omg growing up watching ‘booktube’ like just as a person of color, the community does suffer from being so White Woman girlboss-y. like as a space for people and content it feels dated or archaic, and i feel like the conversation within and around the ‘community’ takes place in its own world that is sheltered from a lot of contemporary reality, especially intersectionality, diversity, and like any form of groundedness or nuance. if it counts for anything i feel like your channel has met so much performative resistance because your ideas and content like don’t cling to a bygone era or a passive frame of thought to fit the tropes of whatever niche online culture reached its peak in 2014. i haven’t been plugged into booktube in years, but looking back now as i’m trying to get into reading this summer, it’s so strange to witness and to be able to articulate how and why a platform/community could become so out of touch.

I think the fact that this affected you so much kind of shows that you aren't the vile person that some of these people are painting you as. Maybe I don't get to say anything because neither I nor any of my loved ones are terminally ill like the characters in the movies you critiqued, but I wouldn't interpret your issues with this genre as malicious in any way. You're a good kid, Caleb.

@microcult3 жыл бұрын
Yeah i figured Twitter would do this shit. Honestly it takes a lot of effort to make that video out to be something malicious. So many other people have criticized sick-lit genres and there definitely is a conversation to be had about the fetishization of disabled girls dying once they've found "true love". Sick-lit genres have been pigeonholed into that plot and it really should be diversified.

29:25: "what about chronic illness gives you the right to decide its bad?" good question. i have chronic illness and ik there are some days where my condition wears me down so badly that it doesnt matter if a joke is just a bad joke, it will still hurt. chronic illness isnt something you can put down and walk away from, and depending where someone is with their acceptance of their illness, a mention or a joke about it can feel hurtful even if it was never intended to be. seems some people didnt read the energy of the room right, thats my opinion on it anyway. I don't have any serious illnesses or chronic health issues, but as a real world idiot with a plethora of mental illnesses, I feel like I can say that in regards to the username and calling fictional, poorly written characters "idiots," it's just... a non-issue. I know some people tend to brush off criticism as "people are looking for things to be mad about" but it really does apply here 100%. I'm sick and tired of neurotypical people using people like me as a tool to feel like superheros. I know they'll say they're just trying to help, but they're doing the exact opposite and showing they're true intentions when they talk over neurodivergent people or go silent when confronted on their bs. They only good they're doing is giving me a laugh when they manage to somehow look even dumber than I am.

Caleb, I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I just want you to know that I’m so happy you were able to get out of that dark place and reach a happy point in your life. At this point, I have a lot of issues with this “guilty until proven innocent” mentality of Twitter and is the main thing that led me to delete the app entirely. I’m not disabled, so I can’t speak to what may not may not be offensive, but I can say that just by watching your vids over these last few years I do know you are a kind and considerate person who would never intentionally harm another. Whatever comments you may have made were taken way out of proportion. Honestly, I think people on Twitter sometimes want to cancel every good person for every mistake they may or may not have made, yet casually avoid people who really deserve to be deplatformed. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, and your mistakes do not define who you are as a person. Your vids have helped me get through dark moments and periods in my life over the last few years, and I’m sure the same can be said for many others. I’m happy to see you again!
