I made a FC2 deep-dive blog post on my Wordpress: atestinal.wordpress.com/2022/03/09/an-actual-deep-dive-into-far-cry-2/ It's pretty long, and would have actually been much longer had I not chosen to mostly focus on the things that interested me enough personally to talk about at length. This was originally intended to be a YT video on my channel, but my editing/gaming PC died in January of this year (2022) and can't afford to have it fixed, so I can't make videos.

As I can't get enough of FC2, I went to read your text. I'd rather not debate it with you (English is not my native language, so it's always tiring for me to write) but I must say I loved reading every paragraph. Take care of yourself and good hunting in the UAC :D

The lack of HUD in FC2 made it immersive. I love the way that fast travel was limited and that the focus was on functioning in a challenging game world, not a power fantasy.

I love it how fast travel wasn't even the most effective thing to do all the time. Sure you can get closer to your objective but time passes faster and the malaria attacks happen more frequent, also one thing I definitely hated to do is mission at night... Felt way harder and zero visability in most places. In Far Cry 2 as the player you didn't felt like some sort of god, just another guy caught in between trying to survive.

you can turn off the hud in later games if you want and you are not forced to fast travel in in later games, stop pretending this game is some kind of masterpiece play this game on infamous difficulty in which enemies have x-ray vision and then talk

@@crescentmoon256 You are missing the point. Even if you turn off the hud and never fast travel, the newer games will never feel like fc2. fc2 just has a different vibe; you are on the same level as the enemies. In newer games, you always feel stronger.

Far Cry 2 is so immersive because it's a world that looks and feels "real" - no zombies or supernatural creatures, just a brilliantly crafted and believable African dystopia populated with armed gangs that can take you out in a heartbeat. No HUD display, no seeing through walls or buildings or other unrealistic abilities makes the combat intense, realistic and compelling. The missions often require significant planning and the combat itself never gets old. As far as the story goes, you start the game as a hired assassin - a mercenary - no better than the guys you are up against. So if you have to kill a few hundred of those guys to survive in this world, well...a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

The style of Far Cry 2 made you feel like a cog in a machine that doesn't revolve around you, subsequent games turned that around and put the emphasis on making the player feel like a king in their own little destructive world of pseudo-set pieces.

Metal Gear Solid 3 did that before FC2. But with 3, it was not so empty.
@Atestinal
@Atestinal 6 жыл бұрын
I think I agree with that assessment. You were almost always doing someone else's bidding. Also, no matter what you did, how many people you killed, or how much stronger you got, there was always more fighting and more enemies. Even the game's ending text sort of illustrated that. It definitely felt more bleak.

Agree, FC2 is one of a kind. One of the most immersive games ever. Every fight makes you sweat and feels so rewarding. The graphics and physics are the best of all FCs.

Another thing I love about this game is how subtle the story is. Later far cry games make it very clear who the good guys are and who the bad guys are; either through telling you or through the art style. Example Far cry 3's pirates all wear red, and the good guys wear blue; it's all very obvious and in your face. In far cry 2, all enemies just look like normal guys. In fact, it's impossible to tell who's with apr or ufll. The game also never explicitly tells you which faction is good or bad; that's for you to discover. No faction leader is called good or bad. Even the player's own morality is ambiguous; is he a good guy or bad guy? He may have been good in the beginning, but he eventually gets "the disease" that the jackal talked about when they meet in the desert. He is no better than anyone else in the game; he's just as evil as everyone he meets, even the jackal. That's what I love.

Couldnt have said it any better, absolutely amazing game. One of my all time favourites, I've completed it so many times I stopped counting. The atmosphere really is something else and you never truly feel safe no matter how far you have progressed or how experienced you are. I do love FC3 and also FC5 a lot, but the second entry in the series is just phenomenal.

Agreed. For me it was kinda scary even just standing for 20 seconds without moving, knowing that malaria might randomally pop up or a patrol coming by. I always felt hunted by someone even if no one was there, like I was being watched from afar. At times the game felt very settled but even in the villages where you're not allowed to shoot felt scary at times, everyone eyeballing you for being an outsider, having their guns ready and get angry at you if you accidentally bump into them or something. It really felt like I was set in Africa, not even trying to do my mission but just trying to survive the mayhem, a land with no laws where blood diamonds are the only currency around. It felt fantasctic and im hoping for a remaster. Also the gun breaking mechanism did not felt like an overkill for me, even when you buy a gun it is not brand new its a used gun from previous wars... Funny enough Escape From Tarkov kinda reminds me of FC2 only its harder cause you are facing actual players and zero HUD. This game definitely on my top 5 list.

I'm in the group that didn't mind the jamming animations or malaria. In my experience the malaria outbreaks were not that common and didn't really happen during crucial moments, at least not for me. And I felt that the jamming just enhanced the combat. It also meant you couldn't stick to the same gun throughout the game, unless you were ready to make trips back to safe house to pick up replacements. Also the jamming animations were just a lot of fun to watch, although not all of them were realistic down to technical detail, but I can still appreciate them. I remember once when I popped a dude with a handgun and the guy fell to the ground. I then realized that he was downed but not dead yet. So I proceed to walk over to pop him once more to finish him off. Just when I'm about to shoot the guy in the head my handgun goes Schindler's List on me and jams. Then what followed was a crazy unjamming race (before the downed enemy can pull out his handgun) so I can finally finish the guy off. Good times.

My philosophy with FC2 is usually: 1 silenced, 1 full auto, and 1 explosive. It's the most varied and wide ranging loadout. Obviously it's a bit restrictive, but I've noticed it is the most universal answer to any situation in the game. I really should switch it up for the next play through.

As someone who’s played since circa ‘09, this vid really hit home with me. The frequency of combat, the weapon balance and variety, the strategy and improvisation. Even enjoying the malaria. Couldn’t agree with your points more as this game keeps following me throughout life. Here are some more things I think are worth noting: -the possibility for unexpected chaos and emergent situations. Thanks to fire propagation, physics, the complex AI and more, it results in a game that keeps on giving, even over a decade later. Every playthrough has its own wholly unique situations and amusing outcomes. -a dramatic and morally unsavory story. While it’s delivery was a bit underwhelming at times (sped up dialogue wew), I still enjoy the general plot and characters, especially The Jackal and how he relates to the world. Early in the game when he spouts Nietzsche, saying “life itself is will to power”, you think he’s a mad man. But upon replays you realize he’s not describing his own ideology, but that of the war lords and soldiers, of the failed state which he’s trying to destroy. -subtly changing AI! This partially relates to the previous points, but as your reputation increases so does enemy behavior. Early on they treat you with over confidence, but by the time they know who you are they’re more likely to make coordinated pushes/retreats or even fall into nervous breakdowns which give their position away. -mods! No, they aren’t that expansive like you could expect from other games, but what’s there can add even more longevity to an already dynamic game that’s lasted this long by its own merits. My fav by far is Tom’s Vanilla+, as it’s mostly just a ton of bug fixes and balance tweaks - by no means an overhaul.

I have to say I'm one of those who loves restrictive loadouts, I find it soo cool because it makes you vulnerable and you don't always have the guns for all situations so you need to think, plan ahead. My only complain about the game so far is the speed at wich enemies respawn in outpost and such.

This game is amazing. I think I've finished it about 8 times already. My two favourite moments from playing FC2: 1.) Finishing off enemies with the gun mounted on the back of a jeep, then as I was getting back into the driver's seat, hearing a whisper quiet whistle and seeing a spider crack appear on the windshield. It took me a split moment to realise I'd been shot at, so I quickly got on the mounted gun again and pointed its barrel down the road ahead and waited for the enemy's vehicle to appear. 2.) After finishing a mission, I climbed up a tower and used a sniper rifle to admire the view, and saw two NPCs in the far-off distance. One was injured, shot by me, and the other was carrying him away. I clearly hadn't finished them off and they had gotten away.

Far cry 2 makes you constantly makes you stay on the move. With degrading weapons, enemy encounters at checkpoints on top of being ambushed in seemingly safe areas, the game hardly lets you comfortable. When and if you do find yourself comfortable through the worlds turmoil your illness will render yourself incapacitated at any given moment. you find a second during a firefight to take your last malaria pill, only to be reminded that winning this gunfight means nothing if you don’t find more medication in time. This game persists a constant urgency of your demise and allows you to be in control of trying to slow that process down. You are provided all these different resources in the game but nothing is solely reliable. It makes you tap into your own survival skills in order to survive.

So in hindsight, I believe I slightly misrepresented the strengths and weaknesses of the grenade launcher and the RPG. The RPG shoots a slower projectile that has limited range but fires straight, making it easier to aim/predict its movement. It cannot be shot from the hip. The grenade launcher fires a faster projectile that potentially has much longer range but fires in an arc, making it harder to be accurate. It CAN be shot from the hip. If any of that sounds off, feel free to correct me.
@Atestinal

Alright I was wrong, so apparently you CAN shoot the RPG from the hip. I just tried it yesterday and was completely surprised.....I could've sworn you couldn't, but I guess I'm going senile.

The M79 was my go-to launcher because for a seemingly simple secondary it was the quickest weapon to use in a pinch. Tailed by an assault truck or boat? Nade' it. Pursued by a group of enemies? Nade' it and flee into the jungle. Enemy behind cover? Nade' over it. Equipment objective? ...You guessed it, a single shot can solve many problems. The biggest factor that makes grenade launchers objectively more appealing than rocket launchers is the speed of the projectile. Rockets are way too slow. It is much easier to get shots on moving targets and in most cases, destroy targets quicker than they have time to move away or shoot back. Another factor to consider is that launchers are prone to failure. A rusted RPG will fire rockets in unreliable trajectories, and even drop a live rocket right at your feet. The Gustav can also ignite brush with its back-blast. These hazards aren't encountered with grenade launchers, making them inherently safer. One thing to note about rockets is that they can skip across surfaces and the fuel burns out making them fall out of the sky to be effective like mortars or arcing grenades. One of the reasons why the Milkor MGL is such a high-level weapon, and why it takes up the Primary slot is because it excels as one of the most lethal launchers in both firepower and range. Compared to the M79 the MGL has higher velocity which in turn makes it the fastest and straightest-firing launcher. It can be used to devastating effect to clear entire checkpoints from a safe distance, even more effective than the mortar if line-of-sight is preferable. I am looking forward to your stealth guide, considering I played stealthily almost exclusively; determining my success to, from, and during an objective based on how clean and unnoticed it was. Infiltration, evasion, and egress were viable tactics thanks to how open missions were and how tenacious enemies were to deal with. This game was a joy to play for the first time half a year ago, twice in a row. I don't know why I didn't find your videos sooner!

6:40 You touch on something I've always felt about this game as well. I understand parts of this game can be annoying, and are in other games, but put together I thought they elevated the experience. I think the key thing is that Far Cry 2 was deliberately slow from the off. Gun degradation, long travelling times, illness, they weren't things that slowed the pace of a game that was otherwise a romp. Other games position you as God and try to constantly engage you, so when these things are added it messes with that vibe. Far Cry 2 is slow, and a lot is done to make you feel, not quite helpless, but not really in control either, and these things actually enhance that.

I think it's definitely the game's strength and weakness. It's very subversive in a difficult way, which makes it hard to accept for new players expecting a typical shooter. But twice I've seen gamers that initially hated the game come back to it later with new expectations, accept the game for what it is, and have blast playing it.

Appreciate this vid. Doing my first play through now. PC maxed out. Its quite immersive with basically no hud, no radar. Makes it intense. You have to scan along the landscape with your own eyes to locate enemy movement or spot tracers. No seeing through stuff or ability to place red tags on the enemy. If you are on a mounted gun once the enemy gives away their position. You just send a barrage of machine gun fire their way, much like done in real world situations. You burst fire it out to avoid overheating and keep an eye on the trees, bushes or rock out crop they are using for cover.

Just to get to a mission, you have to clear 3 outposts that will give you nothing but a couple of ammo, you will be attacked maybe 6..8 times. I love it. The AI is way more chllenging than the other titles. In FC 5 you cna stand in front of a NPC it will even see you. But in FC 2 they saw you from a very long distance if you are coming by car. And the gold bars? Everywhere there was a possibility of a blinking detector...in the very middle of a desert in a out of the route place...man, there was exaclty 5 fast travel points in north and 5 in the south. And to get weapons..you had to travel. And the jamming? If I saw a review mentioning that the weapons jammed, I would be pissed. But not in FC 2...it just gives you more adrenaline. It's my favorite FC title alongside with Primal

People complaining about FC2's weapon jamming is pretty funny, because in FC2, your weapon jamming is most likely due to your own bad planning. Bringing a gun caked in rust and dirt after 10 gunfights is just asking for a bad time. IMO one of the reason FC2 fared so poorly compared to FC3, was the whole mindset of "I just wanna turn my brain off and have fun". Which I kinda don't personally get, at least for me, those games that are too low intensity and with repetitive filler just make me think "What am I doing with my time?". Another thing I've thought about with games like Far Cry 2, Dark Souls, Sekiro, Pathologic, LISA, Metal Gear Solid et.c. These what are I like to refer to as "high-intensity" games. And I've found a good comparison between said high-intensity games and food. Such games that properly get your noggin jogging are like a proper and nutritious meal. You have your playing session and you feel sated at a point and might not even feel like playing more for that day. Whereas with for example the typical contemporary Ubisoft sandbox and the other games lending from their design book; It's all just potato chips. You could just go on forever, because you're not getting sated. And not to mention that they use psychoanalysts to help find more addicting loops. Like I've wasted so much time on Red Dead Online thanks to its fun, but low intensity gameplay and carrot on a stick drip feed mechanics that I could've used on doing something more fulfilling or playing something more engaging.
@Atestinal
@Atestinal 4 жыл бұрын
I have a friend who plays lots of low-intensity games in his free time, so I talked with him about it, and what we came to was that because the "busy" part of his life is very mentally demanding/draining, brain-dead activities (whether it's games or TV) are all he's got energy for. Conversely, if he was just working a full-time brain-dead job, he said he'd probably prefer playing high-intensity games to balance it out

9/10 game. I loved it and played it to completion many times. The multiplayer was a bit broken and crazy hard. I think the campaign ending could have been better. It was pretty underwhelming. It would have been cool if the Jackal was in a new random location with every playthrough and you spent the game / missions acquiring clues to his location and the last mission ends in an epic and lengthy shootout. The weather mechanics / graphics in this game are dope. So is the fire. When I first used the flame thrower, i was so impressed how realistic it looked and sounded. What a badass game.

Yeah, it'd have to still be in my top 3 FPSs as well, Atestinal. Even playing it now, 12 years after release, the African environment still fills me with awe as I travel to find raw diamonds to upgrade my gear (the games only reward), and the music just adds to that. The atmospherics are perfect, the desolation of the war torn third world country is palpable, the game physics are the best of all the FC games, and the absence of any on screen HUD allows full immersion. The immersion is also helped by the lack of any monsters or magic like the other FC games making it the most human of all the FC games. You can help the locals to survive and escape, and even kill a lot a scum and become one of the most feared mercs around, but ultimately you're just one more terrible person, making a terrible situation even worse. If you love FPSs, play only on 'Infamous' level for added realism.

The only thing that keeps me from enjoying this game is most of the time i'm getting shot but i don't see any enemies, only to discover they are shooting without even aiming at me or that they can shoot me even with a wall in between.

I’m hoping SCUM will one day do what FC2 failed to do, though it will almost certainly not be quite that. Ubisoft will never remake FC2, and that’s a shame. It’s so close to being an amazing game. As many have said, it’s the best and the worst FC game.

I'm sorta of in a position where I might need to focus more on getting a new video card instead of a new triple A game ^^; Mine's is getting outdated. I do want to try FC6, but I don't have any expectations going in. I don't know too much about it since I've been avoiding a lot of the news surrounding it. But also, FC sorta feels like a series where they want to change and experiment with things, so I'll just try and take it for what it is

The first time I played it, I found it very repetitive and time-consuming, and there was the malaria thing, which got in the way a lot. I am recently revisiting/playing this game. I want to appreciate the details and play more calmly. Thanks for the videos.

you ever going to do another LP of far cry's?
@Atestinal
@Atestinal 6 жыл бұрын
If you mean another LP of any of the FC games in general, I'll be doing a Far Cry 5 LP on Infamous. As for the others, it's really hard to say. FC1 and Blood Dragon, I don't know enough about. I'd have to look into it. FC3 wasn't really my thing. I tried doing a console LP of it (it's still on my channel), but I ended up cutting it short. In fairness to the game, it was also because l was often recording it under less-than-favorable conditions. But who knows, I've been kinda considering giving it a 2nd chance on PC. I heard FC4 was very similar to 3, so I opted not to buy it. Primal caught my attention since it seemed more focused on melee and bows, which were my favorite modes of attack in FC3. But by then, I had lost interest in the series, so I didn't buy it. However, FC5 kinda brought me back, so maybe. More FC LPs would depend on how well this video and the FC5 LP does, really.

I respect your opinion. For me, i really didnt liked a bit of FC2, graphics are cool, but besides that, its boring, the history is really meh, voice act is really bad, if you compare with STALKER that came out some years before FC2, i couldnt like FC2.
