with the damn thing! The composer Andrew Lloyd Webber ( b.1948 ) has not got a computer or mobile phone and he is a very much in demand genius! Are you a genius, Cordero?! You are certainly a magnificent wordsmith! And almost a philosopher just by that poem! Maybe you are a philosopher anyway?! The Beatles' song 'The Fool On The Hill' says is the fool ( on the hill ) alienated or is it us I our daily mundane lives, who never see the beauty of nature or the sun set or rise! The Beatles' song 'Nowhere Man' from the album 'Rubber Soul' from 1965 asks a similar question, and I always remember the Orang-U-Tang at the zoo. Is it us the race by in our caged worlds that are the more caged animals?! Love your poem, Cordero! With Best Wishes! Man Made Schizophrenia is all around us! With Best Wishes! Cheers - Mike.

+Cordero Roman Hey Cordero, very interesting piece. Perhaps not as ironic as it first would seem. I would see you having the same struggle with your medium as every artist does, lifting the mundane and trivial into something elevated - emotion, feeling, insight, truth. Films have been one of our greater art forms, now in decline but originally a trite novelty. Who's to say social media won't be format of great works of the 21st century. People laughing at that should remember people felt the same way about film at bottom end of 20C until DW Griffith etc came along. Remember, if you're real, your work is real.

The biggest reason I hate social media is because after watching this so many will forget the message, we all need to change before it's too late. Live your life, don't record it on snapchat, live your life, don't conform to an artificial world where you're not even true to yourself, you're mind is the most powerful tool in this universe, is the Internet worth it's time?

Why do crave something that makes you sad. Learn the only way to be happy is to remove the things that make you depressed. I had to remove religion from myself because it caused a lot of depression. No matter how hard you try to be happy it won't happen if your letting things that don't matter. Remember when you die what will you be looking back at the greatest memories or all the time you wasted on social media. Put the phone down and understand these things are only here to distract us from what truly matters.... Life. Please don't take this message in bad way because the only thing that I am trying to do is help.

I've seen multiple "Why I hate social media" videos & spoken words & while they're all great & send a good message, you're the only one who has ever pointed out the irony & confronted yourself on camera about the struggle of being sucked into social media. It's like the entire second half of this made it that much more relatable because yeah, we can all agree social media is a trap, but how many of us do something about it or even express that we are caged in? You're amazing for this, man. I hope this gets out & people get the message.

This is without a doubt the most true and best video that I have ever watched. Numbers of likes you get doesn't matter but it affects each one of us and how we feel. This new age of social media has influenced us to wear that constant mask that has no flaws and that we are perfect in every single way. I was addicted to social media but i have tried to stop going on it since 2 weeks ago and I feel like a much better person and more confident. More people need to try this because social media is affecting us as people and our ability to communicate in an efficient manner and being good people. Just focus on the people around you that love you so very much instead of commenting and liking people's statuses on social media that you barely even meet. That's all

+AwkwardAlexis On social media you have to show who is the boss. If you are too polite - particularly towards atheists and coincidence theorists and snake oil salesmen and people like that - they try to find your strong points and make them look weak and then try to attack you. To retaliate successfully you wait for months for the right rude target to retailate against and then strike the poorest target. This encourages the others to stop sending you inflammatory b.s and also increases the reputation of some social media.

I've never commented on a video in my life, but I felt compelled to do so. Cordero Roman, you're going places. Forget about the Prince EA comment from the other guy, your depth blow his breadth out of the park, not to mention your angle on the subject and delivery with Tupac vibe and Eminem rhyme. As it extends from your previous video on why you shouldn't let anyone dash your dream of rapping, it makes me think you've got much more hidden talent and material in the works waiting to be showcased at the right time. I watched a 3 min video a week ago and I knew right away you could be the next big thing. Awkwardedness and self-comedy value is dead these days, but to me it's the ultimate source of good humour. Your videos remind me of the early days of Sacha Baron Cohen and Simon Pegg, I'm talking the year 2000 kind of early. Kayvan Novak, another talent like you, hasn't really taken off yet, but keep an eye on him as I do you. I've never subscribed to any channel, and I keep true to my principle so don't intend to start now. But you my friend, you don't need my subscription, you will have the world at your fingertips in no time if you keep it up and play it right. Keep making these videos and refining your trade for another year or so, then find some real backing and make it big.

This is so beautifully raw. Amazing for your first spoken word! Speaks directly to the adolescent and young adult generations. It's hard to believe how we create false realities to try and make people like us from the Internet, when we could just walk outside and interact with real people on a genuine level! Even just a simple introduction can lead to an amazing friendship. It's time we stop trying to become popular over social media, because at the end of the day, we are not the fabulous persona that our followers have grasped to. That person does not exist. Can we all just come to the consensus that nobody has the perfect life? We are all tragically and beautifully broken, and that is why we crave affection and attention. Social media is not the right place to seek it.

I respect your words and completely see the effect social media has on society, families sitting and waiting for food but heads stuck in social media screens instead of sharing daily stories and poetry. See I admire your truth and boldness that you preach at the same time you beat your own rhythm down into the ground! "We're not people any more, We're not people we're brands".... but the the brand you portray is the very same thing your getting really fucking sick of. Again as I say I admire your truth and Boldness and you already know this but are talents are more than social media screens and retweets? without these very things, I wouldn't be writing this and your inspired lyrics may have fallen on dumb ears. So let's just embrace this the future, the machine let social media be because at the end it gave people like you and me the opportunity to be free and succeed. Keep up the good work!

What a beautiful piece! I find your words to be so relateable. I've had so many experiences becoming so depressed as I browse through social media, looking at post upon post and picture upon picture of other people having a great time doing exciting things while I sit at home and have a "boring" life with few friends. I can't help but feel jealous and like I am a lesser being when I look at all of the "popular" people who are constantly posting pictures of their exciting, grandiose lives and being showered with likes and praise. Meanwhile, my meager posts hardly ever get much attention. I would say that this video is greatly underrated and it deserves so much more views, but that would contradict the point you were trying to make.

This is such an important message. Thanks for the video :) I once went on a date with a guy who had his phone out the entire meal, and was constantly looking down at it and scrolling through messages. Such a turn off. I totally agree that we need to unplug sometimes and enjoy moments for what they are. Ever go to a concert and usually you'll see the vast majority of people recording the concert on their cellphones instead of just enjoying themselves...what's the point of recording something just to show your friends later if you can't even remember how it went since you were so preoccupied with making sure it was caught on film? I get wanting to be able to look back on incredible experiences, but some people take it too far. If you live in the moment, hopefully the memories will remain with you forever. I've felt for a long time like I was born in the wrong generation. That is to say, I wish I could live in a time where technology didn't monopolize our lives. Maybe that sounds a bit dramatic, but really, it's quite sad to see what technology has done to people. Sure, some things are vital, but other aspects of technology are for the worse. When I was a kid, my brother and I would run around the yard and play games outside that we made up. We'd run wild with our imaginations and have so much fun together. And I'm only 19 now...even back then, when I was little, I didn't see many other kids playing outside. These days I see even fewer kids playing outside. They'd rather play video games, watch TV, etc. I'm all for content creation, but it's the mindlessness of things like watching TV, playing video games, and scrolling through instagram for hours that worry me about this generation and future generations. Not to mention, cell phones and laptops can be a nightmare in schools because so many kids are going on facebook during class and texting friends instead of paying attention and learning. That leads into another point that you brought up in a different video (I think), which is that our attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. Anyways, this comment has gotten long enough, but your video really got me thinking! Your channel is a breath of fresh air.

it's so true , this was so poetic and amazingly written, it's true. The likes and subscriptions shouldn't matter. People should make content to be proud of themselves and for fun. Not for the money or fame it should be because they want to. The goal with KZbin shouldn't be publicity but to provide. Provide advice , happiness, ect. It's true what he said. It's true

Powerful message, i think from time to time we should rethink what we are doing and try to live more than trying to be more. Life is beautiful and you only got 1. It is sad to think that we spend an abnormal amount time trying to be when at the end you are going to regret what you wasted. Lets enjoy life more. Thanks Cordero, you should have a channel in which you speak more. You're a really smart person and i think i speak for a lot of people that we would enjoy that content also.

hey i deleted all of my social media about two weeks ago and it is great. i am no longer a slave to my phone. i no longer check all of my social media constantly and wonder what everyone else is doing. instead i am engaged in what i am doing and i have great conversations with others rather than being in the same room as a friend and not even speaking to each other because of the fact that we are too engaged in what others are doing! i think you should try it because i know you can and i believe in you! we dont need that fake shit! its all about real life and living it!!!!!!
