I understand how you feel. Last year, I was an exchange student in Korea. As the weeks went by, my passion for living in another country was slowly dissapearing. I felt like I had to fight some kind of battle everyday and explain why I felt the way that I felt.

Its much easier adapting to a country such as China if you speak the language or are at least learning Chinese. If you are not, then over time, not having your close friends or you home comforts will make it a progressively difficult time for you. I say this from experience as I lived in China for just under two years, had a great time and also experienced racism being a black man.

Listen here: You are truly a sweetheart and i wont even pollute your comments with anything negative about China(check out "loser laowai's channel if you are interested in another, slightly more cynical perspective) but you are exactly the type of black person that i am so proud to hear speak with such grace and civility. Bottom line is that China has a long long way to go when it comes to how they view and treat people, especially black people.

I am one of those ppl who came it at random! I'll try to keep it succinct but let me say this... kudos!! Any objections/apprehensions that you raised were raised in context, on a macro/personal level and with a clear distinction between personal considerations and general trends. Any flak that you get for this (I cannot image but this is the internet) I think is probably not listening to what u said (plz, plz feel free to pm me!) I've also lived there and continue to have close friend and work on my language skills/cultural awareness but it strikes a chord with me and that's clearly a subjective thing! I've never been to the USA or NYC but you make me want to! It's good to have reminders that it's a huge and diverse country full of lovely people, and not all how it's portrayed by politicians (yours!) or in the mass media (ours!) I hope that makes sense and isn't too much extrapolation! Great video basically! "You go girl" ;p

Hey Tierra how u doing!! First of all I must say u re very intelligent, beautiful and a open minded black lady. I have been following ur videos and I admire ur courage to go and live out there. I am from Africa myself and i have travel the world and i have been to Northeast part of China in Jilin province in a small city call Jilin city. Honestly i was shock how nice the people were taking into consideration of what people have been telling me about Chinese people and all the racist stuff. i was glad i visited china and did made some life friends . I now live in Vancouver BC, Canada, and with all my travelling experience i face daily life very easy and could understand different cultural view and people easily and not to see their view on black people as racism.

Thank you so much for your video. I feel the same but in the opposite direction. I am living in New York alone doing my master degree. School work is tough. The city is crowded and strange. Even though Asian faces are not rare and admittedly NY is one of the most multi-cultural cities, I still have this strong feeling that this place is not home for me. I am far away from friends and families, and today I caught a fever and lied in bed for almost the entire day and felt so uncomfortable and helpless. I asked myself if this was meaningful. Did I make a wrong decision of coming to New York? And I have just watched your video, "doing difficult things make you a better person" just caught me, and I am not exaggerating but it does blow away lots of my depression. I think hardships make us a better and stronger self. Thank you.

Hello! Tierra how are you doing? I am happy that you left China there are multiple reason I want to describe but I won't because possibly many people get offended. I taught in China for 5 years reason I left USA because I lost my job in USA believe me or not with Master degree in Computer Sc. for 2 years I couldn't find job anywhere in USA. Finally I ran out of money to even to pay my rent. Teaching in China is a constant struggle with students none of them speak English including problems with University management. If you visit Gounghou there are about 200,000.00 people from many African nations and even they get married to Chinese women. However their children can't attend Chinese school. I stayed in China for 5 years because I was desperate for money. Finally I married to a Chinese women and we both return to USA with my daughter. Even thought I have many Chinese friends from different parts of China. Most difficult part for me living in China there is no Social life. I love our country better than any other country around the world. Houston is my home and honestly there is no place in the world better than where you I grew up. Thanks for sharing your the information

I'm Chinese-American and I've got family there. If you're into nature, check out Yellow Mountain! Huangshan in Chinese. It's in Anhui Province and one of the prettiest places you can go. The food's amazing in the nearby towns, there's great hiking, and there's bamboo forests with monkeys and pandas! You'll see one if you're lucky. If you're into the city life, check out Shanghai or Hong Kong. Both cities have more foreigners and they have amazing food and nightlife. And if you're into a more authentic experience, you should see some of the smaller villages and/or ethnic minorities and their festivals. That's pretty amazing too and something that I saw a lot of with my extended family in rural parts.

I tried living in 2 different city's, I went back to the first city because of my close friend's, both are friendly, but I missed my girl's ( just friend's) so much I had to go back and be with them. I know a lady who married a Bangladeshi National and went to live in Bangladesh but she divorced her husaband after 2 years and went home. She said it was not because she didn't love her husband. She said every time she step out of her house she saw poverty everywhere. She said it's not just poverty it is a sort of really bad poverty that break your heart . She said she felt guilty eating good foods and wearing good clothes when all around her was poverty and more poverty. In China perhaps you see too much poverty of love and human kindness. Some Chinese behavior can really piss you off. Love and Kindness are for sale in China from what I see. How much per kilo ? Good luck to you. Look around you will fit into a better society than China. Nice looking lady like you don't need China, China needs you. Got me?

From western culture to chinese, from the west all the way into the east, the difference of the culture is large. I want to say with a dare, we live in different worlds (which is not case in the fact of course). It is that our region is mostly makeup of genetics race Chinese, like in the United States of America you have a percentage here, percentage there, percentage elsewhere. It is a homogeneous country, and if you look different and speak different (especially if your sisheng tones learning is somewhat off) people will tend to look at your weird and maybe be rude or kind of mean to your own person over time. I had hard time fitting in Canada when I was younger because of language barrier and difference is culture (what I think is correct, what I think is morality, what I think is beautiful and what is ugly, what I think is funny, what I think taste good in the cuisine of food and the dishes, what I think is healthy body for self and other, what I think is good movie and television). This does not make us evil or with no morality, we think different, have different culture, different religion, different school learning, different family unit tradition. I do not make excuse for bad and rude people who are of utmost hateful, I saw that we are different peoples with different cultures. But I hope eventually we can overlook that or in the far future society and culture will collide to the point of infusion and produce result unlike any seen, who ever knows... might be a good world with less death and more inward thinking of self by then.

Your reasoning makes no sense: European culture is totally different from China's; yet, Chinese people don't treat Europeans the same way they treat black people. You better learn to recognize racism when it looks you directly in the face. You really believe these Chinese people are not deliberately treating black people mean based on their skin color or race. Oh, I see, It's just a different way of living and behavior. That explains everything.
