Monty Python is intelligent humor, most people think intelligent humor is the big bang theory where they use big words and make jokes that only someone who is a physicist will understand. But BBT is just being condescending. Monty Python's funniest moments come from the creativity of their circumstances, i mean two mafia guys robbing an army base, a guy trying to return a dead parrot, nobody expects the spanish inquisition. hamlet going to a sex crazed psychiatrist because he is tired of people asking him to do monologues, coal miners arguing about the difference between a metope and an abacuss, The Knights who say Ni....the circumstances are simply genius and most of them turn into something completely different through the course of the sketch. I laughed at monty python silly olympics sketch when i was 10 years old, and i laugh at the same sketch now. No other show i have shows shows as much creativity as monty python, it is simply genius.

What I took from these interviews is that the enduring influence of Python in america is that it was three things: Intelligent. Irreverent. Fun. To nerds and geeks in america before that, there wasn't a license to be that way. And suddenly, from across the pond, here are these guys, clearly intelligent, allowing their imaginations to run in whatever weird ways they wanted, not revering the status quo, and having a fun doing so. I saw my first Python show on PBS when I was 10 and fell in love instantly. I didn't get any of the intellectual gags about Proust or surrealism, but they were silly enough to even appeal to a young boy. As time went on, they taught me that the intellectual world was a deep well of silly stuff that could be exploited for ridicule and slap-stick. They also taught that it really takes an intellectual to actually make those jokes, because you had to understand the stuff to find the funny.

it's interesting to hear this. I remember the start of monty python, ( I wont call it 'python,' as is the modern way, or use the word iconic, however true that is). it was the fruition of various strands, eg. that was the week that was, at last the 1948 show, do not adjust your set, and the surreal absurdist tradition of english humour going back to spike milligan and the goons, tony hancock, and even futher to edward lear and lewis carrol. it's good its crossed over. also good is harry enfield.

My dad was English and a big Python fan which is how I started watching. Out of all the British comedies (Red Dwarf, Yes Minister) he watched, Monty Python was by far my favourite. I was obsessed with it as a kid and in some ways still think of its humour as childlike. When I was 8 or 9, I'd get my friends together and we'd reenact sketches with a slight twist. We did the Dennis Moore bit with Barbies instead of lupins.

In typical fashion, when you have to tell people and remind people that you're clever, odds are you're not. But the clever aspect of Python's comedy just oozed through without them ever mentioning it or pointing it out. They didn't need to, they just had it. The great thing was that they did dabble in genial absurdity without ever dumbing it down for us. I always respected them (still do, actually) as much as I felt respected by them. Icons. Period.

Jay Roach comparing the sharing of Python with friends as like the sharing of music - that is so spot on! Pythonisms would erupt in casual conversation and infect them. Something in the conversation would remind someone of a Python sketch, and before you know it three or four people in the group would start randomly quoting Python, causing those in the room who didn't know what Monty Python is to be utterly flabbergasted. So naturally we'd have to explain. That's how Python took over Earth.

"That couldn't exist unless the pythons did it first" - Hank Azaria. Now while I love the Pythons and am indebted to them for moulding (warping?) my childhood mind, I feel that Spike Milligan is the master and pioneer of the style Hank speaks of. Contemporary comedy owes a lot to the Goons.

The Pythons all have acknowledged the Goons influence and also Beyond the Fringe as strong inspiration but those comedies never made it to America to influence young American comedy like Monty Python did through the PBS broadcasts... Of course, Spike Milligan is cast in Life of Brian, so he was well respected by the boys...

Matt Stone and Trey Parker are just as influential, if not more so, than the Pythons were. South Park FTW Monty Python FTW

I was in high school and one night a friend called and told me turn on the PBS channel. I was hooked. I haven't looked at the world in the same way since.

Luke Wilson's Dad was largely responsible for Monty Python's first American toehold.
