My grandfather passed away before I was born and just recently my sister found his Nikon F2 without a lens attached. My sister gave it to me expecting that I would sell it (she knows I could use the money) but I decided against it. I had it restored and the guy that fixed the camera only had one type of lens that could be mounted on the body and it was a 28mm f2.8. I took it because he was selling it to me for way less than if i'd bought one online, and I trust this man. He's a legend in the community where I'm from. Some of my friends then told me that I should've waited until I found a cheap 35mm lens online so that kind of made me regret getting the 28mm. Since this is literally my first experience with photography outside using a smart phone, that did affect my excitement with the hobby quite negatively. Of course I did a ton of research before getting into this, but your video gave me the encouragement I didn't know I needed and it seems you've just made me excited again. I really appreciate this.

Wow! That Nikon has had quite the journey. Now your grandfather’s artistic legacy, and the camera’s, get to continue through you as you build your own! Being restored by a legend in the community is just icing on the cake. People’s preferences inevitably come into their recommendations, but I’m glad you’re going to step up to the plate and go for it. Happy shooting! 🤜🤛

your channel is probably one of my favorites for street, you definitely should be bigger! i have been shooting for 16years+ and i know the things you are teaching people but you give such a great presentation and your work is quite wonderful so it brings me back time and time again! there are so many channels out there that talk a good game but don't actually produce any work of substance! keep killing it.

So good! I’ve been a 35 person for ages, but I’ve definitely been warming up to 28 in the last year since getting the xf18. I find myself surprised by how much I’m using it, getting along with it. Makes a great companion with a 50 (33) too. Love your work as always, I really appreciated how you broke down some of your compositions, that’s such gold.

Fantastic Dorian - I love this focal length as much as you. My eyes sees the whole scene of my urban landscape. The 28mm is perfect for capturing that and getting in close for intimate details. I normally work with two X-T1 paired with the 18mm F2 and the other the 35mm 1.5. That’s a formidable set up for shooting in London. Great video, love your channel. Cheers Mike

I love these videos. The sharing of information is always something I’m looking for. I find that you share and offer suggestions of things one can try without selling me anything. Keep ‘em coming. The “finding my style” is something I struggle with. I’m not struggling with what or how I want to shoot… I think it’s more of figuring out how to put it into words.

More food for thought, thanks. Shooting the streets back around the middle of last century (late 1960's, early 1970's) in London, my go to lens was the 28mm, and though I use a short zoom these days it's interesting how often it stops around 28mm. Thanks for posting.

I use the X70 for travel and it's a little wide at 18mm (28mm equiv). But I found cropping it generally 1:1 for street/people and then going back to 16:9 for architectural/landscape works very well. With the 1:1 and people I do have to get in close but zone focusing 1.5-2m and f8 does the trick. I can generally snap away and get a usable picture and waist level with a tilt screen changes the aspect enough to make a very interesting pic.
@thecaveofthedead Жыл бұрын
28 is definitely in my top 3. I don't really like 35 or 50 and I'd rather get around with a wide but not super wide like a 28 and a short tele like a 75-135. I'm not really much of a candid street photographer but I love portraiture with a 28 and I love that you mentioned the qualities of this approach. Personality in place. A 28 is perfect. A tip for fellow APSC users who might want to try this. I love my ultra cheap ttartisan 17mm f1.4 as a 28(ish). It's pretty small. It's got that fast f1.4 for when you need it (which I do) although it's not the sharpest or most contrasty at that aperture - though that doesn't bother me. But for a lot of street, you're at f5.6 in APSC where it's sharp and contrasty, and you're zone focusing so the lack of autofocus is irrelevant on a wide lens.

I've been challenging myself to shoot solely on my Fuji 16mm 1.4 for one year. On the crop sensor that gives me a 24mm FOV. My question is: how different is that from 28mm really? I've been very much enjoying the challenge of working with such a wide angle lens. Love your videos!
