It's wonderful for video - I loved using it. The color and contrast from this lens are incredible. The lack of manual controls made me upgrade to the G Master, but I do miss this lens from time to time.

Have you noticed better image quality with the Batis? The OSS is nice, but I'm not sure if it's worth selling my 85mm FE to pick up the batis.
@MattJackson_YouTube4 жыл бұрын
The Batis is just a touch sharper, and the color/contrast is better out of camera and definitely better in post.
@nicholassmith77234 жыл бұрын
@@MattJackson_KZbin After watching a couple more comparisons I can't definitely see what you mean. The optical design is near identical so I'm wondering if it's just the Zeiss T* coatings that give it the extra punch. Sony just seems a touch more flat overall
@MattJackson_YouTube4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The pop from the Zeiss lenses I even prefer over the G Master lenses.
@talhashah4 жыл бұрын
Like you I watched a ton of reviews and they are all over the place. Some reviewers say Batis is sharper and more contrasty, while others say they are identical. DXO Mark says FE is a bit sharper. One reviewer said Batis had smoother focus mechanism and one said Batis was the slowest focusing 85. In short, you can't really rely on these KZbin reviews. It is like bro science at the gym; each bro has its own muscle building theory. I just picked up Batis, because I have never owned a Zeiss less and wanted to try it, but honestly it is hard to go for Batis when FE 85 is available for about half the price.

I recently bought the new Sigma Art 105mm dg dn for product photography and beauty portraits on the face, but for portraiture in general I have more faith in Batis 85 mm. Do you think it is necessary to buy it?
@MattJackson_YouTube4 жыл бұрын
If it’s the 105 F1.4, you’re in great shape for portraits. The Batis, though, is better in my opinion as far as its color rendition and contrast. If you can find one for a greet price, it’s amazing.

Hey bro, i'm getting an a9 as I mainly shoot action... im getting the 200-600 & the 135 g master... now I'm curious... is this 85mm af fast enough for action on the a9 do you feel? If so, i might get it before the 135. I'll still get the 135 but I'll pick it up at a later date & lower my initial expenditure upfront. The 135 is apparently incredibly sharp and incredibly fast af
@MattJackson_YouTube4 жыл бұрын
The Batis is fast on the A7iii, but I’ve never tried it on the A9. The 135 is certainly faster on the A7iii, but so is the 85mm G Master, which is my go-to mid telephoto lens right now.

How's the focus breathing with video?
@MattJackson_YouTube5 жыл бұрын
dodge nav in autofocus it feels natural and smooth, but it’s definitely noticeable (but not offputting) if you’re trying to keep things in the foreground. If you’re able to keep your focus area on the subject in the frame you’re in good shape.

I just bought a used lens based on your review, I replaced the sony fe 85mm. I might have an issue with it. When I 'shake' the lens, it gives a sound like something was moving inside of the lens. However, when I attach it to camera and switch it on, this sound disappears. I have not experienced this so far wit any lens. Is this normal? Thanks.
@MattJackson_YouTube4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new lens! And yes, that's normal - it's the lens stabilization elements that are shaking. Until the camera is powered on, they remain "loose" in the barrel.

@IanBillen3 жыл бұрын
Exactly what 'Nine Stories Creative said .. This lens is designed to shake / shift on the inside when you move it around (until it is powered on in the camera). Many people are in fear something is loose or broke when they get this lens. This is precisely is the way this paticular lens is engineered. If nothing was shifting / moving inside then it would not be correct and would be defective, you see. So not to worry .. it will not become too lose and it is not harmful ... and the lens is only functioning exactly as it should.

At 5:00 "that extra bit of depth of field you can get", you do NOT get more depth of field with a 85mm 1.4 over a 85mm 1.8 Lens !
@MattJackson_YouTube Жыл бұрын
what's your problem, man? Just going through all my videos and finding something to complain about. Relax, bro. Why don't you make a few of your own if you think you have it all figured out.
@cameraprepper7938 Жыл бұрын
@@MattJackson_KZbin I have many decades of experience, you do not seem to have that, I am tired of newbies that tells wrong things about photography terms. I just want to have all new that are interested in photography to get it right, so reax, I have no problems. With a 85mm 1.4 Lens you get shallower depth of field with aperture 1.4 over 1.8, not more depth of field.
@MattJackson_YouTube Жыл бұрын
You clearly have a problem. These videos you have an issue with are years old and I've made a TON of mistakes along the way. it was a moment in time and I've grown a lot since putting these out. So much so that I have a very successful production company making commercials. You don't know me, and I'm not a "newbie" putting out wrong things. Stop judging people and make your own videos telling people all the right things. I'm over you old farts coming in with your anger. Say something nice or don't say anything at all. @@cameraprepper7938
