I feel like the concept you’re taking issue with isn’t actually the concept of art styles, but instead the pressure to stick to one, as we see artists on social media doing. I agree with your points made, but I think that the root cause of these problems is not that “art style” is a term and idea that exists, but that the landscape of online artist culture makes people feel the need to avoid experimenting. Awesome speedpaint in the background by the way!!

Yes! I think an art style truly comes after you’ve done a lot of work in the art progress department, it being the culmination of your knowledge AND your preferences on how to draw things

I definitely agree that the term “art style” could potentially affect the works of younger artists, leading to them sticking to what they feel comfortable with rather than being experimental at trying something new. That’s something I’ve been trying to improve upon whenever I draw art: seeing what aspects I like from other artists and incorporating it into my work. Though, despite this, I still feel like I'm struggling to improve as I continually compare my work to those of my peers, which has definitely impacted my self-esteem… Also, hi, Vurtiny! I didn’t know or just forgot that you had a KZbin channel, and I didn’t find out about it until I was recommended one of your old videos. What about practicing the more important things like the fundementals than focusing on art style? I mean you can draw for fun. Also keep comparing, see what they do better than you or understand why you feel this way towards their art and what you are lacking, maybe even ask of what they think you can improve on so you can stop feeling lacking skill and start feeling confident, this might be crappy advice tho so i am not sure if you should follow it lol just know that art takes time and its not always for everyone.

I see artists constantly saying how "inconsistent" their art style is as if its a bad thing like- i have multiple art styles that change based off my mood and project comic artstyle, full art peices, and random stuff, sometimes im super cartoony, sometimes its anime, sometimes its realistic and rendered, it changes based off what i wanna draw. sometimes i draw eyes like circles, sometimes hair is spikey and sometimes everything is smooth and rounded, sometimes its angular

So, you don't actually hate the term art style, you hate the idea that certain newer artists hyper-focus on trying to master a singular style instead of learning a broader range. Saying that art styles is a bad thing feels... kind of silly. When you're looking to hire an artist for something, them having a particular, known style, is a fantastic thing. As an artist, having mastered something that's unique to you so much that others consider it 'your' style, is unbelievably cool. Trying to get a style without understanding fundamentals is what you seem to actually dislike, I think.

This is... Absolutely a good statement. Like seriously, why did I just waste my time focusing or finding new for my art style and comparing or inspiring some of my favorite artist that I know about, than just being humble and being myself. My so called, "Art Style" can be a real deal and people refers to my style as "Cute" which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. But hey, I guess I have to stay humble and figure out something new for my next art piece and admittedly that I'm only just an artist in the whole internet space. In overall, I accepted your opinion. P.S. Love your Speedpaint Progress, BTW! ^_^

there's a small animation community called the OSC(object show community), this entire thing started off with BFDI in 2010 and the show is still releasing new episodes, if you watch the series you notice that season 1, 2 and 3 have a HR esque style and uses a ton of custom made assets, but season 4 and onwards has a hand-drawn like style that still uses assets but things like limbs, effects and backgrounds are drawn by the artists. the OSC has an infinite amount of styles but a lot of other shows from the community shared not only styles but assets, perfomance, ideas and more, there is drama here and there but the OSC is mostly pretty chill.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a consistent style (I have one!) as long as you also stay free to experiment with it whenever the desire to arises. I love using new mediums or techniques in different drawings, depending on the feeling I'm going for, but overall the result doesn't differ too much from my other works

awesome sauce. i’ve used the term “art style” a lot, but i might change that. people can have their own distinctive style if they feel like it at the time, but they can also just experiment how their brain tells them to. do what you want and you don’t have to stay consistent if you want to. tiktok is even worse when it comes to “art styles”.. *cringes* i hate when people say you “stole” their style. they didn’t really steal it, they just. tried your visual language. imagine if someone said you stole their lingual style by speaking english when you say completely different sentences. that’s how i see it. great video, short and sweet. :D quick edit: why was this such a yap session holy cow
@vurtiny4 күн бұрын
you got it! you can be consistent in practice, but there’s no need to be consistent in style. i don’t even think it’s possible to full take someone’s “style” because we truly are all different. nobody holds their pens the same way, or presses down on their canvas the same amount. if 100 people are told to draw the same exact image, you will always get 100 different versions of that image

I've wanted to pursue a career in art since I was in third grade, and honestly, I feel like art style is one of the only things I didn't struggle with. If I didn't like how my style looked, I'd change it. If I didn't feel like my usual style matched a drawings vibe, I'd use a different one. That kind of mindset has really helped me to improve, I think.

I think an artstyle can be great in some aspects, because you can have things in your art that may not be anatomically correct, but it fits in your drawings. However, you do bring up really good points, because when beginners and even experienced artists focus on trying to find that one specific trait, they can really stunt their growth. I think everyone should try new things, and see what works for them in their art, because everyone learns differently.

You have a good argument honestly and as someone who's trying to learn anatomy I'll take what you said about not forcing yourself to draw things in a certain way into consideration. I know what it feels like to have this amazing art style in your head that you're very far away from having. It can be extremely disappointing and stop you from ever picking up a pencil in the first place. On another note, "Visual language" just feels like a fancier way to say art style, in my opinion. I can see people saying "I want to find my visual language" and having the same problem you talked about. Another comment down here said "I want to develop my art style" is a better way to put it. A style is not something you find and stick to and it's something you grow and create over time through experimentation and it can be subject to change. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to draw in a way you think is cool just as long as you're open to new things too, as you said.

0:48 See now, that's the biggest mistake an artist can make, "finding" an art style is impossible cause, ya can't, but you can develop a style. Borrowing from orher Artists and Drawing the way you like and you prefer, that's how you actually "find an Art Style". That's how i "found" my Style! However, i still like to experiment from time to just for fun But no one should be pressured to "experiment" just cause for the sake of it, Art should be fun, and if you have fun experimenting do it, if you have fun drawing just one certain way, go ahead. (Obviously you should still make an effort to improve, but ya know what i mean, don't LITERALLY draw just one way!) I personally do a bit of both, doing other styles MY way! and I'd recommend every artist to do that!
@vurtiny3 күн бұрын
That's fair enough! I agree that pressuring yourself does put you in a much worse position if you want to learn art^^ experimentation and stylization should come from one's own curiosity!

What if there is wayyy too many artstyles style that grab your attention but do not mix well together? Or if there is an artstyle that you like alot more than the one you are pursuing? Lets say for example, anime and lineartless art? You like the lineartless art but it does not mix well with anime so you have to give it up because how else are going to make the animation you always wanted to make? Not saying you dont like the anime artstyle just saying you prefer the lineartless art slightly more than the generic japanese artstyle
@Fatih_M1773 күн бұрын
@@anapple6912 Lineless anime art? That actually kinda sounds dope! I'd actually like to see how that may look! (Heck i might even just google it!) Yeah but anyways, usually in those situations, we take some creative liberties, like slightly changing up the designs of characters just to fit more, or making minor adjustments to the shape. That's how you truly mix styles!

Rather than art styles, i heavily believe in finding your niche and intereststo practice or explore from instead of focusing too much on being exclusive or different. btw your speedpaint footage is quite hard to watch because of the sped up zooms and rotations. i recommend slowing down or cutting out the zooms and making only certain parts sped up so it doesn't cause issues for people with photosensitivity. there's a lot of pressure to stick to an art style and have a unique one on social media, but in creative industries, its the complete oposite. you are expected to adapt and to adjust your art to fit the style of each project you work on. your portfolio should showcase the styles of work that companies may already work in. imo, every artist should stop worrying about style. keep making art, but at the same time think about what projects you want to work on and the themes as well. for me, i adjust my art to fit the tone and feel of each project. that way i can still experiment but at the same time have projects where i have constraints that my art would fit to. also 9 times out of 10, its not the style that an artist should be working on, but fundementals. stylisation comes last in the process of learning to draw. getting stuck in the "it's just my style" leads to stagnation. this is not directed at anyone by the way, but it is just something i have seen being said a lot by beginner and intermediate artists.
