Why I Love Eskrima
It’s been a 30 plus year love affair with Eskrima. I have trained many systems from the Philippines for most of my adult life. I teach three systems. Mati Arnis, Balintawak, and De Campo 123 Original. I continue to train other Filipino fighting systems, these arts have, and continue to enrich my life. These are my reasons for loving these rich cultural systems. I really hope you enjoy this video.

As an aside...I signed up to the Decampo 123 online course a few weeks back (first module only-to see how I go at 65 yo) in part because of you and your channel. I'm loving it.

@@JoelHuncar Where I live (Australia)-there are three Decampo 123 instructors in my city...though looking at their website-they now seem to be focused on another system. I'm thinking I'll spend a year learning from online before considering contacting them. anyway thanks for your channel I really like it/rate it.

The most powerful army in the 1600's, the Spanish Armada, could not conquer the Philippines, getting their buts kicked. The Spanish returned with an increased force and a better plan. On the second try, The Spanish succeeded in conquering the Philippines under Jesuit direction for the Catholic Church. The Filipino fighting system was highly prized by the Spanish, hiring the fighters to be soldiers in their army.

@@iExistOne thanks for this comment. As far as I understand Eskrima and the disciplines that were the base of these arts were very well respected, and still are. There were likely Eskrimadors in the Spanish navy. Some serving as corsairs as well. Eskrima had had a colourful history.

@@JoelHuncar Someone should do a documentary on this, ship to ship fighting in the Spanish Navy, by FMA practitioners of the day.

@@iExistOne I agree. Or do an action movie based on one of the twentieth century Grand Masters such an Antonio Ilustrisimo. His biopic would be amazing!

@@JoelHuncar Interesting. Another option, a movie which follows the building of the 12 Masters to standardize FMA. All of them won their merits in real combat on the streets of Cebu. Highlighting the time and fights they were famous for and their meetings to build a standard. Not everyone agreed about a teaching system.

Yes… also the labour movement struggles that caused so much violence in the Doce Pares/Balintawak camps. That would make a great movie.
