I think it's a point that some of them don't actually embody their sins. These are all people whose lives have been directly and terribly influenced by these sins. Sure, they feel as though they have sinned, and in minor ways the less guilty ones still did, but regardless of how much they themselves do or do not embody their respective sin, that sin was still a large influence on them. Like Haruto. He's probably one of the biggest cases of not embodying the sin himself, but his boss was a lazy, shortcut-taking hack who wanted to play the system rather than create meaningful magazine content. Haruto had a moment of negligence in not seeing the writing on the wall of what his boss would do, and he feels horrible and slothful/sinful for that, as anyone would. But it's his boss that was the truly slothful bastard.

I can, a lot of the frustrations are very much the same frustrations found in PMD, which becomes obvious if you strip away the Pokemon decorations. Same thing with Danganronpa V3's Mystery Dungeon Mode.

Mamoru didn't "team up" with the piece of trash that killed his sister. He was just a dummy who thought he had control over him (partly because his dad's line of "he is working with me even if he likes it or not"). So while it is strange he doesn't factor in the monster under his control would or could break free I can accept it. I'll admit him not showing up again after he is in the main character's mind now is annoying, but I guess that is what sequels are for... The sins making no sense as well and not related to the main characters in truth is fine IMO as well. It is Mamoru who is accusing the others of the sins after all and he is not in the right state of mind (though his sin is actually accurate in this case, he is greed). Really the fact that they have some link to the sins works as well IMO because it is just like Full Metal Alchemist in that way. The sins could be good or bad in that and be used in different ways. I feel they sort of killed Mamoru's dad in self defense as well. He made it seem like he didn't need their keys at 1st but then he locks them in the room with him because they disagreed with him? I will admit I kind of hated how the final boss came to be though. The game really should have had a few different endings like one where you give the keys to Terashima if they so wanted him to be the potential final boss. Because I did feel the fact that even if he is by far a piece of shit (which I felt was forced tbh) he was their best hope of fixing the world at the time. Even though Sachika proves him wrong (I feel she does more than just has babies at the end. she could have fixed the extend machine and the clones flaws like her dad thought she could have). Though I would have liked it if in Mamoru's chapter they had his dad ending on the way he did. If the final boss would have been the original version of Sachika who was like Mamoru blaming them for her original death and being stuck as incomplete clone (because of her brother messing up and not having her full original body or something) and you could get a few endings based off how you handled the fight that would have been better IMO. I do feel some of your other criticisms are nonsense though sorry. Characters interacting with each other and more just living being hidden is just fine IMO. Some skits like the kids in school with Sachika as their teacher or in a nursing home with Sachika as their caregiver were great and I don't mind them being hidden at all. And complaining about survival mechanics in a survival game. Sorry that is just your own preference man.

I just finished playing this game not too long ago and yeah, I do agree with most of your arguments. This game needed more character interactions, more polished mechanics(which wasn't bad in terms of first person dungeon crawlers, but could be better), needed a bit more variety in the dungeon department, and the story could have been better but I was surprised a dungeon crawler had a story to begin with. Other than that, I found the aging machanic kinda funny and it does add a bit more challenge to the dungeon crawling since it changes the characters in each age stage. The characters are nice, I do like the survival aspect since I'm the type who likes to multi-task and build upon things. Oh, and I appreciate that you could gay in this game but that's something that could use more polish itself. Still, it's not something every gaming company is willing to do....looking at you Nintendo.

This game sounds and looks like one of my favorite jrpg dungeon crawlers called Etrian Odyssey. Trust me, that series is for a niche audience like me and has no real plot or characters. It is also known for being extremely difficult and having complex puzzles like Zanki Zero. Even the map designs look the same, but in Etrian Odyssey, you actually have to map the dungeon out yourself.

Gameplay wise, the complexity gave it a refreshing mix between Grimrock, and the Civ series so I'd say it's not the kind of genre for everyone. I like the tank controls, honestly; and, being a fan of Etrian Odyssey which achieved excellence through mathematical design, I quite liked Zanki Zero's style where the characters are constantly aging and you're trying to form a snow fort in the middle of spring when all the snow's melting away. The story is strong in individual arcs but also weak as a unifying plot, sadly enough. Chapter 7 with Mamoru basically confessing on the reason the seven deadly sins were themed felt less like proper story-telling and Mamoru himself spitefully painting the other characters in as negative a light as possible. In retrospect, that might be the very reason _why_ the earlier 6 chapters were structured this way; they weren't necessarily the sinners, but rather those with an environment steeped in said sin. Still, it doesn't fully excuse the opening PV showing them with those captions. Oh, "Editor of Sloth", and "Heiress of Gluttony", "Doctor of Greed", so hype-inducing... only to find that those emotions fell flat with the reveal. I can relate to that disappoint so much, oof.

I can see why people wouldn’t like it bc if it’s overly complicated story and tediousness but despite those things I freakin LOVED this game so much that I just bought it after renting and playing it once I especially love the interesting characters and overall story The story and seeing the characters backstories is what kept me playing days on end till I finally finished it in like a week Plus the dungeons I mostly liked and the music is great If there’s one thing I didn’t like it’s that I hoped they made shortcuts for visiting each floor instead of going all the way back every time

Br4x Th3 Cr4zy G4m3r As long as you’re aware that it is very different from Danganronpa and a that it’s a dungeon crawler you should be fine but if dungeon crawlers aren’t your thing I don’t think you will enjoy Zanki Zero. But if you look for a good first game to get into that gerne I really recommend it because it’s honestly the easiest and beginner friendliest one I’ve played.

I went in blind to this style of gameplay. Hated it at first. But slowly we figured it out, and man am I glad I played this game. The plot was a little bit out there, but overall I really enjoyed it. Probably my biggest gripe is that the dungeons got darker and scarier as the game went on - I'm a coward and set it to easy mode for the last two dungeons because my heart rate was through the roof!

Honestly I like Zanki Zero a lot more then Danganronpa. But I too think that the controls are awkward at first but I got used to them pretty quickly and Kurosuke should have been cut (or at least rewritten) but other then that I absolutely loved the game especially the way that a character being defeated was handled. What I think hindered the game was the fact that it tried to appeal to the Danganronpa-Fandom instead of fans of Grid-based dungeon crawlers. It is a shame as Zanki Zero is actually the easiest one I have played so far and a good starting point for someone who wants to get into that Genre or Fans who what more story and character than a typical Grid-based Dungeon Crawler offers. Never the less I really enjoyed the game but I wouldn’t recommend it to Danganronpa Fans but I would recommend games like: The Letter The Spirit Hunter series Tokyo Dark Black Closet and Your turn to die.

I got this game from my brother who's a fan of Atlus games. I was under the impression that Zanki Zero was a prequel recently added to the "Zanki" series, and I furthermore surmised that this series was known for being openly sadistic in its handling of difficulty (just like Atlus games). Nope. The "Zero" in the title has nothing to do with prequels at all. This game has no difficulty reputation to live up to. It's just a really mean game. ***spoilers*** The title of the game refers to the main character of the in-game minigame "Reckless Skies." His name is Zanki, and like many arcade game player characters, his life counter refers to the number of EXTRA lives he has and does not include his current life, which can be referred to as Zanki #0. There is a major plot point at the end that the Extend Machine's humanity counter functions the same way, so the last human on the planet isn't the last after all.

loved the gameplay and the over the walls story ,characters and mechanics, hated the ending and the twists on the story even the whole "o wait ya tougth we were doing the deadly sins? noo thats boring, and cliche, and overdone....we are using adam and eve themes,eden imagery,rebirth and other possibly religous themes too... arent we original?", that and the sensorship of the work, i could feel that if the game was better handled in many aspects it could have been great, even the story stupid as it was, if it had the balls to keep up with its promises and do not forget themes, characters, actions and consequenses of those (like the rewriting of the chip having somewhat failed), or explored that weird age, relationship, or live stage analogy that the cloning aging could have made tougthfull, zanki to me is missed potential at its finest

I couldn't agree more about every point you made here except you liking all the Extend TV characters (insane scientist included). They even admitted their writing was terrible and as a writer myself, I was cringing too. I also hated the ending. There's no explanation as to where the other human came from, and it's a total downer ending that makes no sense. I'm a game developer with severe writer's block and the only good thing I can say about this game is that it's given me a drive to take all the good aspects of it and make a better game out of them. There's potential here.

Not sure if I was the only person who ran into this issue but on easy in the lust chapter its literally impossible to beat because you need a clihone with a fire element to destroy a barrier but you need to kill certain enemies to get the materials to craft it but enemies dont spawn on easy and if you try to bump the difficulty up to grind enemies you're too underleveled because you dont get exp or good gear on easy seriously fuck this game

Spoilers below. I mostly agree with your points. I also didn't complete the game and watched it on KZbin. I did see the final boss coming from a mile away because of the character animations, I hated the gameplay in general, I missed character interactions and after game's end I strongly feel that conquest videos didn't tie to the main story as well as they should have (which leaves an impression like you spent half the game on some big side quest of little importance). One thing I disagree with is the point about Extend Machine 01. My understanding of it was that is wasn't just an empty reveal that it's Sachika's mother. It was a setup for the later scene where they reunite Sachika as broken X key with her mother, who then decides to save her daughter (so, you know, attempt at emotional moment). Which sure goes against mother's character that was built so far, but maybe it was her attempt at earning redemption or something. I still think it's not great writing, but not as bad as you make it seem. On the other hand (something you didn't mention), I often hate how a lot of "mad scientist" characters are handled in fiction, because in order to be a genius scientist you need to handle logic better than your average person, so the "mad" part should usually come only from a skewed moral compass, not regular "just being crazy". I see they tried to execute this here, but failed in the end. Not being able to see that removing humanity's "bug" by a guy who himself shows symptoms of being a manifestation of this "bug" (murders? check! betrayals? check!) would be a logical contradiction (unless he removed himself too, but no plans on this front apparently) - that's lack of logic that should never make it to the final version of the script.

@GL4D TO B3 HERE dont trust this review for ANUTHING to do with the story. Honestly dont trust this review either. It overly exaggerated the games complexity, both story and game play wise. The dungeon crawling exp. of the game is a popular form of gameplay in japan(mimicking games like etrian oddysy and Mary Skelter. It's a japanese game and the japanese audience is their only focus, worldwide audiences are after thoughts. It's culture creep.) and the story may be complex, but it's not as complex as Zero escape AT ALL. It's multifacested, and that DOESNT bog it down. It's a NICHE game, but not a BAD game, and considering games like zero escape are well acclaimed, if you liked that gane you'll like this one. One example of an incorrect evaluation of the game happens around 10:38. He states that he shouldn't have to go out of his way to learn about characters, when danganronpa did this so much better. Issue there is that this game does it better than DR. FTE in DR are the only thing that flesh out several characters, ESPECIALLY DR 1, the one he seems to use as an example. A lot of characters dont go of the one note path outside of the FTEs at time, and thats always been an issue with DR. Zanki Zero on the other hand, crafts the story around these characters as they develop, the collection of character specific events for dialogue just make sense with the story AND gameplay. THIS IS A DUNGEON CRAWLER AFTER ALL, exploration is encouraged, and they do it through characters, which is the game's strongest point. Honestly having watched most of this review, and having played Zanki Zero all the way through, something I believe even he says he does not do, I can tell you now this review is an unreliable and botched representation of the games strong points.

I agree with you with the sins and the gameplay not being the best (walking around and around and around again in the same eternal place was hell.....) and I also liked the characters (Zen fanclub) but I gotta say I strongly disagree with you in something. Part of your view on this game was based on reviews from other people and high expectations at DR levels so that may have ruined most of the fun from it, if you came knowing 0 about it I think you may have enjoyed it better (or not, but I believe its worth discovering things by yourself). Again this is just my opinion and Im in no way trying to attack you or anything! I really enjoy your videos!

Personally I really liked this game. And I respect your opinion in disliking it. If that were the extent of this video I wouldnt bother commenting but... Did you really come into a dungeon crawling JRPG survival game expecting fucking danganronpa? Everytime you compare the two I lose more brain cells. One game is a survival dungeon crawler, the other a mystery murder visual novel... hm, perhaps they arent similar for a reason? If you dont like the story, fair. I thought it was pretty emotional, and gave each character plenty of time to be fleshed out. Beyond individual characters though, Zanki Zero is a game that focuses on the overaching plot, one about how they got to the island and why. Those mysteries keep me on the edge of my seat and the answers didnt disapppoint. But if it didnt do that for you, I get it. What I dont get is comparing character development to danganronpa, a game where the main characters greatest growth is deciding that the generic concept of "hope" is probably better than the generic concept of "despair" and has a shouting match with a harajuku gal. Where supposedly smart people like Kyoko and Byakuya just go "ehhh tell em Makoto" because yeah thats good writing right? And bare in mind I fucking love danganronpa but... wtf dude? You really think its some holy pedastal to hold over Zanki Zero? I just wanna say this. I hope people who find this video wondering if they'll like Zanki Zero dont come out thinking its some garbage heap of a game. Its a solid 7/10 game even by the harshest critic. This guy just has a danganronpa boner and is sad the devs didnt give him another sequel. Play Zanki Zero if you like Dungeon crawlers, you will probably like it. If you want a danganronpa-like game go play "Your turn to die" instead.

I think the real darkness of this game comes from how sexually unapologetic it is. So much of this game is sexual and involves child exploitation. The problem is it fails to deliver the punch it's supposed to have because it has to maintain some degree of innocence as a piece. If they made it any more overtly sexual, it'd be viewed as CP. If it were any less sexual, it would have no meaning. It's a good example of what happens when you have an entire team like the Danganronpa team involved in a project and know how dark they want it to be, but don't have someone like Kodaka at the helm to reel it all in and guide them in the right direction. Look at World's End Club. It feels like everything that was missing from Zanki Zero is in World's End Club and everything that was missing from World's End Club is in Zanki Zero, with all the empty space being filled in by other stuff.

I'm sick and tired of characters getting modeled after the seven deadly sins. It's so overused. Even if it's implemented well, the "seven deadly sins" character trope takes me straight out of the experience. Can we please stop this trope and be at least a bit more original?

On one hand, trope is overused... But personally, if I wasn't explicitly told that characters represent sins, I wouldn't even think of that. Trope is used really well, and even somewhat subverts itself in the story.

I disagree. I love when characters are based off such things. Tarot cards, deadly sins, zodiacs. It always makes me eager to dive in and find out what makes them those things

@@librathebeautifulwarmonk1283 This was my personal opinion. That's great that you like like it. I myself like some tropes that I'd be willing to bet that many people hate. Like the "Protag turns into an animal and must learn to be a better person to become human again" trope. I might've came off as a bit to aggressive when putting my opinion out there, but oh well. I won't judge you for liking it.

What a crappy review. You’re too blindsided and biased to comparing this to danganronpa and other games similar to that. You got to understand that this game is a unique kind of its own particularly with its age and survival mechanic that amplifies that impact of the plot.
