I am ethnic Korean, was born in Kzylorda (I looked and it’s near Жезказган) and moved to Moscow when I was 8 year old. I didn’t feel discrimination in Kazakhstan, because there were equal parts of Asians ( Kazakhs and Koreans) and Russians. But I only went there for 1st grade. It definitely hit hard when I went to russian school. Literally only me and later my brother were asians. It got worse when I went to uni, because after 2010 the racism towards Asians skyrocketed, because of central asian migrant wave. I guess I’m still struggling with my ethnic identity, because my family are culturally russian (soviet) , we don’t speak korean (it’s different dying dialect) and lost cultural connection with Koreans. Ethnic Koreans from post soviet countries come from korean immigrants who moved to Russian Far East in the late 19th century. We sort of stuck in between, russian inside, but Russians think that we are foreign, korean outside, but it’s foreign to us. But it’s just from my millennial perspective. My grandma used to speak korean to her parents, but still she’s a soviet person, same as my parents. How did you learn such a good English in russia?
@victrola2007
@victrola2007 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting perspective, but please do not confuse 'Russian' with 'Soviet' which, as you of course know was a political regime that force-glued all the republics together which included the Baltics, the 'stans', Georgia, etc. It drove me nuts and confused to no end when we immigrated in 1978 and US TV anchors and population used Russia instead of Soviet Union. Interesting fact, which you may not have been as relevant to you since you sound much younger than I, was that Soviet military service was mandatory, so there were always soldiers around. To prevent any issues with not (potentially) putting down any uprisings by those of one's own culture/republic, soldiers were shipped to serve in ethnically different areas. So, for example, as a Russian child living in Latvia, we mostly saw young Asian republics' soldiers who were ethnically different. Diabolic.
@koshkamarvel7825
@koshkamarvel7825 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve had no idea that military service was that intentional. I’m still confused about words. Like what do you say about a person who lived in USSR, but not ethnically russian, what mentality do the person have? From what I understand there was a melting pot of several ethnicities in Kazakhstan (apart from Kazakhs), like Russians, Ukrainians, Koreans, Chinese, Greeks, Germans, Jews and ethnicities from Caucasus. My mother’s classmates are Greeks. The moved back to Greece, but older generations still can’t assimilate because it’s a foreign culture to them. My family always had multiethnic friends and acquaintances. Yeah there are some differences like we used to celebrate kazakh holiday Nawruz back in Kazakhstan and ate Kazakhs dishes.
@victrola2007

@@koshkamarvel7825 ok, to simplify - USSR's republics all had/have Russians living there and all languages are/were spoken, still are but when (as an example) I, as a Russian child went to school (which I did), in Latvia our classes were segregated by Latvians and Russians. Most Latvians spoke Russian. A Russian speaker (a Jewish or a pure Russian) could live life there w/o knowing two words - sa.e goes for orher former republics. People confuse ethnicity (I am excluding the Jewish population because there it was/is still an ethnic group vs Amercan treatment of it as purely religious) with a citizenship of a now defunct country. On a passport everyone had to carry one's ethnic group was listed officially. Just because I was born in Latvia it did not make me Latvian. (My case is even odder since my mother is Czech, probably the only one that actually lived there, ever). My passport, before confiscation at immigration) says 'Russian'. My father's also said 'Russian' but my grandfather's ''Jewish". Republics (during USSR) were countries forced together by a political regime where old native populations lived side by side with the Russians, sometimes intermarrying, and mostly not, for decades if not centuries. Languages were different (including alphabets), ethic (native) costumes, traditional customs - different, all spoke Russian, but one could get by speaking Russian w/o speaking Georgian (for example), etc. Some places like Belarus or Ukraina, sure, most are bilingual. Kavkaz republics were a different situation. Of course there was a mixture of foods and traditions, we had many Latvian friends, but at that time, some institutions (like engineering institute) were segregated. I was the only Russian speaking kid in the City Choir of Riga ('70's) and memorized all in Latvian, decades later the Frozen beaches of North Carolina still feel nostalgic and homey as Dzintary or Urmala, as the smell of frozen Baltic sea and iodine. I was addressing the basic fact that USSR was not the same as Russia, that cultural habits and local traditions varied depending which republic was one's home. The whole existence under USSR is entirely a different topic.

Beemo thinks you are trying to tell his story and you are doing it all wrong! By the way, your Russian is still terrific. Thanks for sharing more details. Btw, shashlik is made by first marinading the meat (lamb or beef) in onions and white vinegar (sometimes red or wine in a pinch) to break down protein first, skewered on metal skewers and grilled over hot coals, until you see some charr. Although I no longer eat meat, the memory of how delicious it was, particularly when meat was so hard to get during Soviet era, makes me drool. I remember tasting my first shishkebob in the US at a bbq and being really confused by that taste. It even tastes different than a typical Middle Eastern take out kebob place in the US. This dish as well as plov (a type of stir-fried rice w/meat) actually are the culinary 'gifts' from the Tatars, the 'stans', Armenia, Georgia, etc. Lots of great recipes on line. Thanks for sharing!

When one looks back on those days, it's so nostalgic, and it was more interesting for us and for Kyuho because you grew up in a different culture from your own, of which about 8 years of your childhood spent abroad. Bro, Kyuho pronunciation has changed so much, lowkey he sounded very Russian when he said, "I'd like to go for a walk." But right after when he repeated the same sentence he sounded very north American.

Awwww. So cute!! I’m very glad you survived the bullying , so sorry you experienced that ☹️. That must stay with you and affect you and your sister still. Still, it’s nice you were able to experience different countries, food and languages. Very happy you turned out to be kind and sweet. 😂😂 Beemo is too much!!! I had to stop crocheting and lace making because of my chihuahua! He was not happy when I sat paying so much attention to something else and would tangle up what I was making! So naughty!! 😂. YES, let’s see and hear about your impressions of India👍🏻. Thanks for sharing, have a healthy and happy week! Oh! Big thumbs up to your mom for helping you learn to speak Korean.

Thank you so much for your kind comment! My sister and I didn’t really understand racism back then since we were too young, but thankfully we are all good now :) Beemo really wanted our attention while we were filming. We had to edit a lot lol I will try to find some more footage about India. Again thanks for watching and have a great week 😄

Okay, I have to admit I was both cringing and laughing at Kyuho's younger photos and videos. I'm guessing in a more ethnically diverse country, they are more accepting of people from other countries such as America, Australia, Canada, etc (of course racism will occur in any country, though I'm sure there are equal or greater parts people who will be accepting and kind to you). When I was attending National Taiwan University, we had this one non-Taiwanese international student from South Africa who made it in through scholarships and international exams. While on the surface, we were welcoming to him, for some reason he was not invited to many major events, and even if we felt bad and tried to invite him, we only did it half-ass'ed and didn't really care. I wasn't part of the "main" group in my school department either so I can relate to him being left out, having been an Americanized Taiwanese to only moved here because my dad lost his job. In fact, when I moved to Taiwan from the USA (born in NYC), I felt more discriminated than I ever was in the United States. I was left out of a lot of events in high school, Taiwan and even now I don't really have that many fond social memories from my high school in Taiwan except for those two friends that I thankfully made to study for college. University was a bit better, but because there are just so many people, it's hard to make lasting friendships. When I returned back to New York, I felt I fit in perfectly again, and it felt like returning home. When I started school in PS 31, New York, it was easier to fit in. Of course, there were still bullying and kids being dicks, but most of it wasn't racism, just the regular social hierarchy BS that made popular kids bully less popular kids to keep their popular standing. I don't have any identity crisis thankfully. I am fully Asian American, and I am proud of it. I embrace and take pride in my Taiwanese heritage and culture, but the free USA will always be my loving permanent home. Anyway, enough of that, I'm so happy to see Kyuho share his childhood! Next time, Sarah please! XD How did Sarah feel when she moved to Korea? Did she feel like she was left out? Did she get worshipped because she was a foreigner (some places in Asia worship foreigners, especially if you're white, lol)
