As for you not wanting to spend the whole game with Phi, dont worry. Yes, some endings emphasize Phi than others, but you won't actually be forced to stick with her the whole game, just for the 1st round and some endings.

999 vs VLR is actually pretty divided. A lot of people think 999's simplicity, art style and ending makes it better, which is valid, but a lot of other people think VLR is better with the longer play time, better puzzles and more character building, which is also valid. I don't know if I like one more than the other at this rate, I love both.

As someone who has finished Virtue's last reward and getting all game overs and all endings, if you felt like you had to force yourself for some of the science and psychological themes of 999, you shouldnt play vlr, bc vlr mainly revolves around other more difficult themes that you ahve to wrap your head around. For example, the prisioner's dilemma, Schrodinger's Cat, morphogwnetic field again, color theory, butterfly effect, etc. And also if you struggled with the puzzles of 999, you are gonna think that the ones in vlr are impossible.

I disagree with the disliking psudo science scenes. They were all so interesting and built up into something awesome and creative. As someone who *100% Completed* both games, I can agree that at first, I REALLY didn't enjoy Virtue's Last Reward. The characters all felt like assholes, Clover had her character butchered in my opinion, and the puzzles were WAY harder. *HOWEVER,* when I finally started down the "Correct Path", the game became a lot more enjoyable. Remember how you needed Safe End for True End? Well imagine that, but 10 X better and more frequent. Different mysteries and character beats will only make sense from another path on the flow chart. Sometimes new paths open up, and old ones change. Once the game REALLY gets going with it's main mechanics, it's really griping and interesting. The music is also a complete *BOP!*

As a huge fan of Zero Escape, AI the Somnium Files and Danganronpa, I get it. 999 and VLR will remain masterpieces to me and I absolutely love them to death but I get that it takes a certain type of person to enjoy these games. You won’t have to stay with Phi for all of VLR btw. After each AB room, the pair and solo and colour assignments switch around and you can go in rooms with different characters. What I would recommend highly is to watch a playthrough of this game from someone who enjoyed it. I’d use Fresh Plays as my example but ShortOneGaming, The Nyancave and many many others are all really big fans of the series and I think watching their experiences might make it clear how someone can enjoy Zero Escape. I’m broke and don’t have a console so KZbin playthroughs are my only outlet and FreshPlays got me hooked on the series when I decided to give their 999 playthrough a go. I’ll admit, I think I would have liked them regardless as I am the kind of person who loves puzzles, solving mysteries and even the weird pseudoscience bits were so out there they kinda were so strange that they shot the moon and went back to being great. Idk man that’s what I suggest

I get you about vlr, I had to force myself through the first few hours thanks to the visuals, the harder puzzles and by just not being as intrigued by the story. Eventually the characters and the mystery grew on me, and I couldn't stop talking my sisters ears off about my theories, the characters and just the questions I had about the game. I finished the game, had to think about it for a few minutes. The ending is just a beautiful combination of plot twists and reveals, some of which I predicted, the majority I was absolutely shocked by. I'm currently watching my sister play the game, and I must say that the foreshadowing they do throughout the game is absolutely phenomenal. I get that the game isn't for everyone, even I looked up answer quite a lot. Sometimes I was really irritated about how the items menu worked, how long the transitions from place to place were, ... But I think it was ultimately worth it to play and see the story that was behind it. (Or you can watch a playthrough, Idk)

No if you didnt like the high sci-fi you wont like any of the other zero escape games, I find them all about equal personally, but each one gets progressively more and more high sci-fi, Zero Time Dilemma at one point brings up the concept of alien's being a cannon part of zero escape, though whether they are or aren't is questionable so though I wish you would continue the zero escape games, you probably shouldnt, though VLR's major twists are REALLY good
@stierspider-man25594 жыл бұрын
999 is a solid game and it works more as a stand-alone IMO since it's heavily disconnected from the Free the Soul storyline. VLR is enjoyable but the sci-fi stuff doesn't work for me because 999's sci-fi elements are more grounded and it works organically with the story. I also hate how there are too many endings for VLR just to throw in deaths and shock value, but it makes the gameplay enjoyable so there's that. ZTD is a wasted potential because the characters could've interacted more if they weren't split into teams, and the sci-fi elements are everywhere to make things more convoluted. The SHIFTing, Transporter, Mind Hacking gets thrown in out of nowhere whereas 999's Morphogenetic shtick has a lot of build-ups before it comes in as an essential plot device. So yeah, it's not that I hate sci-fi, but I hate how it's butchering good storytelling. The gameplay is good though, and that's why I like Zero Escape.

As a Zero Escape fan, I feel like you might not enjoy VLR. I'm actually making a video of VLR (This was WAY before this video came out and after that Epithet Erased video I made I'm kind of scared I'll be seen as ripping you off. I'm just really slow and lazy when it comes to making videos) and while it is better than 999 in SOME aspects, 999 is the better game. What's weird about 999 is that I'm kind of the opposite when it comes to some of your opinions on it. I LOVED the "pseudoscience scenes" you talked about because it made me feel like these characters were real, living people who liked to tell fun little things to their friends, and I thought the puzzles were too EASY. While the models and puzzle difficulty are true in VLR, like Sauce said, you aren't completely tethered to Phi.

So you quit VLR to early lmao. You will get separated from Phi almost inmediatly the second round starts, unless you are playing some routes like K's, Luna's or her own. I hope you keep on it bc VLR is literally the best game I've ever played, it just starts a bit wacky but its plot is fucking masterpiece.

Personally I slightly preferred VLR over 999, but to each their own. I actually started with VLR after giving the 3DS demo a go, then I got a copy of 999 for it. Also bought The Nonary Games on PC when it was released, and of course Zero Tme Dilemma too. I know that the story isn't for everyone, but I really enjoyed the pseudo-science parts. To me, it gave an interesting perspective shift to how we usually view the world and, while not real science, it was certainly inspiring. And ever since I've pretty much fallen in love with everything Uchikoshi has worked on (except maybe Puchline, that one was weird as hell), including the Infinity trilogy which he co-wrote with Nakazawa. You could give Root Double a go, also Nakazawa's work, which is on Steam. Very much a linear story so no worries about picking wrong choices (for the most part), and plenty of good twists.

So, I know I'm late but I recently finished the game and I have to say that for me personally VLR is better that 999. I love both games but VLR's story blew my mind so many times. I mean, yeah, it gets really complicated in the true ending but I think the character broke the science down to the point it's easy to understand. However, if you think the science bores you, you probably wouldn't enjoy it as much... So technically I think you're missing out on the best story I've ever seen BUT it is one that really intrigued me personally and might not be everybody's favorite. And Phi... To be honest I didn't like Phi in the beginning, so I almost always chose not to go with her. The more I learned about her though, the more I liked her and now I consider her best girl along with Luna. Plus, I adore her in Zero Time Dilemma, though I gotta agree, it's way weaker than VLR and 999.
@Heroman30033 жыл бұрын
VLR got a very short end of the stick... It was same writer, but the game itself was developed on shoestring budget, hence the use of cheap models and awful 'CGs' using those same models. The management didn't believe the game was even capable of success at all, even though it did suceed purely because of the writing part. Escape sections are generally mixed bag, but pretty much all of them in all games can be guidewalked through. I really wish VLR was given proper budgeting. Extra fun fact, the reason ZTD ended up using a different artstyle yet again was due to attempt to pander to western audience (as that was pretty much the saving grace of monetary success of both Zero Escape games). Generally, the story is fun, and while Phi is pretty relevant in VLR, you do not have to endure her that long, as you aren't stuck with her for every route and entire game and she does grow more likeable as you go anyway.

Just some guy's thoughts on this: My opinion should be taken pretty lightly, I first played Zero Escape about a month ago. I haven't even tried Zero Time Dillema yet. But I would say finish VLR, or at least try to. I think there's less random psuedo-sciencey bits (maybe? My memories not the best), and it has an amazing twist ending that still messes with my head. Don't want to hang out with Phi? You don't have to! Or at least, not all the time. After the first round, you two go seperate ways, and you can generally choose one of two characters to team up with instead. But if you get stuck halfway through the game and don't want to play anymore, then don't force yourself through it. Take a break or stop playing entirely.
@WolfRider20024 жыл бұрын
Some things that I thought you might find interesting since you played The Nonary Games version of 999. In the original, there was no voice acting. The flow chart actually debuted in Virtue's Last Reward, and wasn't in the original version of 999. The original used both screens of the ds when communicate text. The top screen was mainly used for character dialogue while the bottom screen was used mainly for Junpei's inner thoughts and observations about the room or the current situation. I think this was replaced with adventure mode and novel mode. The last puzzle was completely different in the original version. In the original you had to play a game of sudoku and you had to turn the ds upside down
@wedasantika60792 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The DS version Junpei's vision at top screen and Akane's vision at bottom screen Also some of Junpei's monologue was originally novel's narrative.

As a massive fan of the series: No, don't continue please. Your conclusion that 999 > VLR > ZTD is flawed but is precisely why you should not continue. People that make the aforementioned arguement are people that value what you value in visual novels more than what people who enjoy the entire series do. If you struggled with the speculative science in 999 and the intimate character moments felt barely enough to justify the struggle, then the rest of the series would not be for you. The next two games double down at the grand conspiracy and the individual characters feel less and less important. I myself would say that VLR > ZTD > 999 and there are a lot of people like me. However, we are less vocal than the crowd that is unhappy with where the series went with games 2 and especially 3. Only normal, when you are happy, you don't make fuss about it. The notion that ZTD failed to tie important plot lines is mostly brought by people who are interested in "What happens with that charcter?" or "How this relationship continues?" and this is simply something that the series get progressively less interested the further it goes. Important for one is not important for the other. To conclude my thoughts, I feel the series will go on and progressively become less enjoyable for you. If you felt the 999 puzzles are hard, you will fall flat on your face in VLR. If you thought the speculative science is too much and uninteresting, you will have to skip hours of content in the next two games. The series is simply not for you. Not sure who suggested it as a similar one to Danganronpa but they should have been publicly whipped.

Well, if you struggle to beat the puzzles and understand the story of 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors. I'd say that Virtues last reward is not for you. Even though I feel like both games do a pretty good job of explainning and dumbing down the info so it's understandable. The pseudoscience and stuff is more complex in the latter I feel. Also the puzzles don't hold your hand in the second game as much as it does in the first one. In the first game, they give you so many hints it's hard to miss the answer. In the latter there are still things you need to figure out on your own. So all in all, if you didn't really like 999. I don't see any reason to finish Virtues last reward. Although, the first games starts with great suspense and keeps it going I feel. The latter game only become more interesting as the game progresses. I was pretty hooked after hearing about the lion that eats the sun though. As I didn't know what the f it meant and got super curious. I played them all on their original platforms though and they just don't look as good in the remaster/re-release... For one Santas one eye looks like he's drunk all the time in the remaster.

It's certainly a problem when you cannot enjoy the key components of a game. But honestly, it's fine and there's no need to force yourself to play anything just because people tell you that it's cool. I tried playing Mass Effect, because my friend loved it and told me I would definitely enjoy the story. So, I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, I absolutely suck at shooting in video games. Like, I'm abysmal. Thus I didn't enjoy the majority of the gameplay. I stopped playing after a while as it kept making me feel agitated and like I'm incapable. If you find the puzzle solving games in zero escape daunting, the trilogy is just not a good choice for you. I enjoyed almost every puzzle room and while I sometimes needed a bit of help during VLR, most of the puzzles I figured out by myself - or by simple deduction. Sometimes you only have that much to work with and trial and error will eventually make you progress. I enjoy this concept. Thus I wholeheartedly enjoy the zero escape games. There's nothing wrong with finding that it's not a good choice for you, though. I admit that I find it a bit weird that among the cast Phi is identified as the most problematic character. To me she's the coolest of them. The ones who ground my gears the most were Dio and Clover. The guy who antagonizes absolutely everyone at every chance he gets and the mentally super unstable "spy" girl, who cannot get anything done without her aunty Alice. 😒 But character likes and dislikes are pretty subjective. Anyway, to sum it up, I think it's totally valid to decide to leave something that doesn't feel like it's actually fun to play.

(don't take me wrong, some of the 999 characters are very great. I think the cast for this game is way more enjoyable) it's a free browser game, so you don't have to worry about spending money. it's not complete either, but super close to though. Well, a rather dated video, but I still wanted to mention a few points of my own. About the weird dialogue and random science - to be fair, it's MAINLY coming from Akane, and for the rest of them, as you mentioned, it fits. So Akane is just acting like this nerdy goofball, so in a way, it fits her, too. I personally find it kind of charming, even if a little odd. About the music - no way you didn't find it memorable? Morphogenetic sorrow of all things? I understand the style might be not yours, it is very industrial, after all, but it just fits so well and builds the atmosphere extremely nicely. Some of the tracks I listen to every now and then just because I like them. But, I suppose personal preference. As for VLR... Phi is a bit of a bitch, I admit, but she's a really good character. Otherwise I do want to say that VLR might be more overwhelming and everything, but it's also a very interesting and unique game. Also for the 3D models - I believe they actually made them due to some technical limitations, as they were making the game for Nintendo 3DS, but I believe it wasn't released yet? And they had a lot of issues since the studio was very inexperienced with those at the time. As for ZTD... While it is a good game, as you've said it, arguably the worst. Nonetheless, it's less of a serious contender and more of a love letter to the community. It still came out pretty good story-wise, despite its flaws.

TBH... No Straight Roads's biggest problem, from what I've seen, is that it lacks polish.

@Dafawflizer, I say finishing the series is a good idea &, from a dialogue perspective you might not personally "LOVE" it, but from a story perspective & puzzle perspective, it is SO worth it. Trust me, ya won't regret it... mostly, it's still pretty flawed, but just listen to the whistle through the whirlwind with it & it is fantastic, I promise UwU

This makes me think of when I got Dark Souls 2 I really enjoyed the rest of the series but 2 was not good at all seriously it’s the worst out of the 6 why would I punish myself further by playing an inferior game when there are already better options.

Your probably not going to like virtues last reward if continue with it given everything you said. Ai sounds interesting. Maybe I should check it out.

AI is really solid, a bit slow at times but overall it's extremely entertaining.

Dafawfulizer really? I think that will be my next visual novel. Sorry you couldn’t get into zero escape. I understand some games aren’t for everyone but on the bright side you made Ai sound interesting. I will let you know what I think of it.
