Hello! I adore this video, I love the unique shots! I watched this in September and then spent the next three months trying SO HARD to find it again (as I'm terrible at remembering names and googling 'that cool perspective shot' didn't help me much). Both times I've watched this though, I can't help but wonder where you got your camera? I've been looking for a 35mm, and the Pentax I'm looking at is 85 (still amazingly cheap compared to my DSLR). How and where did you find one for only 25? Again, loved the video and I hope to hear back from you!

brilliant video!! personally i find film cameras great in theory (and it's a vital skill to learn) but in reality i find the whole process too lengthy and i lose patience. i wish i didn't though; they produce beautiful photos once you've mastered it. where do you get yours developed?
@helloimellis
@helloimellis 9 жыл бұрын
+palefox It really is the best way to learn the whole photography process. Just be a bit more patient and you will get great results! Also I just go to boots to get them developed but i do want to learn how to do it myself.

Usually, it is better to use 120 film, I can rarely find any roll of film with more, than 3 usable pictures, no matter if I use 36 frame film, or 12 frame film. And with 120 film (12 frames), I have better resolution.
@emotown1
@emotown1 7 жыл бұрын
Sure MF gives better resolution - just like the more expensive Ferarri has more horsepower than a Porsche - the question is: is the difference subjectively appreciable and worth the downsides?
@petrmaly9087
@petrmaly9087 7 жыл бұрын
Keith Roberts If I compare my pentacon six SLR with canon 35mm SLR, the difference in size is not so great (canon 1D is even larger), the speed at which I can use it is the same, Yes, lenses are heavier, but can you make shallower DOF, than with CZJ 180/2.8? Even 85mm f/1.2 does not get close. And it is sharp as well. If we did this analogy, I would say, is it better to use Range Rover, instead of VW Golf? The price for both used is the same, RR costs more to run, most people can probably prefer the golf 95% of the time... However than, there is the 5% of time, when you move something heavy, drive on bad road, or have your grandfather with bad knees go in, when you appreciate the bigger, higher car, that seems abundantly large most of the time. I drove RR for 3 years, when I lived in the middle of EU city, basically 200 meters from the historical line of medieval walls. City, that was not build for automobiles. I never saw any major downside.
@emotown1
@emotown1 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I thought the relatively shallow d.o.f. was one of those 'downsides' with MF (but I liked the way you turned it into a 'upside'!), meaning you had to settle for smaller apertures to obtain a usable d.o.f., and when one considers your MF lenses don't have image stabilization, the whole handheld MF thing starts looking less attractive (i.e. 35mm starts having a potential *6 stop* speed advantage: 2 stops to preserve relative d.o.f., 1 stop due to nearly twice the focal length for the same relative angle of view [need faster shutter speed to avoid camera vibration], and 3 stops due to lack of image stabilization) I'd have thought. I mean, realistically, how do you find shooting handheld in overcast daylight with your pentacon six with say iso 100 film loaded and a standard lens? With 35mm I use 100 iso film quite happily in most daylight conditions - f/4 at 1/60s gives me reasonable d.o.f. and about a 5 stop latitude down from sunny-16 should I need it. I always thought you MF guys loaded 400 iso film for any handheld work other than in bright sun shine or a studio setup.
@petrmaly9087
@petrmaly9087 7 жыл бұрын
Keith Roberts Shallow DOF is neither good, nor bad across the board. If you want to take landscape pictures with someone in the foreground, MF will be a problem and you will probably end up using some 35mm camera with standard lens stopped down to f/11 or f16. How doI use the MF? Well, pentacon six is extremely good at avoiding shaking. I use mostly 50 asa, sometimes 400 infrared with filter, which can be somewhere at 12 ASA and lower. I take pictures in Scotland, which is no California. I have some reasonably accurate results at handgun shooting, but I was never good enough to compete. With pictures, I try, but avoiding shakes, but... well, there are people on my street, that are better at it. And it is very short street. Most of my pictures from MF cameras are taken at 1/60, some at even slower speeds. This is compressed quality, but I have the original, which looks much better: www.flickr.com/photos/motorbiker1985/20685540784/in/dateposted-public/ I also have a picture of my wife, taken in the evening in a shade with new, heavy lens, it made it to 30 by 40 cm and it is still sharp.From the whole roll of film, only one (out of 11 pictures, the pentacon six was damaged, now, it can take 13, although it is problematic to put pictures in the archive) was unsharp. By sharpness, i mean what can epson v750 recognise). And yes, any reasonable person would load modern 400 asa and develop in perceptol, the grain is still better, than 100 asa 30 years ago.
@emotown1
@emotown1 7 жыл бұрын
I find that all very fascinating - thanks for taking the time to write about your range rover. Cheers. My darkroom prints haven't migrated to the digital realm (yet), so I can't reciprocate, but I shall check out your flickr stuff... adios for now.

It depends on where do you live. I have two AE-1 canon cameras (among others, similar type to the one in the video). I also have many others I bought in used camera stores. Working film camera with lightmeter can be between 50 - 200 dollars on Ebay from trustworthy sellers, who claim the camera is working. Camera itself is not important, if you use scratched east german Praktica for 25 dollars, or pentax spotmatic in top condition for 250 dollars (both with the same lens, lets say SMC takumar 50mm f/1.4), you will not see a difference between the two pictures.
