When they switch bodies, each character will be in the others respective timeline, and so will their phones and the dates on their phones. For example; if you were to wake up in someone else's body living in 2016, their phone wouldn't show the date in the time YOU were living in.

you could also argue that this is one of the most intense forms of love since two people loving each other so deeply that they emulate each other has been explored in things like the twin flames concept. in this, it’s not necessarily you love the idea of living the your partner’s life or being in their position, but the love you feel is so intense that every aspect of the latter is incorporated in your own life since you’re so greatly intertwined with them. meaning your connection with them is so great that you fall for everything that has to do with them, you seek out the same lifestyle that they have unconsciously and practically become the same because of that love. in mitsuha’s case, initially it appears she is infatuated with the city lifestyle of taki’s, and it’s apparent that she’s enjoying the experience because she desires elements of taki’s life but not him. the more the cycle progresses, though, it’s shown that she starts to fixate on taki’s affairs and things pertaining directly to him like his interests. living in his shoes, she’s exposed to the very things that make taki who he is, and in turn, her experience with these things makes her more drawn to the person’s life she’s living. in their own ways, i think they both come to love each other based on the information they pick up on one other during the cycle. even sharing the same experience individual to them of the cycle in itself is something that binds them together. the mutual understanding that only they have is the basis of the bond that grows between them. summed up, i think the love that stems from being in another’s perspective is due to the fact that you come to admire the position you find yourself in, not because you enjoy their environmental factors or you love yourself, but because you truly understand the other person and would further implement the qualities in their life in yours out of love for that person

Yea, you don’t really see their chemistry and their dynamic but I think it’s doesn’t really need that. As much as I love Makoto Shinkai and his movies (especially Kimi no na wa) the fact that Taki has almost no personality is never brought up and I'm glad someone finally brought it up cause it's so true. Taki is just there, his only importance is that he switches bodies with Mitsuha. He is *as stated* "an observer"
@VincentX709

it's a positioning on "disconnection" the underlying themes suggest interconnection to be a primary theme. One character is extremely disconnected the other is the opposite, but both characters have connection & disconnection along their ways as well. Very simple truthfully.
@liam2988
@liam2988 3 жыл бұрын
@@VincentX709 I'll give you that. I obviously did not think about that, but honestly, I feel there should still be some reason for me to like or really care about Taki. I'm not trying to come off as rude or cynical about it, but if I'm speaking honestly, I just feel as if his character wasn't fleshed out enough. I get the whole idea around connection and disconnection. It makes perfect sense, especially within the plot's narrative, but in my opinion, I just don't think Taki got enough depth for his character that he deserved.

I think if Your Name was a series we could’ve learned more about the characters and how they interact with their environment and how living someone else’s life has affected theirs. Like show how Mitsuha living Taki’s rash nature made her not second guess herself or how Taki picked up drawing and Architecture because Mitsuha liked art and buildings and vice versa. It would’ve been WAY cooler seeing the slow burn of them realizing they love and care for each other that they end up changing parts of themselves for the other person

As much as I like the film, you brought up solid points on its flaws and why it fails to be the monolith people pretend it is. I honestly believe A Silent Voice deserved far more acclaim than Your Name, because that was a film that committed to its themes and did so by utilising the medium of film & animation. Sure, it's based on a manga, but the fact that it adapted said source material into a cohesive film that stands well enough on its own is more praise alone than I can give to Your Name's muddled plot, especially toward the end.

I think one little scene/shot that could give Taki 100x more backstory would legitimately just be a shot of Taki's empty apartment, shown after the one time we see his dad and around when he draws in his room. It would establish that his parents are absent while he has to work on his own to make it where he wants to be. We can contrast it with Mitsuha's family where sure her dad is pretty absent from her life, but she has a loving grandmother and close bond with her little sister. Show us more shots of an empty apartment. Give us a living area with nothing but legal paperwork, and let the audience empathize with his issues. Differentiate between Taki and Mitsuha's home lives and explore how that affects their interactions

Same here, my partner and I (both of us are queer trans people, for context) watched it relatively soon after we first started dating because a friend described it as "romantic and good to watch with a partner" and we both found it painfully mediocre. I think the only time I actually felt moved by anything was that one surreal sequence that involved cells dividing and turning into the characters as they grew up. The rest of the time was a lot of cringing at thd lack of thematic follow-through and how many missed opportunities there were to explore both the nuances of the characters effectively living as queer and trans people while swapped (and all the social ostracization and psychological suffering and constantly having to figure out how to pretend to be cis involved in that sort of existence) AND the nuances of how living each other's lives would actually mold each other. At first Your Name seemed like two very individual self exploration stories where the characters cared about each other but were ultimately just exploring themselves individually and seeing what living a different life in a different body would be like (again, another frustratingly unexplored thing) rather than two people falling for each other by truly living each other's lives. Then the romance was added and it felt so forced and dimensionless it made we want to scream, because honestly, the only reason so many people buy this sort of romance is heteronormativity (because people see a boy and a girl they assume things must be going on and that the end result of a boy and a girl having that sort of experience must inevitably be romance..... and they project all sorts of stuff onto the relationship that hypes it up into something it just isn't) and pretty, atmospheric visuals. It seemed like an overly ambitious thing that kept shifting gears and hopping from thematic non-sequitur to thematic non-sequitur without actually saying anything substantial about love other than this very overrused idea of saviorism and the idea that romantic love is always just supposed to magically arise from close contact and intimacy between boys and girls. It felt so alienating and uninspiring to me as both a queer person and as someone who was actively falling in love with someone for the first time through casual coexistence and quiet, slowly-building intimacy. The fact that it dethroned Spirited Away in various lists and ranking measurements makes me want to cry, because even Chihiro and Haku who aren't even explicitly romantic ahd probably aren't into each other that way have more interesting and believable chemistry than the Your Name duo. The concept had something going for it, though, so I'll give it that.

I know this is a really old video, but I've been looking for some reason why I enjoyed this film so much and why it seriously changed my life and made me rethink the way I want to live. Why did this happen and looking at the film analytically, it doesn't seem all too amazing. I totally agree with you on that. But I think there's an important distinction to be made when analyzing movies like these. Cultural impacts if you will, which I personally believe this is. I think this movie isn't meant to say something unique or profound. It's not meant to teach the audience anything. Nor is it meant to change your mind about something or think about anything in a new/unique way. It's not mean to have great interesting characters, or have interesting relationships at all. I think, even if this wasn't Shinkai's desire, the reason why this film is so good, is that it has a believable depiction of a hopeful reality. Life is suffering, it's hard, people work hard to fail most of the time, just for a chance of success. Most people probably don't really know for sure what they're working so hard for. Call it escapism if you will, but this movie mirrors the life of the audience (Japanese people keep in mind, so a lot of the culture will probably be lost to the international audience. Although if numbers are anything to go by, this isn't true) in a unrealistic hopeful way that makes you want to hope and believe that your efforts aren't in vain and you might still be able to have what you're reaching for, even if you don't really know what that is yet. Shinkai doesn't write with rationality, primarily because we as people aren't rational. We're emotional, and that's what I believe Shinkai captures so well. Our emotional ourbreaks, our awkwardness, our wonder and surprise at the stars and models put in front of us, our averageness. That brings me to the characters. You mentioned that they could be caricatures (Taki at least) that we project ourselves onto, and while I believe that is true, I think it goes a bit more than that. Taki is fundamentally different than almost everyone in the audience, but we can still empathize with him so well because he suffers and wants like the rest of us do. Often times in movies like Eternal Sunshine, the character's actions and desires are rational and relate-able, but they're so far from emotionally relate able and they don't force empathy out of you like Shinkai's characters do. I personally chose to pursue life more quietly due to this film. The desires I have and the work I want to put into them burned much brighter than before the film and I felt inspired to keep wanting the things I wanted. I understand you didn't like the film and I fully respect your opinion. I agree with most of the points you had as well! It was an extremely well put together argument. But throwing things out like "people overhype stuff all the time" isn't a good explanation of why movies succeed. The primary audience of this film probably is at least in high school if not older, and there are touching things about this film. At the very least, it changed my life and years later I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for hearing me out, if anyone does.

I love this comment. I had a similar experience where this film affected me very deeply. Interestingly the first three times I saw it I thought it was an ok film. In all honestly I didn't understand why it was getting so much praise. To keep it short I thought I had missed something. So I tried watching it again and at the end of the film I kind of felt empty but not emotional at all. The third time I watched it I felt the same emptiness. I thought to myself maybe its just a shallow film. So I went on with my life and forgot about "Your Name". A year or so passed, then one day I went to see the movie "A Silent Voice" In theaters. I thought it was an amazing film. It touched my heart. I went home and carried on with my days listening to the beautiful soundtrack of "A Silent Voice". At this time of my life I was very lonely and confused and I didn't have many interests. I was living the life of "the average Joe" a very robotic life. I was very absent-minded. It was "A Silent Voice" that made me think about anime again. I hadn't watched anime for a long time, but "A Silent Voice" intrigued me so much I couldn't miss it. After that I realized it came out in 2016 in the same year of "Your Name". So I started watching some videos on "Your name" the cute orchestra covers on the streets of Japan and some videos on Makoto Shinkai. I finally decided I'd give it an other shot. At some point in the movie I started to see some things in myself in Taki's and Mitsuha's personalities. I started to feel what they were feeling. During the Katawaredoki scene my eyes teared up. I was filled with warmth and sadness.The next thing knew I was sobbing. I had chills go down and up my spine and felt so many moods and emotions I have never felt before in my life. I felt like the film was comforting me and telling me it was going to be ok. That I have to keep going. It was giving me sense of hope and melancholy at the same time. After the film finished I was crying throughout the whole credits. I then went to bed still sobbing until I fell asleep. "Your Name" to me wasn't a deep, unique, philosophical film It was an empathetic one. I am very grateful for "A Silent Voice" and "Your Name" . That was my experience with this film. They are certainly not cinematic masterpieces but they will always be special to me. There's this analysis I really like its called "Kimi No Na Wa. (Your Name.) Analysis | The Ties That Bind". This video helped me put it into words. I'm not good with words lol Anyways, Thank you for your time.

Kaiju I think it's partially because of the general way that humans function. When someone takes a negative stance towards something you enjoy, the brain automatically goes into a defensive stance because of leftover survival genes 'n' shit. It's normal for humans to defend what they like and attack views that oppose it. I personally find that the tone near the end of the video and the general cutting in clips from... Whoever the hell that was praising it like it was the best thing ever made throughout, saying the humour was original, yadda, yadda. They personally sounded really stupid to me and cutting in examples of him made me feel like I was being insulted for liking something, which you know, it's fine, it happens. Gave me a sort of "If you like this movie, you're mindlessly praising it for things that aren't unique and should feel bad" feeling which I can totally see raising the dislikes. It feels a lot more negative than I personally feel it had to be, which gives me some negative vibes towards the critique in general, it's only human to feel that way. I dunno, maybe that's just the style of this channel? But it's just, in general, a style I don't care for. I don't care much for nitpicks, I find it to be kinda... Unnecessary? Nitpicks are nitpicks. Personally, I didn't enjoy this movie because I found it necessarily deep. As stated, a movie where two people in love travelled back in time to stop the Titanic from sinking is totally a movie I'd go see, so as a critique I guess I can just shrug at it? It's not exactly a dealbreaker. I felt that as stated, the critique being done here is aimed more at people who blindly think it's a masterpiece. I am not one of those people, so, well, it did nothing to convince me of an opposing view, nor did it feel like it really tried. It kinda fell flat for me because I just enjoyed it for what it was on the surface, a body-swapping comedy with a twist that felt, well not original, but at least somewhat interesting. Travelling back in time to stop a tragedy is a decent enough plotline for me to feel somewhat invested and I have no issue with different tones throughout a movie. All in all, this video kinda left me feeling not angry, more disappointed? Like it could've worked a lot better at explaining what they didn't like by removing a lot of the interruptions at 0:37 4:40 8:09 13:33 15:27. Without these parts being included, I can definitely see it being a far better-received video but as it stands, it feels unnecessarily negative towards the people that enjoy it. Wow, this was originally meant to be a very short comment about why people are quick to see something in a negative light and now it turned into this. Well, shit. Have it anyways.

It is very unfinished, but I think to have gone any further than it did would have meant having to go a lot further... as in an entire sequel further, but as part of the same movie, rather than as a sequel. I want to post my opinions before the video and see how well they line up. The time hopping thing was creative but a little dumb (not the core concept but the execution), the plot was pretty logical yet complicated (a good thing imo) with the in universe rules, yet the power of love kept on breaking some of the laws set up. Kinda annoying. That is dwarfed though by my fustrations toward the romance aspect of the movie. I hated it. The characters only flirted with each other through time, they met during that twighlight scene but they don't even fucking remeber it afterwards so what is the point. Yeah sure while they might be twirling around their stupid strings of faith, I'm left feeling nothing. I cannot empathize with a relationship that consists of a few words, none of which are even remembered. I want witty dialouge, funny scenes, and heart felt conversations. Not this fate bullshit. I can't feel anything about it if the movie just keeps on waving this "ooooo destiinnnyyy ooooo" in my face. While the concept of feeling empty all the time is a feeling I'm rather aquainted with*, that dosen't make we wish these characters got together. Love should be an attraction towards because of a personality, not an escape from a supernatural depression. *like seriously give me my inter dimensional ring or my superpowers or my ability to see dead people already. Make my life an esekai already. I'm so fucking bored and all my friends are now hundreds of miles away and im surrounded by morons, fucking everyone around me (literally everyone, I doubt there is a single person in my school who even knows this movie, which in a school of 3000 is baffling)! And you may be thinking that "what are the chances there's not a single sane individual around me", which makes me even more terrified because that means I'm the insane one! I just want to a part of something intresting and worthwhile, and I sure as hell am never going to on my own ability so send me off to hogwarts already fuuuuuccckkkk.

Some good points you raised there. Especially regarding the gender roles -- those scenes were kinda embarressing. One of my biggest issues with this movie is the whole meteor strike. It's treated as something that just happened once like it's nothing. You'd think a metreor strike that killed 500 people and whiped a town from the face of the Earth would be one for the history books, seeing as I can't think of any such event ever being recorded in human history. In Your Name this is shelved as just another disaster, like it's an earthquake. I'm sorry, but it doesn't work that way. Certainly not only after 5 years have passed. This is an occurance that would've had the entire world shocked for the next decade, and placed that town among the likes of Pompeii. But our male protagonist actually needs to be reminded that this happened no more than 5 years ago?

Not only that, but for such a comet small like that strikes the town in the film is pretty damn small. The last time we had a falling comet hit the earth, which was the Russian Comet in 2013, did not cause such an awful dramatic explosion compared to the exaggerated version like the one in the film. That and how the hell did space organizations look closely at such a comet coming nearby not notice an oddity of the comet maybe splitting? Considering modern day technology to look closely at space rocks and whatnot.

CasualShinji I think to be fair he was just a little kid when it happened and given that yes it's significant but not close enough to impact his personal life it's at least believable that he would forget or even if every year there is some kind of Remembrance Day for it there are so many rando villages in the outskirts that his personal bias of not wanting her to be dead may of made him filter out that possibility

Dynamitrix 100 yeah sure but i don’t think his specific age really matters that much. Just the fact that minors are usually more self absorbed not to hold onto info about things that happened to randos in the middle of nowhere. People are vastly underestimating our ability to not remember tragedies. Take California right now, the wild fires have killed I believe 74 people and 1000 people unaccounted for and over 8000 structures destroyed. Big problem? Yes. Will people remember in 3 months? Nope, unless you were personally affected. In the gulf coast they have what are called 500 year flood plains. Basically there are areas that have a huge ass flood that is likely to kill a bunch of people most likely to occurs once every 500 years. But people still live there and people still die and every time it happens we who don’t live there say oh the horror and then forget until it happens again. My point being that besides the novelty of it being a comet. The death toll and the inoperable status of the town aren’t that big of an influence to stick in people’s minds or make it into mainstream education beyond being a fun fact mentioned in astronomy class that one time in 10th grade because the teacher was trying to make science cool by mentioning something you might remember hearing in the news. What matters most is location. If a major city was hit then it doesn’t matter how small the death toll is. There would be a fucking remembrance day and everything but rando village out in the boonies gets a nice aside comment every time a comet comes close. People mention it would be on the level of recognition of Pompeii but that was a major trade city not a rando village near a volcano. Which I will now mention a village called San Miguel Los Lotes which was destroyed 5 months ago this year by a volcano with 300 people still missing or dead and nobody really cares (so no not a thing the whole world would call notice too). A year after 9/11 people personally harmed by it struggle to receive aid because its no longer the trending tragedy. Humans are pretty shitty at showing empathy when we don’t have too. So is it believable that the government just relocated everyone and called it a day without putting it in the texts books? Yup. Is it believable that he didn’t remember a tragedy 5 yrs ago? Well given that we can’t be bothered to remember tragedies from a year ago I think that would be fair portrayal. I appreciate the optimism in believing we would care or at least bother to jot it down into many more texts books but even if that was the case what would that effectively change about the people in the movie? He would still need a village survivor to recognize his sketches for the movie to have a creditable connection for why he thought the two towns were the same one

My main issue with this film is with the plotting. When comparing this movie to that of "A Silent Voice" we see the exposition in the first 20 minutes. The viewer gets to see how Ishida and his friends treat Shouko and get a foundation of what the film is about, how each character operates, etc. From there we see the inciting incident where Ishida becomes isolated from his friends, is put into a similar perspective to that of Shouko, and eventually tries to kill himself. The story continues into the rising action as Ishida slowly regains friends and attempts to make up for his past mistakes. This is all halted in the climax, where he pushes his friends away and Shouko attempts suicide. A Silent Voice follows the basic principles of story telling, whereas Kimi no Na wa throws these concepts out the window. The movie starts with an exposition where it does similar things to that of A Silent Voice, (establishing setting, characters, etc.) and then continues to the inciting incident which was intended to be the mysterious switching of Taki and Mitsuha's bodies. This inciting incident falls rather short however, as the ensuing rising actions feels more like an exposition rather than the building of tension. In the first hour of the film, there is no building of tension, or real development to the story. It seems the writer intended on showing the dysfunctional way the teens were living out each other's lives and making that the rising action, however, this viewing experience is rather bland as the characters (specifically Taki) don't really evolve or showcases their passions, dreams, and life to the viewer (which you pointed out in your video). You point out that the date between Taki and Miki was rather pointless (which I very much so agree with) and the characters don't have deep interactions with the characters around them when they switch lives; leaving no room for the viewer to latch on to their love for each other. Overall the entire first hour of the film intended on being the rising action didn't achieve the goal of furthering the story or developing the characters, and the rising actions was more or less two teenagers living out their lives dysfunctionally and grabbing each others titts and dick. An hour into the film Taki comes to the realization that Mitsuha is dead, with the only thing left of her being the faint memories he has of her and her family. This realization feels more like the inciting incident, but at this point we are already an hour into the film. The rest of the movie where Taki and Mitusha go on to save the town from the meteor more or less follows the premise of rising action, climax, and falling action (however time traveling felt very confusing and just a random aspect of the movie that was thrown in to continue the story) ; however, because the first hour of the film is wasted not developing the story, the meteor being the main conflict feels rather cramped in and doesn't really connect with the themes and symbolism of the movie. The falling action at the end of the film, where Mitsuha and Taki are attempting to reconnect with one another but can't seem to find each other is supposed to be the nice bow at the end of the movie, where the two lovers finally meet again. However, because the first hour of the film didn't really develop the characters or give a reason for the viewer to feel a deeper connection to the characters and their relationship, I found myself not really caring that they ended up with one another or their love for one another in general. The film is by no means bad, and is one of the most visually stunning animes I've ever seen, however, in comparison to a film like A Silent Voice (which Your Name greatly overshadowed) I can't help but think this film was outdone by that of A Silent Voice and had the potential to do much better.

Honestly agree with you. They spend more time taking us out of the story to show us a music video with a standard anime op than actually developing the story yeah the stuff they showed us was funny and nice to watch but the flip from the girl getting the gut a date and suddenly realising she liked him and he her was really sudden. I still liked the ending though but it felt like they were more just good friends for 90% of the film. And I don't like 5 centimeters per second. That ish annoyed me to no end.

I have said time and time again, makoto shinkai films are popular for their amazing visuals and music, which carry the weight of the lackluster story. This leads to people saying "I liked the visuals and music so I like the film". The visuals and music are a parade of Ferraris, the story is the dirt road they drive on, it only serves to get them from Point A to Point B. If the spectacle is good, you don't care what they're driving on.

I wholeheartedly agree that the animation and soundtrack is wonderful, and the former is definitely Shinkai's forte. But I do want to defend GoatJesus a little bit and maybe provide a bit more discussion. 1) For the story aspect, I'm assuming you mean the themes and events that occur in the film right? Because he certainly did focus on other aspects, such as the characters, and imo characters =/= story. Characters add flavour to the story; the ways in which they are characterised to react to certain events are what humanises them and helps engage the audience. I hate to appear as some "raving, hateful Ghibli fan", but Miyazaki has created some great films with stories that are less dramatic than Your Name, and yet have people rewatching them over and over largely due to great characterizations. So all in all, he didn't "only focus on the story aspect". 2)As for why he didn't talk too much if at all about the great art and soundtrack, I might offer my perspective on this. Your Name is so overhyped to the point that pretty much every anime reviewer has praised it in their videos, and hell, Your Name's own music video is so popular that I think that pretty much everyone who has heard of this movie knows for its beautiful art. Perhaps it just doesn't need to be said, as at this point, praising Shinkai's art for being fantastic is like praising the coolness of a cold drink in summer. Maybe thats why he just included a clip or two. But I think that even more importantly, there may be a shared opinion that good art and good soundtrack does not equal to a good film ( I do want to emphasise "opinion" though, as I do respect your love for this film). I think that, even above a great story, great characters are needed for a film to be emotionally enagaging, and to me, Shinkai did not deliver that, and no amount of detailed backgrounds, detailed lighting and albeit great colours can make me rewatch something I can't/ don't want to connect to. Maybe he felt the same. The soundtrack is, again, wonderful but I guess it just isn't enough to make some people overlook the other flaws and to find this film "good". Sorry for the essay, but that's just a few points I'd like to share.

And, I do wish we got to explore the lives and personality of their friends. But there were tons of little moments where we learn about Taki. For instance, when he swapped into her body, we already know he has a short temper becuase he had the band aid across his face. Unlike her, he sticks up for himself and thats why people started to like her more. Because she is bolder and more charismatic since Taki feels that confidence in her life and she feels that way in his BECAUSE they WANT to help each other out, NOT becuase they are just simply being themselves. And as for the gendered aspect, I dont really think thats the point. I think they swap bodies in order to live the opposite lives of one another. She wishes to abandon her life as a shrine maiden and pursue a life unweighted by family pressures, and he lives in a bustling city and was needed to show the slower parts of life and town as opposed to his go go attitude. The grandma also serves as a somewhat parental figure for Taki as its clear he doesnt get to learn tradition at home. Finally, I heavily disagree with the disaster aspect. The whole point was that they used Misubi and the themes of the past to change the fate of the town. That was what the ancestors were attempting to secure. I think Mitsuha leaving to pursue her dreams but maybe showing her sister taking on the role of shrine maiden would have been beautiful. Finally, Taki wrote I love you on her hand because he knew they would eventually forget regardless since the gods were altering their memories and the whole sequence became more like a mistful dream. So he wanted to show her in that moment no matter she is loved because writing the name is useless. Overall, while I agree with some points, I think this movie is amazing and its something you watch as a feel good with a touch of romance. Id argue the main point is cultural past figuring out what your purpose is and then the romance. But thats just me. Will forever love this movie.

I adored this movie when I first saw it, but even then, I never thought it was flawless. I could articulate a few problems I had with it, but they seemed really easy to ignore. You've really nailed down what I haven't been bothered to think about because it makes me uncomfortable a movie with flaws such as these. I deeply value your opinion, and I'm glad you aren't one of those people who just tear something down for the sake of it or to detract from other people's enjoyment. I love this film, but it'll never be anywhere near perfect. Great video.

I respect your opinion and can see where you're coming from, but the flaws you mentioned don't hold me back from still liking this film. I think circumstances of Taki and Mitsuha where enough for most people to get emotionally invested. There's a video of Japanese elders watching Your Name and loving it because of they relate on an emotional level with growing apart from someone you love and not confessing to them before they never see them again. Maybe the movie has less to say about stuff, but it leaves enough open for people to relate to certain parts and nailing those things enough for people to love the movie.
@GoatJesus

Mo Senpai you should still like the film. But connecting with the characters =\= connecting with the concept. Elderly people might relate to the concept and not the execution. Then again, I could probably find elderly people to rag on this movie too if I wanted to make it look bad. I don’t really see your point. Popularity has never equaled quality.
@MoSenpai
@MoSenpai 6 жыл бұрын
GoatJesus My point is the same as yours. Popularity does not equal quality, but quality doesn't dictate audience consensus. Can legitimately bad movies have a big fanbase ? Yes, but not all movies with flaws are devoid of merit. People are not hung up on the lack of characterisation, because they're only vehicles for the audience to project themselves on. The people I talked to related to the situations and circumstances and that's what the movie was going for in the first place.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The “romance” was nonexistent for me. Plus the characters were just so flat. And empty, in a way.. plus, the scene near the end where Taki writes “I love you” on Mitsuha’s hand? Everyone raves on about how sad and tragic that moment is, and I just snorted and rolled my eyes. It’s so forced and corny.. 😂 That aside, the animation for all the starry skies and landscapes of grass fields, etc. are really pretty, though.. but that’s legitimately all I liked about it.

13:28 And also Taki, upon being in it for the umpteenth time and probably by that point being someone who should know better or at least have enough goddamn respect for her as a person to NOT do it again, and we also expect him to not do it again because the film has taken on a more dramatic tone... fucking does it again. A barrel of laughs, a pound of fish of laughs; the entire theatre raging into rapturous fits of convulsion. I remember really liking this movie, though also questioning if watching it again wouldn't just make it fall apart, and even then that was absolutely the worst part of it, hands down; all for a cheap shot of laughter, it uses the same punchline and throws away with it a potential to more firmly establish the shift in tone and the character development that Taki should've undergone by now, or at least getting tired of doing that so goddamn often.

ZipMap People aren’t shallow, man. They just appear to be because of such things as cultural zeitgeist and social norms that put them into boxes DESPITE what they have going on outside of that. Now are there people out there with no direction in life? Yes. But they are outliers and typically have a reason for being that way which, in practice, makes Ben just as deep. Dissociation to cope with some form of abuse is one way, being forced to conform to something like a societal standards or a family business at the cost of your personal agency is another, and having no role model due to a broken family would be another. Even shallow characters aren’t shallow in the way that you seem to think. Life and people are more nuanced than that.

I agree with the “We need to see more connection stuff when they are switching”. I too wanted more scenes where they switch and experience each other’s lives. But when you went personal about taki talkin to his dad, i disagreed. You gotta remember they are teens, and if i was mitsuha in Taki’s body, i wouldnt even dare interact too much with the father, so that everything can go normal and smooth without anyone realising the switch. You take it like these characters should already be experienced in the switch, you are forgetting that both of them are shocked by the phenomena and they will always be anxious of their actions, especially towards their parents or relatives. Both of them want the phenomena to stop and continue life without change, but what you suggested was “change”.

I think a lot of the appeal is despite these points.. the characters are seem average and underdeveloped and I think that has resulted in the audience projecting what they feel and what they want to imagine about the characters. Which works for mass appeal.. because the is so little to judge. It then allows you to just focus on the complexity of the spiritual aspect of the movie. And the ending, while emotionally satisfying, ends up being very open ended.
@JohnKayJr
@JohnKayJr 6 жыл бұрын
Otherwise I agree that it's not actually that deep or well developed and Makoto Shinkai was right when he could have done a better job. There didn't seem to be a clear theme, it was just.. a pretty movie, with some feel good stuff in it. But no Amazing lessons, or deep character development. It lets people just fill in the void with whatever they like. Which, I guess led to a lot of people filling it in with everything they like! But the reviewer her was waiting to be filled, and didn't get much.. this movie is actually a thriller mystery movie, pretending to have romance and spirituality and deep emotion.
@JohnKayJr
@JohnKayJr 6 жыл бұрын
The more I think of it. The more it's not a romance in my mind. It has some of the clutches of one near the end, but it doesn't really feel that way most of the movie. Just feels like your average flawed characters, dealing with a bizarre situation. Reminds me more of thrillers like Memento, or Princess Mononoke (which also don't have much character development)

Those who want to say that Your Name was revolutionary I can say it was not the first storyline of body swapping.

I do think that Your Name is a good film, but not a great one. I enjoyed A Silent Voice allot better. It was a good couple of films that I brought within a close few months of their DVD release. I think that Your Name should have been a 12 to 24 episode series as there are things can be delved more deeper in the story. A movie with only 90 minutes can only delve into the main part of the story and only that main story is shown in the film. All other side stories need to be told in a separate OVA series that can give each character a side to their stories that the film does not give it.
