I knew I was going to join the military right out of high school. I had ZERO interest in going to college, and just did not have the discipline to go to class, study, etc. I remember the commercials from all the armed services at the time (late 80's), but the Marine Corps commercials were the most attractive to me, basically the Marine commercials were " if we even accept you, and if you have what it takes, and IF you graduate boot camp, you will EARN the title Marine". The rest is history. I did 4 years of active duty in the USMC. That 4 years gave me the discipline to go through life, and eventually go to college, the GI bill was a great benefit also.

Joined the Air Force in the mid-90s. There was a 6-9 month wait to enlist back then. It set my life on the right path. No regrets here.

Wow, your story started very similar to mine. I was unfocused in college and I dropped out after my 2nd semester. Bounced around as a Starbucks Barista and had no idea what I wanted to do. I decided to join the Navy as a way to get paid and travel while I figured out what my actual long-term goals were. Highly recommend it to all those folks wondering if they should join or not.

Signed up at 17 because I had zero plans for after High School. Marines talked to me first and they had the coolest uniforms (discovered too late that they don’t issue Dress Blues… whups) so I signed up! Complained as much as the next guy the whole time I was in but, even then, I knew it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Semper Fi!

Man, I had a full ride scholarship for baseball, I knew I was not ready to go to school and use my scholarship wisely, and knew someone else would benefit from the scholarship better then me. So I figured I needed to grow up more and what better way then the Marine Corps. Both my Great fathers were Marines in WWI, both my Grandfathers were Island Hopping Marine Grunts in WWII, one Grandfather went on to fight in Korea, two Uncle's served in Vietnam as Marine 0311 and the other 0331, and and a cousin was an 0351 in the Gulf War, so I followed those footsteps. The day I graduated Highschool they were still having my graduation when the recruiter picked me up and I flew to PI the next day. I spent 12 years as an 0311, was in Iraq and Afghanistan, and got out when I got frustrated with deployments making no sense, they had no plans on a clear exit strategy and was tired of loosing brothers for really no reason. I love the Marine Corps, and miss the brotherhood, and I am thankful for the skills they taught me, but the more the govt got involved and didn't let us handle business the way we are meant to, I was out.

My sophomore year in college though drop and add classes I wound up 1 credit hour short of being a full time student. 2 weeks later a received a letter from the draft board to go take a physical, the next day not wanting to get drafted I went to the Marine recruiting office. If I was to be in the military it was only the Marines for me, well , maybe the Coast Guard, but they had a 6 month waiting list. By enlisting I could take a 120 day delay to report, letting me finish the semester in college. 2 weeks after signing the papers for the Marines, I received a draft notice., my recruiter took care of that. A year later I found myself in Dong Ha.

My Grandfather was in WW2, I had some talks about that with him. He did not go into much detail, he was only in for a year, then was wounded in combat. Only in Europe for about a month. Talk to them and maybe even video tape it. Do it while they are still here.

Dude that’s hella crazy! I worked at piggly wiggly, pushed carts at super k mart, got a full scholarship, joined the Marines in 2001, and own a home/ property within 10 miles of Campbell University. Too funny!
