I've been away since May. Here's why I left, and what's happening next.
I speak quite quickly in this video so do not feel disappointed with yourself if you find it harder to understand than usual. I have added subtitles so use them if you need them.

Stop beating yourself up. Get on with your work and learn who matters to you. Don't give internet trolls or anyone else power over you. Focus on your supporters and everyone who loves you. you can claim this sure, but consider being a southerner of the US in a northern city. I had a cousin meet up with me in NYC from Alabama, and he had the worst time...a lot of people treated him like he was an idiot just because of his accent. I mean...if the connotation were I had to change my accent for people to take me seriously...I'd be miffed too. Nobody likes to be judged on dumb shit. My cousin owns 2 businesses! Successful guy! But people think his accent sounds "stupid" so he must be too.

Hi Lucy, My name is Inna and I'm an English teacher myself and I also run a KZbin channel in Ukraine where we post our English lessons. I've just watched your video and I want to support you. The first thing I'd like to say is that you are an inspiration for me. I love to watch your videos, they are informative, interesting, and just awesome. The best part of your videos is you, as you have gorgeous pronunciation and an exceptional sense of humor. I've studied at Kyiv National Linguistic University and our first lesson was an introduction to RP. We've spent years on training sounds, diphthongs, words, and whole sentences. And we loved it, as we wanted to sound like British. RP is a standard that is understandable to everyone, it is clear and easy to learn. I don't understand why people are so angry. Are we done with racism or ageism, or any other -ism? Like there are no other problems left and this is the only one in the world. Here in Ukraine we also have a standard Ukrainian language and we also have hundreds of accents and dialects, and I find beauty in that. I bet every language has its standard and its accents. But English is a global language, lingua franca that is used in every country and there should be a standard. Would it be possible for foreign students to learn a language when you give them ten variants of pronunciation for one word? I bet no. Those people who have criticized you are not totally fair, you were not making fun of other accents, you've just shown how the words are pronounced according to the dictionary. The second thing, don't let anyone break you. You are doing an enormous amount of work, it's free, and it helps people. I hope you will overcome this whole thing as soon as possible. Waiting for your new videos

Oh my goodness Lucy. I hate to hear this. In the US we literally make fun of each other all the time about how we sound because we have so many different accents within the US. It would be awesome if you could come to the states and travel from state to state and listen to the different way everyone speaks it’s crazy. Accents fascinated me and always have.I often wonder what would make one group of people sound different from another group of people simply based on the region they’re from. Why is there a northern accent and a southern accent in almost every country. Why is there a city accent and a country accent in like every country.? Keep doing what what you are doing!! You are fun to watch and I have been learning about your culture simply from you explaining the differences in how we speak the same language.

I'm from the States too never would make fun of an accent. I do offended cringle at Southen dialects that people use. I live in the Eastern Tn region and asked why my dialect is so different from the 'norm' spoken here. I have to explain that my how parents are not originally from the area. My dad grew up in Maryland, and my mom is from the South of Nashville her dialect is more Westen Tn. Since grandmother grew up North of Memphis. I also have wondered reasons we have such diverse dialects especially since I have been around all my life. What I have learned and studied on various regions spoken in a culture. It relates back to the level of education people has a heavy influence on their speech. Offer times if don't understand grammar usage then words get used incorrectly and then carried over to how used in speech.

Even though i am watching this video more than a year when it was made, i appreciate your humility and the great lenght you went to explain everything that happened. However we live in a world of opinions so everything one does, either if it is coming from a good place or not, is going to judged, either positively or negatively. Therefore if you did not break any laws, which i am sure you didn't, and was doing things that you thought were correct at that time, there is no need to feel guilty, embarrased or offended about that. One last thing, your English lessons are fantastic!!!

That's the problem. Only 2-5% of British use the 'right' pronunciation. This is problematic because most ESL learners are exposed to an accent that almost nobody in the UK uses. And then go to the UK and understand nothing. Also, to make a carrier you have to lose your regional accent to be perceived as professional.

People from all over the world, people of all colours watch them, and learn from them, and appreciate the huge work you are doing. And there is nothing wrong with trying to learn native-like pronunciation, because sounds are also a part of language, and there are certain limits to any original accent) You are a popular youtuber, and a teacher, and that's a responsibility, but you didn't deserve to be a scapegoat, all that thing didn't have to be cruel, because no problem can be solved by multiplying hatred and cruelty. @James Woolley I'm from China and now live in the UK. I hate to admit that "cancel culture" is actually quite a big issue in China and I'm totally disgusted by it (and I'm also disgusted by your attitude, "wooo, do you know nothing of history, wooo look at me, I know everything" ). But saying it's pure Maoist is debatable. As far as I'm concerned, China's "cancel culture" is substantially different from what people would have seen in the UK. In China, such culture is totally driven by political issues without a doubt. The government makes all the decisions and we just "listen". (To be honest, most of Chinese people aren't even bothered with any decisions made by the government, so long as it doesn't have dramatic impact on our everyday life. There is only one party in China, and people are doing well, but if it fks up, it fks up, blehhhhhhh). However, in the UK, I assume the situation is very similar to the US, the formation of "cancel culture" is due to the opinions or the use of language being perceived as offensive by others, especially the minorities (I'm Gaysian, so I belong to the group I suppose). I agree with neither of the "cultures". As long as, say, TV shows or comments are for purpose of entertainment, in most cases, I wouldn't mind "gay jokes" or "Asian jokes" (I find Piers Morgan imitating Chinese advert quite amusing actually. Because he imitates everybody not only Chinese people, there is no need to be offended). But I do think there is an invisible line that you shouldn't cross. Well, although both "cultures" are trying to force us into thinking and acting in the way that they think is correct, by definition, Maoism is an ideology developed to realise the objectives of CHINA, and now back to what you were discussing, "cancel culture" is a pure Maoist operation, if in China, I 100% agree. But wtf has it got anything to do with what's happening in your country? Obviously, you've given your "examples", but it does not establish any links between "cancel culture" in America and Confucius Institutes, a more detailed demonstration is needed for it to be called Maoist.

This is a story I once heard and stuck with me my whole life: "A man and his son were travelling on a journey, so he bought a donkey. Horses and donkeys were a means of transport back then, today’s equivalent of a car. The man was old and frail, years of battling the sun strokes and dust devils had taken its toll. This journey was a vacation, a reward for his years of labour. The father and son were excited to spend some bonding time together. The old man got on the donkey since he was older and weaker, and they began their journey, with the son walking alongside him. They were suddenly accosted by someone who said to the father, “Lazy old man! How dare you allow a little boy to walk under the blazing heat of the sun?” The old man got off and put his son on the donkey. As they continued their journey, a passerby said loudly, “What a foolish old man! Do you want to die in the heat while your son who is youthful and stronger rides on the donkey?” So the father got on the donkey as well. As they rode through a village, they saw a crowd of people who yelled at them saying “Those two heartless riders are trying to kill that poor donkey.” So they both got off, and walked alongside the donkey and continued their journey. As they approached another village, they overheard the loud whispers. “These two must either be retarded or slaves to hard life, walking alongside a perfectly strong animal, when they can ride on it!” The father looked at his son and said: “There’s no wisdom you can apply, there’s no moral conduct you can portray, there’s no path you can take, that will ever satisfy the people of the world.""

Speaking from my experience as an English teacher, I can tell you that your videos have been quite useful, and that many of us who consider themselves as educators, think of you as an excellent role model because you've provided us with extremely valuable information regarding pronunciation, culture, grammar, etc. Every day, by uploading these videos, you try to do your best to help others improve their skills while learning English. You have no idea how grateful I am for all the things I've learnt from your channel. Thank you for helping us, and regarding the matter discussed during the video, we are humans, everybody makes mistakes, nobody cannot judge you for that. The important thing is that we are humble enough to apologise, to make things right and move on. In conclusion, Lucy, keep on being such a wonderful person and don't forget the people who truly appreciate you and all the knowledge you share. Best regards from a fellow teacher. Bye.

I have only just discovered you such good content and very entertaining , just letting you know that you need not apologise to anyone, you are you , and that’s all that this wonderful world requires , nothing more nothing less .I consider myself very lucky to have had access to these social platforms with such good associated content . I’m a builder and I get my feelings and actions manipulated on a daily basis , and I have to choose to look past all the client frustrations as I find that it takes too much from my emotional reserves , now I just be me and try to have a professional empathetic relationship with all my clients . For my own sensitivity barrier if anything , being overly sensitive is a tuff job in even in a relaxed environment like Australia, let alone the expectation of the posture perfect UK! We feel for you . Keep up the good work . You give more to your fans than you’ll ever know . Lots of love and support from all your Aussie fans .

You didn't create racism or accentism, those are systemic problems the world needs to solve, not you. I am English teacher too, and I used to mock at people's regional accents just to make the class fun, I have realised my mistake. Still, I am happy I met brave thoughtful students who helped me grow from those mistakes. She literaly said that if you don't speak with her accent you don't sound professional. This is not people willing to get offended. How do you think academic people from other countries feel? I am from Colombia, and some people even say that if you write an academic paper in Spanish is not that professional. Like if one language were superior than other, imagine being told that you can not even use your native accent, a part of your identity because you do not sound "professional".
@aldozilli1293
@aldozilli1293 3 жыл бұрын
@@catalinavasquez3595 I don't think foreign people understand the UK. In the US you have BLM, but in the UK we have a whole undertone based on class not colour. People from a certain class in the South-East almost unwittingly (like what she is admitting here) look down their nose at people with regional accents in the rest of the country. Class in the UK is based more on accent than how much money you have. That said most who speak like this lady or even more posh are perceived to be upper class or upper middle. I can tell she has probably been to a private school just by hearing her speak for example. In professional environments there will be a certain amount of discrimination (like BLM) based on your accent. So often someone with a posh southerm accent may be favoured in interviews over someone with a strong regional accent.

Perhaps you will giggle at the image of me mimicking your accent after every sentence because it is lovely. Regarding the video that you are referencing here, I actually found it very interesting, and I find myself trying to identify accents from actors and others I hear- because it is a way to understand more about that person. I can see how some would feel offended, but your transparent kindness helped me assume the best of your intention. I am noone to you, but I want to say thank you for your honesty and humility and being courageous enough to talk about it aloud. I wish more people with a public presence would demonstrate the same. And as we can see she suffered so much, she tried honestly to take her part, but just got a bad reaction from society. Teaching a language and focusing on "perfection" is not wrong. We make mistakes, we misunderstand people. Accents, grammar (from one language to another can turn things around), body language, sarcasm. We can have fun messing with all of it but in the end someone might take it as a personal attack or misunderstand it, which is often not the intent. I'm sad seeing you like this :( You're really nice.

Yes it's right. The issues come when your message tend to be "if you don't have my accent it's bad", which obviously is not her message. Nothing justify the fact of making fun of someone else accent just because you have difficulties To understand it, and everyone can not have the same accent as you, native or non native speakers.

Lucy, I just stumbled upon your videos just yesterday. They are quite enjoyable. It’s really impossible to post anything publicly without having critics and idiots responding. For those who put so much effort and good heartedness into our posts, it can be overwhelming IF we read too many negative comments. Just think of the responses you can receive even among “friends” on Facebook or social media outlets, so just imagine the responses from strangers…. No class, no logic and little common sense can often be the outcome. Of course, constructive criticism is always welcomed from those with a well-intended attitude. So keep doing what you love I’m certain many individuals enjoy what you share.

Lucy it just broke my heart to hear you explain this hurtful experience. To me it underscores how social media is not human and we were so much better as a global society without it. I adore your videos even though English is my mother tongue because I love the beautiful way you dignify the language. I don’t know you personally but from what I’ve heard from you, you give me the impression that you are a person that, for the most part, give others the benefit of the doubt. The black professional who agreed to collaborate with you said it well, your approach may not have been the best but that you were coming from a good place. Good for him or her for being mature and rising above customarily seeing people in a negative light especially on social media. I also was so glad to her how your fiancé, Will, stood by you during this difficult time. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says it best, “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their hard work. For if one of them falls, the other one can help his partner up. But what will happen to the one who falls with no one to help him up? Moreover, if two lie down together they will stay warm, but how can just one keep warm? And someone may overpower one alone, but two together can take a stand against him. And a threefold cord cannot be quickly torn apart.” Thank you for having the humility for seeing some of your videos the way other people saw them and apologizing to them publicly. It makes us more sensitive to the feelings of others, doesn’t it? And that is a very good thing. Personally I don’t touch social media “with a ten foot pole” as we’re fond of saying here in California, I don’t even have a television that is hooked up to a service. I just try to help and love the people around me and it has resulted in a very rich and satisfying life. As you said in one of your videos on idioms, “What goes around comes around” or as the Bible says, “You reap what you sow.” However, I understand the reasons why some love it and use it to support themselves. Good for them. In the end, I’d just like to say that I wish you and Will all the best, keep up the good work. Just one question, if the British say schooner (skooner) or school (skool) why do they say schedule (shedual)? 😆😆😆

Lucy, L2 speakers are your audience not native speakers with an agenda. Being an academic doesn't automatically make one's beliefs unchallengeable, especially when it comes to social sciences. I hope you stay healthy. Your videos have helped millions. Don't forget that.

@@brunoseven4744 I do understand that accent discrimination is a thing in some countries, but every language has a proper way of speaking, which is how one is expected to speak in the professional sphere (e.g. work, broadcast journalism, politics). Language teachers may inform students about those issues, but it is not their job to teach every single accent to fit an agenda.

I’m not sure that you will ever read this, but Lucy you’re such a wonderful person! We all make mistakes and sometimes we offend people. When so many people watch you, there is gonna be some, who will be offended. Especially now, when people are too fussy and sensitive. Any kind of discrimination, unfortunately, is a trend now. I’m sure some of those people who shared those videos just used your name to get more attention. But it’s so great that you have power to accept your mistakes, to contact those people and to apologize. Not so many people can do that, especially when they’re a successful and public figure. I’m sure this situation was just an exam for you as a person! Und you passed it! You learned your lesson, you showed us the other side of your personality which is great and you definitely became even a better person! I’m so happy “to know” you! And please don’t be afraid. You’re controlling your speech now way too much! Everything is gonna be fine! Love and respect from little Moldova.

Dear Lucy, First I want to say here that you´re an outstanding teacher and I feel thankful to you for all your great lessons. Those who criticize you in that way are closed-minded people, they don´t deserve to be called students or linguists in a wide sense. You´ll find that sort of people everywhere, you must take it in account in your way. ¨Tiny dogs bark when the bigger ones move forward" . Keep moving forward. My best wishes.

My dearest Lucy, don't listen to anyone, you are wonderful. And don't ever apologize, you didn't do anything wrong. There are always "experts" out there who will find stuff in your videos to criticize you about. You can't suit them all... There are so many people who love your videos. They matter more than a bunch of conservative linguists. Love you 💓

Exactly.... Don't try to please everyone. Be you... Tell us how to be professional in your opinion... Not these "professional s" . Upsetting or insulting various people in today's age can't be the reason to stop stating your opinion. If I am "insulted" I can stop listening... So can they. I want to hear your ideas, not the vanilla, dorked down, one size fits all, non insulting to all version - I want to hear what you feel is perfect pronunciation. As we might say in the US....Stick to your guns!
