I've never been a fan of either Windows or Linux, for me, they're just tools. I have both installed on my computer. Now my main operating system is Arch Linux (before that I had Fedora). Even before that, my main operating system was Windows (from XP to 11). And I've never seen built-in ads in them. Except maybe the icons of "pre-installed" games/apps from the store, on a freshly installed Windows 11. They were installed ONLY if you clicked on them, that is, to remove them you just need to unpin them via the context menu, since they are just shortcuts. So it's one of three things: the laptop manufacturer pre-installed Adware; the guy himself installed something from an untrusted source, and picked up Adware; the guy is lying for some unknown reason. The browser I always used (Chrome) never reset to IE/Edge. I've never encountered a computer rebooting with programs running. Although I have left my browser/office suite/Visual Studio running for weeks countless times. Since I very rarely turn off my computer, I usually put my computer to sleep. I have no idea why our Windows experiences are so different...
@pip55285 ай бұрын
I've never had a browser reset either but I also haven't tried to uninstall Edge. I also don't see ads pop up in Windows 11. Sure, you can pull up that tab with news articles and such but Windows doesn't just randomly feed you ads out of nowhere. I also don't get forced reboots while actually using my computer. You can tell Windows to only reboot and install during certain times of inactivity but I'm not sure if Matt knew about that when he talked about inhibitors. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Linux in a lot of ways but my personal Windows 11 experience over the past couple years has been pretty okay. I don't like some of the layouts or occasional bugs that I've never had on 10 but the overall experience isn't as bad as some people claim, at least on OEM hardware that was clearly optimized for Windows 11. My 2021 Acer Nitro 5 laptop still runs smoothly 2 years after buying it so maybe bloat is less of a factor than it used to be or that could be because I'm on an nvme drive. That laptop runs Windows and Linux equally well but Linux causes static and hard shutdowns so I had to stop using it on there and mainly use it on my old HP 8200 Elite SFF from 2011.

I have to admit something too, I've had to get a Windows laptop. Hey man, I really hope Linux improves and we could do everything there because Microsoft is not putting the user first in a lot of ways. Here are some tips on how I make windows pretty great to use day to day for my usecases: - I haven't had windows 11 force an update reboot on me once in years.. Make sure you didn't click schedule when prompted, and check the scheduling settings in windows update settings. - There's also a setting to resume all of the programs that you had open when pc starts which is great. - Yes the ads suck but at least you can disable each and every one of them pretty easily.. - The idle ram usage is working as intended as it loads programs that it thinks you will launch into ram so they open quicker. This is a good use of unused RAM imo. - Start11 fixes all of the issues with the start menu and task bar for me. Void tools everything is amazing for search. Power toys has some great utilities. Windhawk too. I'm pretty happy with my windows install after I set it up right and the compatibility with every program under the sun is a great benefit.

There is an inhibitor on Windows of sorts. You can select inactive hours for the system to reboot and apply updates. It is interesting that Matt has had issues with monitors not going to sleep on Linux for a long time because occasionally I have that issue on Windows despite having it set to go to sleep on the lock screen. Sometimes it goes to sleep on the fully open desktop and sometimes it's awake all night on the lock screen and it glares at me when I come out in the early morning. Got PC on the left screen and Mac in front of me. Just bought a Mac, built the PC in 2014, and upgraded it a few times. now I need the Mac for my music and using the pc for a music server etc. Thing is, we need both in this world, either linux or Mac or windows or all of them. I use to hope to only use linux in place of a windows machine but the usage of certain software ties one to their computer of choice.

Matt, you have my sympathies. Most people after they switch become used to the better usability of Linux and never go back and thus never have to experience the pain that Windows really is. They get used to Windows after years of it being the only choice and they don't realize how crap it is because they're the boiling frog. Windows has gotten so bad that now it's more difficult to hide it if you swap back and forth. I say this as a 25+ year user of Linux who has always found it to be the better system. Though, I've been a KDE user that whole time, so I have a different perspective. This is also why 6gb of RAM at idle doesn't bug me because if I leave myself logged in for long enough I eventually get to that amount of usage. I'm sitting at 6gb right now with 1.5 in swap, and I've been logged in for a whole month.

I study CS at at times it's very frustrating to see the amount of Windows-exclusive software we require for some courses. I can dual boot in separate drives in my laptop so it's not really a problem, and eventually using Windows just kinda works, but there really is nothing like fully customizing a system to your liking. Idk, if I ever have to get a non-Linux device for work, I'd rather go for a Macbook than another Windows device

I'm slightly confused, only in the first quarter of the video, so why exactly did not just buy a NVIDIA GPU to use DaVinci, IIRC you said it doesn't like amd cards, I'm sure it would be the same price if not cheaper as to buying a whole new computer? Also I'm sure there is a version of one of those video editors that is stable, maybe the version in the Debian repos

Davinci resolve is a pain in the ass to get setup on linux, but it IS possible. I have had gotten it running on an rx480 (amd) and now on my rtx3080 and it works flawlessly. I run my own online video post production (color grading) studio and it is stable enough for me to use it for my business. I'd also like to mention, back when I was working with agencies, I had collaborated with many studios that migrated from using apple computers (which is like 90% of the industry) to running linux machines, mostly because you can no longer run dedicated GPUs on "pro" apple hardware.

Matt, great video, rant felt and commiserated with fully. It's a depressing time if you happen to be one of the Windows faithful. I'm not NOW, but I was for near 30 years, and it's definitely Win11 that's ruined the whole Windows experience. I've been a Windows user since, ummm, 1992 or 1993, on 3.1, and I actually enjoyed what I could do with it through Win95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 8 (yes, even those two), 10, and after buying an Acer Nitro a couple years ago, 11. Out of all of the systems I have (at present seven), the Nitro is the last Win machine ONLY because I haven't gotten off my lazy rear to move to Linux gaming. That's all I do with that machine, and I know Linux gaming is "there" for me, but my internet isn't super great, and I want to brace up for possibly having to re-download all of my Steam games if I screw something up. Linux full-time came for me in 2019, so I was still Win10 at that time, and generally happy. Enpoopification was going on then too, but NOWHERE near the pinnacles of garbageness that Win11 has accomplished. You are completely right...in spite of all of the garbage with the ads and the regression of UI features that 11 has brought, Microsoft's not-so-secret weapon has always been that everybody codes for Windows (usually first) so EVERYTHING works with a minimum of faffing about. It's very depressing, and I can only hope that Linux's surge in popularity now will bring with it enthusiasm by devs to move it up the priority list. Microsoft knows that many of their users will never change, no matter how bad they make the OS become. They just won't because they lack the thinking out of the box nature, the ability to use an OS without deifying it, or the humility to consider that their first choice could be wrong in any way. And there will always be a sizeable percentage of people who won't change out of the inconvenience factor, like me with my Nitro (for now). I can't be without my stress relief relaxation gaming machine for long at all because work life stinks. But then there's my dad, who although he LOVES techy stuff, has reached an age where he's not confident at all in his memory or mental reflexes, and fears losing data that's important to him if he tries to switch. He wants to get away from Windows badly because he sees where they're going with Win11 (he's on 10), and he's fearful of losing support in Win10 next year, but he's a big fan of not taking big plunges. Believe me, everybody feels more like that with age. The risks can get more painful the older you get. I talked with him yesterday about installing Linux on a spare drive, and then booting from that sometimes to get the hang of things before we make it his home OS. He's comfortable with that, but I wonder about the millions of elders out there who don't have a techy relative to assist in the transition in a "soft" way. They'll be on Windows all the way to the bloody end. Yeh, people who have grown old with Windows have been sort of locked in by nature itself to an extent (the fears that come with aging), if they're of the non-techy general populace. We all need to look for opportunities to help people out of that situation, because it can only be good for them.

The Steam Deck launched Linux into orbit. Linux could make a lot of money, I'd wager, if developers made all the same Windows programs ported to Linux, an "either or" installer. The market is here. In the meantime, the sandbox Windows launchers are getting better and better.
@MrBilliam295 ай бұрын
In the short time I've been watching your videos, a fair quantity of the complaints I've heard you mention about Windows could probably be solved be a clean install of Pro Edition. Whether it's worth your money for Pro, and worth your time for the manual reinstall and set up to your liking is another matter entirely. But things like ads and forced reboots after updates can go away by taking this route (using a local account). Should you have to do this just to arrive at a palatable user experience on Windows? No, of course not. It's absurd. I just wanted to bring it up to suggest at least some potential dampening between your head and the wall. 🙂 P.S. I'm using 5.5 GB on Win 11 Pro with Firefox open watching this video.

The best way I can describe Linux, is it's completely mine to own and mess around with, but I'm also completely alone in using it. Windows feels like I don't 100% own it, but I can confidently bet that literally anything and everything is gonna work on Windows. Websites don't glitch out as much on Windows as it does on Linux (both use Chrome), the ecosystem is so polished and efficient, and the vast majority of the games I bought and play only work on Windows. Vintage Story for example is a game that performs amazing on Windows, but the Linux version felt like I was playing on a potato, even with all settings on its lowest. Same gaming laptop, but now it doesn't want to perform like a gaming laptop on Linux, even after switching to Nvidia drivers. Garry's Mod has countless issues with Linux, even though it can technically run on Linux. I won't be able to use Hammer if I want to create Garry's Mod maps. BeamNG Drive is just unstable on Linux and it performs worse. Minecraft Bedrock Edition isn't even supported on Linux, so that's a game I paid for that I wouldn't be able to play again, and yes, I do like things about Bedrock over Java. I am kinda split 50/50 between the two operating systems. I recently got hacked because of Windows, trying to download cracked Windows-only software, so that's definitely a plus point for Linux. I should've stuck to what I knew, which was free and open source software. I'm not paying $60 a month just to use a couple programs.
