I have a sign name, I am not deaf, but I had a good friend in college who was. He would pass by my work everyday and started teaching me sign language in little bursts whenever I would see him. One day he asked how I would sign my name. I didn't understand then at all, and just spelled it out. He laughed and then he showed me his and then gave me my sign name. I was so excited. I've used it ever since, whenever I try to sign (I'm not too good at it). Now I understand that he was checking if anyone had already given me one, and now it feels like a little gift from him. Thank you.

Native/spirit names are very similar in my community! (A native from Six Nations.) When you are just born, you are given a name (typically) from something your mother notices about you at a young age. As you grow, it changes to show your growth as a person. Very cool to see this is not the only instances of such symbolic names!

What tribes use this system of naming? It sounds interesting.
@elonmusk921
@elonmusk921 Жыл бұрын
What tribe is this??? I only know the naming conventions of one tribe, and they’re nothing like this. I’m assuming someone told you this, so just know that that may be true for one or a few tribes, but “native” refers to a very wide range of cultures that differ significantly. It’s kind of like saying “African names”, even though Africa is huge and has many countries with their own unique cultures.

When my 3rd son was born VERY prematurely (at 24 weeks), he unfortunately had a massive stroke. It was in the speech center of his brain so the neonatologist told us to start learning sign language which we did. It turned out that although several disabilities made themselves known in our Sam, being deaf was not one of them. We kept learning how to sign anyway because why not? It just means we can communicate with more people plus it is an exquisite language.

I was gifted my sign name at a Sign Language camp years ago. I hold it close to my heart to this day. It has to do with the sign for "attitude" because that was a very difficult week for all of us since it was the first attempt at bringing the language to the area. The deaf boy who chose it for me explained that they felt I had good attitude throughout everything. I was honored. Whenever I introduce myself in sign, I include it. I was also told that it's possible to have more than one (similar to nicknames) given different situations and friend groups because it's based on how you are seen as a person in that context (with different people).

As identical twins our spoken names both start with the letter K and have only a one letter difference between them. So of course grandpa gave us VERY similar sign names with the letter K. Which was basically someone or a group who took you to your first raves, and was more experienced in the rave culture. They basically showed you basic rave etiquette, and would often name you at your first rave. They would give you your name based on your personality or likes. It was so sweet to see how you were viewed through someone else’s eyes, and it was fun to hear the stories behind others rave names. It felt special and meaningful to get your name 😊

This name was given to me by my wife at the time, who worked in deafness her entire career. She was one of the five original regional case managers for the newly-formed Massachusetts Commission for deaf and hard of hearing. She was highly qualified and certified to manage cases and advocate for deaf/hoh, as well as interpreting on the side. She also designed the entire sign language courses for the local community college. Many deaf people over the years told me she was the best signer they had ever known. I have always been proud of the work and advocacy she did in her field and I’m proud to have a sign name.

i was given a sign name despite being hearing. i took asl for two semesters in college (about a year and a half) and we often had to go to local deaf meet ups for a grade. i really enjoyed going but im incredibly shy and at the time i wasn't very confident in my signing. so i went to one with two other classmates and the guy who set up the meets was going around getting to know everyone. when he stopped at us, i was SO nervous but SO happy to practice. i was smiling the whole entire time and my face was bright red bc i was so embarrassed of my skill level but i was trying so hard. he was very patient with me and very kind and by the end of our conversation, he gave me my sign name. its a mix between smile and s (my name is shayla) so its the handshape for s and the sign for smile. i was so floored and when he gave it to me i almost cried haha. that was several years ago and i am still so honored that i was given it despite only just learning the language and being so new to involve myself in my local deaf community. it really is a special thing to recieve.

My uncle gave me a sign name, while he was showing me how to communicate with my cousin who had autism. I will never forget it because once I introduced my self in sign language my cousin smiled and seemed really happy.

I have a sign name too! I take LSM lessons on internet (it's the sign language from Mexico) but the deaf person that give me my sign name knows ASL too, so my sign name is with my first letters dancing like the dance sign in ASL xD Next year, that person will be my LSM advance teacher so I am so happy for that P. D. My English is not that good so I know I have mistakes in this text but it's good enough for communicate the point ✨ thanks for read. Have a good day 🤟

I went too a Deaf event to learn ASL, and got a sign name there. I fingerspelled my name, and then they asked what my sign name was. I said I didn’t have one. By the end of the event, one of the people I was talking too was like “well your hair is blue, and your favorite thing and place is the ocean” so now my name sign is the sign for ocean with the waves, but on my head! I thought it was super cool and I’m TOTALLY gonna go meet up with them again, it’s really nice not getting overstimulated by too much sound when you’re chatting with people haha!

I got married this summer, and one of my new brothers in law is both deaf and developmentally disabled. I have been working really hard on learning ASL, so I can help make him more comfortable in situations where not many people can sign. We had a really small wedding, only like 25 people, and he asked to stand up and say something. He said that he loves his brother, and he loves me, and he was really happy about this party, with our friends and family. I was honestly tearing up, and I signed to him - thank you, I love you, (sign name). His mom then signed to him, hey, you still need to give (me) a sign name. He thought for a second, then signed the letter L for the first letter of my name + the sign for long hair, and then added, because I have very pretty long hair. I will cherish that memory for the rest of my life, and I'm so grateful for my new (deaf) brother, and for the way he sees the world ❤️

Not me binge watching your shorts😅 I remember in my asl 101-102 class my teacher wanted to give everyone a sign name. That was quite the goal. I was so sad that I didn’t get one lol BUT hopefully I can start learning again and get back connected with the deaf community. I honestly LOVED learning about deaf culture and tbh, the first form of communication between me and my 3 babes (ages 4,3,1) has always been ASL. I always teach them simple things I know they might need like milk or food, and then I teach them thank you, please, all done, more, and help. I love that I’m able to communicate with them before their verbal expressive language is developed. Mama here on hubby’s account lol
