Are there specific film simulations that you like best for white, black or Asian skin types? I ask in all seriousness because I don’t think a one size fits all approach to color works with all skin types. Thank you.

This lens reminds me of my 56mm Nikon lens that I use on my Nikon d850. Expensive, big and not the sharpest but wow the pictures can look fantastic.

The KamLan 28mm f/1.4 provides similar ergonomics, build, and optical quality for less than $100 U.S. And in most respects, the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 AF beats them all, though at a steep cost in size, weight, and purchase price.

I know the 50 is a bit boring but it’s nostalgic for me. When I was 13, I was lucky to be gifted a Nikon FE film camera with the 50mm and I learned to see through that lens. Later, I got a 28mm and with those two lenses, I could capture just about anything. Ironically now I shoot headshots so I use the 85 most of all. Lol.

I just got a Nikon Zf with a tiny 40mm f2 and it’s quickly become my favorite focal length! Gonna get a 28 next, as I don’t have a wide angle and just saw your video on the 28. Great. Also, Gary Winogrand may be my favorite street photographer and he almost exclusively used the 28mm.

I love my X100V specifically because of the 35mm focal length (23 on crop). I just got a Nikon Zf and the 40mm f2 and the 40 is brilliant! Little closer to subject that 35 but not as pushed in as a 50. Great video!

What does “equal to what our eyes sees” actually mean? Our eyes have really wide angles, close to 180 degrees. That’s very far from what a 35mm or 50mm gives you. I’m just confused why this comparison keeps coming up among photographers. Anyway, nice video and nicely argued reasons for 35mm.

@@doriyancoleman I know, I was paraphrasing. You said “35mm feels familiar to look through since it’s so close to what our eyes naturally see”. And that’s what confuses me. In what way is 35mm close to what our eyes see? I’m not trying to argue with you, I’m just trying to understand why photographers say things like that. It’s always confused me. My experience of my own sight is not something I’ve been able to see with any lens even the widest ones.

I picked up a Voightlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton Classic for Sony a year ago. I swore off 35mm lenses years ago but the deal was too good. It was hidden in a lot Canon EF lenses. In the end it cost me about $150 after selling the rest. And its amazing. I am a 28mm and 50ish shooter but love the 35 even though its MF. Great video Doriyan.

I absolutely love this lens! Its size, weight, aperture ring, ability to shoot from the hip, the way it tells a story at 35mm full frame, its weather resistance, and its character at f/2.0 are all fantastic. The only thing I dislike is my addiction to its field of view. I always end up putting this lens back on after using the 18mm or 56mm-it just feels like home to me.

50 plus years of shooting, Nikons and Leicas, and this was my first Fujifilm lens, bought with an X-T2 years ago. I agree, this is a very fine lens. Its small, sharp and priced nicely. I actually bought a second one in chrome for my silver X-T3 which was stupidly redundant, but it looks cool. I always had a 35mm on my film cameras and this little 23mm on my Fujis leaves me lacking nothing from the film era in terms of image quality.

I *just* sold this lens to a friend getting into Fujifilm. It's a great lens that I recommend to pretty much everyone (previously his only lens was the XF 16-80 f4). It's so versatile… but personally I've come to prefer either be wider with the XF 18mm f2 or more narrow with the XF 35mm f2. If I could only have one lens it's what I'd want though. Still, it's really good and if I could justify having loads of lenses this one would certainly be among them. Incredibly versatile. Thanks for the video! Always good to see your stuff! :)

I wanted to add a second system to my Olympus/OMSystems cameras. I got no further than the X100V and went Nikon ZF last year with a voigtlander 40mm 1.2 and a 26mm 2.8. I’m keeping the X100V until it dies but it’s that lens in your review that kept me away. I just wasn’t impressed with its closeup abilities. I had hoped they would update it when they announced the 40 megapixel sensor. And now with all the Fuji issues with the app and auto focus I feel like I dodged a bullet. Come on guys I mean Olympus/OMS I have been using WiFi to download video and raw since 2016. Get with the teens guys!
